Egg soufflé was cool. The food was good. No complaints there. The waiter told us we have to order two meat dishes to do bbq unless you purchase at least two meat dishes for kbbq which is around 45-50s each dish. It was lunch time and I didn't expect to spend that much on it or eat that much for two ppl. So we decided to just order dishes instead and save kbbq for another day for dinner. We ordered glass noodles, egg soufflé and the seafood pancake. Noodles and pancakes dishes were about $17-18 and the egg soufflé was $6-7. Waiter came over and told us the sides don't come with the shareable dishes we ordered unless we get kbbq and order two meats . I didn't care for the sides nor did I expect to have the sides at that point because we ordered more than enough for two people. At this point I felt like I wanted to leave and goto Koreana in Cambridge instead. It was the interaction that led to an underwhelming experience. Maybe I should adjust my expectation and excitement for this new place. First impression was not the best : This left me in disbelief when the staff asked me to step outside to wait until our table is ready. He said they are setting up the table and asked us to step out . I looked at him and said "why ? " He said it was restaurant policy . It was in the mid 80sF and hot out. The place was empty with one table with customers . I would understand if it was packed and they need space to walk etc . Anyways we stepped outside, then he called us back in after 3mins or so. My critique for the restaurant: staffs should explain early on in the beginning on how it works . Especially since this is a new restaurant. Explain to customers for example: there is shareable, and kbbq.Sides and rice are provided if you decide to have kbbq which means you will need to pick at least two meat dishes . Here is the call button if you need assistance .... This would have prevented disappointment from customers .Everything tastes good. I loved the egg. During lunch time on a Sunday , it was quite empty and I can see why. For the cost and the minimum purchase for two meat dishes or a combo , you are looking to spend $120 + for two people just for lunch if you decide to do korean bbq. So this is definitely higher end kbbq. It make sense for dinner but for lunch I probably would have preferred elsewhere unless they make changes to lunch options. read more

Naksan BBQ (otherwise known as Jongro, the famous NYC Korean BBQ spot) just opened up in the old Ittoku Izakaya location. The overall presentation of the food, the service, and the ambiance was spot on. The waiters are super helpful and cook the meat for you. They don't even allow you to pour water yourself. It has a high-class vibe. However, the food portion was quite small for a $160 large BBQ plate. I expected more meat. The kimchi pancake was oily and didn't have any crunch to it. Also I found some dirt and a bug in my lettuce, but the staff took care of that immediately and were apologetic. Super nice. The plus side of things: a free egg souffle (steamed egg) was included with the BBQ plate, as well as a kimchi stew. The raw beef tartare was PHENOMENAL. Hands-down the best dish they served. It was strips of lean beef soaked in sesame oil and garnished with slices of Asian pear. Our meal came out to $250. It was quite pricey for the amount of food we received. Loved the ambiance of the place and the staff - everyone was really friendly and accommodating :) The beer was very affordable ! $5 for different Asian beers they had available For the banchan - my favorite dish the eggplant :) We ordered the small beef combo (4 different meats: boneless short rib, hanger steak, marinated cubed short rib & thinly sliced brisket) which came with an egg soufflé and kimchi soup for $119. I would say the quality matches the price. The experience itself is special, interesting, pampering and worth it. It's not inexpensive but, the experience, food and care is worth the cost. So excited when Naksan finally opened. My daughter and I ordered the marinated Korean traditional beef short rib and the premium pork belly. We were welcomed with a complimentary tea with berries. The vent over the charcoal grill was powerful and we didn't smell too much of any smoke after. Jason, Darryl and Moji were our attentive servers. They cooked the meat, and all we had to do was stuff our faces full of banchan and the meat. The short ribs were phenomenal and perfectly grilled by Moji. The belly was so good and Darryl did an awesome job with that. Jason suggested also grilling the kimchi which added another dimension to the meal. They didn't hover, but Jason and Darryl kept an eye on the table and refilled our side dishes and water when they thought we were getting low. All the banchan were so tasty and they were made in-house. We had cucumbers, eggplant, celery, seaweed, fish cakes, kimchi, green onions, and lettuce to wrap everything with. I ate so much of everything but my favorite was the eggplant and the cucumber. We had a very satisfying meal. Meat grilled over charcoal is definitely elevated in flavor. If I may make a suggestion, a combo beef and pork platter would be nice. I was interested in both the beef combo with different cuts of beef, and the pork with assorted types, but felt it would be too much to order one of each. Relatively new Korean BBQ spot in Allston. In my opinion, it's the best one in the surrounding area with quality meats, side dishes, stews and more. I was very impressed with the food and everything was very delicious. The servers who cook and serve the meat could use some practice but I'm sure it's a learning curve from newly opening. I personally think too many servers were rotating to our grill and flipping the meats right when another person would come and flip it so they were just cooking the same side again and again. I also think it's a nice gesture to put the cooked meats on our personal plates but I would prefer to just pick and choose the quantity of food I want to eat instead of splitting it evenly. I also think they waited a bit too long to start grilling and because it's on charcoal instead of regular electric or gas, I definitely think they could have avoided grilling on the the ash of the white coals. This is a type of Korean BBQ spot I would expect to see in NYC, LA, and in Korea. Very trendy, hip, and a seemingly fun spot to hang late night with your friends. Unfortunately, I thought it was incredibly overpriced for average quality Korean BBQ food. Also, it's criminal that they don't have traditional kimchi or garlic anywhere. What's a Korean BBQ without regular kimchi and garlic? Furthermore, the service when we went around 630pm on a Friday evening was inconsistent. Multiple servers running around confused. Perhaps they were understaffed that evening, but If I go to a Korean BBQ, I prefer to do the cooking myself. I don't need anyone to cook for me, if they do they do it as a way to assist from time to time, it's not something you expect. I had high hopes, but perhaps that lead me down. This is the best Korean bbq place in Boston, with real charcoals! As a Korean, I have been waiting for a place like this to open in Boston for years. :) When we found this place, we went there three times in two weeks with a bunch of friends. We felt like we were in Korea. Bbq was delicious, japchae and cold noodle were great. We also enjoyed soybean soup a lot - it may have been beef broth based instead of fish broth (I like both but my husband doesn't eat seafood much so he loved it), very tasty. I came here during soft opening. This place left me with an unforgettable impression. After that, I have been busy at work and haven't come back for 1 month. During this 1 month, I heard many negative reviews/comments. I almost can't believe them, so I decided to try this place during its grand opening. During the grand opening, I ordered double prime beef with bone. The beef quality was so decent that the patterns on the beef are clearly displayed. In addition, the beef was tender and juicy. There's a bone with meat and tendon, you can chew right on it if you are as brazen as I am. As for the service, the server constantly changed grill and added side dishes for me. He even grilled the meat one piece by one piece and served it into my plate. I don't know what else he could do to make the service better. Maybe feed the food right into my mouth? Although I don't mind, putting the meat into my mouth may sound weird to him. There are many signature Korean sojus including one of my favorite drinks - Seoul Night. The only thing people might complain about might be the price. I agree it's pricy. However, with such food quality and service, I am willing to spend. Keep it up. TL,DR: tasty food, good services. Uncomfortable seating and environment. Not cheap. Went to the Commonwealth avenue location. I was not starving but came here with friends. The decor is nice and modern. We did a small combo for 2 people and a bunch of other things. None of us are big eaters, so the portion was good enough for us. The combination was mostly protein; good if you're on a keto diet. They cook your meal on the grill and generally service is attentive. I don't think it's super expensive but it is not cheap. Coming here on a summer night was a bad idea. I didn't feel any air conditioning. With all the charcoal grills on, we felt like we were eating in a sauna. The vents do a great job, not smokey at all but it was just too hot. We didn't get seated at the booths. We sat at one of the round tables. The chairs do not have much of a back and the pleather cushions didn't help. These seats are not comfortable. The heat from the grill and lack of air conditioning really glued my exposed skin to the pleather seats. When we tried to ask about the menu or experience; we couldn't hear clearly. We tried asking several members of the service team but could not hear over the music. So the overall experience was just too uncomfortable. read more

As a Korean girlie living in Boston and missing the motherland food, I think that this place has given me a close authentic experience! The side dishes provided were solid (steamed egg, stew, kimchi,etc) and a lot of other places make you pay for that but this comes with the food. I will say that it is definitely pricey and can easily be $100 total but I would consider it a good splurge for the quality of food and experience! The staff there were very fast, efficient, and also wear old school uniforms used in Korea which is cute. The atmosphere is nice and feels like drinking places in Korea. Note that it is not the most tender I've had of the same cut, but it was still quite tender and delicious. 4/5 Premium Pork belly - As it was another recommendation, we tried the premium pork belly. This was delicious and despite marinated short rib being both my and my company's favorite cut of meat, the pork belly outclassed the short rib. It was incredibly crispy and just about as tender as I've seen pork belly get. The worker who cooked our food (Taeyeon iirc) cooked it splendidly. 5/5 Egg Soufflé - I did not have this dish, but I am told it was delicious. 4.5/5 Side dishes - These are the second best side dishes I have had. The best that I've had in boston. The variety of dishes was excellent and I believe there were free refills. Despite meat being high cost, eating a lot of side dishes will probably earn your money's worth at Naksan. 4/5 Service - Our original server was very energetic and seemed very enthusiastic to be there. Lovely to see that. The waitress who cooked our food, as previously mentioned, was very professional. Their table arrangement is such that there is a button customers can press to alert servers to pressing needs. I like this system because it leaves no room for complaint! The table manager at the front (perhaps the owner?) was friendly and attentive to our needs. If it is the owner, he has respectably high standards. I recall one instance of our cook changing the grill and leaving the vent elevated above where it normally rests on the grill (so that she could cook the meat) and the table manager quickly noticed, lowered the vent to suck up all of the smoke, then went back to his job. Finally a KBBQ place in Boston! It's conveniently located on the B line right by the Allston St stop. We ordered the small beef combo for the two of us ($120). Every combo comes with a fluffy egg soufflé and your choice of stew (kimchi or soybean). They give tons of banchan as well! All of the staff were super nice, provided us with menu recommendations, and helped us cook all of our meat. This place is definitely on the pricier side but well worth it - everything was insanely good and you could tell the meat was high quality! Will definitely be returning for more. read more

Went here for my birthday yesterday. Huge fail. We ordered the Large Beef Combo. Barely any meat and just random mushroom and veggies on the plate. This is all we ordered and our total bill was 225$ including tip. Meat was lackluster, literally the same as any AYCE kbbq, I was expecting amazing quality given the price. Portions are tiny. My girlfriend and I were starving still after. The service was laughable. If you ever hate someone, take them here. You cannot really have a conversation as the exhaust pipe blocks the view of person in front of you. Also the hostess hovered over our table for 80% of the evening so it was one of the most awkward dinners I have ever had. All in all, skip this place. So I balled out at dinner tonight. Bad day at work, and about to eat my stress away. As soon as I walked in, the ambience and staff welcomed me and promised a dinner which proved to be extraordinary I solo-ordered the small Pork Combo and a bottle of soju. $150 with tax/tip is over my per diem allotment, but I didn't see many options on the menu and I was hungry as cheese, so I trusted the host and ordered his recommendation Holy cow. As soon as I sent back my order, my table was transformed with diverse, unlimited sides (9) including a fancy omelette and a heaping tray of enticing meat options (4 meats). Soon after a wonderful attendant explained the table before cooking my dinner to perfection and providing great conversation as I explored the feast laid out before me I'm so full, probably a meal for 3, but this was one of the best dinners I've ever had. I feel like I experienced something special and I can't wait to go back PS - Special fans above each table vacuum up the smell, and each chair has a safe compartment for coats, etc. If you're going out afterwards, don't worry about smelling like meat The space is awesome with good music. I wanted to cook with my family and feel the connection but instead we had someone in the middle cooking for us. We just stay quiet and not felt comfortable talking. We started with yukhoe which I generally enjoy, but it did feel like the meat was lacking and the asian pear volume was space occupying. Nearly no wait on a Friday night for 2, the person checking us in/manager even informed us we could park in permit parking, and charcoal grills were a pleasant surprise! Our server Peter was also very helpful with recommendations and he cooked the meat just the way we liked. The staff and customer service there were great! I was excited to see this kbbq place open up in Brighton since the long-gone Ittoku moved to Porter Square. They only take reservations for 5 people or more, or after 9 pm, so we (a party of 4) came around dinnertime on a Friday night. It took a few minutes for them to set up, but we were seated in a booth area. The stool seats have storage for your bags underneath them which is resourceful. We scanned the QR code to look at the menu and the waiter just said to press the button when we are ready to order. We were brought some pink tea drink, it was super sweet, but not sure what it was called. We decided to order a small pork and small beef combo and some glass noodles. The combos come with an egg souffle and a bowl of kimchi/soybean soup. We rang the bell and the waiter came to take our order. Our waiter started bringing out some of the side dishes and turning the heat on for the grill. Our waiter didn't inform us that we could get free refills on our side dishes, so you should ask for refills on the ones that you like. Since the waiter cooks your food, you are basically eating at the pace that they cook at, which was a few pieces of meat for each round of cooking. The quality of meat is good, but for the price and quantity, I don't like I would come back. The egg soufflé was really pretty and quite bouncy in texture. The kimchi soup does have a small spicy kick to it, but not unbearable if you like to eat spicy things. The glass noodles were good, but nothing amazing.
