This was our first time trying Darrell's and we got our food to go. It seems to be a popular place, but was not quite for us. The food was not inedible but was very bland. All of it was quite lackluster but the scallops were good. I also expected the shrimp burger to be a patty similar to a crab cake, but instead it was individual fried shrimp on a bun. I drove down from Chesapeake, VA to eat at Darrell's which I have down numerous times over the years. I ordered fried shrimp dinner and my wife ordered fried oyster dinner. It is the most disappointing meal we have had there. The fried oysters came out and it was pieces not whole oysters and each was about the size of a quarter. They were burnt and dark brown. The side order of cole slaw was a dip about the size of an ice cream dip that did not half fill of the smaii side bowl. Waste of time to drive two hours each way. read more

Great quality food at a family restaurant! This is the first time we've stayed on Manteo side, and stopped to try Darrell's. The inside has more of a family-style feel to it and was very clean. The service was 5 stars, she was on it and very friendly! My husband ordered the Surf & Turf that came with a Ribeye and your choice of seafood, he opted for fried oysters. I ordered the choose two, shrimp & clam strips which were also good! My husband had the seasonal tomatoes in a vinaigrette, which i'll admit was a little different, but he enjoyed them. "Good seafood at a family restaurant in Manteo" We stopped by here on a Wednesday just after noon. The setting felt like an old-school family restaurant, and definitely lots of "fish"/ "beach" themed art around, which makes sense for the location. Service was very friendly-- we were greeted warmly, sat promptly, and checked on regularly. The restaurant was clean and relatively quiet. I ordered the seafood "bowl" option, which had mango salsa, avocado, tomatoes etc., over a bed of rice and your choice of tuna, mahi mahi, or shrimp. I ordered mine with tuna, well-done (rare was also a choice). My daughter got hers with the mahi mahi. We did see that, with a Yelp check-in, there was an option for a free popcorn shrimp appetizer if one orders two entrees and two drinks, but we didn't get a second drink, so I didn't try. Food came in maybe 10-15 minutes or so. It was DELICIOUS. The combination of flavors was amazing. Both fish were great but different-- the tuna was much denser than the mahi mahi, which made it more filling but also a little more chewy (though delicious). The mahi mahi was lighter in both senses. The dishes weren't super-cheap (I think they were about $17 each before tax and tip), but for the high quality, and in a touristy area, I think this was very fair. We had good expectations, given the busy parking lot and the "gold star" reviews, but the food wasn't very good. We got an open faced roast beef sandwich, a mackeral and shrimp special which was fried even though the menu didn't specify that. Darrell's is my favorite place for breakfast in the Outer Banks! If you do visit this adorable restaurant you have to try their sausage. You can get it in either links or patties, which I personally chose patties just because the links appeared to be a little thick for my liking. Their stewed apples were very yummy, with just the right amount of sweetness and cinnamon. Another thing i'd like to note is how sweet our waitress Skylar was! She seemed so kind and genuine that I felt like a true local here at Darrell's. Darrell's was a very nice find for lunch on the main drag in Manteo. It is housed in an unpretentious, folksy building that projects the idea of a hometown restaurant where the locals gather. This might essentially be the case, though they bill themselves as a seafood restaurant. Inside we found a nice homey decor that tended toward a maritime theme. The dining room was divided into three sections. The compartmentalization and the low(-ish) ceiling gave this place a comfortable, cozy feel. We were seated right away and our server was rather quick in getting to us. She did a good job during our visit. The menu featured a variety of tempting options. What I read ahead of time was that seafood and BBQ items were good choices, and indeed those options were available, especially for seafood. My daughter-in-law chose one of her classic favorites, the French Dip sandwich accompanied by fries. My son opted for the Crab Cakes accompanied by Green Beans, Hush Puppies and Cabbage. They both enjoyed their selections. I had eaten breakfast, unlike my companions, and was not as hungry. The perfect option for me was a bowl of the She-Crab Soup. It was excellent. The quality of the fare and the service were both very good. Where I dinged this place for one star, giving it a four-star rating instead of a five-star, were the prices. If I'm honest with myself, I think the folksy appearance probably set my expectations to anticipate diner prices, especially for lunch. The French Dip sandwich was not priced outside of expectations, but the market price for the Crab Cakes was $22.50 and $13 for the soup that day. I think it came down to a bit of sticker shock because of the expectations. The value was not terrible, but a little on the edge. Even so, this place is still worth a try without question if you're looking for a lunch or dinner option in Manteo. read more

I decided to eat here on my second night in Manteo and it was a good decision. It is good value for your money and they're all you can eat Fried shrimp is definitely worth it. I had eaten somewhere more expensive the night before, and was very disappointed so this was a nice and pleasant surprise. The ambience is more relaxed, and it's obviously beach food. It's not five star cuisine but it's tasty and the service is wonderful. My server was more or less handling the whole floor and aside from being just a little bit slow, he did a great job at covering all the tables. Buffalo shrimp is to die for. Fish of the day was Mahi Mahi, and the filet was very thin, kinda stuck to the pan, but it tasted good. Wings were really good. The hot sauce is preeetttty hot. Darrell's Restaurant - a Manteo staple? Its a restaurant that's been here for 60 years, so they must be doing something right... we tried this local staple for breakfast. We got seated right away and greeted by our attentive waitress, Casie. Both of us ordered coffees, they came out fast, but not hot. The mr. ordered a egg platter- 2 eggs, bacon, home fries, and a biscuit. The Mrs Ordered the smothered biscuit and gravy special. Both meals were good, not great. The coffee refills continued to be frequent, but not even warm. Not sure if the warmer is broken, or what, but coffee shouldn't be room temperature. Overall, it was a nice breakfast, would we return? Quaint restaurant. With an 8 top, we walked in with no wait which was nice and unexpected. They were completely out of crab which was disappointing, but they did have plenty of other options to choose from. I will say that the platters that included fried food were not very good. There was just something with the fried taste that was really off. My sister actually said she got an upset stomach after eating hers, which is always a bummer!
