I came here for breakfast with my best friend and the restaurant was packed. We found a spot at the bar and had a great time. The bartender was friendly and the other guests shared this is a favorite local spot. Apparently, there is no cocktail menu so I just ordered a mimosa. Trying a new breakfast place in the OBX sometimes leaves you disappointed BUT NOT The Dunes! Centrally located for entry from 158 or 12....those that know the area know why this is optimal with the summer traffic! As you would expect in the summer, place was packed with a good waiting line but we opted for the bar area seating and sat immediately. Although there was only one server/ bar tender in this section you could tell she was a pro----great job for all the tables and bar seating. Would highly recommend seats here if there's a crowd and you prefer not to wait. Great NC themed OBX interior and decor. Ample parking, which is hard to find during the summer in the OBX. We ordered couple different meals--- for me, tried the buttermilk pancakes and they hit the spot.....good sized and cooked perfect! Wife had the southwest omelette with grits and a biscuit.....biscuit was HUGE and the grits were tasty. Omelette on the larger side and didn't disappoint. We have been coming to Nags Head for 35 years. Dunes became a family favorite long ago and is always a "must" on our dining out list (for dinner). I'm not sure what's happening, but it seems they are struggling. The quality and quantity of the food has gone downhill. Yet prices have risen disproportionately. My entire meal (flounder) was lukewarm (and my "seasonal vegetables" were still cold, obviously having been refrigerated and microwaved). I remember years of having Pamlico flounder there I could not imagine finishing. Tonight, my piece of fish looked like a long thin fish stick. Clearly a flounder filet cut in thirds. My sweet potato was deflated and overcooked and as mentioned already, my veggies were ice cold. The entree was $25.99 - it MAY have cost them $4.00. Other family members' plates were just sad - overcooked burger, rubbery scallops, all delivered by a server we saw exactly once. Saddest $130 dinner for a family of 4 ever! The place was half empty and they seemed fully staffed- something is just off. Sadly, we may've sunsetted our tradition tonight. It's been a good run. Save yourselves the time and trouble or go for breakfast instead. Mulligans, Millers, even Sooeys are light years better! read more

We came to The Dunes in Nags Head as a family of five for breakfast during the week of my daughter's surf competition. Pancakes all around were very good--especially with blueberries. The corned beef hash was decent, and the bacon was tasty too. The wait time was longer than expected, and the table/bar area had a strong cleaning product smell, which was a little distracting. That said, our waitress was very nice and attentive, and parking was no problem at all. Overall, a good breakfast spot, and we'd like to come back and try it for dinner sometime. read more

Took my family here for breakfast on the last day of our 2026 family vacation. There were nine of us, wait time was around 1/2 an hour. Not bad for a group this size in a busy restaurant. Waiter was nice and did an excellent job overall. Food was very good and served quickly. While waiting for our food, a photographer comes to our table and begins taking photos of us with no explanation. He then went over to a computer in the corner of the dining room and printed out three or four photos of our family. Returning to our table he handed the pictures to my wife and daughter. When they thanked him for the pictures he said they were $50.00 or we could go online and pay for digital copies $80.00 or more. When questioned about the digital copies he just said that option cost $80.00 or a lot more. We went there for breakfast, not to be photographed and hear a quilt trip about why we should buy pictures. I left a note on my receipt and left without speaking to a manager or causing a problem. I wasn't sure I could have been objective enough to discuss calmly. The waiter approached one family member as we were leaving and apologized. This review is actually a 4.5 star review. First time here. Food was absolutely delicious. We tried several apps (fried green tomato, oysters mockafella, shrimp and crab dip). All apparently were a hit. Several of us had the fried bounty of the sea. The rest had the Broiled bounty of the Sea. For dessert we tried a slice of the cheese cake, coconut cake and the cheese cake. All were delicious. Thw menu has a good selection and tge portion sizes are good. The addition of meat substitute(s) would help a lot. - I got the Belgian waffle with blueberries - it was nicely browned and hit the spot. We walked in and were greeted by their friendly staff. Plenty of parking; this is located right across from the outlets on the highway. This was my first time visiting, but I recall this place gets crowded and packed the heat of the summer season. By the entrance, they had a small shop for souvenirs. We were seated immediately. Their seating area was big, and it appeared they had a buffet station, but we ordered from the menu. Our server got our drink orders and gave us hush puppies (delicious) that came with a yummy, soft butter. For our meals, we ordered the shrimp and grits and the broiled flounder. We were in the mood for seafood, and this was the spot! If you're new in the area or just visiting, I recommend giving this place a try to bring your family to or to just have a nice date night out. In OBX for a family vacation. Stopped by here randomly based on online reviews. I'm very happy. Restaurant was busy, but not crowded, and the service was super fast. They start with the lightest, fluffiest hush puppies I've ever had, and they were great. The whipped butter complemented them perfectly. I got the "Pick Your Catch" and got the Crab Cake and OBX Shrimp. The shrimp was large, lightly breaded, fried and very fresh tasting. The Crab Cake was very meaty with a great blend of spices. My kids got the Chicken and Waffles, and were happy with them. Wife got the popcorn shrimp, and has happy as well. I tried some and it was yummy Overall, a good vacation dinner. The manager is extremely rude to guests. My husband stepped outside for 5 minutes. I told her I'll call him and she was extremely rude in her tone and immediately gave our table away. Obviously gets some kind of power trip from being disrespectful. I really like the food but after this trip we won't be coming back. Totally ruined our trip here. She's entirely too old to risk her business treating people poorly. Made for mermaids and seafarers, I plundered the place and left with a huge sack of booty!! I found dozens of mermaid gifts: mugs, signs, soaps, salt & pepper shakers, tea towels, jewelry, toys and more! I went a bit crazy over all the cute items, but hey, that's what vaca is for, lol!!
