WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! No Cars available for "Aisle" customers. When I asked for an upgrade to a larger vehicle for better visablity, I was told they don't have any available, and that it was my responsibility to check the website to monitor this. Why would I check this if I already had a reservation? When pressed further, they offered a slightly larger vehicle (Toyota Rav 4 over a Chevy Trailblazer) but wanted to double my rental cost to $2K for the ten day rental. When I let them know how disgusting this is business practice is, I was threatened with cancelling my reservation leaving us without a car for a vacation booked over six months ago. Made reservation via American Airlines using my hard-earned points. We specifically requested a Mini-van and paid for it accordingly. However, on the print out it read something weird like Dodge Durant or van/minivan. We arrived at the ticket counter and the staff properly checked us in, but when I specifically asked about this oddity, she avoided answering and directed me to her team upstairs who gives out cars. When we got to the garage, other companies had a team member properly giving their customers a friendly Hawaiian welcome. Not National! We headed to their kiosk and had to hunt around for someone who worked there. They are clearly understaffed and poorly trained. The man who finally helped us also could not answer my question about the reserved Minivan. He tried to offer us a standard-sized SUV and claimed it satisfied what I had reserved. No way! Our family had specific reasons for reserving the van during this trip. He kept trying to get us out of the way by saying. "It will be a wait for a van". So....you didn't know we were coming? What's the point of a reservation?!?!!? Anyhow, we got passed around to a couple other staff who kept trying to play the same game and we kept insisting that we ordered a van. It took 45 minutes longer to get what we reserved. Not happy with undertrained staff who are free to hand out the wrong class of cars vs. what customers paid for. Very poor customer service and bordering on fraudulent business practices. If I didn't have to use this company to use my airline reward points, I would never have reserved with National. I urge you to avoid using them. I have much better experiences in the past at this very airport with their competitors, namely Enterprise or Budget. read more

Car battery died mid rental, spent whole day to get a replacement cause they "couldn't find" the towed car that they called in themselves. Wouldn't allow a replacement till the car "was found" in their lot. If you're willing to waste a whole day, cancel all your reservations to maybe get a replacement - nationals got you! What a great experience we had in a recent trip to Honolulu...from getting the car to dropping off it was an excellent experience. An easy walk right across the street from the Honolulu airport and their new rental car facility. When we walked up we were greeted with smiles and Aloha. When returning the car I have to mention Oliver. We arrived super early in the morning and despite how early Oliver was a welcome surprise. He was so friendly and nice. Called to ask if we could do Emerald Isle for 6 people, they said yes, just book a mid size. We did that and were told that they only had 5 person vehicles for our party of 6. Their recommendation was to cram everyone in (illegal) or just rent another car and have 2 cars... Terrible customer service with no solutions. We will NEVER rent from National in Honolulu. I was doing my due diligence on researching which car rental was best in Oahu. I usually go with Hertz, but after reading their reviews, I didn't want to risk having to wait hours for a car. With my company membership, I got a pretty good discount and loss damage waiver included. When we got off our flight, it was about 11am on a Thursday, so I thought it can't be too busy. Along with all the other rental companies at the same place, I couldn't believe how crowded it was (especially at the budget one). Thankfully, if you're a member, you go on upstairs to the fourth floor where they check you in away from the crowds. The guy helping us checked us in and even offered to upgrade us to a convertible, which was really sweet! But SF and I are both a little paranoid about car break-ins and stuff so we declined and just went in out Toyota Camry. We were in and out of there in less than 10 minutes. So...3 months ago this was a 5. I was really happy. I liked how I was treated. The employees knew me and I was greatly warmly by name. For context i rent between 4-6 cars a month, for the last 10 years or so. I like nationals east to understand loyalty program. I recommend national to people. About a month ago I tried to leave the airport in my rental and was told I was on a "do not rent" list..but the people at my local location didn't know why. I was late to work. The next day I called and found that I had gotten a traffic camera ticket 6 months ago. Nobody notified me. I asked for a copy of the ticket as it was $260. Then I was told that the ticket didn't match the car I rented..so sorry. I was happy (sort of) and asked when I could rent a car again. I was told I'd get a call in about a week. A week goes by, no call. I call. Same story, wait a week. Another week goes by..I call again, "wait a week". I was refused the opportunity to speak to a manager. I asked for the corporate office. They gave me a enterprise call center. I asked for a local office. They gave me a call center number. At this point it's not even about the money National is trying to scam me out of..I just want them to call me back. Am I crazy for wanting to be treated like a valued customer? Update: after my emailing below and calling 3 more times, the issue was resolved. No apology, no attempt to make it right..just "you can give us money again". Quick and easy car rental. Makes renting a car super painless and almost pleasant! Easy pick up. Drop off was a bit confusing until the last minute when we were about to exit the terminal and saw signs for car rental drop off. Wish the directions on the email were a bit more thorough on how to find drop off location. Car was clean enough. Some areas were missed (sunscreen on the car handles inside and outside, on the back seats, a rogue chip between the passenger seat and car console), but not a dealbreaker. Surprised I had a great experience with them here. Service - Gotta go up on the elevator as there office is setup on the parking lot (Kinda weird). Service was great at pick up and drop off. Car - Clean newer car with no issues, probably could have been cleaned a bit better but wasn't too bad. Prices - Going rate with the crazy rates going up allover. Access - Hawaii has rentals right in front of the terminal that makes it super convenient for drop off or pick up. Overall good experience and would rent again. read more

I made a reservation 2 months ago for a vehicle. I called and confirmed two days prior to arrival. I did let them know at the time that the flight I was on would come in at 8:30pm which is right before closing. I was told they would wait and gave me their direct number. Yesterday, I called when I departed the airport to informed them there was a slight delay but that I would be there. They took down my flight information. I called again when I was on the flight to let them know we would be touching down on 10 mins and I would run over to them. By this point it was 9:10pm. The lady laughed and told me they leave at 9:15pm. I told her that I had called to confirm and was told they would wait. She just repeated that they left at 9:15pm. I called again when I started heading that way but no one answered. I got to the 4th floor garage by 9:25pm and no one was there. I went to Sixt and Noemi was so nice and got me into a bigger vehicle for the same price as National. Update: I emailed and was asked for a phone number. I provided my number and received and email back. I am uploading a screenshot of that. So, although, the policy is to stay 2 hours after a flight that has been delayed, they did NOT honor this. My flight was scheduled to arrive at 8:52pm but was slightly delayed (they had flight info) which caused me to get to the parking garage by 9:25pm (I bypassed the checked bags to get there faster). My flight info was also included on my reservation. Unprofessional on their part! read more

First time using National and was very impressed. It didn't start out that way, but the Station Manager, Kathleen Papst, got engaged and went above and beyond to make sure my needs were met. As many of these car rental places do, when I came to pick up my car, it was not what I reserved. I wanted a small compact car but was given some ginormous vehicle. I as not happy. I selected National specifically because they had a small compact available. Because I signed up for their loyalty program, they upgraded me - but I did not want to be upgraded! To make it worse, the car they gave me had a hatch leaving the trunk completely exposed. For safety reasons, I don't want items in the trunk visible, especially if the car is at the beach or in a parking garage. Kathleen saw that I was unhappy with the car selection, and after hearing the rationale, she called down to the floor that was not for loyalty members, and had them bring a small car to me. She even took it a step further and gave me credit for a full tank of gas to make up for the swap of the car and the amount of time it took to get it resolved. Kathleen was empowered and resolved my issue right then and there. When I returned the vehicle, the process was quick and efficient. The customer service agent, Jack Sintait, handled everything expeditiously and I was on my way. National just won a new customer! Thank you! read more

I booked my reservation online 4 days ago asking for a small pickup Nissan Frontier or similar. I show up. The lady says we have a full size Dodge Ram. I say, I reserved a small truck due to parking at the hotel. I literally wait almost an hour for them to bring my truck up. I rent from Alamo usually and rent 12 times a year due to work. This is the first and last time I will rent from National. You've been warned. The manager also tells me...well we have a truck but you don't want it. This was my first time renting a car without my husband. He usually handles all of these things because he is Exec Elite. Anyway, we took the shuttle to the location right outside of the airport. Walked out to the cars and a pleasant young lady welcomed us and invited us to choose a car from a select row. We chose a Toyota Camry which was clean and well appointed. Enjoyed the car with no issues for 3-1/2 days. I always feel uncomfortable with the return of the vehicle but easy directions, greeted by another pleasant young lady got my luggage and caught the shuttle. Frustrating. Never make the same mistake I did. It will cost you $300. The car rental itself was great. Service was great up until the end. I'm new to car renting. When I came to pick up the car everyone was professional and it was an easy experience. Where I made a mistake is that I didn't take pictures or video of the car. Because of how professional everyone was and how easy the experience was, I automatically assumed the car was in great shape... I was wrong. There were numerous scratches and dents and bumps on the car. I noticed it as soon as I went to Arrival at Delta and picked up my wife. Another mistake I made was I noticed the marks and bumps and still didn't take pictures of them, assuming once again, 'oh maybe they documented everything'. I was dead wrong I came back to return the car and they pointed out everything and of course it was my luck that I didn't document anything... I talked to the National Staff members to see if there was anyway around it and they said they don't know and that they'll have the damage control people look at it and see what they determine. Sure enough, I sign the paper and then I get a charge a week later. So frustrating... The most frustrating part about everything is that my family and I were home most of the time because my newborn and my wife were too tired to go out and about. I wish I didn't have this experience or else I would rate 5 stars, recommend it to my family and friends, and continue using the services. This will most likely be my first and last experience through National. read more

I tried to stay calm, searched my bag and was on the phone with National corporate when I got a call from an 808 number - it was local National and they had my wallet!! With several companies to choose from, we picked National out of luck, but knew we made the right choice when we were warmly greeted and were on our way quickly and efficiently. Really bad customer service! We arrived to Honolulu at 9:15 and they close at 9:00 and they had told me that they would wait for me. Had to take a Lyft ride to the hotel. I called National Customer Service and the representative told me that she would put notes and send a message to the branch to contact me first thing in the morning and not to cancel my reservation. I never received a call from the branch. I spoke to customer service again and was told that my reservation was canceled and to call the branch. I have been calling for 3 hours with no answer. Spoke to enterprise and they said they would send an urgent message to the manager to contact me but still waiting. I was going to make a new reservation but they don't have vehicles so now my family and I are in Hawaii with no transportation. This really sucks!! read more

i use this location frequently and overall, I am good with it. Some things to note: 1. This is not a pick out your car and roll location. You need to check in with the folks at the kiosk in the lot. not preferred, but that's the deal. No special treatment for emerald or emerald execs. 2. Its right across from the main terminal. Don't take the shuttle, you will hate yourself. Walk to the north end of the terminal, cross the street, you are there. 3. returning can be tricky...make sure you follow the signs and stay in the correct lanes or you will be doing laps around the terminal. read more

We booked our trip through Priceline and decided to get a rental car last minute (meaning: while waiting for our HNL plane at Sea-Tac). This is the company that accepted our offer (which was much lower than the price our friends paid for their rental), so we got our rental car from them. I don't remember what kind of car we ended up with, but it was definitely bigger than I was expecting, and it worked fine the whole time. I think it also seemed a bit more powerful than the "economy car" we got from some other company when we visited Los Angeles earlier this year. We arrived in Honolulu around midnight, so we were pleasantly surprised by the friendly lady at the National counter. She gave us useful tips like "don't leave anything in the car overnight" and "consider leaving the car unlocked in the bad parts of the island" (which she pointed out on a map). Apparently it's normal for people to mess with cars, but they don't steal 'em often. She also recommended a market and a luau for us to check out. The car worked well the whole time and nobody decided to break into it. Woo hoo! The only issues we ever had were (two) people that parked against our car bumper (different days) and left them there. We took a bunch of pictures that demonstrated that we reached the spots first (the other cars weren't really in spots), but they didn't end up being needed, which was nice. Yay, National! read more
