Two weeks ago, I scheduled an appointment for myself and my wife for today at 1:45 and 2:00 pm. However when we arrived at 2050 Clarmar Way, the front door was locked and the elevator did not work. The parking lot has a gate which was locked and not one car parked there, implying that there was nobody there. I was referred over to him by another dermatologist across the street who thought that this doctor could help me with what look like bug bites or a rash on my arm and possibly could do light treatment. When I made my appointment I went right over from the previous doctor's office and scheduled my appointment and at that time nobody told me I would have a copay, or had paperwork they could email me in advance. I told them I have concerns about my skin on my arms and breakouts on my face and my fingernails but was referred to the other dermatologist because he took care of nail issues. The front desk assured me they did too so I thought this would be one stop shop, boy was I wrong! [[HIGHLIGHT]]I showed up 10 minutes late because I was at a previous appointment and got caught in traffic. They then told me I had a $20 copay which I knrw nothing about, and paperwork to fill out before I could be seen and my appointment would only be 15 minutes[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. This was my first appointment.. this is all so my last appointment with this office! When the doctor finally came in after I managed to get through all the stuff just as quickly as I could, he looked at my arm with these marks on it and asked me what I saw? What kind of a question is that? I told him I see red bumps and I don't know where they're from so he hands me a mirror and tells me, "look in this and tell me what you see!" I told him that was very patronizing and felt insulting to me but that I was referred to him because he was supposed to know how to treat something like this. He said he couldn't do anything unless he did a biopsy on these marks on my arms but he thought I was scratching myself in the middle of the night and I showed him I had no fingernails to scratch with. He said he could not help with fingernails unless there was fungus so his front office was wrong! Then he proceeded to ask me what I wanted to work on I said okay let's talk about the blemishes on my face because I have a big high school reunion coming up in 3 months and I want my face cleared up. He tried to tell me to use Retin-A with a q-tip to spot treat my face on whiteheads. I said I can't see if it's a whitehead I can only feel bumps and I showed him one on my collarbone and he said "oh no not that one." What the heck?? He says, "I can't help you and our time is up." I left there so upset, and so distraught, I called the doctor's office across the street that referred me to him crying and asked if there's any way that that doctor could see me and give me a recommendation or medication and help me further like he had in the past but felt that this doctor would be better to help me with the marks on my arms that I didn't know what they were. I'm not about to do a biopsy on my face as I'm getting ready for a high school reunion! This doctor has no bedside manner, is inadequate, and only conscientious about making money by charging a copay when nobody else ever does when I have Medicare and a supplementary insurance! Do not go to this guy!! He will rip you off and won't take care of your needs. In light of all of the negative reviews, I felt the need to share a review of my own. Honestly, Dr. Mychael Luu is actually a really good guy. He is a calm doctor who takes the time to understand your issues and tries to provide solutions that work best for you. There are times when he has really helped me with my own dermatology issues and I couldn't be more thankful for him. That said, the main issue with this office though is similar to what others have said. I think Dr.Luu is just a decent dermatologist but I just hate how hard it is to make an appointment. These appointments that the receptionist say we make an appointment for is not 1-2 weeks ahead but months instead. It just makes no sense for me. It doesn't matter if you arrive on time for your appointment either.. you're still going to be waiting for 30-40 minutes or even longer before you actually see the doctor instead of your "appointed" time. In terms of how he is as a dermatologist, the first time I came in was actually with a female dermatologist and she just gave me the most basic and common protocols in terms of how to control my eczema. Why are you telling me things that I already know? In the second visit, I saw Dr. Luu himself and he still said the same thing but he suggested a different sort of treatment, which was interesting to hear. I want to be able to get a different perspective with someone and luckily I was able to get that. Doctor is unprofessional and condescending. Would go in for acne medication and he would always make unnecessary comments about choice of pharmacy, insurance, etc. Doctor also has an egotistical tone and constantly would insist on going to a clinic to pick-up medication, which I told him multiple times "no" because it would cost me out-of-pocket. Are you paying for my medication? No? Then let me choose where I want to pick up my medication. Never once had a pleasant experience with him. Staff can be friendly, just quiet and don't really add anything- they're just there for the clinical experience on a resume. This rating is not for Dr Luu himself but for his front staff worker. Dr Luu prescribed me 3 months of an acne antibiotic but through the online nimble app that he has sent my prescription to, it shows no refills and I was not able to request a refill either. I called the office after the first month for dr Luu to send out another prescription and now I have called again as the second month has just passed and I need my last prescription refill. The front staff worker yelled at me over the phone saying to have the pharmacy fax over the request and I told her through the Nimble app where dr Luu sent my prescriptions and where I ordered the medication from the past two times, it was not allowing me to and that last time I had to call the office to get my prescription. They charged me $50 co-pay for a 5-7 min session where he didn't even provide any treatment. Total waste of time and money. I had made an appt a month prior. I had a small keloid on my arm and he told me it was untreatable unless it was painful or itchy which I wasn't. To my knowledge, keloids are treatable, I may be wrong, but this guy was not convincing at all. And the entire time he seemed like he was in a rush to get to his next patient instead of taking his time to actually explain it to me. Maybe my issue is too "small" for him but I truly don't think a doctor should think any issue is too small with their patient and should the very least provide a more sincere attitude. We came to see Dr. Luu last week. The issue was my wife's company changed the healthcare provider she hasn't been aware of and she gave the receptionist the old healthcare provider card. The receptionist knew clearly the change because it's updated in Dr. Luu's system. But the way the receptionist communicated to us was not professional at all. Instead of saying simply the company has changed the healthcare provider to the new one she showed unfriendly. The way she acted like we were cheating! It's unacceptable. Updating my review. While Dr. Luu is good at his work and compassionate person, I am downgrading for poor time management skills. While he is busy and appointments are far out, I understand. Having said that, patients should be seen at the appointed time. It is ok to be late a few minutes once in a while. If you do that regularly and with severe time delays, you lack respect for the time of the patient and have poor time management skills. Both are not acceptable when Silicon valley is so demanding of your time. I booked with Dr. Luu based on the yelp reviews and things must have changed at his office. I show up and walk up to the counter, and the girl behind the counter is wearing a t shirt, and obnoxious black eyeliner and instead of saying "hello!" and welcoming me to the office, she says "yeah?". Really? Did you just yeah me? I can only describe her at best as "disinterested" and at worst "outright rude". There is another woman sitting right next to her who doesn't even look up at me. After about 10 minutes I get called back, and a nurse with the same attitude as the front desk girl, and fancy red streaks in her hair, takes me back. As I explain the symptoms of what I think is a life altering skin condition she seems to be fairly bored with me/slash her job. Dr. Luu comes in and confirms the life altering skin condition, and while he is showing me how it is so much worse than I thought the nurse doesn't even make eye contact. He prints up material for me, and mentions about a billion possible treatments with at most 30% effectiveness and gave me a prescription, coupon and two samples. Dr. Luu did give me a lot of information, but it was rushed, and not very clear. Most importantly there was zero sympathy or consideration by Dr. Luu or anyone on his staff. I was just diagnosed with a skin condition that there is no cure for and I can't even get a pat on the shoulder? I wonder if I would have been treated better if I had been there for botox instead of an actual illness? I would hate to go into that office and be told that I have skin cancer. The second dermatologist I have seen in San Jose after moving here from Los Angeles where I had a fantastic dermatologist, Dr. Brian Dubow. If you are going there, check him out. Beverly Hills area. Dr. Luu was pleasant, thorough, knowledgeable. He took plenty of time with me, spotted problem area I had forgotten to tell him about, took photos so he can progress my treatment. He did a couple of biopsies both of which turned out to be basal cell carcinoma needing surgery. I had one of the surgeries today. First time patient and I saw Dr. Luu's assistant (not a nurse) she was very knowledgable and patient with my questions. she photocopied some articles from a book to better explain what she was saying. She took the time to listen to everything i had to say, she zapped a couple warts, gave me some topical cream for my patchy hairloss and also something for my hand. I have been going to this location for o my a few months so far- I will be updating the review in the weeks to come. This was my first dermatologist at the age of 28. I have some hefty acne, which has only continued to get worse as I age. Coming here was amazing. I was able to see the PA and she seemed to be in the know with my face. She prescribed me a few gels, oral antibiotics, new face wash and lotion. We are 2.5 months in and my face is almost like brand new. I've experienced no side effects to the medication and everything is working. I can't tell you how happy I am. My co-pay was pretty steep but the PA was very concerned with how much my insurance would cover the medications. So she made sure to go back and call them before she even prescribed anything official. I really loved that- she totally cared not only about my face, but about my budget. His assistant Nicole is really caring and actually takes her time to look thru everything. Instead he rattled off the names of several drugs and procedures and suggested that my husband make the decision. He flat out refused to explain the pros and cons of each of the three procedures. And when my husband pointed out that he (my husband) is not a dermatologist and therefore relies on his doctors recommendations and advice Dr Luu flat out told him that he should see a different dermatologist. When I told him he removed the wrong thing, he tried to then talk me out of removing the original mole that was supposed to be removed! We are talking about a surgical procedure, I now have TWO bloody incisions on my neck, instead of one. Dr. Luu is a scammer. It seemed normal at first, however, after 2 months of getting acne treatment, he started to charge a lot more than expected for checkups. Simple checkups. Checkups where all he does is check to see whether or not there are still pimples appearing. Not only does he waste time just checking up, but he does not take into account insurance before giving quotes. Acne medication that he had described were "cheap" were well over $100 reaching ranges of 30-40% higher than what he said. He is in it for the money and not the patient. read more

I have been to two different dermatologists before seeing Dr. Luu. I have pretty bad acne and have tried about 8 years worth of different medications and treatments to try to reduce my acne. I was so frustrated that no matter how much I communicated with my previous dermatologists, they didn't really listen to my concern about the lack of improvement (my acne only decreased by half with the 5 meds I was on and stagnated there). Dr. Luu actually took the time to listen to me and educated me on the different options I had. Because of Dr. Luu, for the first time in 13 years, I have clear skin with only one med. My confidence has risen and I can't stop appreciating that I can actually run my hand across my face without feeling tons of bumps or pain. I keep looking in the mirror because I'm shocked my skin had the potential to be this nice. He also treated my brother who suffered extremely severe acne and his skin is absolutely smooth now. DON'T GO TO THIS DOCTOR! Dr. Luu is ridiculously unprofessional and had no manners. Before coming into the office, I called them to ask for for a quote, & was told my first visit would range from $70-$100. When I came in to see Dr. Luu, I had a horrible "interaction" with him. I say interaction in quotes because there was barely any interaction; he spoke to me for only 5-7 minutes and he didn't even address me at all because he had his back to me the whole time and didn't even look at me at all, which is ironic because he's a freaking dermatologist so you would assume that he needs to assess my skin issue. But when I told him my reason for coming in, he automatically just wrote me a prescription & left. I had a list of questions I wanted to ask him but I felt rushed through and he didn't seem to care at all about my issues. After my 5-7 minute appointment with him, I went to the front desk to check out & they charged me more than the original quote they gave me. I asked them why and the receptionist said it depends on what the doctor said.
