Matcha Yuzu located on Silver Star Blvd inside the Asian plaza, China City, is a bakery and coffee…read moreshop. The bakery sells a wide variety of baked goods that are slightly higher in price. They do have drinks for purchase as well (espresso based drinks, matcha, etc.) , however, during my visit to Matcha Yuzu the staff stated that the drinks were not available at the moment. I've actually tried Matcha Yuzu baked goods at another coffee shop downtown before but I recently checked out their main bakery (had a matcha cookie there). I stopped by Matcha Yuzu on a Saturday around their opening time. The bakery is small and pick up only (no seating). Hoping to grab a caffeine hit I was surprised that unfortunately coffee and matcha drinks weren't available, according to the staff. Not sure the reason why but I can't comment much on their drinks! Baked goods wise, they have a large selection of baked goods on display, each individually packaged for you to choose from. The prices are higher than expected and I actually had a hard time choosing what to order! Staff recognized this and mentioned their bestsellers to me. I opted to grab a Isuzu matcha danish ($9). They accept debit and cash only. If you pay cash you don't need to pay tax!! I ate the danish later that day and it was delicious! The danish was filled to the max with matcha cream which was not too sweet. You could taste the actual matcha flavour which complimented the bread/danish well. It was great. Overall, nice spot for freshly baked goods in the Scarborough area!

Staff were very friendly and keep giving out samples :) Plus, the portion and flavour were very satisfying especially considering the price (very affordable!) Wish I could visit here more often if it were close to me. My favourite of the day was chicken sandwich and napoleon cake, which was pretty big and not so sweet :)

Xuan Bakery has been on my list since they've opened and I finally had the chance to take a peek inside! It's your classic Chinese bakery, so nothing special there - you just take the tray and tongs at the far end and make your way to the register. The spacing can be done a little better - you can't really have more than 2-3 people looking and getting buns at the same time. SELECTION: There wasn't a lot of variety, but with the selection they do have, it was pretty unique. They have two different types of Pineapple Buns (bo lo bao): the classic and a Taiwanese version (which looks like Japanese melon buns). They also have several different sausage buns, including one with cheese and another with pork floss. These also look a bit different, it's not encased in the bun, but it's more of a hotdog kind of look. They also offer cakes and free samples of their cakes, which look and taste like your typical Chinese bakery cakes (not my preferred taste). They seem to really want to upsell their cakes (the lady kinda tried pressuring me to try and buy). PRICE: The prices were on the higher end. You're looking at about $4-6 per bun. They also have a 'lucky draw' going on right now if your subtotal is more than $25, but my draw required a minimum purchase of $35 lol (for a free slice of cake). FAV: The classic pineapple bun. The top was SO crispy yet the bottom was SO soft. I would go back just for this by itself. There was a lady ahead of me who ONLY bought the pineapple buns. She knows what's up.

It had good earl grey flavor in the cake itself. The chestnuts on top and pureed chestnut were pretty good though could have been a bit sweeter. The cream in the cake was light and not too sweet. Overall, a good cake if you enjoy earl grey and chestnut. Price is pretty good for what you get and the fact that you can get it same day is great!

It causes the person you follow's reviews to tier to top when you pull up a business. I find this very handy when researching venues. Rod's Review grading scale explained. Essentially I personally base it on the likelihood of a return visit and I try to be stingy with 5 star reviews since they should be "special" in my eyes. Price/Value also play a role obviously but there are $ and $$$$ littered across my grading scale. 5 stars - "I'll go out of my way" (approx 6 % of my reviews) 4 stars- "If I was in the area I'd go here and would recommend", (approx 38% of my reviews) 3 stars "Maybe if was nearby", (approx 37% of my reviews) 2 stars -"Would likely not return, Only if you want to go", (approx 16% of my reviews) 1 star -"No thanks, even if I was hungry", (approx. 3 % of my reviews)

It is a Hong Kong style bakery, offering a variety of buns (both savory and sweet) and tarts at affordable price. Stepping in, it was more like cafe offering variety of drinks than regular HK style bakery. Bright and clean. Looking closely at each product, the quality seemed to be better than other counterparts- each looked fluffier, less greasy, and a bit more sophisticated in presentation. I got - BLB (Bo Lo Bao): Crunchy cookie crust on soft bun. - Crispy cream: Crispy sweet topping on soft bao - Chestnut Bao - Sugar donut - Egg tart Buns are very pillowy. The taste was "milk forward", no detectable butter flavor, which makes their aftertaste light & healthy. I found that the texture is a bit drier than I preferred. We liked Chestnut Bao. Chestnut paste matched the milky sweet bun. Overall, affordable, a lot of options and comforting. Next time I want to try savory types of buns!!! Oh each buns are individually bagged and sealed. Which is great, but you want to open it before buns with sugar topping get soggy inside. ;)

Their egg tarts are excellent, along with their milk tea. However, I need to call out their frozen rice dishes. It's like a mini clay pot rice place, with chinese sausage and a salty egg. There are other variations as well. If you go to the food court in the mall, they have them already steamed hot and ready to eat! Pricing is reasonable. Each location I've been to has plenty of parking, very clean and comfortable decor along with friendly staff. I would highly recommend this local bakery in the Markham area.
