Saw the recent TikTok about National Bakery Detroit so had to check it out and so glad I did. They had a plethora of delicious looking donuts, cookies and other sweets. I got the raspberry glaze, which was light, sweet and perfect with my morning coffee. Front staff was friendly and helpful, the new ownership seems to have smoothed out some of the hiccups I read in other reviews. My mouth was happy, the price is right so I will be making this a regular stop. read more

Well, This establishment has changed hands and is under new ownership, I was in the other day and the price for a dozen donuts is the same 12 dollars a dozen great love that, The young woman behind the counter was nice great love that too, But I was very disappointed by the size of the donuts, They are half the size they were before, I hope this changes or they may lose the regulars. I will try one more time to give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe it was a bad day. read more

Walked in and the first thing that hit me was a weird sour smell. No one was behind the counter. Except for a small black fly that was flying around landing on different donuts in the top shelf of the display case. Did not hear anyone coming or acknowledging that I was there. Was about to leave when an older woman appeared. I chose 1 donut for my son, from the bottom shelf (farthest away from the fly). Then I I realized they don't take credit cards there, only cash. With the devastating closure of my beloved Dutch Girl Donuts, National Bakery has some pretty big wooden clogs to fill and it's done so admirably even if it never will have quite the same iconic status in my mind. (Dutch Girl is supposed to reopen at some still undetermined point with the original recipes being passed down along with the building so if it rises like a phoenix maintaining its previously exemplary standards then consider this review a 4.5 so Dutch Girl maintains its status as Top Dog.) The outside of the building is pretty bare bones but they get automatic respect for holding it down on a desolate commercial strip lacking any other businesses on one of Detroit's mile-and-a-half roads, E. State Fair. Hand painted Plain blue block letters announce the name of the business along with the 5am - 5pm hours. The word NATIONAL is on separate white board affixed to the facade of the building so it originally said simply BAKERY and there's more space between the E and N of OPEN than between the N and the 5 that begins their hours. A coffee cup accompaniment, the only graphic is a simple outline. A more complete filled in coffee cup graces a diagonal wall on the corner of the building that covers where a doorway used to be. It reads HOT CUP COFFEE. I don't know why Yelp has National Bakery listed in Highland Park, a "suburb" surrounded entirely by Detroit, abutted kitty corner by Hamtramck, which is in the exact same situation. National Bakery is in Detroit proper, a whole mile and half north of the Highland Park border and east of it as well. If you're driving around near any of the cities you can instantly tell which one you're in by the street signs. Detroit's are green with white letters and Highland Park and Hamtramck have blue signs with white letters. But that's neither here nor there... My maiden voyage to National Bakery, only undertaken once Dutch Girl had shuttered, was a bit rough. The two ladies in back were having a loud argument and I only got the attention of the one by tapping my key on the glass counter. Fortunately, in several visits since there hasn't been a repeat of anything like that. It's $4.80 for a half dozen donuts and just shy of ten bucks for a dozen. They're pretty delicious, even if they don't practically melt in your mouth like Dutch Girls used to. (I had a co-worker tell me once that he thought Dutch Girl Donuts were too soft which I disagree with but I have to respect. I think National Bakery would probably meet his standard, though.) I've never tried anything but the donuts here. The coffee looks good but coffee has been upsetting my stomach lately so I've basically cut it out. They do have a fridge with sodas and juices. There's also other baked goods like cupcakes and cookies. This is a true old school mom and pop hole in the wall and though it might not have the cool branding and quite as much charm as Dutch Girl it's pretty awesome on its own. Honestly, it's maybe unfair of me to try to hold National Bakery to that standard but I just can't help myself. Yelp isn't known for being the most objective place after all. read more

They have the freshest donuts at a very reasonable price. They don't skimp on the filling either. I like the apple fritters. I would go more often when I had to go past that area. Now I will plan a trip there. read more

Cheaper than Dutch girl and with a wider variety, open to serve early in the morning and frequented heavily by neighborhood folks. A staple. The staff is friendly and on a first name basis with most regulars. They also offer hot coffee. Easy access to 75, street parking. Check out the Apple fritters! read more

They have the nicest people working, the baked goods are always fresh with very good prices .. The white bread makes the best grilled cheese, and you definitely cannot forget the pumpkin pie for the holidays and the paczki for Fat Tuesday....by far my favorite Detroit bakery, the fact that it's easy to get to right off of 75 makes it that much more perfect. read more

I wanted to explore the area where I spent my early childhood. It's only 5 minutes from Palmer Park, and look at the love that is going on over there. Like the previous poster, the area is extremely distressed, two lane road with very narrow sidewalks, but with surprisingly just as many intact residential blocks as blight nearby. When I saw a bakery and an open sign, I swung my car around to see what we could find. The bakery counter had a selection of pastries and you could see the industrial ovens in the back. There was no one at the counter, but once we called out, we were helped by an older middle aged woman. We picked out large yeast bread rolls ($.25 each, 6" diameter) and a poppy seed roll ($4.00 for a 12" loaf) out of the mostly sweet pastries available. We'll try to the poppy seed roll for dessert tonight, but already used the bread rolls for big fried egg sandwiches and greens sandwiches - really good. You can order ahead for cakes and pasties. I'll try to come here again. It's a rough looking area where the bakery is, and I've been in Detroit a long time. We left for a reason. Had to post for their old school white bread. Simple ingredients and sliced just slightly thinner-than-normal which makes it great for toasting. Still haven't found anything quite like it in the 15 or so years since discovering it. In a very distressed neighborhood ... this business is just about the only functioning storefront on State Fair between Woodward and I-75, at least early in the morning. Thumbs up for maintaining a welcoming presence. That said, I haven't actually been in the store, but I've seen their products in Fresh Approach in Royal Oak and a few other places. When I called one time to see where they distribute, they had no idea what I was talking about and probably thought it was a prank call - this is really a corner bakery first and foremost. It's easy to distinguish their loafs from the others - plain plastic bag with the label/ingrediants printed on a tiny square of paper that's placed inside the bag (not even a sticker). read more
