I've been told National has great donuts, and I enjoy perusing the selection of cakes, cookies and bread, but when it's time to order, there's only one item coming home with me: the snowball. Make that three items coming home with me, because I never leave with fewer than that number: one for the ride home, one for that night's dessert, and one for breakfast the next morning. If you get one for the ride, be prepared to be dusted in a bit of coconut when you arrive at your destination. I can't count how many of these I've eaten, and I've never been disappointed. The chocolate cake is always deliciously moist, the buttercream is put on with a studied hand, in the coconut is literally the icing on this little cake. National Bakery is a old-fashioned classic Wisconsin bakery. LOVE IT. We stopped in to explore their various treats and have a delicatessen lunch. This bakery lived up to its excellent reputation! I was impressed with all the varieties of breads, hard rolls, bags of cookies, cakes, donuts, iced cookies, cupcakes, you name it...they likely bake it! Maple Pecan Danish: National Bakery was founded in MKE back in 1925 in the center of an old Polish neighborhood. Supposedly, its owner Louis Wisniewski named it National Bakery & Deli because he interpreted National in his native Polish language to signify for the people. Today I have a maple pecan Danish. The maple flavor comes from the icing on top and the pecan is a component of the sugary filling stuffed within. One of my coworkers described it as tasting like pancakes and it's hard to disagree. Maple is the most dominant flavor (which is cool with me since I usually don't like nuts in my desserts) with hints of butter and a touch of nuttiness. Playing off the pancake flavor I found this went great with a cup of fresh coffee. If you're a pecan pie lover then I think it would be in your best interest to give these a try. This is across from St Francis hospital. You can easily park on the street unless you're coming for a polish Paczki on Fat Tuesday!! Then forget about it. I bought a chocolate cake with white buttercream for my hubby's birthday. It was delish and we ate it for about 5 days and it was still good at the end. Moist soft flavorful cake and sweet but not too sweet frosting. I have had their super cute cookies here. They are great too. I feel like any day you can a unique cookie to brighten someone's day here. Always a cute gift topper too. When I go, the donuts are pretty picked over so that tells me they are a hot item in the mornings. I have liked what I have gotten here. I think you will too. It isn't super sheik inside. I have been craving something peanut butter and not really knowing what would scratch this itch it just lingered in the back of my mind. I was not far away and I thought would they have something with peanut butter in it and I was in luck because this weeks specials included peanut butter cookies, not what I really wanted because I was thinking of something more exotic. The place is kind of cute with a deli counter as you walk in and L shaped seating along the windows. There was pre made cakes, salads etc along with the fresh breads and sweets. They had the run of the mill bakery items but none of the fancy sweets and I didn't see any fresh pies either. I did leave with a package of peanut butter cookies which were good in a way that nutter butters will never be. The first time I'd heard about this place was from some coworkers. They seem to LOVE the pastries here and always order a variety for special occasions to share at work. I tried the pastries on 2 separate occasions, but was only pleased with the second time. Maybe because I chose the wrong pastry to try? Lol. Anyway, after that time, I was intrigued to go to the bakery to try some of their other pastries. I've tried just about most of the pastries and my favorites are the Maple Pastry, The Cheese Pocket, and the glazed Paczki. The Paczki also comes Iced or rolled in sugar. This bakery makes all of their pastries fresh and they have some pastries that you can take and bake at home. How awesome! I did try baking the Apple Dumplings at home, but found them to not have a lot of apple filling and are mostly dough. That was disappointing so much so that I'm hesitate on trying them again. However, I did try their Ham and Rolls and my my, they were so delicious! They have a special that comes with 3 lbs of Badger Ham, 12 rolls, and potato salad. The best part is that you can choose from like 6 kinds of rolls and 2 different kinds of potato salad! I always get the butter rolls because they are perfectly baked like I like them: Hard on the outside and soft on the inside with a buttery taste. They are not so dense on the inside, which I appreciate so much. They also make cakes and cookies and other pastries! What an awesome little find on this beautiful Saturday morning with my kids! I was searching for a good donut shop near my house, not a chain place but a legit donut shop and National Bakery & Deli fit the bill! I hate to give a poor review to a business that I've heard from longtime Southsiders is a staple in the neighborhood, but I did not have a good experience there. My dad and I went before my home inspection this past summer. It was just before the lunch crowd got there. We were one of three pairs of people. It took maybe 15 minutes to get our order taken and then another 25 minutes to get our food, which was just mediocre. In their defense, there was a mother and son who were rudely monopolizing one employee's time for way longer than was appropriate, but there were several other employees who were not making any effort to give good service, or to move things along at all. Very disappointing for my first time there, especially after my dad talked this place up as being one of his favorite places to go when he lived on the Southside. read more

When I asked for the cake with my name, the lady in the front said "oh yeah the SHE cake" I just looked at her, shocked she would call a cake with "?" and clearly a gender reveal cake, a she cake. I said something later to the person bagging it. You would think that they would've given me a discount. They obviously knew they let the car out of the bag, but nothing from them. Rather than ask and get myself upset, I just left in a hurry. A childhood favorite that's just as good today. The deli ham is perfectly delicious and they have case of deli salads to go with. Sandwiches are available at lunch if you can't wait. The baked goods are the winners (it is a bakery after all). For bread, I like the European Rye which has a wonderful chewy crust and moist interior. National offers the best long johns anywhere along with at least twenty other kinds of doughnuts. My sisters like the #23 which is a chocolate glazed doughnut split in half and filled with pastry cream. Cakes are a staple for family birthdays. National Bakery does have several locations now, but the original is a great slice of life on the south side. During a recent visit, a geriatric gentlemen was getting his ham which comes with free rolls. The counter person patiently listed all the types - dutchy crust, butter crust, sesame seed, poppy seed, rye, plain. The old guy bellowed "you got potato?" even though at no point had potato rolls been mentioned. He was not thrilled at having to begrudgingly accept dutchy crust. I love the south side. read more

The donuts and sweets are the best! I am a fan of the variety of Persians they offer here (think apple fritter), and the plum (prune) filled donuts - very Polish. The Bismarck's are top flight and awesome. These are real donuts. They have a numbering system "21" etc., and I have no idea how it works, but like buying things in Poland, I pointed and said "what's inside that one" and bought a dozen. I think my dozen donuts set me back about $12. The bread selection was modest, but it was darned good. I got a Vienna loaf, and want to come back to try the rye. The rolls come in a darned good selection, and come free with purchased meat. This location is not open Sunday so don't expect HOT HAM AND ROLLS - something that anyone born and raised South of the Hoan Bridge knows makes Milwaukee - um, Milwaukee. They had an automatic coffee maker which made real coffee - and had a "no free refills" sign on it. Love it. Now I have a loaf of bread and a mix and match dozen donuts. Crap. Happy Fat Tuesday!!!! For the last few years I have been going here to grab King Cakes for work. Everyone at work loves them. I've had a few different king cakes from other places and these are by far my favorite. Fair warning if you are looking to get a king cake on Fat Tuesday.... this place is busy. However, they are very organized and the line goes pretty fast. Each year I preorder a few king cakes so I don't have wait in a line. They have a separate area for you to pick up your order. Also, you can't forget about the paczkis. Omg delish! Unfortunately I haven't made it out to the bakery for anything other than king cakes and paczkis but walking in there everything looks delicious and freshly made. National is known for their Polish bakery, especially paczkis. National offers the best long johns anywhere along with at least twenty other varieties of doughnuts. Get a box full, they travel well! They have a numbering system for the doughnuts to expedite service. They should associate a description for each doughnut too. Time & time again, I hear customers asking: " What's in that one."
