I HAD A HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE HERE My first time at Nappy Roots, I came in for a simple TOUCH-UP. My hair was already looking CLEAN AND FRESH, just needed a quick cleanup. The OWNER HIMSELF cut my hair, so I assumed it would be solid... but the result was DISAPPOINTING. The FADE WAS UNEVEN, the lines were PUSHED BACK and CROOKED, and instead of fixing it, he PATTED DOWN the parts that were off. I didn't even look as good as when I walked in... which is NEVER how it's supposed to go at a professional barbershop. After a shower, I picked my hair out and it was the WORST I HAD EVER SEEN. LUMPY, CHOPPED UP, and completely UNWEARABLE. I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE THE HOUSE... it was that bad. They opened late, so I had to find another barber who opened ON TIME and could CLEAN IT UP. But before that, I TOOK PICTURES because I KNEW they wouldn't take accountability. When I came back to speak with the owner, he REFUSED to acknowledge anything and gave every EXCUSE possible. He even told my FAMILY to wait OUTSIDE just to have a conversation... something I've NEVER experienced at any barbershop. I showed him the PHOTOS and the ENTIRE SHOP came to look. People literally started LAUGHING because they could see how wildly OFF and UNPROFESSIONAL it looked. Even then, he REFUSED a refund and offered a free cut "next time." YEARS LATER, I came back just to see if he'd HONOR HIS WORD. He remembered me... but DIDN'T follow through. Didn't even offer a SIMPLE LINEUP. NOW HERE'S WHY I'M STILL GIVING THIS SHOP FIVE STARS Despite everything, I can see this barbershop has built a strong COMMUNITY and CULTURAL IMPACT. The OWNER IS EMPLOYING OTHERS and keeping people working, which matters. And from the reviews I've seen over the years, MANY CUSTOMERS HAVE HAD GREAT EXPERIENCES. What happened to me was UNACCEPTABLE... but I believe in GROWTH and ACCOUNTABILITY. My appointment at a nearby Black barbershop got canceled so I found Nappy Roots. Luckily they were able to see me on the fly. Ray was kind, gave me the cut I wanted and was a perfectionist about getting it right with no agenda but to do a great job. (I'll add that, as a queer person, I don't always feel welcome in many barbershops, especially when asking for a cut that affirms my particular gender expression. This shop was low key, homey, friendly and professional.) I've been to two other Black barbershops in Riverside and this is the only one I've left feeling confident about my cut and their service. I've been a customer here for a little over a year, and I refuse to go anywhere else! Ray (RJ) is patient, professional, and consitent. He takes pride in his work, and the end result is always on point. He listens to his clients and makes sure they're satisfied with his services. I definitely recommend stopping in to get a cut from Ray. He also does facials! They're super relaxing. I almost fell asleep during mine. If he isn't available (you have to book an appointment in advance), I recommend going to Ray (Pops) for a cut. He's great, too! Pops offers walk-ins. There are two other barbers in the shop, but I haven't gotten cut by them, so I can't speak from experience. They do, however, have regular customers as well. As far as the shop as a whole, I enjoy the atmosphere. I never feel out of place or uncomfortable. The only problems I have are the "barbershop talk" and how loud it gets sometimes (from people talking). Otherwise, it's great. I took my boys ages 7 and 11 to get their hair cut today , the barbershop is very clean and and the barbers are very welcoming. My boys liked the barbers who cut their hair ,they changed the music (which wasn't bad or offensive) just because they thought it was appropriate to do so which was very nice , I'm giving them 3 stars because even though they had great customer service the haircut was WAY over priced each child was $25 not including tip and the haircuts were not amazing just a basic cut and line-up my younger son's hair is not even (which I didn't notice until we were already home) and around his ears isn't a clean cut like we are used to for half the price. Since I moved from LA to the IE I could never find a barber that could cut my hair just right. I stumbled upon Nappy Roots and was skeptical like I am with all new barber shops. I called and Ray Sr answered the phone and said come on in we will take care of you. I looked at some of the pictures of the haircuts that were added to Yelp and felt more comfortable. After arriving I waited a bit and then explained to Ray Sr what I wanted and he was very polite and kept asking questions to make sure he was following my orders. Since my first haircut here I have made myself a regular and the environment is family friendly. For anyone looking for a good barber I highly recommend Nappy Roots. I just moved to the neighborhood 2 weeks ago. I found Nappy Roots on google. I was impressed when I arrived because the shop was clean and professional looking. They had multiple large tv's with basketball playing. I was confused because they didn't have a sign in sheet but I waited and realized that most of the barbers had appointments. It wasn't that crowded for a Saturday morning. I had to wait 3 heads but finally Ray cut my head. I'm not much of a chair talker and he wasn't pushy yet he asked genuine questions to get to know a new client and put me at ease. I get a simple bald fade but I'm particular about my cut and he exceeded my expectations. The cut was $25 and it included using a shaver to clean off my beard and trim my mustache area. I will definitely be back in a couple of weeks. Ray doesn't take appointments but the other barbers do. And remember TIP YOUR BARBER. They provide a vital service and they are meticulous in this shop and take their time to make sure you are satisfied with your cut. read more

I had to give them a chance since he's from the Woods (INGLEWOOD)and he didn't disappoint me Ray the owner and Big Funny man Desimo. + I was a walk in with 2 boys, took me right away.
