This place is ok but honestly nothing is great. Everything is just ok. Nothing our group tried was worth the price or something we would order again. I bought a few boxes of random items for my family and friends to try. Nothing was bad or anything like that just nothing that would make me want to stop in again and try. Service was fine. A tough decision, what to try because everything looked wonderful. We got one caramel covered baklava and a second chocolate covered baklava, and each took a bite of each. Pastries and desserts of every kind, coffee, and ice cream?! What's not to love?! If you happen to find yourself in downtown Royal Oak, do yourself a favor and stop in Astoria for a sweet treat. My favorites are the macarons, chocolate chip cookies, and peanut butter pie. The macarons are huge and are perfectly flaky. My friend actually had a macaron party where everyone brought macarons from different bakeries and we voted on our favorite and the raspberry macaron from Astoria was the clear winner. They have at ton of dessert options including strawberry shortcake, cheesecake, cinnamon rolls, baklava, cannoli, mini pies, cupcakes, caramel apples and more. When they package your desserts, they put them in a pretty box tied with string. The coffee and lattes are also delicious. The last time I stopped in, I had a cafe au lait that was delicious. The ice cream is also very tasty and they offer it year round. My friend said the superman ice cream at Astoria is his favorite. The atmosphere is warm, inviting, and cozy. I will say however, the seating here is extremely limited and Asoria is usually very busy and it can be hard to find a seat. Astoria is open late which is nice. They're open until 11 pm so it's the perfect place to stop after a movie, dinner, or bar. read more

This place is absolutely amazing, although I will say some of the pastries could be a lot with how much we're giving for that price, but it's sooo worth it. Me and my kids love coming on the weekends. I love how clean it is and but it's very minimal with seating. If you get there first you win haha! I love the service, the employees are so sweet and patient with kids and big groups. Their ice cream is delicious and the portions are HUGE. While everything LOOKED incredible, I got a box of about 6 different pastries, mini pies, etc...to bring to a dinner, and they all were "alright" not too good, but not too bad, I was just expecting them to be better. I had a terrible experience at Astoria in Royal Oak tonight. My friend and I came in well before closing, ordered our food, and simply wanted to sit down. The staff told us we couldn't -- even though several other people were clearly sitting and eating. When I asked the manager why, she said it was because they sat down before us. That makes absolutely no sense. The staff had already been rude before this even happened -- everyone was short with us and standing around chatting instead of being welcoming. We still tried to be kind and patient, but things only got worse. When I asked for a refund, the manager refused and became rude and argumentative. Totally unprofessional. I told her I'd be disputing the charge with my bank, and she even made a snarky comment under her breath. Honestly, the dessert isn't even all that for them to be acting like that. Definitely won't be coming back, and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. read more

I really enjoy Astoria! I don't go come here very often, but when I'm in RO and I have time I'll try to stop by as it's such a nice place for something sweet. There's street parking, or you can find paid parking lot/parking structure and then walk to the shop. I mainly come for some their cakes, such as a their cheese and carrot cake. Both are always delicious! In addition they sell cookies, cupcakes, cannoli, ice cream and much more. They're are a few tables inside if you'd like to sit as well. I think my only gripe may be some of the items seem a little on the higher side, but it's nothing overly outrageous. If you're in the area I recommend stopping by as Astoria really has something for everyone for your sweet tooth fix. read more

I ordered an iced caramel macchiato with extra caramel, though it didn't seem like I got the extra caramel. Still, it was pretty good for a local coffee shop. We also tried the baklava, which seemed quite good, though I'm not a connoisseur. On the other hand, the honey curl was unpleasant. The gentleman behind the counter noticed our reaction and kindly offered to replace it, which was a nice touch. We swapped it for the tiramisu, which turned out to be quite good. Overall, I would give this place another try, but l'd likely order something different. The baklava stood out as the highlight. read more

Whenever I go to dinner in downtown Royal Oak, I always try to stop at Astoria afterwards for a dessert. It's usually always pretty busy inside, but the line never takes too long. Honestly, I'm usually still deciding what to get (they have so many options) by the time someone is available to help me. Some of my go-tos at Astoria are the cannolis, coconut macaroons, and French macaroons. They always package everything so nicely, and I've never been disappointed by my selection. They have small seating areas inside, so you could either take your treat to go or sit down and enjoy it. Or, there are usually benches outside so you can enjoy your treat outside if the weather is nice. I've been tempted by the carrot cake every time I come in, but I haven't tried it yet. Every time we visit The D we like to make our last stop at Astoria. This place is a gem! Beautiful charming shop, really wonderful pastries. And wow what a selection. I've never been disappointed. You know that their quality and service is top notch when our dinning Meetup group suggested that we have a dessert only event and meet here. Too bad they have limited seating. I stock up on cheesecake and carrot cake which freeze well. The turtle candy is well worth the calories. That chocolate mousse mouse has a cookie base, lots of delicious chocolate and vanilla under that outside chocolate. You also have to love a bakery that know if you stay open late on popular nights for customers, open to 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. I bet they sell most of their ice cream, candy and baked goods to adults who love reliving their childhoods visits to the neighborhood bakery and ice cream shop. I really like this bakery. My favorite location is downtown Detroit but this location works for when I'm not near downtown. They have a wide variety of baked good, coffees, and ice cream. The available offerings are about 1/3 of the total offerings that the downtown location has. Overall, everything was delicious. We ordered 9 items to eat in house and 5-6 items to take home to enjoy. You will find everything from ice cream, pudding, baklava, cakes, pies, tarts, cookies, and donuts here. The sitting area inside is only enough for 5 couples (total of 10 patrons) so if your party can grab a spot while ordering, that would be great. The pecan turtle brownie is still my favorite and delicious here and it beats any other that I have tried from California, Arizona, Nevada, or Texas. read more

Did not like this place. Good selection but after walking away with a raspberry white chocolate cheesecake slice and a chocolate torte slice I was super underwhelmed. Neither one was good or rich or flavorful. They both tasted like mass produced baked goods. At roughly $6 a piece I would have expected better quality and I ended up super disappointed with my dessert. Even my cousin that brought me here admitted that she didn't like the desserts that we got. With that said, the place is nice on the inside and they did have a good variety of options. WOW just wow! There was so many delicious desserts and I couldn't try them all. Had the honey Curl, Napoleon, Cannoli, chocolate Cannoli and hot chocolate. The honey Curl was amazing from beginning to end. I want to say that if you've had a French cruller from a donut shop before that it's similar to that but better. The honey flavor permeates with every bite but it's not too sweet. Absolutely recommend it. The Napoleon was fantastic with crispy layers in-between the whipped cream layer on top of the custard layers underneath. Next time I'll forego the fork and knife and pick it up to eat like a sandwich. The cannolis were great being very crispy but I might say to skip the chocolate Cannoli. It was good but it was a bit more like chocolate whipped cream than that Cannoli flavor that I'm used to. The hot chocolate was gourmet. Chocolate shavings and chunks melted down into a delicious drink. Probably shouldn't have had it on 93° day. Oh Well. Wish I was in the area more often. read more

My office moved downtown and as a result, I have fewer opportunities to shop and dine in Royal Oak. One of the places I miss is Astoria, a heavenly place for sweet treats. Despite the years and despite COVID, the display cases were filled with familiar favorites. I still took my time to consider the abundance of cake slices and pastries before making my final selections. Of course, I had to have the baklava, soaked in syrup. I typically make mine with honey and butter but still enjoyed the ones here. Imagine layers upon layers of pastry dough with chopped walnuts and sticky syrup. Additionally, I managed to score the last Galaktoboureko, a pastry that reminds me of my childhood. A firm egg custard is wrapped in phyllo dough and coated is simple syrup. After just one bite, a flood of memories surfaced. Lastly, I ordered a slice of German chocolate cake with a tender crumb, topped with coconut pecan frosting. Yum! Service was lovely. read more

Used to love the place ... but tonight I pulled up at 10:36 after a concert around the block . They have the doors locked customers in there telling me they are closing early!!! It's 10:36 not 5 mins before closing and I knew exactly what I wanted . I am a regular but I promise they will never see another dime of my money !
