It didn't have the fuel efficiency if a compact car and it was much larger than I expected. The window visibility was lacking so I returned it. The clerk said my only other choice was a Kio with a boxy build. It was actually a compact SUV but I snatched it as it was better than the first car in many ways. Well, I can't complain too much since I only paid $40/ day but it wasn't fuel efficient.

I have traveled a lot for work/pleasure and know how to navigate rental car agencies pretty well. Every once in a while they get one over me, especially recent with the electric vehicle push. I also almost always avoid off airport rentals as a rule. Given the price and the glowing reviews I thought I would give Lucky Owl a shot. I'm very glad I did. The pickup process was super easy, just walked across the street from the southwest baggage claim where the pickup spot #4 was designated. Made the call and they were there rather quick. At the counter there was no sales push or tactics, they just verified my ID and CC then handed me the keys. Their rules were clearly laid out next to the window. They took photos of the cars condition and encouraged me to do the same. I also received the exact car stated on my reservation. No issues with the car for the 2 weeks we were there. Someone mentioned you blend in with their cars as a local, I don't know how but it did feel that way, hahaha. I especially liked the rubber floor mats which made cleaning easy. My one recommendation would be a trunk/hatch rubber mat. I know they are much harder to come by, but it would help with sandy beach gear. Speaking of, they even offer to rent beach gear! My airbnb came with some, but its great to know for next time. Drop off was just as easy as pickup. Their rental terms mention excess sand has a fee and there is a Texaco close to their location with vacuums. I wasn't sure if we had reached the "excess" level but why not treat the car with respect and clean up after yourself since Lucky Owl treated us well. When I got back they took a couple photos of the condition just like the pickup and had the shuttle ready to take me to the airport. No question I will be renting from here again next time in Oahu! They also have some friendly cats to greet you.

We had a mishap with the key fob not working while we were at the beach on the east side of the…read moreisland. When we realized it wasn't working, we immediately opened up the fob and found old looking corrosion inside around the battery area. We put a new battery in it and left it open to dry out (if moisture had gotten in it). After troubleshooting to no avail, I called the company and they sent someone out charging a $75 "roadside assistance fee" where a representative brought out a spare key fob. Unfortunately, the replacement fob did not start the car (or even unlock/lock the car). The representative was friendly, but not knowledgeable on other troubleshooting steps to get us back on the road. With the replacement fob taken apart (to swap/replace the battery) the original fob eventually started the car. We even tested it further by turning off and on the car a few times to make sure the old fob was working again. We then drove the vehicle to our next destination, and when we went to leave the car wouldn't start again... we made the most of it and had dinner while further drying out the original fob to see if that would help. In the meantime the company sent a replacement vehicle (at no additional charge). When the rep went to start the original car, it stated right away. The following day, I received a voicemail to go over the additional replacement fob and roadside assistance charges. The voicemail said to reference the email and/or call back for questions. I never received the email after 10 minutes of checking, and then I got a large credit card notification; $350 for the damaged key and $75 for the roadside assistance. I didn't appreciate being charged without being talked to first. When I immediately called back to politely ask some clarifying questions, the person on the phone was very rude and raised his voice to me and my wife. Given that the original fob appeared to have prior water damage and the fact that it did start the car (after drying out, replacing the battery) it was disappointing to be charged $425 for something that may, or may not, have been our fault. And to then be yelled at for asking questions. At the end of the day, the whole ordeal cost us valuable vacation time, added stress, and drastically altered our plans. The car rental itself was affordable but the first car we ended up with was older and a little dingy.

The lady said not to worry, she had other vehicles available at no additional charge. I ended up getting an upgrade- BMW X5! Not to shabby! Overall, I had a great experience! I was in and out of SIXT rental within 15 minutes from arriving! Staff were friendly, quick and efficient, not to mention accommodating! It's located upstairs in the parking garage adjacent to the airport (very convenient). The car itself was in mint condition, clean and practically smelled brand new! Plenty of legroom and luggage space. We definitely felt like we were driving in style around the island! So thankful to SIXT and their staff for kickstarting our vacation on a happy note! It's true what they say, having your own set of wheels eliminates the stress of waiting for rideshares or adhering to rigid public transit schedules- Mahalo SIXT!

He came out of nowhere to tell me, aggressively, why they need to check an id that had been scanned multiple times previously. I don't understand what even happened! Because I was confused and upset about being wrongfully attacked, I asked him to clarify his accusation. He escalated by repeatedly telling me, "you can't even admit that you said it" and I said, yes, because I don't ! He would not engage with me or my husband in coming to a meaningful understanding. My husband and two teenage children both said they did not hear me say this and came to my defense. He would not admit he could have misheard. He shut me down and repeated that I was denying it and that I couldn't admit that I "cursed" at his employee. He ended with sarcastically saying, "why don't you leave and enjoy your vacation." I don't say the word crap, because it's a crap curse word. I use better, more adult curse words. If I was frustrated, the room would know. What manager is trained to escalate? This person should not be in a front facing position. I'm kinda floored that he chooses to be in customer service, because if he is starting g a fight with a not that annoyed middle aged lady, how does he handle an enraged man? I doubt he would have had this interaction with a man. I wasn't even mad, it came out of nowhere I think he must have heard my kids or another customer say something 'cause it's not what happened and my whole family was witness. I'm sure everything is recorded - check the footage. You're an angry man, Andrew, shame on you. Sixt has been made aware of the situation and I do really hope they watch the security footage. I had a reservation for April 20 with a 12:00 PM pickup and had already checked in online the night before, but that did not seem to help at all. After picking up my luggage, I got in line at the Dollar counter around 12:30 PM, with at least 60 people ahead of me. It took about two hours just to reach the service counter. After that, I was given a card and told to go downstairs to the first-level pickup area, where I had to wait another hour before the car was ready. The whole process felt like Beetlejuice car rental purgatory -- slow, surreal, and completely uncaring. Dollar/Thrifty may be cheaper compared to other rental companies, but be prepared to be ignored and stand in a mind-numbing line for three hours or eternity, whichever ends first. No apology, no explanation, and no sense of urgency from the staff at any point. Others before and after me were clearly going through the same painful experience. Meanwhile, I did not see the same long lines or wait times at other rental counters in the HNL CONRAC. Someday we may all have to wait in line at purgatory... so you might as well start practicing your patience at the Dollar HNL CONRAC. This was a terrible and frustrating way to start a visit to Honolulu.

Why would I check this if I already had a reservation? When pressed further, they offered a slightly larger vehicle (Toyota Rav 4 over a Chevy Trailblazer) but wanted to double my rental cost to $2K for the ten day rental. When I let them know how disgusting this is business practice is, I was threatened with cancelling my reservation leaving us without a car for a vacation booked over six months ago. Here's the best part...we had an accident in this rental car due to poor visability! NEVER AGAIN, National Car Rental!!!!
