Here's your detail: Upon visiting this restaurant, my party and I encountered a number of disappointments. The chicken tenders were overcooked, kids pizza was only bread and cheese, burger was bland with soggy AND stale chips, buffalo chicken sandwich came out missing ingredients, and dry grilled chicken sandwich were all underwhelming in terms of flavor and quality. You are up charged for everything! If you would like to pay $90 to feed 5 people lunch, this is your place. To make matters worse, we never received any refills, and the soda options were very limited. We didn't see our waitress at all until it was time for the check. Love, love loved the laid back buzz of Breakfast at the Nags Head Cafe. Be forewarned it is a popular and always crowded place and be prepared to wait outside. The decor is Vintage OBX with a lot of Knotty Pine here and there. However most of the young staff may never have seen Knotty Pine before being hired. Every thing we tried was not only tasty but it was well prepared and the portions were equal to the slightly higher then most OBX breakfast AYCE places. We had all kinds of Entrées and sides no one in our party of four was even slightly disappointed by any of their choices. The decor is fitting and the lunch menu looks interesting. Overpriced. Paid $40 for a kids pizza (20 layers of cheese on bread; "pizza") and a chicken sandwich that couldn't be finished. In order to get fries you have to pay more otherwise you get stale chips. You have to pay additionally for a slice of cheese. You have like 3 soda options. Food has no taste or seasonings to it. Service was hardly there. Just enough to put the order in. By the end of it we just ended up leaving hungry. Save your money and take it to somewhere that is worth it. *also, based on the owners responses to the other low reviews on here I fully expect a rude response instead of taking our experience and providing better service for others or even an apology. Nags Head Cafe is a great little family- owned place to have a delicious breakfast or lunch! Last week my husband, grandson, daughter and I had lunch twice there and enjoyed it tremendously! Was visiting Nags Head and ventured to this spot on a whim for some tasty brunch. Each member of my party enjoyed our food selections (the avocado toast special, the beachcomber omelette, the crispy chicken and biscuits, and biscuits and gravy) and beverages. Our server, Stuart was very personable and gave excellent recommendations. I personally do not like Bloody Marys but this spot does it very well and came close to converting me. My friends enjoyed their cold brew and mimosas (fresh squeezed orange juice!). We enjoyed this place so much that we ended up going back a second time before heading back to our hometown. read more

This was a nice cafe, dog friendly. The ordering process is a little bit different if you're sitting outside - you order inside at the bar, and they'll bring it out to your table. The food is great! Fresh orange juice, tasty, strong coffee, and a tasty breakfast of biscuits and gravy with some fried chicken strips. They were also happy to fill our reusable coffee mugs, which was a nice touch. ONHC seems to always be closed seasonally when we are here or when we get around to trying it. This time we thought of it early enough in the Fall to give it a try for late Sunday breakfast. We made it in just under the wire as they stop serving breakfast at 12:00 noon. This may have contributed to our less than stellar breakfast. We found this an OK place for standard American breakfast. We both ordered eggs and sausage and grits. Ms T had a biscuit and I skipped the bread. There is not much any restaurant can do to enhance or screw up over-easy or scrambled eggs. These were fine, no issues. We both liked the sausage. It was nicely flavored with a little spice, but not over-done with sage. The only issue was that it was served at room temperature. We assumed they fry up a bunch of patties and since it was about 15 minutes before the end of the breakfast hour, they had been sitting around for a while. They do have very high-quality grits. They are coarse with great corn flavor. They needed a bit of salt, not much. Ms T found her biscuit to be under done and doughy inside. There was nothing remarkable or bad about this Old Nag's Head Café breakfast. If it is close to where you stay, give it a try. It has a nicer café feel than Stack'em High or Jolly Roger. Our service was good even of the server did say, "awesome" to absolutely everything we said. But then, maybe we are just awesome. I want to go back for dinner, so hopefully we will make it before they close for the season. read more

Down for a quick trip to OBX and always like to find new spots to eat. Popped into Nags Head Cafe for a late breakfast and it did not disappoint. Not only was the food delicious (BLT's, sound sider, omelet) but the staff were the friendliest folks. We asked if there was anyway we could get an order of onion rings even though it wasn't lunch and they were kind enough to accommodate. We are visiting OBX for the first time ever from NYC with our pups. We saw this place was let friendly, so we decided to come here for breakfast and it did not disappoint! The food was AH-MAZING! Cute place! Updated: It's peak season and different times but we did get right in. Service was a bit slow but we weren't in a rush. Initial reaction- cute little 'typical' diner. At a closer glance it definitely needed some cleaning. Small menu. All of our food was good. The French toast plate was huge and really good. Omelettes were stuffed. My honest review was by no means intended to offend the owner/ manager. Let me provide clarity around my cleaning statement in my review- the staff was definitely using masks. I did witness them sanitize equipment. With that said- the window sill needed wiping down, our booth needed wiping down it was sticky and crumby. I fully understand peak season, short staff, and restaurant turnover so I didn't think too much about it nor did I mention it during my visit. My wife and I have been here several times for breakfast. We really enjoy the food and the staff is always super friendly even when slammed. This spot was fine, but definitely nothing to write home about. We waited at least 20 minutes just to get our drinks, and those with hot chocolates did not even receive them until long after we had received our food. My mom's dish had a hair in it and we had to send it back. My chicken and biscuits was adequate, but it came out lukewarm and the portions were tiny. I'm from the west coast and eagerly await ordering sweet tea at every chance I get when I visit the east coast; this place was a huge disappointment in that department. The tea was not sweet at all. Though our waiter was nice, he was clearly overwhelmed as it was only him and one other server waiting on a full restaurant, leaving everyone waiting far too long and receiving cold food. An update: after posting this review, I got a pretty nasty response from their owner who told me my experience wasn't true, and reading other reviews shows me that this is a trend. Makes me want to lower my review to one star, and absolutely does not make me want to give this place a second chance. All I have to say is wow... apparently customer service and "the customer is always right" are dead here. read more

Bottom Line: A cute cafe that is probably awesome for breakfast. Old Nags Head Cafe is a charming restaurant with a large selection of breakfast foods and some lunch foods until 2pm. They then reopen for dinner at 5pm. I imagine this place is awesome for breakfast but I felt like the lunchtime selection of a few salads, sandwiches and some other items was a little slim. I decided on a Caesar salad with grilled Mahi Mahi for $15. The fish was very fresh but a little under seasoned. Others in my party had the Mahi on a sandwich and felt the same. Our waitress was friendly and I fully appreciated that she gave us to go cups for our sodas. Overall, this won't be a go-to spot for me for lunch but I would like to give it a whirl for breakfast. read more

Sweet hidden little gem! Thanks to Yelp once again I based tonight's pick on what we were craving and who had the best star count. Location is right on beach road. Looks like a cozy beach house. Parking is tight. We walked right in expecting a wait considering it was 5:30pm. Pleasantly no wait at all. The place looked great inside. Our server was very friendly and complimented our son for having such great manners. We try... The menu offered many appetizing choices. I was there for fried seafood! It was done right also! Great portions, crispy coating, and cooked perfectly. My only slight observation was I felt it lacked seasoning. Otherwise it was delicious! We even had leftovers to take with us. The food is all made to order so it may take a few extra minutes, but totally worth it. They can handle large groups as well. We Lee going to try to make it back there this week. Excellent food, super friendly staff and pet friendly! We stopped with our pup for breakfast and were glad we did! There is an outside seating area for those with pets. It is a grassy area with picnic tables and large umbrellas for shade. There was a nice breeze off of the ocean as well. The food was made fresh and absolutely delicious!!
