What has happened to Hakhon Thai? We used to love this place (for years) and would intentionally drive 1+ hours to get good food there. Sometimes even passing through between Toronto and Ottawa we would detour to eat there. Our last visit was so bad we will never return. Watery, disgusting flavour, it is like they lost all their recipes and started with all new staff. We ordered the veggie green curry and pepper shrimp. All awful and even the coconut rice had no taste. I am pretty sad to no longer have a good thai option in my region. read more

Almost amazing! The great: Wonderfully tidy and clean environment, mindful and friendly service, quick to send food. The lacking: Thai food requires a number of key ingredients and spices to make them irresistible to eat. We had the impression they were lacking somewhat in the dishes we had. The best chicken coconut soup I have had so far showed (besides chicken of course) actual pieces of lemongrass, kaffir lime leaf, cilantro, Thai basil and chillies. The one I had here lacked those distinct flavors somewhat and tasted a bit diluted or stretched with normal broth/starch. Same holds true for the green curry. This is still a great place to eat, fresh and reasonable. Please try and concentrate the flavors more, a bit more tangy and slightly sweeter here and there and it will be perfect! read more

I was brought here by my husband for our anniversary. But sadly, I didn't enjoy our stay much. Nothing bad. Food 3/5 - I find the menu VERY lacking. The menu consists of almost the same ingredients. I had a hard time picking what I wanted with limited selections. I expected more selection if it's Thai food. It's more than peanut butter and curry. The food I ordered was sooo dry, even the rice was dry. I'm glad my husband liked his food but he said it was okay. Waited a bit long for our food too. Service and cleanliness 4/5 Ambiance 4/5 - ambiance made it feel very nice and cosy. I like the decors although the seats look a bit worn down. Barely has any cushions. I'm giving this a 3/5 because I was disappointed in the menu and the food. read more

Im in town for work from Alberta and decided to give this place a try for a healthier choice than the typical fast food meal. I ordered the spring rolls and chicken pad thai. In my experience theres always been lots of veggies included in a pad thai dish anywhere I've ever ordered it. The only sign of veggies was a sprinkle of bean sprouts throughout the dish. There was a little chicken and a dash of peanuts on top. I was surprised it was mainly noodles. The flavor was good and the veggie spring rolls were also good. I just wish I got a lot more vegetables with it. Their website shows a picture with vegetables on the side, even those were not included :-( Delivery was faster than quoted time which was nice. Came here again after a break of 4 years. I am from out of the area and I do not get into town often. The food was excellent, not sure what those other reviews tried, but once again this food was very impressive. Of all of the Thai food I have had this place is in the top 3, just above the Thai food I had in Paris. Excellent flavour, perfectly cooked. The service was good if not a little slow, but it was not so slow you got annoyed. Will be back for more of this excellent food again, hopefully soon. read more

NOT FOR VEGETARIANS/VEGANS. My friend and I were excited to try this new place but were dissatisfied with our experience. My friend has been a strict vegetarian for 9 years and we were very pleased to hear that most of the meals could be subsisted with tofu. My friend ordered the Green Curry with tofu and I ordered the Sweet and Sour Chicken and Rice. The food arrived very hot and looked pretty decent for a lunch portion, but to my friends dismay, there was large chunks of CHICKEN( I know because I tasted it) in her curry! Horrified we asked our server how this was possible and she responded with a quick whit but unbelievable answer. She didn't offer to replace her dish and instead just left the table and came back and asked us if we wanted to have our food packed up after we hadn't eaten anymore. It is safe to say that Nakhon Thai left a sour taste in our mouths. No retribution/discount was offered. Also my dish was meh. read more

Delicious, authentic Thai food in a pretty, though non-traditional restaurant, at moderately high price. Right by the city hall, this is an expansion of the Kemptville location. On Sunday and Monday nights they offer an interesting all you can eat option - ten dishes, select each or any as many times as you like. Instead of being left out in a buffet, each dish is prepared and served to order. This helps the restaurant with inventory control - if you can't finish it, you pay extra - and it helps the food be delivered at its most flavourful, fresh from the pan. It's $25 (including tax), but with other entrees priced at $17-$20 (again, with tax), it starts to seem more reasonable. It also comes with rice, which is extra with other dishes (not all of which have noodles). A night after submitting myself to the 5/3 Burger at Fifth Third Ballpark in Grand Rapids, I selflessly gave my body up to Yelp and went for the "not-buffet." I did make it through all ten options. Let's see what I can remember: * Vegetable spring rolls: Hot and crispy, with a nice sauce that's hard to pick up by dipping. Delicious with each bite, the right textures and flavours. 5 stars. * Chicken rolls/dumplings: I forget the exact name, this was chicken and a few vegetables wrapped in a soft dumpling and served with a brown sauce and peanuts. This sauce was even more delicious than the spring roll sauce, and it picked up well with each dip. The flavor was light, not salty at all - the lack of salt will be a recurring theme in this review, and I love it. 4.5 stars. * Chicken Tom Kha soup: I ordered this "very spicy," and it was perfect. Oddly, the coconut milk was poured on top instead of mixed into the broth - it looked like some other white, gluey substance that I shall not name here - but once mixed together, everything was delicious. 4 stars. * Won ton soup: The most interesting of the 10, this is not your usual salty broth, but instead an ethereal mix of Thai flavours that turn the broth into a magical potion. I complimented the chef highly on the intricate palate, and she demurred by saying that it was just a Chinese dish she tried to copy. I would much rather have this interpretation any time. 6 stars. * Chicken? Pork? pad thai: Your standard Pad Thai, with some dried hot pepper flakes on top because I asked for it that way. 4 stars. * Chicken yellow curry: The yellow curry is a bit too runny, and/or there was too much of the sauce for the solid parts of the dish. I appreciated the flavour but found myself having to drink a fair amount of the sauce at the end. The lack of salt again strikes me as I write this. 4 stars. * Cashew? beef? stir fry: Pretty sure this is the right stir fry that arrived. This has the most pungent, darkest sauce, and is more on par (saltwise) with other Asian dishes I've had, but richly satisfying nonetheless. 4.5 stars. * Vegetable fried rice: I thought this would just be ordinary fried rice, but it tasted and felt like sticky rice. Each bite stuck together, such that I could eat it with a fork instead of a spoon. The rice tasted sweet. My palate could have been destroyed by the food I'd already eaten, but I prefer to think I just had dessert as an entree. I couldn't get enough of this dish. 6 stars. * Tofu red curry: I had this after the fried rice, so again, my palate could have been destroyed, but again, the sauce tasted sweet. This time, the flavour was jarring with the rest of the dish, so it's very possible my palate WAS destroyed, in which case I feel a bit unfair judging this on what I had. There was not a lot of tofu in this dish, the sauce was again runny and plentiful, and there were too many peppers (without other vegetables for balance). I'll say 3 stars instead of 2 stars, giving the benefit of the doubt to the sweetness I tasted. * I forget the tenth dish entirely. I think I did pretty darn well remembering all four appetizers and the other entrees! What would take five stars? For these prices, offer rice with the meal if it's not a noodle-based dish. I also noticed that the takeaway menu has much different offerings than the regular menu. Standardize them - preferably by adding to the regular menu, which is rather sparse on offerings. Finally, stay with the lack of salt, but a few of the dishes may need some more complex flavourings to compensate. Consider making the curries a little less runny, or having a better sauce to solids ratio. But hey, if I were staying in Brockville or Kemptville again, I'd come back. A good option for locals seeking to eat out. read more

Disappointing. Appetizers : tempura shrimps : they looked like kentucky fried chicken pieces, dry. Shrimp spring rolls: pinky size and dry, kind the ones you buy frozen in a supermarket and they don't look like the picture on the box. Tomkha soup was good, my wife liked it. Steam rice was cooked to our satisfaction. Spicy garlic shrimp : who thought of putting sugar (a lot) in a spicy/garlic broth ?(couldn't taste either one) shrimps were cooked perfectly, what a waste! Wasn't aware there was a Thai restaurant in Brockville until I received an invite to go there for lunch with a friend. Located on the main downtown drag, Nakhon Thai has a well-maintained and decorated place right by city hall. The service was very good, both of the workers I interacted with were friendly and very helpful, with good senses of humor. One ping goes against one of them, though, When I asked whether they had any Gaeng Daeng (a type of red curry made with chicken), the waitress, who was not Thai, had a complete blank look on her face. I realized that they had no knowledge of the cuisine, which made me a little bit nervous. The food was ok, though. The shrimp rice paper wraps weren't very good compared to the many I've had in other restaurants over the years. Something about the shrimp tasted... old and a bit funky, though I suffered from no gastric side-effects at least. I enjoyed the chicken satay a bit more, although, again, the spices used on it weren't anything like what I've had in other restaurants I frequent, either. I also had the Tom Yum soup, and it wasn't very good, either. No real heat or lemongrass or even galangal to it, and found it more salty than necessary. Since no one seemed to know what Gaeng Daeng was, I opted for a green curry with chicken in it, and it was actually quite good. So, I'd recommend the curries, but not the appetizers, just to be safe. My friend ordered the pad thai and she declared it to be ok, but not the best she'd had, either. So, I'd recommend this place if you live in the area and have an immediate whim for Thai food, but I wouldn't really suggest that anyone travel any real distance to eat there, either. There are better choices in Ottawa and Cornwall that are better suited. read more

Very pleasantly surprised! Just picking out of a few restaurants in the area, we came upon this one on our first visit to the area. I believe we were waited on by one of the owners- given the biography at the end of the menu. The host/waiter was very accomodating and friendly. We chose the basic lunch for two starting with Tom Kha soup, vegetarian spring rolls, curry chicken and a chicken with cashew dish. The soup was exceptional. The flavors rich and complex. We enjoyed the other dishes as well and rice did come with it. When we were settling up, we told our host that we were just visiting the area for the first time and he gave us some great tips that we did follow up on. He recommeded that we see the new Brockville Railroad Tunnel Park - fantastic and really made our visit to Brockville worthwhile. He also suggested a short hike at the Langdon Bays which we also enjoyed greatly. read more

For the three of us, we ordered Tom kha soup, pork spring roll as an appetizer and pad Thai. The spring roll as good. That is worth the one star. The pad Thai was so sweet, the sauce was just so horrifically sweet. We did not finish it. The Tom Kha soup was made of coconut milk. It was also very very sweet. We ordered shrimp for the soup but was given chicken. No problem. We told the waiter to adjust for the $7 price difference on the bill. He took up the ladle to stir the soup in order to confirm that it was chicken (a bit offensive) and said ok he will adjust the bill. He even made another trip to our table again to confirm the change. Yet when the bill came the amount was not adjusted. We had to ask for the adjustment one more time at check out. There was also a 15% service charge already printed on the bill, for a party of 3. Very unusual experience in this small town in Canada. read more

We celebrated mothers day with my family here.We loved our experience here. The ambience was great and food was well prepared. Living in newyork and midwest usa taught me well about good thai food.The food here is basic thai flare that we expect run by a family. I will support a local family run buisness like this because we need them to make our community diverse. I do wish they include a small bowl of rice with their curries/stirfry as it is standard for any thai restaurants. I would like to offer a negative 5 stars for the service according our family's visit (6ppl)experience today during 6pm. We arrived the restaurant around 6. There is one waitress at that moment, one table just start to eat, the other 2 is finished already. The waitress just told us they don't have table for us, they do have plenty vacant table at the moment and the waitress said they won't able to give me the big table since they have reservation already. We do understand that since she work there alone. We try to find 2 small table and ask if we can put the 2 table together. She just ignore us like air. I can't believe this happen in Canada. I'm torn on this place. For the food, I'd give a 3 stars, it's good food. I've tried the vegetable spring rolls, the pork spring rolls, the chicken pad thai, and the sweet & sour chicken, all pretty delicious. But the service here is mediocre to even bad. I've gone for lunch and dinner, and the same both times. You have to wait for a waiter at the door for your table, wait close to an hour for your food, and wait (or even ask) for your take out containers and bill.
