This place is great. Definitely worth the drive from Oak Park. I wanted to try a new doctor, and I was disappointed when I found out for eyes was out of net work, a place I had gone to for years, but anyway. Dr. Kristina is cool but mainly I want to talk about Steven in the contact lens department After 32 years of glasses, I wanted to give contact lenses a try. I was extremely nervous because I was told that you have to go through training classes to learn how to use them. I was nervous, I was emotional but Steven is EXTREMELY kind and helpful. Rude employee. Came in for Oakley glasses and was told that they don't carry them even though their website shows that they advertise them.

I don't write many reviews but I'm taking the time to write one now to let other consumers know that they should go elsewhere for their eye care needs. My experience here was so negative that I contacted the My Eye Dr corporate help center. The optometrist I saw back in January was very nice but did not do a good job explaining my eyecare needs. When I sat down with the manager to place an order, she also did a poor job of explaining my needs. They both suggested progressives. What were they? Why did I need them? I thought I was getting readers? I ordered a pair of readers, a big upgrade from my previous prescription, based on the doctor's "diagnosis". Then it took a month to get these readers. When I contacted the manager about when the glasses might be ready she flipped out. Was I in hurry? Did I need a rush order? Geez. I'd already been waiting two weeks for an order she told me would take a week to ten days. I have gone here for years and this treatment was a shock. Two weeks after this I received notice my readers were ready for pick up. Once in the store, I expressed surprise at the magnification only to be yelled at by the manager who told me I was being rude. Rude for questioning the prescription? I knew the glasses or prescription weren't right but clearly the manager of this location was having a bad day... at the very least. I paid for my useless glasses and left. About a month later I went to another place based on a friend's recommendation. Guess what? I didn't need such a high magnification. Nowhere near it. I now have glasses that work for my vision, I got a refund from the corporate help center and now I am urging you to take your business to one of the other optometrists in the area. I had previously given MyEyeDr and specifically this location a 5 star review two years ago, but wow things have changed. I scheduled an appt online for a Tuesday at 11am. I received both an email and text reminder of my appt with no option for me as the patient to confirm. The afternoon before the appt at 3:46pm I received a call saying I had to confirm my appt before 6pm or it would be cancelled. This was the first and only time I heard of needed to confirm. I was extremely busy preparing to leave for a graduation where I was speaking, but I did return the call approximately 90 min later where I was told by Steven that someone had confirmed before me and now my appt was canceled because they had double booked. I then called and spoke to the manager the next day and I was told I did confirm before the other patient and they could cancel on them now (30 min before their appt) and I could still come in for my 11am appt. So I'm really unsure why I was told the day before that my appt was canceled. I had already restructured my day to account for Steven telling me my appt was canceled only for the manager to tell me I could still come in at 11am?! Not to mention another person would be canceled on with even shorter notice. How's that for customer service? This is completely absurd to me that this is the new system at MyEyeDr in which you must follow to keep your appt. If you are unable to answer a phone call (2 hours before they close at that) you will lose your appt. This new system is inefficient and very frustrating for patients who may have taken off work for an appt, as I did. I really hope MyEyeDr figures out a new confirmation system or until then trains their staff how to make confirmation calls in way that is effective and clear. Be aware when scheduling online and taking off work for appts at MyEyeDr. My advice is to call this location right after you make the appt online to confirm so that if you miss the short window of time when they decide to call, your whole appt isn't canceled. read more

A word of caution: After 2 exams with 2 different doctors and 6--count 'em, 6--trips to the Andersonville location, I still had 2 pairs of glasses were of no use to me: blurry to downright distorted vision. There's human error, and then there's quality control. Hugely disappointed and disheartened, I went to a different company that not only did a much more thorough eye exam and excelled in customer service, but also pinpointed basic and specific errors with the lenses I'd received from My Eye Doctor. Regardless of whether the failure in quality control lies with their lab or partly within this office, it's completely unacceptable for the burden to fall on customers. As a huge, single service company, there's no reason why customers can't expect excellence from My Eye Doctor no matter the location. My Eye Doctor has lost my trust and my business. I'm giving this review one star because the staff were nice, and to their credit, the office manager issued me a full refund without question. read more

Booking was good. Once you're in they do unnecessary contact lens fitting for the extra $150 they could charge, you get herded as usual to the retail sales staff that don't really give a shit just so they can use up all your annual insurance benefits. They try to butter you up with "free shades" if you purchase a 1 year supply of contacts that waaaay overpriced. I looked at the shades I'm like uh huh $2.00 shades from china and wants $480 for some accuvue oasis. lol I'm like I pay $180 from the top lens site in the nation ifykyk. Store manager says oh they're fake I'm like sure. I'll pass and order the way I be done the past 20 years. She then has an attitude and speeds things up just to get you out of there since she didn't make that sale. She doesn't forget you either. Took them 6 months to communicate about my glasses (she did this on purpose) can back for my annual as a walk in and she saw me just said no walk-ins and didn't offer an appointment. lol it's a pathetic retail sales op. Dr was nice but they really give 0 f's about you unless they sucker you in to spend more on overpriced items. Yelp should make it possible to give zero stars in review because MyEyeDr at this location does not deserve a star for being racist. I understand if they don't want to serve black or immigrant customers but I hope they would have been upfront about it and not let us waste my time to drive there. The person we interacted with lied that "everyone" is going to lunch at the time that we got there but I could feel her passion to get rid of us and we decided to wait in our car on the street. For over 30 mins, only of the three people that were available with no customer went out to get a can soda and came back in less than 5 minutes. At the time, no one customer is in their store other than two people that came in at different times to pick up. Hence, it was clear that they just did not want to attend to us. I had to select a new eye doctor because my insurance changed and I found this location that was close to where I live. I also noticed it had positive reviews on Yelp. The staff was friendly, pleasant and Dr. Patel was wonderful and very informative. Oh, and they do a different eye test rather than the puff of air in the eye (you all know what that is), and so happy that has changed. I'm not sure if that has changed at all optometrist practices. When I was checking out, the staff member that was helping me said that getting a free pair of sunglasses was part of my eye exam coverage. I never heard of that before and I was ecstatic, as I refuse to pay for overpriced sunglasses because they are so fragile. That was just an extra perk. Happy I selected this practice on a whim and not upset that I had to change eye doctors :) read more

I chose MyEyeDr after Availability, affordability, and reviews. I picked my appointment on a weekday evening and let's say things went very fast. The eye exam was super expedited. I brought three years of past eye history with me and the doctor didn't look at my documents. She seemed rushed at the time. And rightfully so. Appointments are booked in 15 min increments leaving little time to spare. I was given contact and eyewear prescriptions without signatures, bought a year supply of contacts, and left thinking everything was good... I tried on the contacts suggested which were the same contact lenses prescribed a year earlier. About mid week, I was seeing double vision and the year prescription I bought came to my doorstep. In my mind, I was frustrated. Everything about that visit was TOO fast. The only saving grace was an associate (Stephen) I think... who took his time with me. I called to book another appointment... because if given new contact lenses... I have always tested the contacts out first prior to ordering. The girl on the phone said the earliest appointment was a week later. So I booked... I called MyEyeDr customer service after much thought. I have never been treated like this before. I explained that everything was too fast due to time constraints. It's not the Drs fault. Upon talking with customer service they noticed there was an appointment available EARLIER.... Like 5 days earlier. So she booked the appointment and said they would be getting me a pair of glasses on them. She said to go back and get a re-examination. I went in two days later and explained to Dr. Katelyn Bult my reasoning. After another eye exam... the vision was the SAME. So what is going on? Upon our talk... I revealed I was using a wet eye drops with the prescription given to me by another doctor the year prior. That's when everything came together. Dr. Bult suggested a different pair of lenses because the dry eye was happening the year prior. I DIDNT EVEN RECOGNIZE IT UNTIL SHE SAID IT! She looked at my 3 years of prescription history and went with another contact brand. And it's working!!!! Stephen helped me with the new glasses. Carla helped me with the new contact order which was easily exchangeable. I want thank Stephen, Carla, and Dr.Bult for the extra steps they took to remedy the problem. I still think that the eye exams are too FAST... but the more peeps seen... the more $$ flow. If you feel it's too fast..... just communicate with Dr Bult. She will gladly slow down. She really knows her craft and I will be returning for future visits Only reason for taking away a star is one employee who is rather robotic, stand off ish, and rather unkind. read more

This office smells bad. I went to get contact lenses and it took 5 visits to get it right, and every time the office smelled pretty bad. They never call to follow up, and every time I called I had to sit through the phone menu before getting to option 6, which, if you want to talk to someone, press the number 6. They are always in a big big hurry. I would have switched doctors but, I had already gone to visit them 5 times and didn't want to start over. read more

After going to the Andersonville location for years I will no longer be going there. The dr I saw was too green to actually know how to talk to me about my very simple eye care needs and I felt like I was trying to be sold and upsold to at every corner. The front staff person who took care of me before my appointment was short and unfriendly and then the very friendly person I worked with after miscommunicated about the contact rebate I would receive. $100 vs $150 is not a small amount. THEN ... the offer the ship directly to me was quite the not nice once it got lost and I didn't know because they use USPS and don't give you any delivery notifications. When I finally called to check after promise by date on my receipt they told me it was delivered. When I said well it wasn't the employee found the USPS tracking number and told me I needed to check with USPS first. When I told him I don't have 3 hours of my life to waste for them to tell me it was delivered he finally got me some trials that I had to pick up as well as my order. No one here is trying to be bad at their job just no one seemed truly good at it either. read more

I had a very pleasant experience from start to finish. Based on my experience I would have thought the rating for this branch would be 5 stars. I phoned the office for my appointment and it was explained in detail what I should expect for my appointment with regards to COVID-19 and my actual exam. Polite, courteous, and very helpful. I honestly do not have one negative remark to give. Dr. Patel was amazing and took the time to explain everything to me with regards to my condition and prescription. Great staff, short wait times, and a good selection in frames. And very knowledgable in regards to my insurance provider, making it easy to get the most bang for my buck. This MyEyeDr location has been my best experience in purchasing eyewear. Now for the second year in a row. Favorite part? Picking out frames has always been a pain and often has me defaulting to very basic frames. F***ing a***les charged us for an unnecessary test that isn't covered by insurance and then used up our benefit for glasses or contacts for a contact fitting!!!!!! Now my husband can't get contacts or glasses and they never said a thing to him about it!!!!!! I'm soooo mad at these people! I plan on going there tomorrow to see if I can just pay out of pocket for his fitting so he can get his glasses, but I'm guessing they'll give me a hard time because they are money grubbing scammers. NEVER GO TO THIS PLACE!!!!!!! They are soooo shady and put in that we bought contacts when we didn't, so now we can't get glasses at another place because it says we've already used our benefit. I mean that's insurance fraud isn't it??? In fact, I'm calling the instance company on Monday and letting them know what this company is doing! Oh update- just checked my insurance and it says that the retinal eye exam is covered (they charged us) and that we received an eye exam and contacts!! We never ordered contacts!!!! The business practices here are disappointing. After four days with progressive lenses I still couldn't see what I needed to see while I was at work, even though the doctor said that I'd be able to see all ranges, close, mid and distance. When I called to express my concern their suggestion was, "tilt your head up, or you could consider getting a separate pair of glasses for work." Three weeks later I was scheduled for a reexamination and it was determined that a single-vision lens would be more be a more suitable option and my glasses were remade with lenses that cost significantly less because they are easier to make. Upon receiving my new glasses for the second time - one month from the initial exam, I asked to be credited for the difference between the price of the lenses. After all, I was told during the initial purchase that the largest segment of the cost was the lenses, and since I no longer had them, it would seem to make sense that I pay for what I have, not for what I didn't have. I was told that I would had to pay the original cost of the more expensive lenses, even though I no longer had them, even though I couldn't use them. I asked for a receipt for the work that had been done and was told that there was no receipt. "You have the original receipt, and that's the receipt for the work," I was told. That evening I wrote to Spex headquarters explaining the situation and asking to be credited the difference between the cost of the different lenses. On the following Monday morning I received an email from a general manager at Spex stating that he'd received my letter and would call me later in the day. In fact he did, asking how he could help. Everything that he could help with had been explained in the letter which he'd already received. The general manager told me that Spex would not be able to refund the difference in cost between the two lenses, although he offered to put that credit towards another pair, if I wanted another pair of glasses. I told the general manager that I only needed one pair of glasses, not two pair. He asked if there was anything else he could do. "Yes. You could charge me a fair price for the glasses that I have in my possession and you could accomplish that by refunding the difference in price." "I'm afraid that I can't do that," the general manager said. "You can," I replied. "You're simply choosing not to." "Well then, I guess we'll agree to disagree," he said after an awkward silence. The general manager said that I should take down his cell phone number so that I could call him back after I thought over his offer - to use the cost difference towards a second pair of glasses. I told him that I wouldn't need to call him back, because I wasn't in need of a second pair of glasses. I find his response to be completely out of line with today's customer service expectations. He could have sucked up the $200 - the estimate that American Express is using to suspend payment on the purchase, and been awarded a life-long customer which would have more than made up for this blunder. There's no way I'll spend another dime with this company. Being up-sold to product that suits me is never an issue. Being up-sold to a product that doesn't work, and then being up-sold to purchase another pair for work, and then to be up-sold to an additional pair is in response to complaint is wildly inappropriate. read more

I'm new to the neighborhood, too. I was really hoping to find an optometrist that was close to me, and excellent. So, I checked Yelp, and it seemed that the Spex chain got good reviews. Maybe they have some bugs to work out of their system. It's very pricey, it seems to me, and for that I expect some coordination with the reception area (they weren't rude, they just seemed like they were kind of oblivious as to how to greet a customer, etc.. For that matter, there really should be one clear reception and check in area, not 3 separate desks that look like they are potentially where you check in. Lack of direction and greeting/assertiveness "hi, how can I help you" vs. "Hi, are you here to look at frames" from the floor staff also make for confusion. I waited for 30 minutes past my appointment time for what was supposed to be a quick check back. When I actually *did* get in to be seen, the actual appointment turned out to take 6 minutes. Considering I dropped nearly $500 for an exam and year's supply (monthly- 12 pair) of lenses, I would expect some acknowledgement or apology for such an extended wait- nope, just a "oh, it should be anytime now" from one of the reception people. Other reception person 'upsold' a kind of cool retina scan thing to me at my first appointment, but was so awkward about it I thought there must be something really fishy about it. (it was really a weird approach) I don't know, maybe they are going to get simple scheduling figured out. I was waiting on another patient to finish up, (30 minutes?) and no acknowledgement from the Dr. of this. :-/ As a new client, I think you lost me. I think I will just go to ForEyes for contacts and LabRabbit for my cool frames handmade in Austria. Seems like a better way to blow my $500 insurance allotment. read more

I'd much rather take my business to Visionary down the street, even if they're out-of-network for me, because as it turns out... what I would have ended up paying out-of-pocket for a measly contact lens fitting at Spex, where I'm supposedly covered, isn't too far off what I'll be paying Visionary for an ENTIRE comprehensive exam including lens fitting, much of which I'll later recover when I submit it to my insurance company. And the wonderful staff at Visionary has at least the basic decency not to talk about customers within earshot, as though they're not sitting right there. Dr. Patel is so wonderful! She is always patient, thorough, and kind. I have a very strong prescription and recently had surgery for a macular hole. I feel like I am in such good hands with Dr. Patel. She takes time to listen to and answer my questions, and is obviously very skilled and knowledgeable in her practice. Additionally, the staff is consistently friendly. Several years ago, they informed me that my contact lenses are covered under my insurance plan because they are deemed "medically necessary," which is something no other office had ever told me about. I, like others, felt like I wasn't fully made aware of what I was being charged for when I came in for my regular, annual eye exam. They tell you that $50 is not covered by insurance - ok, fine. But I was charged for an additional "contact lens fitting" for which I wasn't made aware of. I have had contacts for years and have about a years worth left of them. If they would have summarized what was being done prior to having the exam, I could have decided then whether or not I wanted this service. In addition, I never got a verbal or printed summary of charges at the end of my appointment from the man who checked me out which seems shady in itself. Not until I got home and thought about it did I realize something didn't seem right about the charges. The only reason I give this visit 2 stars is because the optometrist was very nice and competent. I've been going to Spex for years but I'm not sure I will return for my next annual visit - I may have to look elsewhere. read more

They're ok. I usually go to Lens Crafters or some other chain b/c I primarily wear contacts so I don't need a selection of designer frames. But this place is in my new neighborhood so I decided to check them out b/c they're close and within my vision plan network. 1. I don't like the way they pitch their upgraded eye exam. It's was described as an MRI for your eyes and detects potential issues years in advance of typical exams. It's not covered by insurance, it tacks on an additional $50, and they present it as a "hey this is awesome and you should expect this additional charge" instead of "hey if you upgrade then this is what you get with these benefits". I want to actively opt-in for electives and not have to actively opt-out. 2. My eye exam didn't start until 40 minutes after my appointment time. 3. The optometrist was nice enough and the exam was typical. 4. The place has a new business feel in the sense that things are a bit clunky. I didn't get fit with new lenses, but it didn't matter to me b/c my prescription and brand stayed the same. But it's kind of unusual for that to not happen when I still paid for a $89 contact fitting fee. At that point I was running late for my next appointment and chose not to pursue it. 5. They seemed to have a nice frame selection. Maybe eyeglasses are what they're better with? I got my eye exam and my contacts are being mailed. Goal accomplished. After losing my family Eye doctor that I was seeing for over 10 years, I needed to find one to replace him. Spex in Andersonville was close to my home so I decided to give it a try. I was immediately greeted as I arrived by friendly staff. They sat me down and got started right away. I am someone who likes to ask a lot of questions and know what is going on, and they accommodated me and all of my questions. The exam was typical, they do offer a wellness package that normally is not covered under insurance for an additional cost, however the doctor and staff were very informative and helpful in making the decision whether or not I should do it. I did not feel pressured into purchasing anything extra and they were very honest about it. They set me up with a new type of contact lens to try for a week and see how I liked it versus what I normally was wearing, and they are fantastic! ( I have very bad seasonal allergies so sometimes contacts can irritate my eyes) they even recommended and gave me a sample contact lens cleaner that would help with the irritation. After the exam I went to look at frames. The only thing I could say was the downside, was there wasn't as much of a selection I would have liked but the staff was able to quickly help. Laura, One of the staff members was very helpful and even went above and beyond to answer my questions and help me decide what the best purchase method would be with insurance to save me the most money, which being an average 20 some-year-old on a budget, was very much appreciated. Went to the Spex on Broadway earlier and didn't have a great experience b/c the staff pretty much ignored me the whole time I was there. At this location, Leslie was amazing~! Came in on a weekend to scope out glasses and Leslie was super friendly, nice, and conversational. She wasn't pushy and gave the right amount of attention. She was pretty much picked out frames for me that ended up being the ones I went with. I really appreciate her sense of style. Came back during the middle of the week and had an eye exam. Doctor was very friendly and explained things well. The process was pleasant and one of the more relaxed eye exams that I could remember. I also haven't had one in 2 years so to me the exam technology they were using seemed new and offered a better experience during the process. After the exam, I ordered the frames from Leslie (who remembered me from my last visit over the weekend) and got a copy of my prescription. I ended up ordering a pair of sunglasses and regular eye glasses. Later that day I changed my mind on the sunglasses and called in to cancel the order. Leslie was very professional and accommodating when it came to canceling the prescription sunglasses. My glass came in the following week (ordered them Wednesday and it came in on following Thursday) and Leslie did my fitting and was awesome as always. Out of all the Spex I would recommend this location b/c of the customer service. read more

Great place. I got so much help from Justin, who has a clear talent (& patience!) for helping people find their dream frames. I explained what I wanted: stylish / cat-eye frames for my large melon (which no one EVER has) & *bam* ... here are your options (& they were good ones; I ended up with four new pair!). The rest of the staff also gave opinions, & the Doctor was equally great. In my life, I've never had so much explained to me about my eyes / eye health. They have designer frames, but also had tables full of sale/clearanced frames while I was there, & I saw a few kiddos come in, too. If you're in the area, definitely check them out. I came across Spex in Andersonville by tagging along with someone after lunch at a nearby shop. When I witnessed how the shop was operating and saw their merchandise It made me feel very comfortable booking an appointment. The store is clean, professional looking in decor, and staffed with friendly people. I made an appointment to have a complete eye exam. My eyes had last been checked several years ago, and I knew this would be the time that I would be joining the eyeglass community. I was blown away with the quality of the eye exam. They explained to me every test they were doing, what it does, and the results. It was so thorough, I left that day understanding many things about my own vision as well as eye health for the future. Just to warn others: They have an extra fee in their eye exam that is not covered by any insurance company. This is for a scan of the inside, and behind your eyes which can detect problems years before they surface. It is truly amazing. If you want something basic and cheap [as some of the other reviewers were apparently looking for.] this may not be your place. I think this special process they do is well worth the charge from a major preventative standpoint. As far as glasses go, they have Tom Ford. NO ONE IN CHICAGO seems to carry an actual full collection of Tom Ford so I was thrilled. The other brands they carry are beautiful, titanium styles from smaller more unique brands. If you want cheap glasses, buy them at one of those indoor/outdoor carpeted dumps downtown. If you want an inexpensive replacement, or second pair [I need a single vision alternative to my progressives] they are TOTALLY cool with putting lenses in whatever frame you dig up, so that makes it pretty full-serivce. I have read some reviews of their other locations and wanted to share my disbelief at the number of people who hold any eyeglass store accountable for a product not working for them. If you find out you are allergic to wool do you call the Gap and scream at them until they take back the sweater you bought a year ago? Spex indeed will replace lenses if they do not work within some reasonable limitations. Better than the plan at the first place I checked out for sure. read more

First of all I want to start by saying the staff at SPEX is great and very friendly. My feedback is from a span of extremes from my experience over six weeks. PLUS SIDE -Friendly staff -Later hours -Open concept space to check out glasses -Great selection of frames -Online access to records NEGATIVE SIDE -Expensive -Dr's seem to have less experience than a traditional optometry office -Heavy reliance on technology and systems as a replacement for healthcare practices vs a compliment to them -Seems too focused on staying with vendor lines/services vs prescribing the best option for the patient the first time MY EXPERIENCE I tried SPEX because they were in the neighborhood, took my insurance and were accepting new patients. Feedback I had received seemed positive so I thought I would try them out. After scheduling an appointment I received an email to fill out my patient and insurance detail prior to my visit. This is a positive to me as my time in the waiting room was minimal since they had my records already on file for the visit. During my initial visit I was encouraged to get additional tests not covered by my insurance. Due to my eye history I opted in for these tests. The eye exam itself was rather normal, except for the constant use of the computer during my visit. I feel like I was just answering questions vs having a conversation with the Dr. I had my pupils dilated and while I waited for the dilation to process Leslie took me around to show me various frames and helped me with my final selection. I appreciated her honest feedback for the frames that were flattering and the ones that were not. I was sent home with trial daily lenses. I have typically been a monthly lens wearer. I developed some issues with the lenses and scheduled a follow up appointment. I found the Dr (different than the original one) was reluctant to listen to me, even going as far as saying it was me and not the lenses. When she finally looked at my eyes she said my contacts were "too small" for me and that was why I was having issues. The Dr prescribed a different brand of daily lenses to try out and I was sent home. I experienced issues with this brand as well and called and expressed my concern. I went back to the Dr again and she sent me home with yet another daily lens. Finally we had a good match after 3 contact tries! Overall I feel like SPEX operates more like a great retail business vs a healthcare provider. The office staff is great, friendly and knowledgeable but my experience with the exams and the time with the Drs can greatly improve. I would recommend getting your optometry care elsewhere and visiting SPEX for their great selections and service. read more

Great customer service! I had an emergency with a beautiful pair of frames that snapped in two! The style was discontinued, so I rang Leslie, the manager, at this location, to ask for help. After a little research, she rang me back, the next day, to advise that the main part of the frame was replaceable. I was so happy with the good news! I had a great experience at MyEyeDr the staff was very nice and they were very helpful answering my doubts. Dr. Patel was amazing! She explained all the procedures and was very patiently and caring during the eye exam. What I also loved is that none of them tried to sell me more or different things of what I was looking for. One of my worst experiences ever. I had an eye checkup done here and they tried to rack up the price by billing multiple checkups and services on my visit. Months after my visit, they are still sending me bill which they claimed back then were covered under my insurance. All they had to say was the person filing it to the insurance was not experienced. I would highly recommend against going here for any eye checkups or services. read more
