This quaint and stylish restaurant gives off the most welcoming vibe. I went for a nice quiet dinner with a close friend of mine and we absolutely loved it. They have amazing staff that gives the proper amount of check ins. Everyone there wants to ensure you are satisfied and well taken care of. I choose to get the Amish braised chicken with a $1 upgrade charge of coconut rice. My friend got the steak and curry dish. It was so amazing. Nice portions for the pricing they charged. And they wrapped your food up for you! We decided to get the mango sticky rice dessert and boy.... was it NOT a disappointment. The presentation was amazing and the taste came to follow. Incredible restaurant! I was on a trip to Evanston with my mom (we live in Boston). We stumbled upon this place the first night we were there. The food was delicious and the staff was excellent. We ended up going back the next night! Everyone was so warm and welcoming. We loved the atmosphere, especially on the second night when they had live music playing! We loved all of the food - - and the chicken lettuce wraps were our top pick! The cocktails are fun and unique. My favorite restaurant in downtown Evanston. Such a treat every time we eat here. I think the key is that food is less salty than most places which gives room to all the other wonderful flavors, and the combination of flavors in each dish is just so good! We went for lunch on a Saturday. Service was great and attentive, but the food was just okay. Not sure why it's so highly rated here. The watermelon appetizer didn't click for us. Though after my my dining companion got the seafood soup she said it paired well all of a sudden lol. Seafood soup was also not worth the price point. It also had a slightly sweet broth. Companion commented that the calamari was chewy. I got the chicken and rice dish - this was decent. I like the cute bottle the sauce comes in. The presentation of the dish and chicken itself differed from what I saw in Yelp pictures though. Not sure if this dish is different at the dinner hour or not. I got the house lemonade soda with violet and vodka. I misunderstood the menu and thought with vodka meant it would be $6 instead of $4. But it meant +$6 to the $4 soda. So $10. Wow! I come to Evanston once a year on biz. Much went wrong with my travel today and as a result I walked 0.1 miles from my hotel in 5 degree temperatures to NaKorn guided by excellent reviews and proximity. Inviting interior...cool vibe and music. Interesting decor. When I got the menu I was confused. Every Thai restaurant I'd ever visited (100+ all over US and Europe) had similar menus. I could always get Pad See Ew, Pad Kee Mao or a curry. There was nothing familiar on the menu. Every item was something I hadn't seen before. I was intrigued. Really creative and sophisticated Thai cuisine... kinda bold outside of a big city. I settled in for dinner. Better beer choices than most Thai places. Ordered a delicious Gatecrasher IPA. A bold beer to accompany a potentially bold meal. Started with Coriander Crispy Shredded Beef. Sweet savory crisps of beef over chewy sticky rice. A delicious glaze was drizzled on the plate. The interplay of flavors and textures was perfection. Some sprigs of (maybe) sprouted cilantro. I scraped every bit of delicious sustenance from the plate. Next, my entree was Pan Seared Sea Scallops. These were fiery hot and expertly prepared! Each of 4 scallops was served on a sliver of Chinese eggplant. Brussels sprout purée parenthetically framed the scallops. Beautiful red chilis adorned the scallops. Several crispy Thai basil leaves lay between the scallops. Perfection again! My beer was drained...rather than another I HAD to try dessert at NaKorn! Dessert was chewy dumplings, fruit and crisp slivers of something "merenguey" in a spicy-sweet ginger sauce. A delicate palette here and again the interplay of chewy and crisp. Excellent. Service was excellent and staff and owner always wanted to know what I thought of each course. What a terrific place! Passed by here more than a few times and so sorry er did not experience the food here sooner! Our waiter Nem was quite helpful with menu and explaining the menu. He was quite knowledgeable of the dishes and how they were prepared. Eddie was very attentive and made sure we were well taken care of! We started with the Meatballs of Chicken. They were moist and flavorful but the chili sauce that accompanied them was very flavorful and has just the right amount of spice! They were served with lettuce that you wrapped them in and then drizzled with the sauce. I had the Grilled Pork Chop, it was nicely prepared but the sauce made it even better. It complimented the chop perfectly. My partner enjoyed the Kabocha-Kale Chicken Roulade with Thai chili curry sauce which was amazing. The curry was very tasty and went well with the dish. For dessert we had the mango sticky rice with mango sorbet! It really made the meal complete! This is the place that we will definitely come back to more than a few times. I never ever eat chicken but then out of curiosity I tried my boyfriend's curry chicken dish about a year ago. OMG. Now I'm an addict. I'd like to move beyond it, but I can't. Upscale Thai situated in the heart of Evanston. Their version of Thai food is redefined in creative and unique celebration. The restaurant is ritzy and modern. During the cold season they keep the heat pumping, protected by double-pane glass, the atmosphere of the dining area is warm and comforting throughout the meal. Chicago has a plethora of Thai spots to keep lovers on a Thai high. Most are accustomed to the low costs associated with decent Thai food, much of which is mostly alike. There is a cost difference with eating sensationally crafted Thai food, it's more but it is good. Portion sizes aren't large but will do your hunger justice if ordered with the right appetizer. The menu will not look familiar. They're pushing boundaries with exciting ingredient compositions. Two of us dined the other afternoon, a weekday luncheon. We decided early on to share. Our orders were based off of my recon of their food porn found online. We ordered chicken two ways. Meatballs and grilled with rice. Also ordered the (highly recommended) Jumbo Lump Blue Crab Meat entree with an extra rice on the side. The table setting is cute. There are vessels specific to their condiment, whether it be S&S sauce, chili sauce, etc. I ordered coffee and a press was brought out for one. (I'm tempted now to buy a coffee press for one, it's sitting in a "Do I really need this" list on Amazon). Going into it.. we weren't sure. The menu wasn't grabbing attention and we needed prodding by our waiter. But once tasty plates got set down and we started experimenting with food, it was good stuff. Don't just use your utensils. Pick up the meatballs, wrap them in the supplied lettuce and doctor it up with sauce. Their choices in plates, plating techniques, place settings is all so attractive I bet most folks would want to snap a few shots or record video. I found myself doing this for a couple reasons. 1 Because I often share food porn photos online. 2 Because I'm in this home updating mode, so I'm on the lookout for unique plating or flatware ideas. I just moved to Evanston and I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised by all the ethnic food options! I was craving some Thai food, as usual, and decided to try out NaKorn. Diners - be aware that this place kind of shares a front door with La Macchina (Italian place) - if you turn left upon walking in, you might find yourself with a pizza pasta menu questioning whether you're crazy or maybe you never really knew what Thai food was at all... Jumbo Lump Blue Crabmeat - super tasty, lots of flavor. This is a curry noodle dish, so it's crab meat and rice noodles sitting in a slightly-spicy coconut curry broth. The flavor of the curry really steps into everything. Also excellent for leftovers because the flavor is even more strong the next day! Kabocha-Kale Chicken Roulade - nope, would not recommend. Maybe if want the illusion of health, since the chicken is stuffed with kale, but Thai food and diet don't really go together. This was such a weird dish; the chicken was pretty bland, and the curry sauce that comes with it doesn't complement or help. Also, chicken kale roulade at a Thai place? Maybe they accidentally swapped a dish with La Macchina next door. There's a buzz around town...NaKorn is here to enhance the true traditional Thai dining experience!! If it is Pad Thai or Lard Nar, you're looking for, you will not find it here. Instead of spring rolls you'll want to try various appetizers that are offered like the Taro Chicken. I tried the beef brisket that I initially thought was too dry, but actually liken it to beef jerky and rice balls with very good flavor. I really like their watermelon appetizer with cured dried salmon so I hope it returns next summer. The Kale & Tofu was out of this world with the coconut curry cream sauce and the Amish Chicken was super super tender with the spicy amarind sauce as a perfect accompaniment. I normally don't like white meat of chicken but this was perfectly cooked. Both of these dishes I've tried before so I was a little peeved the waiter did not recommend the braised pork special they had written on the board outside. I do like that the food is consistent though so no harm done. (I specifically asked if there were any specials because I didn't have time to look outside and he mentioned that everything is special. Next time I'll look for myself.) I was too full to try dessert but I did love the mango and sweet rice the last time I was here. read more

Come here on a Friday night. The restaurant is fully packed. I would recommend making a reservation beforehand, or else you may wait for about 30 minutes just like us lol. We have the green (special of the day) and the Pan Roasted White Fish Filet. Food presentation is amazing. They look beautiful as pictures on the plates. Everything tastes exactly as how I imagine. The fish has a crispy skin and is cooked to perfection. And the sauce goes perfectly with the fish. I wouldn't change anything about the dish. The green salad has an interesting combination. The dressing has the right amount of Thai twist. I have a high spicy resistance level. And I'm pleasantly surprised to find the Thai chili hidden in the dish. A procurement of traditional childhood home cooked and street style Thai food, something new and enticing as many thai restaurants go the traditional route many are exposed to. I got a chance to try this place with my best friend for a Yelp event, and won a gift card! So happy to revisit and try more items on the menu. They've got quite a good list of alcohol! This is the kind of place where it's a good idea to try everything. Many items on their menus are seasonal! My first intro to NaKorn was through a Yelp event, and I came back with a friend a couple of weeks after to redeem a gift card. It's elevated Thai food. Although the preparation and presentation aren't common in Thai cuisine, the flavors are still pretty authentic and traditional. So far, we've tried Meatballs of Chicken (newer item - must try), Taro Chicken (my ultimate fave... PLEASE get this if you can. It's crunchy on the outside and super tender on the inside. It's seriously addicting. My mouth is watering as I'm typing this), Grilled Amish Chicken (served in these adorable old school food containers and the flavors were great, but I thought the portion was too small for the price), Coriander Crispy Shredded Beef Brisket, Sautéed White Prawns in Coconut Cream Curry Sauce (also verrry good - I'm a sucker for anything cooked in coconut cream), Vegetarian Scallop (pretty tasty), and the Kale and Tofu (who knew kale and tofu could be this enjoyable?!?). Sam and Mina, the owners, were both so sweet and friendly. They both grew up in Thailand and this is their labor of love. They truly care about serving top-notch Thai cuisine and creating a memorable experience for their customers. You'll see it in the way they decorated the restaurant, the ambiance, and also the thought they put into each and every dish. While on a work trip here in Evanston, a colleague and my self decided to try NaKorn because 1. It has good reviews 2. It was close the hotel and freezing outside 3. We both love Thai. I am so glad we did. The service was some of the best I've had in years. Alert and attentive without being overbearing. The food was delicious. I got the $30 pre fix that came with the popcorn chicken, chicken curry, and a dessert. I LOVED the popcorn chicken so much I ordered another full plate! So good! The Thai chicken was hot, moist, and full of flavor. For dessert we both had ginger broth dumplings. Came with a poached plum I believe and a small merengue in a ginger broth. Extremely unique and inventive, but quite a different texture, so if you have an issue with textures...be careful. All in all the atmosphere, service, and food were all on par and exceeded my expectations. read more

I appreciate this concept of elevated Thai food; this is unique in my experience. I love a good cheap pad thai, but it's great to see more craft and elegance using the same familiar flavors. I wish that we had a place like this anywhere near Park Ridge. If I were the kind of person who photographs my food, the beet salad would have been a fine subject. Atop a scattering of greens, they constructed a three-tiered tower, with thin beet slices as the floors and halved heirloom grape tomatoes as the pillars. Crowning everything was a ring of cucumber slices. Four quail egg halves stood by in admiration. I hated to dismantle the thing, but happily it tasted as good as it looked--fresh, bright, and lively. The frequent flare of heat kept me eating slowly, which allowed me to enjoy it more. The other dishes--southern-style noodles, brussels sprouts, and braised chicken with rice noodles--were simple but good, maybe slightly bland by comparison to the salad. My best Thai food experience. I ordered the coconut prawn curry and it was delicately sweet and the fresh prawns really come thru. The rice was also a star itself. Perfectly steamed, not sticky, not dry, very aromatic. I've had a lot of rice in my life and it's def up there on the list. The portion wasn't too large, but just enough to leave you satisfied. My friend had the chicken noodle and said it was the best noodles he's ever had. Overall, all the food was very balanced, a key to proper Thai cuisine imo. I'm always hesitant about fusion food but this place does it well. Unlike some of reviewers, we didn't wait too long for our food but we did have to wait a little for our server. Wasn't a long wait but made me wonder if they should hire more people to work the tables. The taro chicken was crispy and the peanut sauce was pretty good. The taro itself? Could be more fragrant. Honestly with or without the taro, I would have been happy. We also had the New York strip steak with green curry. The curry had basil oil and chilli oil and it's overall presentation was really pretty. The steak was well cooked at medium rare, the curry was delightful and I wished for more of it. The spices are right and it's fairly spicy so be warned. I kind of miss having some hearty potato in it. As for rice, the coconut rice was really nice and fragrant. The jasmine rice though leaves much to be said. It was clumpy but at least it was really jasmine rice. Too much water was used to cook the rice clearly. To me, bad rice is a disaster for a Thai restaurant and why I would take a star off. I didn't want dessert but the selection was kinda small and 2 out of 3 items were out. Our server was really nice and kept checking on us so no complains about service here. The Thai ice tea was good without the milk overpowering everything which is the standard practice in many places. It comes with a big price tag though so be warned. Would I come back again? Maybe but it's definitely not a place to come for a quick takeout but it's a nice place for a good dinner. The decor is interesting but not corny. The food cooked well and flavoured well. Alas the clumpy jasmine rice was a let down. Sorry but I care about my rice! Also be warned, your wallet will hurt after this. This restaurant has absolutely stunning decor! The decor was designed and put together by the restaurant owners, including a mural that portrays the hustle & bustle of Bangkok!! The decor has bird cages to medicine cabinets that transports you to the retro street stalls in Thailand, but in contemporary modern fashion, very cool!! Talk about putting your sweat, tears, heart and soul into a restaurant! Better yet, the same heart and energy is also put into the food! These were authentic Thai food, but not just the pad thais (which they do not have btw) you find in most Thai restaurants. The food here are home and street foods that are reminiscent of what Thai's ate back home, the authentic Thai food instead of the tourist or oversea's version. The taste, aroma, flagrance, presentation of the food were wonderful! Each dish having their unique character and explosion of flavors that left us drooling after each bite. In particular, we love the Coconut Cream Curry Sauce Sauteed White Prawns and Kale & Tofu with coconut tamarind curry sauce. Their curry were so delicious that we kept refilling our rice to enjoy with the curry. The Grilled Amish Raised Chicken was also executed to perfection, being succulent and matched with unique flavors, spicy tamarind sauce. They create Thai dishes with local and seasonal ingredients, which ends up with fried tofu paired with red beets on the winter menu. You can go there all year long and experience new dishes. This is one of our favorite places to eat in Evanston. The ambience is quant and comfortable, while the food is top notch. The chicken curry is to die for with enough sauce for multiple bowls of rice (ask for extra!). The whole Branzino has been deboned and is very tasty. If I can give 3.5 I would, because this place is better than a 3 but not a 4 in my opinion. I came with high expectations because of all the nice yelp review. Really liked the look of the restaurant, the staff were very nice and welcoming. It's our first time here so we got all the popular dishes, the pop corn chicken, coconut curry chicken and jumbo blue crab with rice noodles and a Bangkok mule. The pop corn chicken had too much batter not a lot of meat, but the flavor is good. I loved the coconut curry, it was full of flavor, too bad that was my fiancé's dish. The jumbo blue crab had a very pretty presentation, but I wish there was more curry sauce, because by the time I mix everything up, I was running out of sauce. We also ordered a dessert which was just ok. The drinks were good, nothing outstanding. Overall had a pretty good experience, would come back and try other items on the menu. read more

I am actually a little torn about writing this because on one hand this place is so great that I want everyone to know about it, but on the other hand I also don't want so many people to know about it that it becomes so busy that I can't get in. Today though, this fantastic hidden gem does not have a long wait for a table. Don't dally though, because as word spreads about the very unique and delicious food they're serving, that's likely to change. I say this because everything I've eaten at NaKorn is flavorful, distinctive and beautiful presented. As others have said this is not your typical Thai place. You're not going to find your usual Pad Thai or Lad Nar. What you'll find instead are dishes with lots of unique and delightful flavors that will wake up your palate. We were actually on our way to a different restaurant, but we were fascinated by the cozy atmosphere and unique light fixtures so we went in to check out the menu. Terrific array of Thai urban food. You have to come here!!! We had their whole crispy branzino with a kale salad with a lime gastrique. And the arctic char with ginger, fennel, pomegranates and a phenomenal tamarind-coconut reduction was phenomenal. The bites to start the meal were so unique - tapioca crackers with a dipping sauce of minced chicken, shrimp, peanuts. Exquisite. I would be confident saying that Nakorn is the best restaurant in Evanston, and without a doubt in the top 5. Fantastic food and warm service for a very reasonable price. This is not a place to go for a quick meal as the dishes take time and care to prepare, but if you have the time it's completely worth it. I especially recommend Khun Sompit's big fish, which is a whole branzino so expertly cooked that even the bones and tail are crispy and delicious. It's the only whole cooked fish I've ever eaten in its entirety -- that's how good it is. The entire menu is original and shows an imaginative and passionate mind in the kitchen. I've been around the world and lived for years in New York City, and Nakorn would still make my top 10 list of restaurants after all of that. Thank you to the owners and chef for what you do! Delighted by this Thai restaurant! It certainly exceeded our expectations. The food was marvelous. We had the Chilean sea bass (best dish served tonight), the sirloin and the ribs.
