There are labels for each section (everything from kids books to aviation to romance to politics to fantasy and more)-plus multiple clearance sections where books are $1 a piece! Whether you are an avid reader or just getting into reading, this is the place for you! It is a bit messy-I've yet to find a good bookstore that isn't though, and great things in life aren't perfect :)

Prices are insanely good, as you would expect from a spot like this. You do the work finding what you want, and you are rewarded with an amazing deal. Owner was super friendly, and rang us up himself. You can tell that this place has a lot of love poured into it; the owner was there from opening and his daughter came by from next store to tell us he was on his way to unlock the doors. I am so glad we went (thank you Portland Book Week!).

Those who are TRUE CATHOLICS who read this review will know what I am referring to here. "Gifts" had some religious items "closer to the truth", but still not quite there. Something is happening in our world, and the 'evil one ' clearly has had a hand in it. Still . . . the locations isn't great, but they do have some items. One shouldn't have to search around Portland to find "the truth" in terms of "true religious items". Too much (again) is being messed with.

This store has rosaries of all levels of fanciness, as well as parts for making your own (crucifixes, Mary pendants, beads), saint medals, other chaplets, holy water bottles, and plenty of holy/prayer cards. They have a great selection of books, both those for a popular audience (might I recommend Cardinal Sarah's The Power of Silence), and more liturgical books: missals, all 4 books of the Divine Office, etc. Got my fingers crossed to see a Graduale Romanum next time! There're good kids' and teens' sections as well. I got a comic book Bible, which with my attention span, is the easiest way to get myself to actually spend time reading it :) They have cards for all sacraments, and other occasions. There are plenty of First Communion gift sets - seriously, come here if you know somebody who's having their first communion. I also come here for all my Christmas cards. Studies say Z and Alpha are moving away from drinking and clubs. I know of at least half a dozen microcinemas with a dozen to about 4 dozen seats. Most of them are free. They pack out events. Word Virus does a microcinema, has readings, has art shows, and has other events in their small mezzanine space. In the store they have art, theater, and music books. Art criticism. They also have a good stock of philosophy - good books for your thesis. Think a smaller City Lights https://www.yelp.com/biz/city-lights-san-francisco-2. In the olden days, Powell's had section employee-managers. They would inventory and stock as small as 20' feet of shelves dedicated to a topic. They did the research on new books and ordered them. They priced the used books. If you had a question or sought a recommendation, the section employees were a goldmine. I mined those curated-by-humans shelves for my collection. In my view, those employees could have supported the online business with NY Review of Books- to specialty topic-level recommendations and reviews. At one time the Powell's Rose Room employees took over management of their room. Alas, the Powell's section employee work was judged too inefficient, and replaced. Many friends worked there in the golden age. I see Word Virus and our many small independent booksellers as a continuation of the curated-by-humans era. General AI may be able to read, but can it judge? If you are in the area, visit. If you are visiting bookstores in the neighborhood loop by here. If you have an interest in their topics, visit. If you are researching your thesis in the humanities or arts, visit. And check their events to visit the little community they are building.

Went in with my mom to "grab a few things" and left with an entire basket full of yarns we couldn't just LEAVE there. Secondly, the bookstore itself reminds me of the bookstore Belle goes into to borrow books every day in Beauty and the Beast. If you know you know. It's a whole cozy vibe. Thirdly, the staff and service is top notch. Helpful, funny and a lovely chat. I can't give out more info because I still secretly don't want anyone to go and buy everything I still want to buy.

Selected Stories takes a completely different approach by offering very smartly curated shelves full of exceptional reads. Walk in, find the shelf with your preferred genre, and you'll undoubtedly find your next favorite book. The sheer value in the time I've saved can't be overlooked. Once upon a time I loved spending the day wandering the aisles of much bigger bookstores, but these days I'd rather have a little more guidance. Selected Stories is VERY good at giving that guidance. BONUS POINTS: I've met only two staff members in my half dozen visits and they've both been phenomenal.

The curation is incredibly thoughtful with a great mix of literary fiction, nonfiction, translated works, local, national, and international book prize winners. They even have a small section for children's books. All new books. All with fantastic covers somehow?? You just can't go wrong with whatever you pick up here. The space is so inviting, warm and chic. Small, but mighty! Reminds me of a McNally Jackson, which is A+++.
