As a guest artist at the Theatre Festival in town, I wasn't sure what to expect in terms of food in the city, and I'm so happy that in my final week here that I found this gem. The owner is amazing, welcoming, and we had great service and contributed to the overall ambiance of the place. I had the tonkatsu ramen and salmon nigiri, and as a Japanese person from Seattle, I can vouch that this was some very good sushi - thick and exactly what I was looking for. We arrived on a spring day that felt more like winter. The driveway and sidewalk leading to the restaurant were not shoveled. There were a few inches of snow on the ground. My feet got wet on the way inside to have lunch. We arrived and were the only patrons. The interior was underwhelming. We ordered a few items. I asked a clarifying question on the menu, but it seemed there was a misunderstanding. More on that... When my soup arrived, the woman who delivered it (not the person who took my order) screamed from across the room, "udon soup!" It felt like an auction, rather than a normal way to deliver food where upon arriving at the table a server may confirm my order. The food was ok. We were nearly done and I asked for the bill as we had plans soon after. The same woman brought the bill, never asking how anything was or if we needed anything else. When she returned, I asked about the soup I ordered. I had ordered under the "soup" section. I pointed to what I wanted, which was udon soup (the man who took my order did not appear to understand me, but seemed kind and helpful). The soup I received apparently was not what I ordered, though it simply had: broth, udon noodles, 1 kale leaf and a few carrot shavings. I was charged for another udon soup that came with more items. This was more of an entree. She insisted that I should have sent back the soup once it arrived. I told her I had never eaten at this place before, how would I know I received the wrong soup... again, she auctioned it off, as what I ordered, udon soup. I kid you not, again, from across the room and at a 8 of 10 loudness. The soup she believed I ordered should have had tempura vegetables and tempura shrimp (which it did NOT). So I still don't believe I received the wrong soup. She then began SCREAMING "you do not want to pay!" I told her I wanted to pay for what I ordered and what I believed I was getting. She then grabbed the soup bowl out of my date's hands. She took the dishes and THREW them. The people sitting a few tables away asked us if she just threw the plates. YES! She continued screaming, threatening to fire the server, (who she said was covering for her) - how about some gratitude??? for making a "mistake". She then started yelling she was shutting the restaurant for the day. We would be her final customers. Ok! No skin off our backs. She continued throwing more dishes and screaming in a language I did not know at the poor server. She then stated "in 4 years [she] had never been treated as badly as I treated" her. Again, I simply asked about the discrepancy in my order and the price on the bill, which she seemed to understand was not my mistake. However, she continued to jump to the conclusion and reiterate yelling across the restaurant that I "didn't want to pay!" I have never had such a poor experience at a restaurant. It left me feeling rattled for quite some time afterwards. I felt awful for the server dealing with such a toxic environment. This is the reason I didn't give it a 1 star. I know there are other employees counting on the income. I really felt bad for any employees of this person. The level of reaction she had to a question was clearly a trauma response and I imagine she may treat them badly behind the scenes if that is how she treated me in a one off interaction on full display of the general public -- including other customers. read more

Not the best sushi I've had but I guess it's OK for the Berkshires. It was a little odd when we went in for lunch to get some takeout and the lights weren't even on. I guess I don't get much of a lunch crowd and we surprised them . The sushi was fine. The dumplings were fine. Nothing outstanding. But if you're stuck in North Adams and you want a sushi snack, this is your place. read more

Before anything it's BYOB (which is going to save you money) but there is a liquor store about 5 minutes away. Sat for about 20 minutes before my order was taken and an extra 30 for food. Ordered a NARA Roll, Hawaiian Volcano Roll, and a Chili Tai Roll. But when it came it looked beautiful (pictures) and you can tell that the chief puts a lot into their work. Not only is it filled perfectly but they were not light on the sauce. It honestly was the Hawaiian Volcano Roll that did it for me. We were visiting from out of town and were happy to find a sushi place. The food was very good. The staff was pleasant. We ordered a rainbow roll, salmon roll, the beef bulgogi, lots of nigiri, and the mixed tempura appetizer. Everything was very good. The only downside is that they don't serve alcohol. My husband typically likes to have a beer with his sushi and this restaurant is BYOB. Even so, I would definitely recommend Nara Sushi. read more
