First time here. Food: I stopped in expecting to have a hot beverage and a pastry. There were lots of great food choices, including breakfast egg sandwiches, lunch sandwiches, soups, cookies, muffins, and other pastries. I decided on a Turtle Scone, and it was excellent. It had a great texture, was a good size, and had yummy chocolate frosting. The beverage selection was disappointing. There were only a couple of hot coffee choices, and some tea bags. No specialty drinks or lattes like some of their other locations offer. I ended up having water, which just isn't the way to enjoy a scone. Service: The person taking my order was efficient, but not especially friendly. When I commented on the limited hot-drink options, I got a shrug and silence. There didn't seem to be much interest or empathy. Atmosphere: The place is nicely laid out, and the menu board is easy to read. The pastries and cookies are displayed up front, making it easy to choose. There are several small tables where you can eat your selection, but the space seems designed more for takeout customers. How fortunate to have this wonderful locally sourced freshly made with whole ingredients place in the neighborhood! The sandwich of the month of course was the Reuben. It can be ordered hot or cold and I chose hot. It was fantastic and better than most restaurants I've ever been for this sandwich. Layers of boars head corned beef with finely shredded cabbage, sauerkraut with just the right amount of cheese, and thousand Island dressing. The freshly made marble rye really hit perfectly. I love how they still sample their bread of the day slices with or without butter. The fresh focaccia is like a pillow of bread goodness! And their multigrain seeded breads are second to none. Had their special Taylor ham and cheese breakfast sandwich! It was quite delicious- a little strong on the Taylor ham but I love how they're generous with their meat! The workers were so kind and offered us free samples of their pumpkin chocolate chip bread! Will def be coming back again! read more

Overpriced sad bakery. Bread is the least expensive foods to make. Why is it 10 bucks a loaf? I bough a scone and it tasted like a regular bun. I'm not sure if they know what a scone is. Great Harvest is one of my favorite bakeries. And, yes...they're a chain, but definitely not in the usual sense. Coined a freedom franchise, they allow franchise owners plenty of autonomy and creativity. So, whatever Great Harvest you find yourself in, it will be a bit unique to any other Great harvest. One thing I love that every Great Harvest I've been to has carried, is their honey whole wheat bread. Perfectly dense and wonderfully flavorful--it's our go-to sandwich bread (it makes a pretty dang amazing grilled cheese!). Another thing I love is that they generally have a variety of loaves on their cutting board and you can choose one to sample. I've found other breads I love (hellooooo cinnamon burst bread!) by sampling. Their prices are about what you'd expect for bakery bread ($5-ish per loaf) and their service is always friendly. Two days ago I felt health wise with confidence in stopping in to purchase some baked goods. It took me a few moments to observe that Jon Cerny's no longer the owner. Jon and his gracious team, regardless of how busy they were, always greeted the customer(s) with a warm welcome and "We'll be right with you!" And, if they were busy with a task, the customer took precedence. Gone are the friendly, warm greetings and "happy to see you, until next time!" I was in the store earlier and whilst there were plenty of bodies to help, neither took the initiative. I was ignored and with that attitude, I left my items on the counter and walked out. I don't need a 2x4 over my skull to realize that my business was not wanted or needed for that matter. Another EG biz I don't patronize because of being ignored, is Zisters. read more

Came here for breakfast during a work trip in Wisconsin. This was pretty much the only place that was open and we were delighted and welcomed by the smells of sweet bread. GHB makes their own bread and granola in-house and also sells giant cookies, oils (olive/rosemary/garlic) and pre-made soup mixes. A huge bag of fresh pecan granola was only 8! I ordered the pumpkin chocolate muffin and some granola and it was super yummy! The muffin was kind of greasy but it was definitely tasty and fresh- prob because it came out of the oven hours before! The store also has a frequent punch card and the wonderful woman at the counter gave me 2 punches! (13 punches get you a free item, I believe!) I would have definitely stayed longer if not for a meeting. read more

We purchased four loaves of bread to get delivered as a gift. Payed forty dollars each shipment to ship two to different addresses. They were out on 12/14 not delivered until 12/24. No help when I called to get anything shipped that would be fresh (within a couple of days old). 10 day old bread is not very tasty. read more

This place has been around since I was a kid and they're still going strong, still with the same great tastes and great smells. I've never been disappointed by anything I've purchased here, and in recent years, they've begun doing sandwiches, which is great. I try to make it a point to stop every time I'm in town, however, their hours of operation often make that difficult as they close extremely early, apparently even earlier than posted online. I haven't been there since 14 years ago in Texas. Since I was going to the shoe repair shop across the street. The cobbler said that it have lunch! So, I had a soup and cookie they were marvelous! The soup was a tomato bisque and it tasted like summer tomatoes. I like cookies, so the chocolate chip was great. I was to the taste bar and had the focaccia with pesto in it! Another summer taste! Huge decline in service since ownership changed. Previously the bakery had a "small town feel." The staff has completely turned over and with the exception of one staff member, there are no smiles, no greetings, no welcoming you to the store, no "can I get you anything else?", or even a "thank you" or "have a nice day" after your purchase. Plus, some act like it's a big burden to serve a customer. Expired, old products have been sold in the fridge (over a week expired) and when pointed out, the staff member laughed and did nothing about it. The menu sometimes doesn't match what they are selling in store. Something is off in the operations of this place. It's too bad because a few of their items were favorites. read more

This is my new favorite bakery, found this place through yelp, I got to try samples, their prices are pretty steep, but when you taste their products you'll understand, last time I was there I got a dollar loaf of bread because they had made to many loaves. Celebrated a milestone birthday today and stopped in and bought three kringles to treat my co-workers. I chose almond, cherry, and Bavarian Cream. All were delicious and quickly disappeared! I received so many compliments stating these kringles were the best and far better than Racine's! On my way out the door, I grabbed a sample slice of their cinnamon burst bread. Let me start by saying I have gone to this franchise for years. Called to place an order for Thanksgiving and Jon asked me to hold, no problem. After several in house customers, another order taken over the phone, and several other in house customers, I hung up! There are many other Great Harvest places, not to mention many other great bread places...Breadsmith, Sendiks. I will not be returning to this Great Harvest in the future and I will definitely be recommending other options. Poor, poor customer service!! read more

The owner spoke with me about some of the numerous new items he has brought into the store, including fresh biscotti (wonderful) and apple turnovers, and a cinnamon crunch bread that was absolutely delicious! (he told me his family does it up as french toast!) will give that a try. I have to say that the store was spotless, offered friendly, timely service and everyone was extremely knowledgable about the products. I will be driving to Elm Grove to get some of the best bread offered in the city! AND, for all the people searching for great products that are gluten-free, well they have numerous items offered here! read more

The first time I had bread from Great Harvest I was 11 or 12 years old. I couldn't afford to buy the bread myself, but my friend and I would bike here and get big sample slices for free. Fast forward 14-15 years, and I still like this place. Maybe I'm sentimental about this location (it is a chain), but the owner is awesome and the bread is delicious. Why I like Great Harvest: 1) The bread. Sooo good. 2) They grind the wheat there, which means super fresh bread. They make the loaves fresh every day. 2) You can have a free sample of anything before you buy it. 3) They have amazing sweet and savory things, and not just bread (the roll-ups, muffins & coffee cake are good, too). 4) The owner will set aside bread for you (one time, I was visiting a friend's family on the east coast and the owner held a loaf of the cinnamon pull apart for me so I could take it along). 5) They donate the unsold bread at the end of the day to food shelters, which I interpret to mean they care about the greater community. Seriously, this bread is delicious. I make sure to make a stop here every time I am back in Wisconsin visiting family and then try not to eat it all in one sitting! read more
