I have no reason to dock this eye care facility. They're taking all the necessary precautions regarding COVID-19: appointment entry only, hand sanitizer upon entry and exit, 6-ft separations, cleaning of glasses etc. They allowed my mother to use a prescription procured from another establishment-- even allowed me to email it to them. They take a good variety of insurances, including state funded, and are clear on pricing and coverage every step of the way. I will say, the doctor on site was a bit curt, but I will chalk it up to COVID stressors and ensuring timely care. All things considered, I would recommend this place. read more

I made an appointment for my mom for an eye exam. They called me one time, LITERALLY ONE TIME. No voicemail left, AGAIN NO VOICEMAIL. They RESCHEDULED her appointment to almost 2 HOURS later which delayed all her work schedule just because "WE HAVE A REALLY BUSY SCHEDULE". Turned out, they don't accept her insurance which I PUT OUT CLEARLY WHAT INSURANCE THAT SHE HAD WHEN I MADE AN APPOINTMENT FOR HER. I called the receptionist in total of 3 times, never get a call back. Please tell me a reason why this place not deserve 0 star? read more

Based on the reviews and the fact that it's just a few blocks away is why I chose this place. The office is very nicely decorated and welcoming as it feels like a grand living room. So the first red flag was when I made an appt online, showed up the day of my appt 7/9/18 to only then find out they were on a summer break. No mention of this break on the website, the calendar was obviously not blocked off. I thought well I should maybe take some responsibility given that I did not receive a confirmation. So later when they were back from break I made another appt online, I didn't receive a confirmation so I called in. The person who answered the phone left me on hold for 20 mins. A couple weeks later I simply went in person to make the appointment which was a little difficult because they don't open until 11am and I'm usually already at work. So I stopped in on my lunch break, it was one patient/customer checking in and one patient/customer waiting to be seen. I was standing at the counter for about 7 minutes and then the young receptionist asked if I'd be willing to have a seat as she had to help another patient/customer, I responded sure, now this whole time there's a man doing paper work at the counter. I sit for 20 mins and it wasn't until I received a call from my fiancé urging me to leave and it was that conversation that finally prompted the man at the counter who I'm assuming is one of the doctors at the time to schedule my appointment for the following Monday. He asked for my insurance card and there were no other questions and scheduled me. MY VISIT... I arrive right on time, the young receptionist from before took me to one of the rooms to do all the preliminary tests and questions. She was nice, personable, and professional. She placed me back in the waiting lounge and shortly there after the female doctor called me back. This is pretty much where my appointment took a nose dive. She was rushed in her questions, like asking me three questions at once and then seemed to grow a bit frustrated when I asked her to repeat the question, she was very curt. Once she began the testing of my eyes she was moving so fast with the exam my eyes did not have time to adjust from one image to the next, funny thing is had she simply slowed it down, the entire exam would have been smoother. She asked me about my previous glasses and why I hadn't worn them often, I said I also had contact lenses and that I felt like due to the astigmatism the prescription felt too strong or sharp. Well this answer frustrated because she became visibly irritated like "what do you mean, do you mean you didn't get used to them." I'm sorry I may not be using the right verbiage I just felt a strain. She then said so did you want lenses as well because I would have to measure your eyes for contacts, I replied yes. In a frustrated manner she responded "so you want frames and lenses, there's an added cost." I said yes I am aware thats how my insurance works. she said I have to send you out and the front desk will go over cost. She then numbed my eyeballs and did so while explaining it, not before. Guided me out and told me to sit in the chair where you would get fitted for glasses, "sit there." The receptionist asked me if I wanted both frames and lenses as if it was foreign concept, next thing I know the man from earlier is plops down contact lenses in front of me while walking and asked abruptly with no explanation "do you need me to train you." I responded with a perplexed no. I put the contacts in and 25 minutes later the female doctor called me back, did a few quick tests in a huff, guided me out of the office, I emphasized that I appreciated her time since it seemed as if I was infringing on it. At check out the receptionist was quite confused as to how to charge me and deal with my insurance. At this point how I felt I had been treated I just wanted my prescription and to leave. My insurance covers a select set of frames, I had to ask which ones they were, she informed me that my contact lenses they had just given me to test the fit and accuracy acted as the frames that would be covered by my insurance. I responded that I have to pay out of pocket for the lenses exam. She then asked the man and he snapped at her infant of me and another customer and went on a rant about the type of insurance I have, so now she's embarrassed, I'm angry and embarrassed. She then tells me that for 3 months of lenses it will be $180. If I could just have my prescription I'll get them elsewhere, she then informed me that the doctor enters them at the end day so I would have to come back. I quickly picked out one of the few select frames, and left. I have to go back to pick up my current prescription and wait a couple months for the frames I will use as back ups. Just because a person has crappy insurance doesn't mean they don't have money or are to be treated like crap. read more

I absolutely recommend Xceptional Eye Care to any and everyone. I have a special needs daughter and they treated us and, more importantly my daughter, with the utmost respect and professionalism. They were very patient and understanding as we had to pause and calm our daughter down at times when trying on and fitting her glasses. I was so impressed with how they made us feel welcomed that both my older daughter and I went back for exams and glasses. They are now our sole optician and eye care specialist. I won't go anywhere else. They did such a good job of explaining my insurance/benefits, the types of lenses, frames and, well just everything, that it was a great experience. Terrific experience all around. I got to the location on time. Was greeted warmly. My exam started and went by with out a hitch. The doctor seemed to really care and there were some options I was considering and she was very careful to recommend what was right for me. This place is absolutely amazing! They care SO much about you as a person and your specific needs. Patience and understanding are the norm here. You feel as if each staff member, from reception to doctor, is focused only on you! The doctor has been amazing at accommodating my visual needs, as I was diagnosed with MS in 2012 and never know whether my blurry vision is neurological or physical. The doctor goes above and beyond with full exams for me each time: but bills insurance as a routine check-up so that I have the lowest co-pay (when she could easily bill each exam as a full!) They are incredibly generous about giving me trial lenses before I place an order in case the change is due to a neuro issue. Horrible service! The guy working there barely helped me with finding glasses i could afford. They are very expensive and i have insurance but nothing in my price range anyway. The guy there did more talking to others then me. After i left to go somewhere else i find out he put in an authorization code so my insurance said I bought glasses so i had to call them to clear the code. Just an awful experience. I had some trepidation about going to a non-franchise eye care center and made up reasons for avoiding the one in the neighborhood for admittedly irrational reasons. Good feedback from family members made me take the plunge and make an appointment at Xceptional. Man am I glad I did. It was like falling through some kind of wormhole and you find yourself in this whole Mayberry experience where everything is so familiar and easy and accommodating and professional and friendly. I was like, "Where the heck am I? This is in Chicago?" All of the kudos go to the Mom and Pop of the joint. She's the doctor and he runs the front of the store; a classic family business. And they make an awesome team. Both wear their professionalism like a favorite pair of shoes; it's so natural and unforced. Add to that their thoroughness and competence, served with first-rate conversation and a smoking 80's soundtrack in the background. You end up with having the unheard of sensation of wanting to make your next eye exam for new glasses asap. Who knew?! read more

I have worn classes since I was in second grade and contacts since 9th grade. I have never had such amazing eye care. The store is beautiful and the selection is amazing. I also love that they have a wide range of designer glasses and many different price points. Samra, Quang and Dr. Hoang are all really friendly, helpful and professional. I was having trouble seeing out of one eye and they double checked my glasses, checked my eyes again and replaced the lens. I was so impressed. I highly recommend Xceptional Eye Care. I only gave the 1 star to the customer service. I was told i will get my glasses in 5 days and it's been 15 days and still didn't get them . When I called them they told me that they would give me a call when they receive them. When I asked why it is taking so long they just said they will give me a call. After calling a BUNCH of places to get my free annual eye exam covered by my Blue Cross Blue Shield HMO Illinois plan and having place after place tell me that they don't accept BCBSIL HMO, I finally found Xceptional Eye Care, who was perfectly happy to do the regular eye exam, plus a contact lens fitting, and bill it to the insurance for no cost to me. I walked in yesterday morning at 10:00 am, and it is a beautifully bright, clean and inviting space with lots and lots of frames to peruse. (Not sure of the particular brands, but there was a wide selection.) The gentleman at the desk quickly interviewed me about my medical history and entered it directly into the computer (yay for no long and confusing form on a clipboard!) and then got me settled in their waiting area, which had lots of magazines and a big TV, and a cute area with some mini tables and toys for kids. He then quickly called me in to a room for all of the typical eye exam stuff, which was done expertly - and this place doesn't do the puff of air in the eyes, yay! They also did a retinal scan for free, which was nice. Next I headed into the actual optometrist's office, and she is a very nice lady who explained everything about my eyes clearly and was thorough and attentive as I tried on my contacts. After my prescription was determined, the guy who originally helped me at the beginning then helped me pick out some frames for prescription sunglasses. He was totally happy to help me figure out the exact costs of things (which is pretty complicated with David Vision/BCBSIL HMO) so that I could fit both the sunglasses and the contacts into my remaining FSA funds for the year. There weren't really any negatives - no parking lot, I guess, though I was able to find a spot on the side street right next to the office. Overall, a great experience and I would recommend this place to everyone! read more

I've been wearing glasses for over 20years. I even reached a point in my life were I now need to wear bifocals. I have to say that my exam here was the most impressive and comprehensive exam I've ever received, even with getting a complete eye exam from the eye department at one of Chicago's top rated hospitals in the past. The eye doctor was so nice, so professional, so patient. The staff from the moment i walked in were the same. I appreciated how everyone gave thorough explanations ranging from the care to the type of frames and lens I considered purchasing. They were also familiar with insurance information and were concerned about me getting the best price. I don't think I can adequetly explain how happy and how impress I am at my experience here. They even replaced the lenses on my preexisiting sunglasses with no problem. I had also purchased new frames w/lenses from them and even though a month has gone by I still continue to get complements on them. read more
