One of my absolute FAV restaurants! The restaurant is intimate, quiet and romantic. It's in a historic building (the grist mill) in the popular and touristy downtown area. I'll start with the food: I almost ALWAYS go for the chefs special. More specifically - the fish special. I've had trout, artic char, sea bass and salmon. EVERY SINGLE TIME they have been cooked to perfection and the fish melts in your mouth. My husband loves the prime rib and gets it whenever it's being offered. Other favorites are the crab cakes, (they are a decent size and you get two) baked Brie, and the escargot . They also give you unlimited fresh baked bread! Service is always impeccable as well. The owner Lynn treats you like a friend and remembers us every time we visit. We often get Tarek and he's been at the mill for over 20 years - so he's very knowledgeable on the menu and gives wonderful recommendations and wine pairings. Passing through Brockville, Ontario to Maine. Checked the reviews of restaurants in the area and The Mill was the winner. In a former grist mill, it sits near the St. Lawrence River. Nice and quiet. Cindy was our server, she was attentive and knowledgeable. We started with drinks and the French onion soup and caprese salad. My husband truly enjoyed the soup, piping hot and delicious. The caprese salad was okay. Invest in the good buffalo mozzarella or at least the larger sliced cheese. A tad over dressed. I had the sole with potatoes and veggies. It was to come with a lemon beurre blanc sauce that didn't seem to be very lemon forward. Hubby had the rigatoni calabrese, very good. The star of the meal was the chocolate cheesecake. Decadent, light for a cheesecake, wonderful crust. Overall a pleasant meal. read more

Wow. Honestly, this was the best meals we've had north of the border. We both had the filet and scallops special..... Wow!!!! We ate down stairs in the steak house which felt like 1850. Our server was tremendous. Try the creme brulle. read more

Went out for a special birthday dinner with guests. My guests all had the prime rib special and I had the chicken parmigiana with side spaghetti (fancier Italian name on the menu). There were 2 orders for medium prime rib and one for rare. All were served as ordered. My parmigiana was un-remarkable and somewhat over sauced. Presentation was sub par. Freshly grated Parmesan and ground pepper was offered. I don't think the Parmesan was really Parmesan, certainly not a Reggiano. Cocktails served beforehand and were made with common bar mix, nothing special. All in all an ok meal, with friendly and attentive service. Probably the best the area has to offer but rated against similar restaurants in Toronto and Ottawa would pale in comparison. read more

My mother is one tough customer and she LOVES this place. The food is great, and they treat her like such a queen when she comes. The restaurant is charming and has one of the best-walk-ups (you get to go over a small little cliff right over a stream). Came here for my aunts birthday today. I had the beef tenderloin In a pepercorn sauce a beautiful thing. My aunt and veal dish that was flavorful and delicate. What an amazing dinner we had here at The Mill. We sat in a cozy room overlooking the stream. The waiter informed us of the specials which all sounded amazing. We had the linguine with fresh, tastefully season scallops and fresh veggies cooked perfectly with a light sauce of lemon, olive oil and garlic. Our other meal was an aged steak that was perfectly cooked,covered with yummy onion straws, accompanied with roasted potatoes and fresh veggies. Last evening we threw a surprise 25th anniversary dinner for our son and his wife. We worked with manager Lynn for a few weeks ahead to set this up. She couldn't have been more professional or gracious. She was in and out all evening, checking on things but never intrusive. Any requests or problems were handled quickly and efficiently. Our wait staff was super. We were a group of around 22 - kids and adults but all were taken care of. The food from beginning to end was great. Something for everyone from appetizers to salads to mains. Thanks to all concerned for making the event a success. The Mill is a beautiful old building with a ton of history and scenic location. Good food. Have eaten here whenever I'm in town for dinner and the food is always good. It's their service that is outstanding. A couple years ago I called my 80+ mother-in-law and she said she was stuck in her condo due to heavy snow and wishing she could have some French onion soup. I called The Mill if they would do take-out and deliver. Not only did the owner take her the soup in the middle of a snow storm, but someone came back the next day to pick up the porcelain dish as the restaurant had insisted that the soup wouldn't be right in a disposable container. You've got to bake the bowl of soup to melt the cheese topping. Now that's great service and pride in their food! read more

Very nice atmosphere and location, and the service was good. Nice historic building with quite stylish decor with a strong black-and-white checkered motif against warm brown walls (look for the large canvas of three Dalmations). We had a table for eight, and ordered a variety of items and so got a good cross section of the menu. Food was good, if a bit conventional, but for a little town and for the cost it was exceptional. Recent visit to Brockville and positive reviews influenced our decision to choose The Mill for Lunch. We were greeted and seated right away by a very nice hostess and our friendly and efficient server attended to us right away. Water was served and our orders taken. My first selection was for the Sweet Potato soup which arrived without delay - it was tasty but only lukewarm and not hot as soup should be. I was hungry so ate it as it was, but mentioned the temperature to our server later on. The main meal was a Roast Beef panini with dipping sauce. The sandwich was delicious and the meat thin and tender; however the dipping sauce was more like jello than au jus and also was not hot at all. My glass of house wine was very good and the overall meal was o.k. There was a rowdy family group in the room we were in and if our hostess had mentioned this to us when we arrived, we probably would have selected another area of the restaurant. Its the little touches that make a restaurant stand out. Unfortunately The Mill didn't do this for me. The table coverings were tacky fake leather-like which didn't compliment the atmosphere of a heritage building. If travelling back to Brockville, I will most likely choose another dining experience because this one was disappointing. read more

Almost a disaster. I called ahead to ask what time they are open until. Person told me order needs to be into kitchen by 8:30. Drove into town. Checked into hotel. Love to check out local restaurants. Arrived at 8:10 to be told by a couple people in entrance that they are closed. I admit to being a little rude that I was told 8:30 and for a small town restaurant that's not the way to attract business. As I left and got to my vehicle. A man came running out of the restaurant and begged me to come back. That there was a misunderstanding. I have never been chased to my car like that so I obliged and went back in. Tarik the man who chased me also served me and literally fell all over me to make sure my experience was good. Awesome food, superb wine, great service. Even The lady who I had the first run in with came to me and we apologized to each other. Disaster avoided. Hardly first world issues. My husband and I were treated to dinner here at the end of Nov by my in-laws for our 6 mos wedding anniversary. We started off with appetizers. I got a sweet potatoes soup, my husband a Caprese salad, and my in-laws each a regular salad. The three of them tried different pasta dishes for their entrees and I had a daily special of blackened red snapper platter. For dessert we all had a different one. Everything was awesome. The waitress was very attentive, and along with the owner, helped to serve our table. They brought out salt & pepper grinders & cheese shredders right to our table even! Delicious, very fresh Italian food .. The spaghetti , roast beef , steak , stuffed mushrooms, and all of the other dishes I've tried there are (accompanied by anything you like including fresh Asian, Ceaser or House salad) all to die for . But their made in house daily cheesecake really takes the cake . A different flavour everyday , some classics, some just deadly to be alone with the whole cake, and some intriguing and creative but still yummy . I'd like to add again that they make it fresh in house everyday and you can tell . Light and fluffy and creamy , personal favourites are mint, turtle, cherry , and fudge .
