I don't live in the area anymore, but every time I'm up here, I make sure to come visit. And the food is always incredible. After an event at the Altamont Fairgrounds, we found Akanomi (thanks, Yelp!). It was an odd time of day which worked in our favor. Visited Akanomi for the first time after hearing good reviews. The restaurant was bigger than I thought with a relaxing atmosphere. The waitress was friendly and gave us plenty of time to review the menu, didn't make us feel rushed. I ordered the dinner box for $25.99 which was plenty of food. I didn't even finish all the rice. I have been going to Akanomi for a decade now. They are a local staple for me. The sushi is always fresh and the staff is so friendly! I feel that the price is extremely fair compared to other sushi spots around here, and I love that you can mix and match three rolls for under $25! We're in town for my daughter's college family weekend. I found Akanomi on Yelp and knew we needed to check it out. The restaurant is on a main road but it's in a quieter part of town. We were able to get a table right away at around 8 on a Friday but the place was full and had a good vibe. Our waitress was pleasant and helped me with an appetizer choice. Service was good throughout the meal. We had age tofu (fried silky tofu), edamame, miso soup, and a black pepper tuna appetizer to start. Everything was high quality. I had two of the special rolls for an entree, the Pink Panther and Tuna Amazing rolls. Two of the better special rolls I've ever had. So fresh! The Pink Panther had a coating of peanuts that I absolutely loved! Really high quality. My wife enjoyed her rolls and my daughter enjoyed the chicken fried rice. I've been here twice. The first time was on a Thursday evening about an hour before closing, very quiet. The second was at 5:45pm on a Saturday, where we got the last available table, all counter and free table space was devoted to holding bags of take-out, and the waiting area was standing room only about 20 minutes later. The good news is that there was no difference in the quality of the food or service provided between these two distinctly different visits. My first experience was the intense aroma of the tea they serve, I almost couldn't wait for it to finish steeping. Strong flavor continued beyond with appetizers and sauces. The rolls were well prepared, accompanied by generous amounts of wasabi and ginger. Small amounts of wasabi enhanced the flavors of the fish rolls, no accompaniment was needed beyond that. For what initially appears to be a small menu, the number of rolls available is amazing. Service was on point, we received just the right amount of service and attention, and tea refills came out quickly. Great sushi and sashimi in Albany suburb. I did not know it was actually a bit further away from my travel route, but it was well worth it. I ordered Chef'a special sashimi It came with 15-pc of fresh sashimi (Salmon, Red snapper, Ahi tuna, Super white tuna and sea bass). The miso soup was not hot enough, but it did not really matter. 2024 - rated by Yelp as one of the best sushi spots in the US (#28 if memory serves me correctly). I don't know what they use for metrics but there you go. I used to go to this place much more often when I lived in the neighborhood. Now, not so much. The Yelp rating piqued my interest so I drove a bit further, past my usual sushi spot to try Akanomi again. Now I'm wondering why I don't eat here more often. The national ranking aside, how was it? IMHO, it really is one of the better sushi places in the Capitol region. I can't put my finger on it but I can taste the difference. There seems to be more care put into the crafting of the sushi. Another thing that surprised me, the proprietress recognized me and did a "Long time..." thing. It's been at least 2 years. That's some crazy memory. It's a really good place. Akanomi has long been the best Japanese restaurant in the area but after my last two times at Akanomi I think it may be time to admit that maybe guilderland just doesn't have a good Japanese place. I think the kicker was when he and I went last weekend for dinner. We were greeted and seated quickly, but seated at a small table to the right of the front door - not In the main dining room, and no one else was seated there. After a few minutes I asked to move as it truly felt as though we had been seated in a closet. There were booths open and available - it really started the meal off poorly. Then we had mediocre sushi; he had forbidden fried rice- should definitely be forbidden. I've never seen rice so pasty and tasted it with a shrimp that was so overcooked it was rubbery. The flavor of the dish was like bad take out Chinese. The hot green tea- which I love because they bring a nice full hot teapot (tetsubin) - well this time, not steeped, and not hot. The standard has gone down and Akanomi is no longer a place worth going. read more

Pretty good amount of food for two. Big drawback was the sushi rice. No vinegar or seasoning aka no taste in the sushi rice! That was very disappointing for me. The balanced flavor of the rice and texture of every grain of the sushi rice were the main components!!!! Also the ratio of the fish and rice weren't very balanced either. Tooo much bland tasted rice in the nigiri. Spider maki was pretty good. Ikura sushi was excellent! Miso soup tasted water down. Not great either! Service was somewhat efficient. Two of our friends got their sushi and habachi dinner entrees came like 15 mins before our sushi boat was served. So the timing was totally off. We had a great lunch at Akanomi. It had been years since we'd been there, and it's as good as I remember. Their kani salad is the best I've had in the capital region. Akanomi was a real shot in the dark. My friend and I had visited Thatcher Park and were headed towards Sharon Springs when we decided to go for sushi. We were unfamiliar with the area. What a find (thank you Yelp)! We are seasoned Japanese food gourmands and ordered Tempura Softshell Crab and Negamaki to start. Both were delicious and on target. Seriously, the photos do these appetizers no justice. The crab, especially, was perfectly cooked. It could have been my entire meal. Our two rolls - Dragon Roll and Ninja Roll - were also spot on. The presentation was really notable, especially the adorable cherry tomato that I had to include in the photos. Tucked in the far corner of a small shopping center, this place is a hidden gem. The food was so delicious at Akanomi! We ordered an array of sushi, chicken teriyaki, and pork gyoza. Everything was flavorful, fresh, and the perfect portion. We also tried a nigiri cold sake that was delicious (can't recall the name, but it was cloudy and strawberry flavored). We decided to give it a shot. Needless to say, we were not disappointed. We went with a party of a total of 9 people. 7 adults, and 2 children. They have something for everyone. They also had some gluten free options for our friend! Drinks were standard. The Mai Tais seemed to be a hit with the group. Bloody Mary was decent as well. They also sell coke products, and seem to have a decent bar. My kids, an almost 3 year old, and a 5 1/2 year old found something to eat. My son ate the chicken children's hibachi right up. My daughter got the vegetable hibachi and ate the rice. Sometimes kids can be picky. Two things stood out to us as far as sushi goes. The presentation, and one roll that i got in particular. My wife ordered a few rolls, one of them being a tic tac toe roll. It was set up like a tic tac toe board. She also got the sweet heart roll, and the lobster tempura roll. She enjoyed both. For me, I ordered 3 rolls. The Pink Panther Roll, Philadelphia roll, and my favorite the Amazing Tuna Roll. Let me tell you, the Amazing Tuna Roll was... amazing. Solid sushi in the capital district! We started off with the Sunomono (sashimi salad) and Idako salad (bb octopus). Both were okay-- the Sunomono was a bit small and served in typical fine dining fashion, and the Idako was cooked in a sweet soy sauce but fell a little flat. We ordered three rolls (hawaii, dragon, tic tac toe) for the main entree-- we liked the hawaii the most (due to the burst of flavor from the mango), the tic tac toe second (the translucent rice paper gives the roll a pleasant aesthetic) and the dragon roll last (it's pretty standard). I've gotten take out here regularly for the last four years and every single time the order has been both correct and delicious. The sushi is fantastic and the staff are very friendly. You want to come early because the parking lot is shared with a few other businesses and is small but I've never had a bad experience. The restaurant itself is clean with comfortable lighting.
