Wow, where to start!? We were totally unprepared for the experience of visiting the New Palace Bakery. Wall to wall and floor to ceiling baked goods. We got there on a Friday, day before Valentine's, a week away from Fat Tuesday, around 11:00 AM, and we still had to wait in line. So be prepared to wait, this place is very popular, but it will be worth it. We actually went just for authentic Paczki, but ended up with loaves of challah, Russian rye and marbled rye breads. Wish we could have bought more, but I'm currently cutting back on sweets and knew I needed to exercise self control, lol. Best paczki ever! Got home and cut them into quarters so I could try them all! Cookie butter cream and cinnacream were new flavors for 2026, and I loved them, though cinnacream slightly tastier than the cookie butter cream. I've never had polish pastries before so my MoL got a bit of everything for me to try. And OMG I looooove the raspberry Kolaczki! We got a small box of them and none of us can stop eating them. By day two it was all gone! The shop has sooooo many pastries and desserts it's actually a bit overwhelming. If you're indecisive, just get a bit of everything haha! We loved everything about this bakery. They are pros and you feel the love in their food. The service was excellent, and they get the pastries for you. The cookies are sold by weight. This pre-Paczki day weekend, we decided to try out and compare three different paczki bakeries. New Palace Bakery came highly recommended and was first on our list to visit. The interior was like a madhouse even thought it was less than an hour after they opened on Saturday. Luckily they have a number system to help with making things orderly but I can't even imagine what it would be like going in on Fat Tuesday... Since they were busy prepping for the day-of, they only allowed customers to get Paczki singles, or pre-packed boxes of paczki. No customization allowed. We got three single paczki, along with a couple of pastries they had on display. Triple Chocolate ($3.95) - As soon as we bit into this one, we knew why New Palace Bakery is the Paczki headquarters of Metro Detroit. The taste and crumb of the dough is spectacular. You can really tell the amount of time they take to really develop that dough, making it rich (much richer than brioche), dense, with a amazing chewy crumb that sticks together well and a very well developed taste. The chocolate cream on the interior I was less enamored with. It's kind of like a thicker pudding and had a very distinct almost artificial chocolate flavor. Not my favorite. The entire paczki is dipped into chocolate, creating a nice coat, and then studded with mini chocolate chips. Honey Cream Dream ($3.95) - This paczki is cut in half and filled with a lightly sweetened, smooth cream. I didn't really taste any honey in the buttercream, but there was a very light honey drizzle that complemented the donut nicely. I liked this one the most out of the three. It's simpler than the others, but absolutely delicious. Orange Creamski ($3.95) - Again, this paczki is cut in half and filled, this time with an orange creamsicle flavored buttercream. It tastes exactly as described - artificial orange with cream. The buttercream in this instance is quite a bit more granular/gritty in comparison with the Honey Cream. Lemon Boats ($1 special, normally $2.95) - The lemon boat has some nice flaky puff pastry layers with a jellylike tangy and sweet lemon curd on the top and interior. It's dusted with powdered sugar but overall the pasty is not too sweet. I also heard a couple of weekends ago, they were offering the special paczki flavors of years past. I wish I had visited to try all of them out! New Palace Bakery is a Hamtramck classic and it's easy to see why: delicious baked goods, plain and simple. read more

Prior to coming to Michigan I had never heard of a paczki, much less that there was a whole paczki day leading up to Mardi Gras. Luckily my visit coincided with the lead up to paczki day, and we came here to get a few while we were in Detroit. The bakery was PACKED. I had no idea jelly donuts caused this much of an uproar. Everyone in the shop was joking around, and the women working behind the counter were taking orders and boxing up paczkis with factory like efficiency. We ended up ordering a box of 6 raspberry paczskis, and I promptly ate one as soon as we were out of the bakery. Then I understood why the bakery was so full. I love this place! If you want to experience a true Polish bakery, New Palace is a must visit! They are known for their delicious paczki and they literally "own" Fat Tuesday. But they also have delicious breads, pastries, cookies, sausages, deli meats, pierogies, cakes, etc - year round! I always visit this bakery at Christmas time to pick up angel wings, fruit cake, poppy seed cake and a pound of their delicious Polish cookies. You feel like you're transported to a little bakery in Poland when you're here and the Polish women working behind the counter are sweet, efficient and quick. Every time I travel somewhere new for the first time I take great joy in trying to find an amazing local bakery, non-corporate and hopefully family-owned. Well, my girlfriend and I were in Detroit and we found New Palace Bakery!!! We went in on Saturday, and all I can say is WOW! Packed with every kind of tort, pastry, cookie, pie and bread you could want, not to mention the incredible paczki selection. Even thought the customer area was full the whole time we were there, which you might expect from a bakery so popular, we never felt crowded, and were polite to everyone. We got some peanut butter filled chocolate cookies, an assortment for her kids, two paczkis for us (Traditional custard for me, PB&J for her) and a box for me to take back to Chicago. ALL were excellent, and we couldn't have been happier to have made the trip from downtown Detroit! This may have been our first visit, but it won't be our last! read more

Ever want to love something? On a nice sunny, warm November day I got the chance to run in. When I try somewhere new I get a variety of things. In this instance I got a few donuts, cookies, pastries, I got literally 10 different things AND a pound of Angel wings. I bring them home and I slice them up so my kids can try each thing. The picture below is after them picking one of each. The donuts were stale. Hard. Just one bite and I couldn't eat anymore. Cookies were stale. You know that cardboard taste when something isn't good. That was this. Even the cream pastry just wasn't good. The Angel wings I bought are still sitting almost completely full. I like to give them the benefit of the doubt since so many people love this place. But- I will say, idk how they made it to 31st best donut shop because they were not good at all. What a gem. An old fashion neighborhood bakery that is getting rarer and rarer these days. It is worth the drive. Cases full of cakes, cookies, bread, donuts, and even year around - paczkis. Dieters will go off them for a while walking into this place. If you want paczkis that are real and not those jelly doughnuts being passed off as paczkis that you find in those chain grocery stores, make the trip here. While they have the types your grandmother would remember, their modern twist of mixtures and flavors will brighten the heart of those 20 & 30 somethings who crave experiences with their food that us older ones will never understand. I usually just get the apple and raspberry type. Not as adventurous as the youngens. I have been eating paczkis from here for close to 25 years. 3 years ago I even braved the Saturday before Ash Wednesday where you wait in a long line just to get into the place, but I wanted EBS'S kids to have their 1st taste of paczkis to be the best. (I knew that the way he called his ex the anti sugar Nazi it would take Dad's girlfriend to be the 'bad" guy) for them to get to eat one. I also got a cupcake and the cake part took me back to those rich buttery yellow cake that we made from scratch. I will be back to get something other than paczkis because by my pictures you will see other temptations. The pierogis are delicious and fry up nicely and boil just as well. They're so easy to make and taste like they were just make by hand, as they should! I was delighted by this place. We stopped in here for paczki a few times around Paczki Day, when they are truly slammed. Most all bakeries make packzi on the big day, but these guys are making it for at least a month before and a while after - if not all year. The lines on Paczki Day this year was apparently hours of waiting, so I'm happy to have gone the day after when I had a 2-3 minute wait. This year they seemed to do less flavors than they've done historically, but we found them to be completely delicious. Will absolutely make this a yearly stop, though probably won't be waiting in that crazy line anytime soon! Also worth checking out the wealth of other baked goods they have here. I have never left a one star review on Yelp but I felt like I had to on this bakery. The products in the window looked great and I love Polish baked goods. We bought 5 different things to try. When we got back to our room and tried them we ended up taking one bite of each item and then throwing them away. It is rare that a bakery item is so bad you throw it away after one bite. I had an early appointment in the area which was a perfect excuse to get a donut and a coffee. I thought to myself, Rebecca if you skip lunch you can have a donut. I occasionally indulge in a crispy cream long john with cream and not custard. I don't care for custard. New Palace's John long with cream is perfection. The cream isn't too sweet and through donut itself is light and airy. I sat in the little community space a few doors down and made quite the spectacle of myself eating with luster every bite of my donut. I left covered head to toe in powdered sugar. I'm so sad to leave this review, but I expect more from a Polish bakery on Fat Tuesday, and New Palace left me disappointed again this year. We have been special ordering there for many years since Sweetheart Bakery closed. They just aren't what they used to be. I definitely recommend getting traditional flavors versus specialty flavors. I wish they would just focus on what they do well because the specialty flavors with the exception of a few aren't worth the price. The dough has not been fresh, and they taste like they've been fried in old oil or sitting in the refrigerator too long. The fillings as of late are comparable to a canned pie filling from the grocery store, just goop. There has been a lack of glaze and powdered sugar - the finishing touches that make all the difference. I've honestly tasted better paczki from bakeries that aren't known for making Polish baked goods. They're no longer worth the drive, the hours long wait, and the cost. read more

Well, this pains me, It does. This has been my go to bakery for YEARS. Since i was much younger. I would ONLY get my packzis from here, my fresh bread, the kolaches. So I was excited to be in the neighborhood, and stop in and buy a few desserts since I wasn't able to get my packzis this year due to the 'Vid. The service was- really weird. We came in- a party of 3, fully masked up,way ahead of closing time and people came from the back and were kind of aggressive and passive at the same time. The feeling we all got ( after discussing our experience) was that , we were bothering them. We were all polite, and since we were ordering separate, we ended up having 2 members of the staff help us out. " Is that it? What else?" I purchased 3 dessert pastries, a pound of kolaches and 2 breakfast pastries. My total was just over 30 dollars. Mine you these desserts were the size of the palm of my hand, as were the breakfast pastries. I felt as if the breakfast pastries were outsourced- maybe out of a box and baked? The kolaches were pretty gross- they tasted so stale and old. The filling was rock hard, like try to chew and end up with a rock in your mouth that you cant bite into. I got a variety of filling and none were good. I've purchased them before- hence the reason i got a pound- also because I felt a little rushed, I didnt want to have them weigh out specific half a pound. The desserts were pretty gross as well. It felt like they were all those shortcake shells you buy at the store to make strawberry shortcakes at home. And then buttercream was piled on top, Way too much buttercream. Like an inedible amount. My mother spent about $65 dollars of desserts that they threw away because it tasted old, was inedible or tasted off. I'm hoping that the 'Vid hasnt impacted them this much that they have lowered their standards, but for nearly $100 dollars spent , to walk away with complete disappointment is not the way to keep business going. read more

This review is about paczki's only! We are not commenting on their other products, which we suggest you try for yourself. We have been coming to New Palace for paczki's since about 1988. We purchased paczki's elsewhere, but they never compared to those we purchased at New Palace. This year, something has changed. Not sure if cost cutting was necessary due to the pandemic, but the fillings this year, were not New Palace fillings. The fillings appeared to have been watered down and loaded with sugar substitutes. More sweet than flavorful. The paczki's themselves were good, but the fillings were not. Of the 6 we tried, all were pitched. The rest we gave away. We weren't too thrilled with having to buy predetermined mixed boxes, either - though that is likely due to a desire to reduce exposure. But, that forced us to buy 1 1/2 dozen just to get the flavors we wanted. Of course, that became a moot point, given the flavors were lacking, anyway. Needless to say, we were very, very disappointed, and after 30+ years, I think this is an end to an era. read more

What can I ay about New Palace that everyone who knows about the bakery doesn't already Know or experienced? Everyone here is always friendly and extremely helpful. And even though it gets busy, they remain patient as selections are made from the wide selections of goodies that literally surround you. And it can be really difficult to make a choice as everything just looks so good. A personal favorite of mine are their tortes and babkas - especially around Christmas and Easter. On fat Tuesday you can expect to see people lined up at 3-4 AM to get their polish fix before all us good God-fearing sweet eating polish food lovers start Lent.. Our turn finally arrived and we ordered 18 donuts! Chocolate, lemon, blueberry, lemon, custard, cherry, buttercream, chocolate and custard...and on and on and on. We were so excited to try these delectable sweets! As soon as we got in the car, we spit the apricot and we kinda liked it, so naturally, we decided to go for #2, and split the raspberry....yak! Our trip today made us miss The New Martha Washington Bakery even more. Those sisters were the best as were their paczki. -The drive from Lansing was worth it for the Polish Village Cafe lunch -New Palace paczki are very heavy, almost stale. fillings are very good. -There is no list of filling selection -what they had in the window was half of what "was in the back". -Had to request 7 flavors "from the back" -Person waiting on us was not happy to be doing so -Gave us a few glazed when we asked for powdered sugar (4 of 18) -We'll look elsewhere for next year, but will STILL go to the Cafe for a lunch. read more

Christmas is a big deal in Polish households. The baked goods are the centerpiece of the dinner table. I used to go to Martha Washington but it closed so we went to New Palace. We ordered and expensive Masurka,it was so stale and hard we could not believe it.The frosting tasted like whipped lard with sugar and tasteless except for the hard lines on top. Made me ill for 2 days. The bread, in fact, all of the baked goods we bought on Wednesday. Rye bread,pumpernickle breads, kalaches and Angel Windg. Bread got stale and moldy before Saturday, Mazurka (see above), bread moldy and old,Angel wings were thick and tasteless. I have been going since my childhood and wiii never go back.
