I wasn't feeling homesick during the Chinese New Year, but eating such authentic Cantonese cuisine almost made me cry... Flavored Chicken雲香雞: Originating from the "Yunxiang Lou雲香樓" restaurant in Guangzhou, this is an old-style Cantonese dish. I haven't tried the original one myself, so I can't comment on whether it's authentic, but it tasted similar to what's known as "salted chicken鹹雞" in Guangdong. The chicken itself was already salty enough, so the ginger and scallion sauce was a delightful addition to the rice - as all Cantonese know. It seems to be made with young hens; the skin was fragrant, moist but not oily, and the meat was tender and smooth, with a strong original aroma of chicken雞味. Even the chicken breast wasn't dry at all. The simple salt-baking鹽焗 style and peanut oil seasoning perfectly brought out the chicken's freshness and aroma. It was even delicious after being reheated the next day. It would have been even better if the chicken skin was crispy, but it's hard to ask for more in the US. Vegetables with Garlic蒜蓉菜遠: I haven't had such flavorful stir-fried Choy Sum菜心 (Chinese Flowering Cabbage) in a long time. I even missed the Cantonese greens more than the chicken, so I ate the whole plate by myself. Stir-fried greens need a generous amount of oil to be truly fragrant. Visiting Boston from L.A. for first time, was craving Cantonese comfort food after too many lobsters in Boston and Maine (Maine lobsters are better.) It was 10:30pm so my options were limited, decided to give Jade Garden a try. Ordered a wonton noodle soup. Now, I did not expect it to be as good or authentic as Sam Woo in Alhambra CA or Mike's in Seattle Chinatown. But what was served was a complete travesty of this classic HK staple. The broth had no flavor (adding white pepper didn't help much); the wontons were sad-looking, had no shrimp inside and the 'mystery meat' tasted mushy like it was about to give me food poisoning so I spit it out. The manager insisted the wontons were "freshly made" and walked away but I knew better, so I asked another waiter to sent it back. New dish = Fish fillet with vegs rice plate. The fish was fine, but the vegs were undercooked (onion almost completely raw) and there was very little sauce on the rice. Another fail. Maybe it's not their regular chef for the late night shift, but I probably won't be back. I've been coming here for years and even before when the location was originally Big Fish. It was a reliable spot that you could get good food at a fair price even in to the later hours. It was not too busy on a Friday night with about 6 other groups dining. The restaurant is well lit with comfortably spaced out tables and very nice staff. We ordered satay beef, peking ribs, stir fried pea shoots with garlic, and surf clams. We were so shocked at how small the portions were for dinner compared to just about any other Chinese restaurant we've ever been to. Between my parents and I, we were easily able to finish these dishes. I've never in my life left a Chinese restaurant without feeling full and having leftovers for taking home especially when you order one or more full entrées (not rice plates) per person. We used to have family dinners here and were always content with the food quality/quantity and the service. Don't get me wrong, the flavors were still good, but my parents don't even eat a lot and we were all still hungry afterwards. We have not been here for a while and we've never had this experience in the past so we were very surprised. This is also factoring in the fact that you are paying very similar prices for half the portion as compared to other restaurants in the area like Jumbo, Dynasty, or Peach Farm. Come for their lunch specials or late night cravings when nothing else is open, but if they keep up with the portions like this for dinner then I can't recommend when there are other great options in the area for family dinners. read more

I've been here quite a few times, and quality has always been decent (average or above) but 4 stars for not incredibly consistent. It's still my go-to Cantonese restaurant in Chinatown though! On this most recent visit, we ordered egg drop soup, yu xiang eggplant, and ma po tofu. All the dishes were pretty good, and it was my first time ordering soup here and it was perfect for a cool night! It was pretty quiet on a weeknight, and the servers were especially attentive, friendly, and even cracking jokes with customers. The Dungeness crab was amazing so good. I got a deep fried. It taste really good so fresh it was over 2 pounds and they get it from the fish tank. Amazing. I always get their beef chow fun and fried pork intestines. The service is always great and they're open til 3am making it a great late night option. Jade Garden has been around for quite some time in Boston's Chinatown & is one of the more consistent places, though my favorite is probably still Peach Farm. This is a great place for family dinners, affordable lunch deals, & late night eats! They close at 3am daily, which is honestly pretty insane (& tbh, awesome!) given that Boston isn't really a city that has things open late LOL. We ordered two lobsters with ginger & scallions and heavy Cantonese style sauce. This is a wok recipe that cooks under heavy flames so difficult to replicate at home. Very rude server! Our server was a little older then the others but not too old. When I said that we're first time here and the server didn't mind to give us food options. We did not plan to go eat but we got hungry so we decided to have light dinner in this restaurant. My outfit was a winter pajama. The serve was rude wih us and I believed because we didn't dress nice. We were unhappy and only ordered a few things. The one I got disappointed is the stuf clams with vermicelli. With Chinatown becoming more modernized and new fusion restaurants opening up, it's always nice to have a reliable old-school Chinatown place in your back pocket, and Jade Garden is it for my family. We've been coming here for over a decade, and there's a reason why we keep on coming back. While the prices have increased with the rest of Chinatown, the quality is still great and the portion sizes don't seem to have suffered based on our most recent outing. We ordered the salt and pepper pork, seafood hotpot, beef chow mein, king do spare rib, and beef and broccoli. Salt and pepper pork - crispy, salty, and juicy. Some places make this dish with really fatty or boney pieces of pork, but this latest order had the perfect meat to fat ratio and I really didn't find all that many bones in it. I love the jalapenos mixed in with the fried garlic, and this makes a perfect accompaniment to a bowl of white rice. Seafood hotpot - check out the photo here - this tupperware was packed full of goodies. This dish comes with tofu, squid, shrimp, and fishcakes, and there was no shortage of food here. The tofu beautifully soaks up the delicate white sauce and acts as a flavor bomb - when you bite into it, the tofu explodes with juice. Love this dish! Beef chow mein - growing up, this was my favorite Chinese dish and this version definitely met expectations. It was a bit strange for the takeout order to have the sauce already on the noodles as some places put them in separate containers, but the noodles were still nice and crispy when we got home, so there was no issue there. I love the mixture of crunchy fried noodles with slightly soggy ones that have soaked up the beef sauce, and the meat as usual was really nice and tender. King do spare rib - this is the counterpart to the salt and pepper pork, with a nice sweet and savory sauce over the same type of meat. Like the salt and pepper version, the meat to fat ratio was great and there were very little bones. Another great dish to have with rice! Beef and broccoli - we ordered this to have some extra topping with our fried noodles, and the container came packed full of food. There was a LOT of meat in this dish, which is just what we wanted. Like the chow mein topping, the beef was soft and tender, and the veggies were nice and crisp. All in all, the quality you get at Jade Garden is very high, and the amount of food is surprising. With a lot of restaurants cutting back on volume and hiking up prices, Jade Garden still gives you a good amount of food for the price. 4/5 - we've been coming here for ages and will continue to come back! read more

I am writing this to warn others about the appalling service and blatant discrimination at this restaurant. While I admit there was a disagreement on our end, the way the staff handled it was beyond unprofessional--it was abusive. A middle-aged male waiter, instead of acting as a professional mediator, resorted to screaming insults in Chinese, telling us to "Get out" while still arrogantly expecting a tip. What's more disturbing is the clear dual standard and discrimination we witnessed. This establishment seems to look down on Chinese customers--especially those speaking Cantonese--while being overly fawning and "licking the boots" of Western customers. The waiter was waving a pen aggressively at us, acting as if he had some sort of misplaced superiority. Using derogatory language and personal attacks to resolve a conflict is never acceptable in the hospitality industry. It is clear this business lacks basic crisis management and, more importantly, basic respect for their own community. If you don't want to be treated like a second-class citizen while paying for a meal, do not eat here. read more

For $7.95 lunch specials that provide a hearty portion of rice and chicken is pretty damn good. The place has been a staple for many affordable lunches for years now and will continue to be one of my go tos for cheap lunches. Service is quick, no chit chat waiter gives you two side lunch menu by default (ask for full menu if you're looking for entrees) day pot of tea, takes your order. Food. The sesame chicken was covered is sweet and slightly sour sauce. Came fresh fried but the chicken was dry so had to chew it for a bit. Few broccoli's that soaked the sauce in pretty well. Rice was cooked just right and had the mixed jasmine and regular long grain feel. Ambiance is typical of the ctown restaurants with well lighting, table cloth and workers using one table to prep veggies. Overall excellent affordable lunch place for $7.95. I suggest paying in cash as for such low price and it is ctown so owners generally appreciate not having card trx fees on top. read more

We went on Monday evening 7.8.24 - hold up let me be honest, we came down to Chinatown for a Boba and when I drove up we noticed how often people were coming out of this restaurant with take-out, so we decided to pick something up as well #wheninrome lol Anyhoo classic old school Chinese restaurant you walk in and see all of the fish tanks (that look like they've been there since I was a kid) with crabs, lobster etc. the tables are round and you see a LOT of clientele here who look like they could cook this authentic meal at home but choose to come out. Always a good sign. Our food came up quickly so don't go far if you order and need to run elsewhere. Decent food and great portions. The hit of the night for us was the crab Rangoon....comes with a sweeter sauce and make sure you don't forget the hot mustard. The Kung pow chicken was good. It just wasn't that spicy. It had a lot of different vegetables with a pretty saucey. The general Tso chicken was OK. The meat was kind of chewy and dry. The sauce was kind of clumpy but overall OK. I thought this was a great option for Cantonese dining in Chinatown. I like the layout of the restaurant. It is spacious compared to many Chinatown stores. The restaurant is brightly lit and tables were spaced well. Service was very good. None of us speak Cantonese, but we were comfortable communicating with the staff. Spicy Salt & Pepper Soft Shell Crab - 5 stars. This dish is mentioned in a lot of Yelp reviews for a reason. Flavorful and crispy, you can't go wrong with this. Stir Fried Pea Pod Stems - 5 stars. These fresh vegetables are stir fried with garlic. This dish can be easy to overcook, but these were cooked just right and they were delicious . Pepper Fried Pork Chops - 3 stars. This traditional dish is one of my favorite. It had wonderful flavor, but on this visit it was a bit too greasy. I enjoyed it, but probably ate too many because the grease hurt my tummy afterwards. Sizzling Beef with Ginger and Scallions - 4 stars. I liked this combination because it it a little different from typical beef stir fry combination. And I like ginger. Okay, I was in Boston for work and I stayed in Chinatown. I was in heaven! After a late night of drinking. I prayed something was open. I cannot remember what time it was but it had to be at least 2AM. I did a quick yelp and found the Jade Garden a few blocks from my hotel. When the door opened and I smelled the food my I knew this was going to be delicious. There were a few people eating inside. I quickly made friends with the person next to me. We ended up joining tables. The menu was in English and Chinese. Super authentic and the fact they were made even better. Service was awesome and the food was so good. I wanted to order everything. My new friend was nice enough to share!! This place is delicious and will not disappoint. Good price for portion!!!
