I get there, and there was 4 ladies working and only me. The nail tech was talking to her coworkers and watching a horror movie on the tv ignoring me completely. I didn't expect a whole conversation with her- but as she was very distracted, she cut my cuticles and was very harsh with the buffing and filing. I decided to give it a second shot. In November, I was scheduled for a C-section and needed to get my acrylic nails removed. I told the nail tech that I wanted my nails to be natural. I just wanted the acrylic off, nails filed and buffed. Needles to say, I had SO many random cuts in my nail beds. Nail tech (a different one than the first) was very distracted with her coworkers. It seems like this place doesn't care for their clients and sees this more as a place where they get to hangout and watch Netflix all day long. Definitely never going back.

However, I did not want a fade (we used to call them "white walls"). Jacob listened to the kind of cut I wanted and did exactly as I requested. For 20 years, every place I've been to in the RGV, the barber wants to used clippers and zip up the sides. Jacob knows how to use clippers, but he took his time and did the job with scissors, and I love the results. All the while, great conversation, a positive and professional atmosphere, clean shop, friendly people... AND very affordable. Highly recommended. The Upper Room Barbershop is located on the south side of the little strip mall on the corner of North 23rd and W. Ivy St. Facing the building from 23rd St., go around the left side where the parking lot is, and in the rear you will see the back entrance with the barber's pole sign. I've also asked a guy at heb with a nice fade, and he directed me to Rositas haircut, there's a licensed barber who works there also in the same area. I'm from Orlando on vacation here in the valley. I found this place driving to family's house and stopped by later in the week when I needed a haircut(I get a haircut every 5 days and I will be here for 2 months). I watched the two barbers (the owner cuts but is rarely there) and went with Elbi, the skinnier barber with the beard after seeing he was the better of the two fade wise. The first cut was acceptable, second cut was awful because I asked for a mid-fade and got a fohawk almost from how high up he went. Being that I didn't have a ton of information on who to go to in the valley I went for my third haircut here and tried to explain exactly how I'd like my haircut. The barber said he couldn't do it because blablabla, it's funny because he almost had it the first time which is why I came back to begin with AND every other professional and LICENSED barber that I've ever been to does the cut with their eyes closed. He finished up and I checked out what he did, being disappointed, I explained in the nicest way possible to correct a few problems I found. He did a quick "fix" and had me on my way. What I didn't see until I got home is that this dude gave me an uneven buzz cut without the least bit of an attempt to blend anything in. I don't get why it's New York style barber shop?
