I had saved this as a place to try but never went randomly driving. I noticed it and made Su turn to turn around and go in. It was air an hour before closing, so no food was available for purchase, so I got a milkshake and some desserts. Everything is put together in front of you for the shakes, and the shake was delicious! They had a great variety of ice cream options that could appease most. The cakes were excellent and moist. Small, local Cafe in quaint part of Clayton. My chicken salad sandwich had the sweetest tomato known to mankind. The pasta salad was tasty but the amazing part was the chocolate cake. Hooray for anti-resolutions. If I had made the usual resolutions for the New Year, I'd have missed some tasty treats. Clayton has a surprising number of shops in near proximity with things that are perfect for parties, treats, or splurges in general, but not so good for healthy eating resolutions. I found my way to Nancy Jo's and the moment I walked in, was in a quandary. Do I get something just for the get together with friends later that evening? Or do I get something for just me? Problem solved when I did both. I like it when problems can easily become non-problems. The highlight was the pecan bourbon chocolate bread. It was really more of a cake, but it was delicious and a hit at the party. So was the handmade toffee with pecans. There are small samples available for tasting and that was what sold me on both items. Of course, there are additional bread flavors and toffee types available, but I opted for what I had sampled. In the coolers are additional goodies, like carrot, pound, strawberry and chocolate cakes, mostly the single slice or half-cake servings, and at the counter, some haystack cookies, hand-dipped oreos, and candies. The available items change frequently. If someone needs a large or customized order, Nancy Jo's can take advance orders, with only a few days notice. read more

For being new to North Carolina NANCY JO's HOMEMADE definitely was an awful welcome. My mother and I worked for DAVID (the owner) although I have been out on maternity leave and am currently 9 months pregnant (definitely not returning after this) and I had taken my mom to pick up her pay and as she realized she's short $15 she goes back in to ask why... Last weekend she was scheduled 10-5 at the farmers market. As her hours change, she accidentally forgot and went in at 9am and texted the owner to make him aware and he never responded so she continued her day as usual. Well when it came to her pay he told her he refused to pay her for that hour she was early because "he doesn't pay for employees mistakes" she thought he was joking and told him it was a mistake and he carried on telling her he seriously wouldn't pay her $15 for that hour. So she told him if that was the case then she could have left at 4 instead of 5, so she wouldn't have ran over her scheduled hours, in which he began to be extremely disrespectful and told her "employees don't make their schedule" and he will not be paying her for working that hour. In shock, she told him that's not fair because it was a mistake and asked for him not to be like that and he yelled at her to leave and not come back and as she stood there in shock and looked at her and said " do I need to call the law?"... How awful! And seeing as how my mother was his only Hispanic worker why did she deserve that??? Never have I ever seen him treat any other worker like that nor heard of him refusing to pay and fire anyone else FOR NO REASON much less be so disrespectful to them in-front of customers..Over $15 she got disrespected, humiliated, kicked out and threatened to have the law called on her... never have I ever seen my mom so distraught and humiliated it broke my heart. My mother did not deserve that just for asking why she was not paid for time worked ESPECIALLY after notifying David, the owner, and being left ignored. It honestly feels like it's more discriminatory than anything. No man in their right mind to claims to run a Christian establishment would treat an older woman with such disrespect... NANCY JO WOULD BE ASHAMED OF HOW HER SON IS RUNNING HER BUSINESS AND TREATING HIS EMPLOYEES OF DIFFERENT ETHNICITY. As an employee I also voiced out many times that the bottles that carry the sugar water mix for their lemonade that they make at the farmers market would have black mold on the inside of the cap and in the bottle but always got told that not to mind it and "just make the drinks". My manager always seemed as she didn't want to serve it either but would say we had no choice because David said "as long as it's not floating in the water it's fine" Although the desserts were fine I would steer clear of the drinks or ever wanting to be employed by Nancy Jo's son, DAVID. read more

Just for insight- I had a plan to only guve five stars to Michelin chefs but until I am at those places these results will stand.. Lol We wandered in when family came to visit - as we haven't had time to enjoy much out yet- and found this place charming (and warm and inviting! Yet cool inside ) the girl who was in college helped us and she was really fun- gave out samples of her faves and we had a few similar likes- she showed us some pig picken cupcakes and explained those - ( we have not yet been invited to one of those- but we cannot wait!) and she showed us all types of fudge ( mint was good but admit it was warm out ) and ice cream counter had some amazing flavors of Hershey brand Ice Cream. peach was really great but was most impressed with the selection of cakes and pies and sweetsies in general- we didnt spend much sadly b/c we were full from dinner but we will be back.. especially to get pig pickin cupcakes if we get invited to a pig pickin.. really nice place- She also told us Revival wasn't a church.. we kept seeing signs all over and thought "revival of the 70's " here! On 7/2 my husband and I decided to go to Clayton's Square to Square celebration, which I might add was very nice. We arrived about 1:15 and wandered down Main Street and decided to get something for lunch. Deciding that philly cheesesteak was the choice, we made our purchase from a food truck. Husband made the statement of looking somewhere to sit and enjoy watching everyone and the children having fun. The young lady in the food truck pointed across the street and said there are some empty picnic tables over there. Sure enough there were about 4 empty tables so we proceeded to the tables. Once seated this irate "lady" came to the table and demanded we leave as the tables were for customers of Nancy Jo's Homemade. Now, there is a sign on each table indicating the same. NOTE - there were 4 empty tables. I fully understand having those tables designated for customers of Nancy Jo's during the week and on weekends. I have seen workers go into the convenience store next door and purchase their lunch and sitting at the tables leaving no place for Nancy Jo's customers. Anyway, this "lady" was still demanding we leave. As we started to leave a young lady was sitting at the table next to us and suggested that we do what she and her friend had done - that was to go into Nancy Jo's and purchase sodas - thereby being paying customers. So that's what we did. While husband was making the purchase he was being pointed out by the "lady" to some "gentleman" in the establishment. After purchasing the sodas husband came out to the table and was immediately approached by this "gentleman" and "lady" and we were told to leave the premises immediately. He said he knew what we had done by purchasing the sodas and he would give us a refund but to leave immediately or he would call the police! Over 2 sodas and 4 empty tables! There were more words exchanged and we left. It was not worth arguing over! As we were leaving I spoke to the young couple and told them that I hoped he didn't treat them as he had done us. NOTE - this young couple was eating Chinese food with chopsticks and the last time I checked Nancy Jo's didn't serve Chinese food. Can we say discrimination? Oh well - how did that "owner" know that I wasn't going in after eating my lunch and purchase ice cream or even a cake for a later event? Guess he'll never know, right? No more! I have frequented Nancy Jo's on many occasions to purchase lunch, ice cream and even several cakes - no more! When you have 2000 - 3000 people in downtown Clayton for an event and very limited seating spaces it seems to me that the downtown establishments would welcome potential customers - either on that day or later. We always hear "shop Clayton" - support your local businesses, which I usually do, but if the businesses can't support each other and the citizens of our town - maybe they don't need or want our business. read more

Holy fudge, this place is great! The minute we walked in, the man in white, mister South ( red cheeks, blinding smile), walked out from the kitchen and offered us what he was making at the moment - warm peanut butter fudge. We were sold. I am not even a fudge fan but even my dark-chocolate-from-Swiss ridden soul was touched. In the next five minutes we bought 5 different fudge squares (nutty one, mocha, strawberry cheesecake one, and two peanut butter ones). I was wondering while devouring melting fudge in the scorching sun on the way to the car, how is one really supposed to eat fudge? Like a candy on a run? Or melt it over ice-cream? White napkin, fork and knife style? Regardless it is no longer a question since fudge is gone, however please enlighten me. So I know how to do it properly when I come back. Which is soon. read more

This place is AMAZING. It's right across from the library so whenever me and my kids are at the library checking out books we can come over! Although I have only tried the ice cream, which is delicious, I'm sure the cakes are good also. This is a cute friendly little shop. Having a nut allergy sufferer in the family, we don't generally go to bakeries - but whenever we have the time, and the one with allergies isn't with us, we stop by and devour our sweets before we get home. The dessert breads are so delicious! read more
