Umm..I've never had a shrimp sandwich that was just fried shrimp put on a bun with coleslaw and cheese. Coleslaw was "dry". Cocktail sauce was waterie. Was not great. I just ate the shrimp as a meal LOL Another couple just came in and asked for a window seat and the lady turned around I guess you can have that one but they wanted to sit behind me so they could see outside, the ocean she told him no!!! We decided to go to dinner for our 15th anniversary. We waited on the porch for over 30 minutes, which was fine, however, people who came in after we did were seated and ate before we did. After being seated, someone took our very simple order of a pimento cheese sandwich with a side of fries and a salad with tuna on top. Our waitress brought two glasses of water and never came back. We waited over 30 minutes watching other people being served and eating including the two couples brought in after us. When we told the hostess what happened she just let us leave without any explanation. We wasted an hour and a half there. Never again. read more

Surprisingly, it has been three years since we have dined at Sam & Omie's. We squeezed in lunch just before departing from the Outer Banks for this stay. We had a good meal. Ms T's shrimp were beautiful, larger than in the past. They were a little bit underdone (as in still translucent). This is our second instance of this during this six-week stay. It is a shame because they are serving very nice shrimp. We understand that you do not want overcooked, rubbery shrimp, but there is right doneness that we have come to expect. I had a barbecue sandwich. I'm not sure if I have had one here before. I used to be careful to save my barbecue consumption for barbecue joints, but there are many non-barbecue places that serve it as a sandwich, and I have found that most of them are pretty good. This was one of the good ones. It was much too generous for me to eat, so half came home. We have been coming here for over 10 years, and I always liked their slaw. It was what I called North Carolina style, fine grind with a good balanced dressing. They have changed it. It is now diced; a little too coarse and the formerly well-balanced sweet and sour dressing has lost its backbone (the sour is gone). It was OK on the barbecue sandwich, but as a side dish it was found to be lacking. I guess that's what Texas Pete is for. This was a disappointment. I have an obsession with coleslaw and thought I could count on it here. The number of places that make good slaw is dwindling. Slaw and undercooked shrimp aside, this is still a four-star place. read more

Wholesome breakfast. Mostly locals on Fridays that have chipped beef, which is an acquired taste but very good. Very friendly service ambience is very Fishing oriented. Would come back here every time. I'm in the area. Highly recommended for breakfast. read more

Always like to ask the locals werever we travel what there favorite restaurants are, that's what brought us here our first night which also brought us back for breakfast! Good basic food in a rustic setting from the freshest fish(think flounder and shrimp)to southern staples like cornbread and collards for dinner. Breakfast has all the standards plus a few specials on the blackboard. If you see Fish cakes and eggs don't sleep on that one! The interior and tables give the place a rustic feel, matching its storied history on Nags Head. We stopped in for dinner around 7pm on a Saturday. No wait and we were seated straight away. It was our server's second day, a fact we never would have known had she not dropped it on casual conversation. Service was great! I had the crab dip for an appetizer and broiled crab cakes with collard greens and black beans and rice for my entree. Both were excellent, though the crab cakes felt a bit on the small side with heavily shredded crab meat whereas I often prefer slightly larger chunks or crab meat in a crab cake. Collards were great, well cooked but not obscenely mushy. This is always our first stop when we arrive in Nags Head, and probably won't be our last stop this trip! read more

Definitely a mom and pop place... plus very busy! The service is pretty good and friendly. They have a bar area too. This place has been around for 87+ years so the place is dated, which also makes it special. Went for lunch and highly recommended the shrimp sandwich. The shrimp was perfectly battered and fried. They didn't skimp on the shrimp too... they were a very good size. If you have to do non-seafood, the burger was good. After you eat go across the street to the pier or beach. You can also park there if the restaurant parking lot is full. read more

This place is worth the wait!!! Talk about some fresh, homestyle, beach eating! My family and I throughly enjoyed this place again this year. Our service was excellent, our drinks were strong and delicious and the food was amazing! I got the shrimp sandwich and it was the best meal of the Nags Head trip. My drink, the painkiller, was also the best drink of the beach week! My husband loved the fried sampler with flounder and clam strips. My daughters also loved the clam strips too! The staff were so friendly, supplying my kiddos with crayons and coloring papers and getting my overly beach tired toddler crackers to enjoy before the meal arrived. The ambiance is small, homey beach vibes. Exactly what you would want from a staple restaurant in this area. We arrived around 4:15 for supper and still had a wait, but I promise, the wait is worth it! read more

I got a cheddar, mushroom and pepper omelette with hash browns and was most pleased; it all tasted like something mom would make. Ambience is hard-core local in a wonderful way; Sam & Omie's has been here forever and when you're a community fixture, you gather things. Memories. Poems written by locals, lovingly, about the staff. Pictures of seafaring conquests and lifelong friends. Those sorts of things. I've read reviews claiming the service was bad here. I don't believe them. Sure, even the very best of staff can have the very worst of days. That's just how life goes. But I think a more likely explanation can be found in the adage, "The vibes you put off are the vibes you get back." I saw an old white-bearded gentleman come in and take a seat at the bar. The barkeep called him by name, saying he was a little late today. I don't know what he'd been through, I suppose it could be most anything, but I watched every single member of the staff speak to him and love on him in various ways. It was obvious he wasn't just a customer, he was family. We have lost our way as a country; so much anger, so much hate, so much name-calling and demonizing and violence. How much better would America be if we all had our own Sam & Omie's, where faults were forgotten, differences overlooked, and we were loved through the rough spots? read more

We were seated relatively quickly but no one ever came to wait on us. The dining room was mostly empty, it was not busy on a Monday night in March. The hostess sat a single at the table next to us after we had been sitting for a bit and the waitress came right to him. took his drink order, came back with his drink, took his dinner order and left to place his order as we sat there at our empty table with menus and no drinks in front of us. I went here out of town for a birthday. It is a little hole in the wall establishment and my bucket list of places. Although not what I would say is my go to place, but fabulous! Since we were staying right down the street from this restaurant, we decided to walk there for dinner. We were glad we decided to walk since the parking lot was full. There is a bar and also numerous tables. The majority of our party got seafood entrees, which everyone enjoyed. We also tried the chicken and burger both were good. We did not care for the seasoning on the green beans but everything else was good. Connie was our server and she was extremely friendly. We had a great time talking to her. We also tried the restaurant for breakfast. The food was tasty but not piping hot. The biscuits were delicious. We went early and it did get extremely crowded while we were there. read more

Waitstaff are nice. The food quality is inconsistent. Got breakfast two days in a row and the "hash browns" (which are not shredded hash browns, these are more like what I would call home fries) were well seasoned and fried day one, then completely plain the next day. I got sausage patties and they were pretty burnt / well done. Small diameter. Edible but not the best I've had. The most egregious issue which is why I am writing this review is that I ordered a "nitro cold brew" $6 on the menu. I received a canned double shot espresso mocha 130 calories , essentially a canned latte. I'm sure it was delicious , but it was not what I ordered. When the waitress returned I let her know this was not what I was expecting. When I asked for clarification on what the menu said, she just said what she gave me is what "replaced" the nitro cold brew. So... the restaurant and the waitress knows it's not a nitro cold brew but are saying it is and just giving out something entirely different without any notice to the customer. Weird! Ok. I got biscuits and gravy the day before and not terrible. Could have used bigger sausage chunks and a bit more flavor in the gravy. Since I'm giving my feedback might as well give all of it ! Drip coffee is also watery but people tend to like that and I drink strong coffee anyway so I am biased. I'm mostly upset about the nitro and annoyed for my partner who got good breakfast potatos one day, then entirely phoned in potatos the very next day. We stayed in Nags Head for four days and dined here three times because it was so good. The she crab soup was the best we've had on the eastern seaboard. We also had the grilled tuna as dinner entree and a sandwich. Cooked perfectly and great seasoning. We also had the broiled shrimp and scallop dinner and it was delicious. I've been coming here since I was a little girl. It's been consistently fresh and delicious. Today we were told it would be a 40 minute wait but only waited for about 20 minutes. We had the omelette, crab Benedict, and pancakes. Everything absolutely fantastic. It was the best Benedict I've ever had. I wore my 30 some year old Sam and Omie's shirt in and got lots of compliments. The staff couldn't have been friendlier. We left with a couple new shirts and great memories! read more

We tried to eat here for breakfast today. We checked in about 10am and were told 35 minutes. When I checked with the hostess at 10:50am, I was told they called our name about 20 minutes ago. We had been sitting in the small porch waiting area the whole time. Never did they say our name of Teddy nor party of 9. None of us heard it. I was basically told "Sorry you can't eat here, the waitress is leaving" despite the restaurant being open for lunch as well. I understand it was busy, we were a big party and things happen, but for the hostess to not apologize and basically turn us away was disappointing to say the least. I had to go out any tell my family, including 4 kids, that we waited for nothing and wouldn't be eating breakfast there. It was terrible customer service to say the least. Please do better next time. I know my family won't be giving it a next time given how we were treated this morning. read more

Used to love eating here every year for the past few decades. Brought my MIL for the first time this Year in early July. Pretty short wait which was unusual for lunchtime, so we were excited about that. Sat 5 of us at a 4 top, because we didnt mind. Waitress was super nice at first when she got our drinks and took our orders and then something must have snapped while she was helping someone else. When she brought our food out, she had not removed all of the apps, plates or refill drink cups, so we held them out of the way so she could fit our meals on the table. She was offended by this apparently, maybe thinking we were trying to give them to her instead of just making room like we were, and dropped our plates down on the table To grab the dishes out of our hands. Even other patrons looked over at the noise and asked later if everything was ok. She was mumbling something under her breath and walked away after that scene. Then she came back with the check later on and was super nice again since it was time to pay I guess. I gave her a 25% tip on a $80 lunch, because you never know what is going on with someone. As sad as it is, we will never go back because we won't be treated like that again And I have heard more and more people saying they have not be happy with the service there in the last couple of years. Also left a message on their website contact messaging for the owner just to let them know. I was calm, very polite. I did not ask for a refund or discount or anything. My 30 yr. Sam & Omie's tee shirt wore out so I ordered a new one online. It didn't come and the purchase never posted to my credit card, so I called. She was very apologetic, found the order and sent it out that day, no charge for the shirt or postage. That's why they've stayed in business for nearly 90 years! read more

One of the worst restaurant experiences I've ever had! The waitress came over to take our drink order. When we let her know that we were actually ready to order, she gruffly responded "oh I was only going to take your drink order". When we looked surprised, she went ahead and grudgingly took our whole order. My boyfriend ordered a burger, which was shaped like a star... obviously a frozen patty that was overcooked and dry. My "nags header" sandwich, which was a basic grilled ham and cheese, had four slices of ham stacked on top of each other with one slice of processed cheese on each side of the ham. The ham was sliding all over the place. I really couldn't eat much of the sandwich because the whole bottom piece of bread was soggy and wet. Horrible! As we were checking out, the girl behind the cash register asked how everything was. We let her know that we were not happy. She never responded. Simply told us the total price for the meal, never apologized, nothing. I really don't know how this place has stayed in business for so long. read more

Eight of us went on a June Monday at 7:30 based on ratings and everyone loved it. Only a 30 minute wait when most restaurants were 1-2 hours. Sam and Ollie's was awesome and I'd highly recommend adding this to your list of OBX favorites. Broiled seafood was amazing and so much better than the other seafood restaurants we've eaten at in Nags Head. Scallops and flounder were cooked just right with a very tasty seasoning. Best corn bread I've ever had (so moist). Fried oysters were perfect and the Cole slaw and beans & rice sides were excellent. Entire family loved their meal and setting was a fun, quaint seafood shack style vibe with lots of impressive pictures of local fisherman's catches. Right next to Jeanette and great restaurant for lunch or dinner after fishing on the pier. Nice kids playground / park next door and fun way to make the wait go by faster for the little ones. read more

I needed to find a place for a group of 14 and was a little hesitant due to the 3.7 review, but I noticed that the one stars were person's not happy with their dog policy and the other reviews were solid. They set up a great table for our main group and one off to the side. We mostly ordered broiled seafood: fish, shrimp and scallops. This place did not disappoint!!! This is a much older establishment right by Jennette's Pier in Nags Head, and it has an amazing breakfast experience! The inside was small and well kept for the age with decorations that told of the history of the restaurant. The food was also stellar! I had an omelette with sausage, onions, and peppers. Went early near opening, able to be seated right away. Waitress only checked in to take order and bring food. No coffee refill offers and we had to flag down for check after waiting for 10 mins with napkins and trash mounted on our plates. I get it - folks rave about this place. Sam and Omie's is a cute older style beachy restaurant. The staff were super friendly. The food was just okay and in my opinion is expensive for its quality. I paid extra for the "cooked to order" burger hoping it would be something special but it really wasn't. The calamari was good and my she crab soup was the highlight of the meal.
