Everyone has an instant story associated with a hometown business. Most people I know have a Star Bakery memory. My cousin lived nearby and as a boy we would deliver his newspaper route and ride bikes to Star for a huge cinnamon roll with the gooey brown sugar and raisins. Some days it required TWO chocolate milks to wrestle one down! They still sell 'em today. Members of my family have been buying at Star Bakery for over 70 years. Obviously, a legand in Northwest Detroit. It's not a modern day bakery. Most everything is a Jewish classic but made just like they did 60+ years ago. Seven layer cakes, small bumpy loafs, star sugar cookies that melt in your mouth and oh yeah, bread. Miles and miles of bread. Mandel bread, marble rye, really most any bread you can think of. It's about traditional with the bakers at Star. Not only are you exposed to well preserved ancient recipes and Orthodox Jewish delicacies, but, the fellowship will keep you coming back. I was so sad when the Star Bakery closed. I have fond memories of walking there with my aunt (when I was a little girl) when we would visit the neighborhood. Now that it's reopened, I am hoping everyone will rediscover the reason it should have never closed. I just got the best rye bread of my life there for St. Patricks Day, in addition to picking up the very best cinnamon raisin bread on the planet (no kidding). If you haven't been there in a while or if you forgot that they closed and reopened or if you have never been there, it's worth a trip over to Coolidge Rd in Oak Park between 11 and 12 mile Rd. The breads are fresh baked, the bagels are amazing and you will never know what other amazing treats you will find there. So glad they are back! read more

I have loved, and will always love, Star Bakery. My childhood was filled with fluffy Star Bakery challah, sweet tea cookies, and an occasional earned hamantaschen. No one - NO ONE - makes kichel the way they do. It's so light and airy, yet has an amazing crunch and bite. My dad worked at star in high school, I never had a Shabbat at home without a star challah, and my kids beg to stop in when we are in Michigan for a visit. During this most recent trip, we stocked up big time and will freeze everything, eating it a little at a time to make sure it lasts until our next visit! read more

Star's hamentashen are heavenly with the same taste I remember when I was a little boy. I'm 75 yo now. When I'm. n the neighborhood I load on challah or rye bread and the 7-layer cakes. Why not? Let me preface this review by saying that Star Bakery has always been my very favorite ever since I was a kid. Everything there was always delicious no matter what you got. Their seven layer cake was always phenomenal and worth a 20 mile drive, and their cookies were firm (The extra large chocolate chip refrigerator cookies were always my first choice) - a little crunchy and not overly sweet. All the choices are still available but it seems that the new owner has changed the recipes --and not for the better. The Mondel bread was covered in so much cinnamon and sugar that it ruined the taste. My guests and I were scraping and shaking the sugar off in the sink and there was a good 2 tablespoons of sugar left in the bag after I took them out. I was looking forward to that big refrigerator cookie but when I took it out of the bag it literally bent over in my hand into three pieces. It was thinner, soft, and tasted completely different, not slightly crunchy and too sweet- a little like cookie dough. . The signature taste completely gone. The caraway rye bread was good last time I was there (about 3- 4 weeks ago) but I haven't tried this loaf yet. All the choices are still there, but even the mini assorted cookies that we used to get by the box do not taste the same at all. So.... If you see this review Star Bakery, please PLEASE consider returning to the ORIGINAL recipes as this is what has kept customers returning for the last 50+? years. We want to love you but some things are better left unchanged. 2 stars for the friendly service (as always!) and good selection. read more

I was a customer years ago, had to send a gift to a family recently and called them for help. They came through with a wonderful gift basket of goodies and worked to be sure that they were delivered on time. Loved this bakery as a kid, and still love them 60+ years later. This is the bakery of my youth. Picking up a small seedless rye and a couple of sprinkle cookies are some of my favorite memories. The quality is still there, but it appears the owners have six figure gambling debts because the cost of cookies and bread now is nothing short of price gouging. $2.89 for a chocolate chip cookie. I kid you not. $6 for a small rye. What used to cost a total of four to five dollars is now fourteen to fifteen dollars. And the owners are completely unapologetic. So, I am done with Star and will suffer through Zeman's goods instead. Too bad, all the way around. read more

This was never my go to bakery but it is now. It's been years since I've been here, But I was craving an onion roll one day and it was spitting distance from a job I was doing. The onion roll was amazing I ended up getting a piece of seven layer cake and they gave me a little free cookie. The staff is more than accommodating and that and itself gets me in the door. Their bread isn't dry their seven layer cake is amazing and all in all even though it's not kosher it's just a great Jewish bakery and the prices are really reasonable. I live in Mt. Pleasant. I drove out of my way to stop at the Star Bakery on Friday afternoon, April 14th, just the get a rye bread. I had made a corned beef to bring to my friend. I purchased my rye bread. Went to my friend's home, located in Wyandotte only to discover this rye bread was stale, dry and almost tasteless. I was very disappointed. I will not return there. Delicious cinnamon & sugar danish. Lots of cinnamon & sugar inside and out ... just the way I like it! Also bought a beautiful loaf of challah with sesame seeds. It toasted up really nicely. Star's 7-layer cake did not disappoint. We ordered a whole cake for Rosh Hashanah dinner with the family. Oh my God. It was so yummy. Perfect texture. Creamy layers between super moist cake layers. It reminded me of the cakes we ate as young kids during the 70s. Bubbie approved! What more could one ask for? read more

I have been there twice since It has changed ownership. I am completely disappointed. The sprinkle cookies that I cherished were bland and tasteless (TWO TIMES!!!). They still look so beautiful. I was so embarrassed when I brought a cookie to a friend and told them to try the best cookie they ever had!!! It was SO embarrassingly funny when we both bit into our cookies, and they were tasteless & doughy---our faces told the story, at least we had a good laugh because my buildup of how good this cookie was going to be was so big. The color of the dough isn't even right anymore, The baked tea cookies used to have a more golden color. Now they are pale white. On to the seven layer cake, which has always beena staple on my buying list when I visit the STAR bakery. The last two times it has looked beautiful, but there are major differences: THE LAYERS DON'T PEEL EASILY and the cake isn't as firm. The frosting is not the same....if there's such a thing as too much sugar in this cake, I think I found where they put the missing sugar from the tea cookies! And last, but certainly not least it's the mandelbrot ... Forever they were made with chewy cherries and pieces of almonds. If you were lucky you got a cherry in each piece. Now they are covered in cinnamon sugar. Star bakery your breads are still good, work on those baked goods and bring back the old recipes. (This is not Marty's cookies.. This is a Jewish bakery that has been on Coolidge hwy for over 50 years! People want what they remember when it comes to baked goods) two stars are for the baked goods, because at least the bakery is still standing. I have been going to Star since I was a kid, which is over 60 years. Everyone was always very nice there and I felt welcome, their challah, rye and pumpernickel were the best in the Detroit, and prices were reasonable. When you support a local business you want to have a positive experience in terms of the purchase and interaction with the people in the store. Star has new owners. The breads are still made well. Now there are more upscale aspirations and slightly upscale baked goods with options for getting fancy shaped challahs for special occasions, amongst other new introductions. Their new cinnamon rolls are good. It's nice that they are being creative and have ambitions. Unfortunately there is also a new, snooty attitude behind the counter at least with some people. Also their prices are considerably higher so it's currently $5.75 for a rectangular sandwich challah, obviously inflation is also a factor. I got there 5 minutes before closing and they had all the baked goods that hadn't sold bagged up on the counter, what I thought was ready to sell as day old. I asked if they would sell them at day old prices which the bakery had done forever previously. The person at the counter said no. This seemed ridiculous and rude. This was also a new policy for the bakery which had always been reasonable about reselling things at the end of the day as day old. Then I saw a couple reviews within the past year of Star on yelp saying what someone bought at Star as new tasted stale. It would be pretty sad and unethical if they were selling day olds as new. If it wasn't the case it struck me as being unfriendly, slightly rude and off putting not to sell me goods that would be day old goods 5 minutes later. They just on the whole don't seem as friendly as they used to be - somewhat snobby. This might seem trivial but for me it reflects a sad and somewhat fundamental change that breaks with what was a wonderful tradition and anchor for the community that Star has been during my lifetime. read more

This bakery may specialize in Jewish bakes goods, however two out of four of my purchases were stale or hard as a rock. I purchased two elephant ears and a golden bake good half covered in chocolate and filled with creaminess, both were stale and hard as a rock. Keep in mind, these items were on display behind the glass display. My canine enjoyed them. A co-worker purchased a seven layer cake from Star which I thought was heavenly and decided to try some of their other bake goods since I was in the area. BIG MISTAKE! As I live in Shelby Township, it will not be difficult to avoid this bakery at all cost. I wasted $13.50. Well to be fair the bread and bagels I purchased were good. I ran in to this bakery to hopefully get 2 dozen treats for a meeting. I went in and the smell of all the fresher baked bread and various delicious looking treats. I ordered a variety of morning Danish, including cheese, fruit, prune. They were a hit! Very sweet lady helped me and made my selection easy. Very nice place. read more

My son and I stop after school a couple of times a month for turnovers. They are the biggest I've ever seen so we usually split one. We do love the course sugar coating. Sometimes the filling can be a little sparse, but we enjoy them just the same. Haven't had the best experience with a few other items. Their cheese danish isn't really cheesy. And sometimes the danish can seem a little stale. But have purchased day old brioche for french toast, which we enjoyed. Stopped in on a hunch while having some serious carb cravings. This place did not disappoint! I got a nut horn, which was awesome. A danish with cinnamon swirled in the dough, and walnuts scattered throughout and sprinkled on top; it was very satisfying for my craving. They also had a bunch of cookies and treats that were common in my childhood, with my family having a big Easter Europe influence. Angel wings, Russian tea cookies, etc. They all looked great but I was sure if I bought them they would not make it home. I plan to go back there and buy some bread. Why? Well I called my bestie on my way out, complaining that she never told me about it despite the fact that she literally grew up across the street from this place in Huntington Woods! Rude and racist bakery. Gave me the runaround about ordering a cake. Wouldn't let me order over the phone because an in person deposit was required. Then when I went in to order, wouldn't take my order - said/pretended they didn't know the pricing or sizing of cakes.
