Updated Review: I recently came back to the MIA Reef hotel and I was honestly quite satisfied this time with my stay. Over the last few months, the hotel has had some significant upgrades, including adding in a Starbucks, upgrading the old small bar, and just improving overall quality of the hotel. I will say, though that it is sad to see that recent storms have destroyed the hotel's private beach. There is not much space to spread out and relax here so we would leave our stuff at the hotel and walk over to the public beach and enjoy the beach there. We have also gone during various months and the best months to enjoy the clean water without seaweed is definitely during the late winter months to the early spring months. The sarcasm seaweed can get overwhelming and leave a funky after smell. Also, it is very important to note that the island does have a sanctuary for birds that arrive late spring, and stay through the summer and fall. So if you book during the summer months, you will be overwhelmed with these loud birds that nest on the island and HOTEL. Aside from that, the hotel is such a great place to stay for a couple days. The food is still average. There's nothing really crazy, however, we would always go downtown and get some amazing street food or dine at the restaurants down there. Again, because there was upgrades, I would definitely come back again ! Also, highly recommend that when you book a stay here you book transportation through the hotel that will get you from the airport to the ferry and then the ferry to the hotel and then the same back to the airport. I have been trying to get ahold of someone at this resort for over 2 weeks. I have called countless times only to be disconnected. I have also emailed multiple times and have received no response. I made a reservation through the hotel website. I needed to modify my reservation and add a day. It is not an option to do this online. I ended up canceling my first reservation and making a new one through the Mia Reef website because I was concerned that rooms were filling up and we would not be able to join the party we are traveling with. Due to this, I ended up having to pay more for a lower quality room. I still have not seen my original charge refunded to my credit card. I am within the cancellation policy and received a cancellation confirmation email. I am now seeing other customers complain that they have not received refunds either. I would like to speak to someone in regard to this matter and hoping a review will get a response. read more

We spent 5 nights here between 2 families with teenage kids (4 rooms total). The good: it is situated on a beautiful beach with clear water and great snorkel spots. This is one of the prime spots for visitors, and it's great to be staying right onsite. That's where the good ends. The hotel itself is dated, mildewy, and smells like sewage, especially in the bathrooms. The food in the buffet is meh. The food in the 2 restaurants (they are both at the same location, one is inside, second is the patio) is hit or miss, and it's difficult to get reservations unless you get downstairs to reserve with the concierge at 8am or earlier. The host was a pain and not hospitable at all. You're better off finding street food in town. The worst part - someone in the hotel staff opened up our locked safe, and stole cash out of a bank envelope that I reserved for tips during my stay. Cash was gone, empty envelope left behind. We spent the rest of the stay limiting room service for fear of additional things getting taken. Others in our group said they came back to the room to find their belongings shuffled through. I can't stay at a place where I cant feel secure. I will not be back here ever. Highly recommend others avoid this place, or at least 2 days max. There are plenty of nicer hotels to choose from especially for the price. read more

I don't normally yelp but this place was asking for one. this place is not reccomnded if you have standers from the begging this hell tell "hotel" was giving us issues as the person booking us gave us a different price before we came and when we got here they told us we had to pay almost 2 thousand more which was never stated anywhere. It only proceeded to get worse when we entered our hotel room after waiting over 8 hours!! in the lobby and they came to an agreement that they would honor the price and once we got in our room it only got worse it was very hot as expected and the ac as soon as we turned it on reeked! i looked inside and everywhere there was black mold. this hotel has been has had complaints for years and there is still mold in the ac and showers. on top of it the showers had noooo water. when we were waiting in the lobby there was another resident complaining that there was no water running at all. then he said when there was it was only freezing cold. and don't let the buffet fool you. food was soggy and tasted like play food. then they don't even have more then one restaurant where you have to reserve even then i asked for 4 tacos and they denied me and brought 1. then when were checking out they said they weren't gonna let us leave until we paid but said they were going to honor the price. First, let me start by saying that I rarely write reviews...but our experience at the Mia Reef was so bad that I felt compelled to sit down and write a review. We have been coming to Isla Mujeres for 14 years. This was the 3rd and very LAST time we would ever stay at the dump hotel called Mia Reef..go any place else but here!!! We have visited the island 20+ times and have stayed in everything from a $ 26-a-night room on the beach to renting an entire Villa for a week on the southern point at Punta Sur with private chef service and a pool. We are the type of travelers that can backpack around and just "wing it," or we can check in to the Four Seasons hotel and get room service. It's important to know we are NOT bouge travelers. Honestly, one of our best stays was our $26 per night room with great AC, hot water, and clean sheets, but I digress; onto the Mia Reef review. So, let me say that we booked it through the site MiaHotelsAndResorts.com. Our booking agent was Gloria Mex, who is based in Cancun. Here are the FACTS of our booking: 3 Deluxe Ocean View rooms for six nights at $414 a night per room ($7452). Below is the breakdown of what the rooms were supposed to be: 1 room was supposed to be a king bed for my husband and I 1 room was supposed to be two full/queen beds for our sons (grown adult men) 1 room was for our daughter (any bed option was acceptable) So here's what happened on our arrival. We checked in, and the desk agent handed us the keys to 5014, 5015, and 5016, which I found out later are NOT ocean views; they are bay/lagoon views. I asked if they were king beds or what the bed situation was. He replied, "They all have one queen bed each." Cue to my immediate dissatisfaction with that news...our one son is 6'4", and I don't expect our grown adult sons to share a queen bed, seriously?! Anyway, I said it was unacceptable and not what we had booked. My husband immediately started looking on Airbnb because we would not spend a week with our grown adult children and would sleep uncomfortably. After all, the Mia Reef could not give us the rooms we booked. It was a clear case of misrepresentation, and it left us feeling frustrated and deceived. Our room: The guy behind the desk finally acted like he was doing us a favor by giving us a different room; he said, "Oh, I'm giving you a very good room with a view." Well, upon arriving at our room 6003 (with a king bed), I looked at my husband and said, "This is supposed to be our view; we paid for the "Deluxe Ocean View" room to begin with." Moving on, we are in our room. Here are the general issues we had with our room: Bathroom faucet, when you turn it on, hits the mirror. There's no counter space at all to lay out a toothbrush and lotion, and all we brought was a toothbrush and sunscreen, again this wasn't a bouge trip by any means. The shower was moldy and disgusting and leaked everywhere on the bathroom floor. The bottom dresser drawer in the room was in the open position the whole time and falling away from the wall. We took a throw pillow from the bed and closed the drawer by putting the pillow in front of it to keep it closed so one of us didn't break a leg when we walked by at night. The door handle on our slider was broken; how hard is it to take a set screw and an Allen wrench and fix it? Our son's room: Our sons were given a room with two beds, 4023 (lagoon, NOT ocean view, as we paid for). It wasn't until I saw their room on the third day that I saw it wasn't two beds but one full/queen bed with a roll-away cot (twin) for our other son; talk about shady bait and switch-on room reservations. The hotel, in general, is dinghy, dirty, and in need of significant updates and repairs. I wouldn't be surprised if the hotel owner(s) are literally just pocketing the money and living high on the hog while the hotel continues to turn into an enormous pile of poopoo year after year. Outside by the pool, some jerk put diapers in the table thing to hold drinks, and the diapers were there for over three days along with other dirty glasses. There is plaster from the building just laying outside that has fallen off. Again, the fish stinks from the head and if the owner(s) don't put the money back into the maintenance of the hotel, well shame on them! Don't even get me started on the sales guys who linger in the lobby, always trying to get your attention so they can sell you a timeshare. I told them the hotel was a POS, and they left us alone after that. The bottom line is DO NOT STAY HERE. It's way overpriced for what you actually get. AI is NOT worth it here. read more

Located on the right side of the island and a five minute walk to the town center. The resort is all inclusive -spa is separate. To enter the property you must cross a small bridge and go through security. No visitors allowed. If not a guest, you must pay a large fee to access the private beach and amenities. The rooms are decent. Nothing luxurious but my ocean view was great. (Photo included) Lots of sea bids making noise outside along with crashing waves. The private beach is sandy and the water calm, clear and very warm. Not too many fish for snorkeling and the depth is around knee high for quite some time. There are tables and beach chairs set up to relax for the day. An open bar is not to far away next to the swimming pool and great for taking advantage of the all-inclusive drinks. Unfortunately they tasted a little watered down. I just had the mesero bring me a cup of tequila to sip off of. Definitely not pure. Not worth the all-inclusive for drinks. Only one restaurant was open during my visit. It was buffet style food. In the morning they would make you an omelette fresh, but had a ton of other selections. The downtown area has really good seafood, it would be a shame to just dine here. Definitely not a culinary adventure. The spa had excellent massage therapists, but way overpriced for Mexico. Almost double what I pay in LA area. I like a massage every day while on vacation, so I found some places within walking distance that were pretty good. Depending what you pay and are in to, this may or may not be the place for you. Nice sandy beaches are not that common on the island, except the public one a few hundred feet away in front of the hotel priced about 75% less. I myself enjoyed the security and accommodations. I also came at a time where the public beaches were closed due to COVID. The hotel having a private one, allowed me access. This was a deciding factor that I think has been removed. If I could do again in regular times, I would just stay at a non-all inclusive and experience the towns culture through food and entertainment. read more

Worst "All-Inclusive" Scam Ever - $850/Night for Chaos "Transport included"? Only from the airport to the boat port. You pay $100 for the boat and extra for the taxi. Our bed blanket disappeared -- never replaced. 20-minute wait for a steak. Wi-Fi so bad you can't send a text. They lured us into a 3-hour loyalty program pitch with a free beach bed voucher -- then accused us of lying when we used it. Humiliating. Pool is falling apart -- broken tiles, missing ladder steps. Only 4 snorkel sets for the entire hotel. Beach tables are tilted: glassware slides off. Rooms are surrounded by thousands of birds -- nonstop noise, feces everywhere, especially on the terrace. Don't dry your swimsuit out there. No changing room if you arrive early and your room isn't ready. "Club Mia" promises early check-in, late check-out -- got neither in two rooms. My in-laws got food poisoning from one of the restaurants. Our hairdryer literally caught fire. They called us at 9PM to check our 8PM dinner reservation. Kids club? 12m², one slide, and only for 5+. Called reception for towels -- 15 minutes of busy signal. Booked our departure taxi 3 days in advance -- they forgot, then scheduled it an hour late. When I asked for better service, they told me to go to the Ritz. For $850/night, I expected Club Med quality. At Club Med, I pay $300 and feel like royalty. Even the maintenance guy fixing our broken table admitted complaints are constant -- staff included. Avoid this place at all costs. read more

This was my second time staying at Mia Reef. The staff are wonderful, but there is a limited food selection. The resort is in major need of general maintenance. General wear and tear has not been addressed including a leaking ceiling in the buffet restaurant. Upon check-in we were prompted to visit with the "resort concierge" where we were instantly urged to buy a timeshare. After a long travel day, we just wanted to get checked in and settled. I had to tell the gentleman several times that we were not interested before he would give us our room information. The most disappointing aspect of our trip was the Super Bowl. We were encouraged to spend an additional $350 USD (for up to 4 people) to attend their "exclusive" Super Bowl party. This included snacks and canned beer. We opted out of paying the additional charge as we had already paid over $2,000 USD for a long weekend in this "all-inclusive" resort. We chose to watch the 1st half of the game in town, and return to the resort to watch the 2nd half. We were told by a bartender the game would be televised in the main bar area. Upon our return, all tv's were turned off in the main bar, and we did not get access to watch the game in our room, although we tried with several different apps. I feel completely ripped off with their offerings considering the cost to stay at this resort, the negligence in routine maintenance, and their offerings for the Super Bowl. If you plan to vacation on Isla Mujeres, a few night's stay at Mia Reef is a must. The all-inclusive hotel on its own is average, but the beach! The beach is its bread and butter. Mia Reef is located right on prime real estate - with the best views, snorkeling, beach and tourist attraction: King's Pool / Piscina del Rey. The beach along Mia Reef is where ALL of the tour boats and excursions post up to snorkel and swim. If you have kids, this is a great all-inclusive resort because you can sunbath and still watch your kiddo 10-feet away in the crystal clear water just up to their tiny little ankles. They also have a pool, games and activities all day (morning yoga, dance classes, kids activities, nightly kid-friendly performances). Food was okay - my sister and I mainly dined at the ceviche bar. Micheladas were top notch. The resort also has free bikes to rent, which you can take across the bridge and into town for day exploring. Staff was really friendly, check-in is at 3pm; check-out is at noon. They offer room service but it's not included in the all-inclusive. King's Pool / La Piscina del Rey is a nature made swimming hole located right on the Mia Reef property, and you can walk over for a swim. However, due to seasons and the tide, it does close. We were there in October and the pool was engulfed by the ocean, so no access was allowed. Non-hotel guests are able to pay a daily rate (believe it was $75) to access King's Pool and hotel amenities. We rented a premium room with direct access to the beach and our own cabana. My only complaint about our stay was we never got room slippers - which was much needed since the outside humidity mixed with cold rooms creates condensation on the floor (plus sand). If you are NOT with kids, do stay here but I think 2 nights is enough. Do 2 nights at Mia Reef and then a few more nights across the bridge and closer into town for more action. We love Mia Reef. The staff are wonderful. Room is well kept and clean. We became members in 2019. Lots of perks with membership! Spa is so great, best massages we have ever had! The buffet is very nice for the whole family. Very kid-friendly. They had Disney character show one night! Beautiful beautiful beach. We cannot recommend this place enough. We have been to Puerto Vallarta and a few other resorts in Cancun area, but loved this one the best. We go at least once a year. The island is so fun to drive and spend a day shopping. You rent a golf cart. The catamaran sunset cruise is beautiful and we had a romantic dinner one night that was delicious with a beautiful view. read more

I've never wanted to go home more. I supposedly went on vacation and I'm going home starving and sleep deprived. #1 do not expect good food. There is no good authentic Mexican food anywhere on the island. When I tell you we searched. We searched high and low. Everything was disappointing. The all inclusive food was some of the worst. Sizzler seemed like a 5 star restaurant compared to this. The only saving grace was the coffee and the freshly grilled steak and shrimp. Other than that, the ceviche was good but just expect salt and pepper. Not actually fresh salsas or any spice at all. #2 DO NOT STAY IN A VILLA Unless you want to smell bird poop all day and hear 1000s of birds squawking 24/7. ALL DAY AND ALL NIGHT. your room actually comes with disposable ear plugs that do nothing. Sleep is basically impossible unless you have ear plugs and sleep with a pillow over your head. And you still hear the birds 24/7. They feel like they are inside your room. That's how loud they are. Villas are not worth it even for a second. The location of this hotel is amazing and out of this world but it ends there. Cannot wait to go home and eat and sleep. read more

The outside area is a 5 but the room was a 2. The beach the water and the staff was AMAZING!!! The pool was nice and the beach is amazing... the water was the perfect temperature. For a resort the food was not bad, except that restaurant on site that you make reservations for... SKIP THAT. We dined along with at least 3 other groups/couples that left and went to the buffet after. At the buffet the morning omelettes were a winner. The lunch pasta bar was always great. Dinner was always changing which actually was nice. But the room... I could get past the size because our view was breathtaking but being right by the ac units we couldn't really enjoy the balcony because of the hot air pumping from the machines. The pillows were AWFUL. Our shower head moved. (It was in the ceiling, see pictures) Mold around our faucet on the sink. (Pictures) a clear case, in general of redoing a hotel and deciding to cut corners, not patch, and not invest in wood glue. read more

I booked direct with the hotel and communication was spot on, including transportation from the airport to Mia Reef, but not so much after checkout. We did an all inclusive package. Check-in went well and our room was ready and got the room and view paid for. The room is not modern and there are no USB ports for charging devices. We soon discovered the food in the buffet/cafeteria was mediocre at best. The Cevicheria taco, is horrible. The Las Marías restaurant which required a reservation was outstanding. I was very disappointed in the mini bar which was inclusive of our stay. The mini bar had two waters, two beers, two sodas, and three candy bars. This is laughable, whenever I've stayed at other resorts, such as the RIU for example, a mini bar there has several cocktail choices, a half a dozen beers if not a tap, wine, juices and at least four waters. When booking, at the Mia it suggests it has a managers reception, there was no managers reception during our stay. We had one day left for our stay when I got an emergency call from the United States that a family member had taken a serious fall and was in the ER. Needless to say, that ended our visit at the Mia Reef Resort. We had to leave one day early. And getting out of Mexico from the Mia in an emergency situation is not easy, nor cheap. I emailed the Mia Reef twice, once on their website, and secondly to the representative who facilitated my booking. I emailed requesting they consider refunding me a partial amount of my unused day. The nightly stay was $357, all inclusive which neither were used. I did not receive a response to these two emails. I gave it a couple of days and messaged them on Facebook and there has been no response. When I Facebooked to Mia during my stay inquiring about the spa hours, I had a response in a couple minutes. Nope, don't do it! This will not be the dream vacation you hoped for. read more

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS RESORT! Let's begin with how the check in process was. We payed the remainder of our balance which was standard procedure and things were okay. As soon as we were done checking in, the staff was immediately persistent on us (my family and I) to book a "breakfast meeting" in order for them to attempt to convince us to invest in their timeshare (which the owner became offended when calling him out, even though that's what it is). The only reason my family and I agreed to hear them out was to receive a discounted sunset catamaran excursion. We then went up to our room in this super outdated elevator that was basically hanging by a thread and my goodness things went downhill. The pillows were super uncomfortable to sleep on, the furnishing/details were super cheap, our water pressure was basically spewing out instead having a smooth stream, and the mini fridge was poorly stocked. Then, my brother and sister-in-law's room card-reader was malfunctioning and it broke on them 2 days in a row, having to wait at least 30 minutes for someone to fix the situation just to get inside their room. The only good thing about our room was the beautiful ocean view, but even then the amount of birds surrounding the area was revolting. Moving on to the food...HORRIBLE! Literally 1/10 on the food considering the only "restaurant" open all day is the buffet. They have a cevicheria but it was closed during our whole stay (July 2-July 7) and then one other restaurant, Las Marias, that required booking one day before and only open for dinner time. We were able to eat at Las Marias only one of the nights and the food was at best 5/10. To top it all off, there was only ONE bar for the entire resort and closed at 10:30 every night. The entire place was super under-staffed and although the waiters were nice, they were forgetful in bringing our drink orders. When going out on the beach, we constantly had to wait extended periods of time to receive basic supplies that were included with our stay (beach towels, snorkeling gear) due to low resources. This resort claims to be 5-star hotel yet it's anything but that. I will never be staying here again and I hope more people are saved from the horrible experience we had. read more

It's a nice resort, but the food is not all that. They only have the buffet and the ceviche as your option to eat during the day and the buffet and the other restaurant where you have to make advance reservation & the menu is the same everyday. The daily activities are very limited that they cancel it a few times that we were there. The employees are very friendly, hardworking and helpful. The beach is fabulous with the water up to my knee or waist in a lot of areas. It's kind of like a sand bar. The tourist boats bring all the tourists in this area for snorkeling and swimming. It's a public beach, so you can just stay somewhere else and come to this side of the island and enjoy the beach. read more

It is hard to rate this place. The beach can not be beat, the snorkeling is right there its beautiful. Most of the staff are good. The hotel itself needs work. I don't really know where to start. Food, Breakfast is good, lunch is OK you can get shrimp tostadas, burgers, dogs, wings, nachos, dinner wasn't great at the buffet or restaurant but you should be able to find something edible. The hotel is not handicap friendly at all! I would highly recommend not staying here if you have mobility issues. We had many issues that came up during our stay but here are a few. Check in, we were 3 ppl for our room. Our res was for a room with 2 beds in the main hotel. They said they didn't have any and were giving us an "upgrade to a villa". This villa was more like a punishment lol.The villa had 1 bed so my son had to sleep on a rollaway. I need a knee replacement and the villa we got was the very furthest room from the resort and up 2 flights of steps. We lost power several times (hot no aircon) and our toilet stopped working at one point and the shower water smelled like rotten eggs. When you gkt.out you smelled like a hot fart, seriously. You can not flush the toilet paper out there (we didn't) The swim up bartender refused to wait on us. He would wait on every Spanish speaking customer no problem. He would just look at us. We were tipping a dollar a drink so that wasn't the problem. Us being white non Spanish speaking seemed to be. He also ignored a woman who ordered 1 drink and waters for her kids. Took 15 min for her to get it. He just kept washing dishes so it wasn't just us.His name was jeorge I believe. Drinks that come from the ceviche bar are the best. Our favorite waiters were Mike and Jerry!! They have no map of the hotel (we asked) and give you zero info about what they offer activities or food places. I didn't find out about the Burgers and wings for lunch until half way through our stay. There is one restaurant area that requires reservations the menu switches every other day but it only has two menus so if you eat there 2X you are eating the same stuff. There isn't enough water in the fridge to stay hydrated and make morning coffee so I went to the lobby to get coffee. The machine didn't work. I went down 2 days later they replaced the machine and it still didn't work! I tried to "rent" snorkle equipment every day and was told no we need it all for a class. Thes are A FEW of our issues. This isn't a high end resort and the price reflects that. Most of the waitstaff work their asses off to make your stay nice however if you are expecting the Ritz this is more a holiday inn....Also the villas are absolutely covered in bird shit...it smells and I am not exaggerating. My wife and I spent four days and three nights at Mia Reef and would go back in a heartbeat. In fact, I wish we had stayed a couple of more days. I don't know when Mia Reef was constructed but it's not brand new. However everything that I saw, from the lobby to our room, the bar and beach was clean, attractive and in good repair. Since Mia is all inclusive we decided to take all our meals on site. And we ate primarily at the buffet. I was impressed with the diversity of the menu. While mostly serving Mexican style food, there was plenty for the vegetarian and the American style food lover. The breakfast buffet offered the standard fare as well as a made to order egg/omelette grill. Plus plenty of bacon. The bar tenders were friendly and efficient - beer on tap was limited to lager and amber Dos Equis. Didn't try any mixed drinks other than a NSFW drink regarding ducks' bodily functions. We ate too much and drank too much. Spent too much time in the water and enjoyed the evening entertainment. And came home tired. While tipping is optional we chose to tip the cleaning lady, bartenders and waiters. I would suggest taking plenty of ones of you choose to do so. My only complaint would be heat and the humidity. Both off the charts. But other than that, good times. read more

We came here on a day pass, $55/adult and 30ish per kid (around $165 total for two adults and two kids ages 9&6). On day pass, it's 9-6 pm so by the time you get there, the 4 day beds available are taken but so many beach chairs and tables! Buffet closes at 11:30 and resumes at 1 pm for lunch so if you get there, don't wait to eat! Food was good. Buffet but it's not bad for a buffet and they have full size shrimps not the tiny ones. WiFi is excellent! And can be used on the beach! Fish tacos and pina colada's are the way to go! There are waiters eagerly serving them up! Fish tacos available at 1 pm-4:30, it's in the little restaurant outside of main area. Shrimp tacos are outstanding too! We liked it so much, we checked in the next day for the rest of our stay! Nice family friendly all-inclusive resort on Isla Mujeres. The highlight is really the North Beach which is considered to be ranked 8th in the world--a protected cove with crystal clear water and shallow. The resort is located a short 5 minute walk to Hidalgo Street which is the main tourist walking street with local restaurants, bars, cafes, shops. Service was great at the hotel. We also loved their fish, shrimp, and octopus tacos served right in front of the beach and pool. read more

First all inclusive experience for me! Shout out to Yisele for taking me on a guided bike tour of the island in the pouring rain! Shout out to Alex for being attentive and humorous as he served us coffee for breakfast. The marble tile in the lobby is going to break someone's neck and is a huge liability-the lobby should be resurfaced for safety reasons. 360 degrees of panoramic paradise makes this resort one of my favorite locations in the world! The bridge over the channel to the hotel is iconic and magical. Snorkeling on the back side was nothing short of phenomenal, and the stormy waves visible from our room's balcony felt exhilaratingly close! Live music of any kind would have really taken the experience up a notch. Close to Sea Hawk Dive Shop and the hotdogs wrapped in bacon carts. I'll be back! read more

Two starts for the waiters and the bartender walking around the beach offering drinks and making sure everything was ok. First 4 days were great! After that it went downhill I noticed the same food was being used from the previous day. No big deal we can go out and eat. But besides that everything was going great!! Amazing beach with great staff. The next day we were on our way to the beach when one of the ladies stopped us for the second time to check out their membership so we went ahead. They tried to force on their membership on us but we kindly declined and you could tell they were not happy with us after that. On our fifth night the power went out! It was out for maybe 2-3 hours. That same night we found two COCKROACHES in OUR BED! Yes just crawling around my husbands leg. It was also bitting us. We get it, it's an island with bugs but we let the front staff know and they kind of shrug it off like it's happened before and has someone come kill it for us. Only one because the other critter escaped and was still somewhere in our bedroom. We asked if we could get another room or maybe another bed because we have a toddler with us. No was their answer.... they said they would follow up the next day.. no one followed up on it Next day (our last night there) Everything was going ok until 2 when the power went off AGAIN! We didn't mind that either since it was light out we went on with our day. Then at around 8pm lights were still out and the lobby started to smell like gas. We asked for a refund for the last night since we didn't want our 2 year old to be inhaling has but that wasn't possible either "our manager isn't here" I understand it's not receptions fault because the power went off thought the whole island but the least they can do is have a manager onsite to let us know what's going on! This island is BEAUTIFUL but I wouldn't give Mia reef another try. read more

For an all-inclusive resort we loved it. Before, we stayed at a big all inclusive resort and it was too overwhelming. Everything you need is right on this little island. Very accessible and beautiful beaches, easy to get into town, easy to find from the ferry stop. The food in the actual restaurant was great, make sure to make a reservation early in the morning! There is only one restaurant but it changes themes each night. We absolutely loved the chefs and the food and we ended up going almost every night. Somebody give the chef and waiters a raise! They made our time really special. The buffet was pretty good. Good food, but definitely buffet style. The drinks are very weak. We started asking for a double just to get the normal amount of alcohol and a drink. The pool was way too cold! And I would also be really nice if they had a hot tub somewhere. When we were there happened to be overcast and rainy and there was really nothing we could do. We loved the guy that worked at the outside lunch shack. He was always in a great mood and really engaged us in a fun way. We got an upgrade when I was there. Our room was beautiful. The problem is... No storage! They need to get some storage in the rooms like actual drawers and way more hangers! They were also no shelves or drawers in the bathroom as well which was very awkward. Overall we would go back. High quality for the price, we even found a Groupon deal! Really beautiful place and nice people. read more

We just got back from Mia Reef, and having time to reflect on our 8 days there I can say it is a solid 4 stars. The Pros: The beach is AMAZING! And Abe is by far the best beach attendant there. The staff is very friendly and will do there best to accommodate your needs. The kings bath! The civecharia on the beach has amazing lunch food. The so so's: The "fancy" restaurant is hit and miss, we went twice and the first time was spectacular, the second was a miss, but give it a try. The main dining are says it opens at 7am for breakfast, but usually closer to 8. The food in the main restaurant was good most of the time, but got a little monotonous. The wifi can go out at times, but you are at a beach resort... get off your device. The cons: none. I really loved this place. read more

Worst hotel we've stayed in! I paid almost 700$ a night but not worth it! It's outdated. Food is horrible, we sat down in one of the restaurants and table was dirty, waitresses didn't even bother to come and clean the table for us we had to move to a different table and bring a chair. The cevicheria please has no sea food! They kept saying due to whether seafood gps bad soon but I'd stayed in other beaches and they serve seafood. No variety at all! We had to pay 140$ I order to use one of the beach beds. In the room the toilet didn't flushed appropriately, pillows were literally like plastic bags, bo extra towels in the bathrooms. Horrible experience! Save yourself and get another hotel. I would never ever stay there again. read more

I would not recommend staying at this hotel. Everything seemed great at first. Most of the staff members were nice but then 9 people out of our group of 13 got food poisoning from the buffet. We were there for a combined bachelor/bachelorette party and it was ruined when most of the group woke up vomiting and having diarrhea that lasted most of the trip. It was our second day there. We talked with the manager and all he said was we could call a doctor and have each person pay $90 to be seen. That's all he could do. We talked with him again the next day and he said unfortunately since we didn't call the doctor to get diagnosed with food poisoning that he couldn't help us. We tried to explain that we would have if he told us that was a must but he only said it was an option. All we asked for was a refund for the day because we had a boat trip that everyone was vomiting on and 1 person couldn't even go. When he refused we at the very least wanted transportation to the airport. There was no accommodation. The next 2 days the rest of the group came down with food poisoning. At the airport about to come home we ran into people who also stayed there who said they were leaving early because they all got food poisoning but that they got a full refund. They also said other people at that resort got food poisoning. We tried to call again to see if we could get a refund like the other family but they said they couldn't find the manager. There is a serious food poisoning problem at Mia Reef and they are not doing anything to help it. Again it was my friends bachelor/bachelorette party and it was ruined by this hotel. It looks nice on the outside but it is way to expensive not to have any accommodations when shit goes wrong. read more

Wifi here is awful, and the food isn't too great, and the drinks aren't too strong, but the staff is very pleasant, the rooms are decent and it damn sure feels like you're away from it all. we were guests at mia reef resort starting on June 30, 2024 hurricane beryl was Forming and heading towards the Yucatán peninsula. on the Fourth of July we was advised we would have to leave a room at the villas and take a room at the main hotel which we did even though the island was not in the cone of the hurricane. The room at the main hotel was $170 per night cheaper than the room we had purchased we had to stay there for two nights when we inquired about getting the difference refunded we were told absolutely not. during the night we had about 35 to 40 mile an hour winds and rain hitting the sliding glass doors to the balcony in no time at all that was water all over the floor of the room because it came in through the side of the doors which had huge cracks. The next day the weather was nice but we was kept locked in the hotel until 6 PM when they allowed us out they had a generator but it only ran for 15 minutes every hour everything was soaking wet and hot. on the Saturday morning when we went to check out I was told I owe them another $83 although they had already charged my credit card for $2400 I refuse to pay and was told that if I did not provide my credit card I would be detained and Mare to miss my flight home, I still refused and my wife paid with her credit card I would like to say that all of the staff was wonderful at the resort except for the people at the front desk Carlos is the man I spoke to who spoke out of both sides of his mouth and wouldn't know the truth if it hit him in the face their favorite thing to say when I asked the question was come back at 11 AM tomorrow the resort is old and run down.This is the first this is the first time I have had a left a negative review on anything but I really thought I needed to say something about this ordeal with this so-called resort. read more

This score is mostly for the beauty of this place. The beaches and water are the best I've seen so far. Although I could, I'm not going to nitpick. I would say don't book a villa because they're a hike and the birds shit everywhere, and it smells horrible. Again, not nitpicking, but the "cubans" they sell aren't Cubans. I still bought and smoked one. The friendly staff seem to outweigh the other, if you look in the right place. It seems they are very loyal to who they are loyal to. Food is good! Clean buffet. We chose the day pass $65 USD - and arrived about 10 (you can go as early as 9) we got 5 chairs - they will put umbrellas in for you wherever you want! Don't eat at the buffet - go to the little shack on the south side of the beach and get all the fish tacos and shrimp tacos you can eat! Drinks are SUPER sweet - asked for mostly shots and backers! Overall, this was a fantastic all-inclusive resort. If I had to choose the strongest point, it would be a close call between either the location or the service. I think have to go with the service as I felt like a celebrity. I couldn't walk 15' without a friendly smile greeting me and asking how they could serve me. When checking in, I was greeted with a tray of drinks to choose from. Sipping a cold beer while being checked in was a new experience for me. When lounging on the white sandy beach, waiters come by taking drink orders. Although they will accept tips, there is never any pressure so you don't have to worry about soggy money when splashing in the clear blue water. And that leads to my close second...location. The resort is actually situated on its own tiny island and is only connected to the rest of the island by a long wooden bridge. The sandy beaches on the north end of the island (Playa Norte) is said to be one of Mexico's top beaches. With sandy beach on one side and rocky reefs on the other, you can lounge around or even snorkel right there at the resort. Although the snorkeling isn't spectacular, it is easy to see plenty of fish while standing in waist deep water. And souvenir shopping is just a short walk away. Those two positive points made this a wonderful resort but I will mention some other things to remain objective. This is an older hotel with some modern upgrades. This was evidenced by the paint chipping off the wooden door to the room that often required three or four attempts to Jimmy it open. The modern bathroom was enclosed by a colored glass wall and door. With a family of 4, a problem with this was that using the bathroom in the middle of the night lit up the entire room. Also, the door did not have a latch or locking mechanism. It made having a sit-down tricky as a breeze could easily blow the door open a tad. The food ranged from outstanding to "just ok" but there was always a good variety. The Cevecheria, a seafood shack, was phenomenal! The shrimp tacos were the best I've ever had and they bring the food right to your lounge chair on the sand. Now the drinks were flowing but they seemed to skimp on the alcohol. The drinks definitely need to be a little stronger. I had read a few reviews prior to my trip. One complaint was that a couple people had things go missing. I had forgotten to close my safe one day, leaving electronics and several hundred dollars in cash completely unsecured. Nothing went missing when housekeeping came through. And a safe is provided in the room for no charge. The other common complaint was the lack of space in the restroom. I have to agree that there were not enough hooks to hang towels and clothes. All in all, this is a resort we will likely return to. read more

I have only been to one other all inclusive that was a LOT bigger, but this one was small and nice if you had a big group of people because it was easy to find each other. The hotel is kept very clean and it is a beautiful property on its own mini island. When we got there, we were greeted in the lobby with a corona and a water which was very nice. The staff was really great and always made sure that we had a drink in our hand. I wish that the pool bar was open later instead of the sports bar since most people seemed to like that one more and we would have to move the party to the other bar. The food was the most disappointing of the trip. The breakfast and the cevecheria were our favorite by far. We went to the two restaurants that were open for dinner, but the options were super limited. You could only do a 6 or 830 pm reservation and you have to be up to make your reservation in the lobby that morning. If you don't have one by 10am, you probably won't be eating at the restaurant that night. I wish they had more late night food as well. The buffet closes at 10:30 and your only option at the resort is a cold sandwich IF there are any left that night. They should really consider having a restaurant open late for people that are up late drinking. Our room was kept well and the fridge was continually stocked with what we needed. We for some reason didn't have chairs on our balcony like everyone else so we moved the ones from inside to the balcony and we came back later and they had replaced them. Overall, I'd love to come back to this island. We felt very safe and it was really fun. I might try a different resort next time though. read more

The resort is small but the prefect size. Did not have to spend much time looking for someone to order a drink. Things that were great at this resort drinks, beaches, swimming pool, bartenders, food waiters, security, and house keepers. What was ok at resort food, towels for room, and front desk workers. So the first night we got to the hotel late and we had 3 people in the room, but gave us a king size bed and a cot. They said they might change us to a different room in morning. Took all day to work this out with front desk the next day but we did finally get the room with two beds. So wasted some vacation time to get this fixed. Make no mistake, this place is paradise and the people are industrious, hard-working, gracious gods on earth. Treat them with respect and they will do the same to you. The location is absolutely unbeatable. If you are lucky enough to stay here, you and your wristband will be the envy of all the other tourists who will see you and be all, "Damn, you're on that island next to the island, aren't you?" The food has been very good. The All Inclusive has desayuno, la comida, y la cena at the hotel restaurante Sarymar. Only a few days it was kind of a hit or miss but town is so very close, it is a good motivation to get off the resort and explore. Please remember, if you purchase the All Inclusive plan, you are paying for having drinks and meals included. Hence, All Inclusive. You are not paying for a ready and willing slave. If that is what you seek, I advise you to hop in a time machine and travel back to the 18th century and have at it. That being said, these folks are working around the clock, and that CAN be taken literally. They are working almost 24/7 to make accommodations and facilities as comfortable as possible. Tipping goes a long way. So you should do it. For reals. Do it. A word on the WiFi: we stayed in the villa by the sea and they did not have WiFi in the room but there is access in the lobby and restaurant areas. All THAT being said, if you're going to obsess over your Internet connectivity while your on a tropical island with the ocean right at your feet...reevaluate your priorities. Seriously. In case you haven't noticed or forgot, you're by the beach. Shame on you if you're going to let all of that go to waste just to upload pictures or play Candy Crush (real and actual things people were doing while the ocean, sun, and fun were just steps away). Lastly, get yourself in line before you come here. Grab a phrasebook, make sure you exchange your money to pesos (small bills whenever possible), and leave your ego at customs.
