I have recently become quite the fan of Natural Grocers. It is such a surprising lil' shop! The surface appearance is standard crunchy granola health food store, but it is so much more than that. Here are a couple reasons for my love: They carry Mary's Chicken, and on a recent visit, I was able to stock up on half price whole birds as they were marked down. They still had several days before the "use by" date, and I just stuck them in the freezer. Score! In fact, their clearance overall is great! This location has shelving along the back wall for bath and body, vitamin, and pantry/dry goods, as well as a portion in the refrigerated section. Most reduced products are at least half price, and always still usable, though may need to be consumed within a few days. NG is one of only a few local spots to carry Cucina coconut yogurt, basically not-too-sweet (vegan!) panna cotta in the most beautiful packaging. And it tastes just as beautiful as it looks! They have every variety of Honey Mama bars, one of my favorite "healthy" sources of chocolate. Along those same lines, their candy selection is unexpectedly varied, even featuring local makers like Solstice, Chocolate Conspiracy, and Amano. I dig Unreal's coconut treats and JoJo's chocolate bars, too! Produce, while limited, often features specialty or rare offerings like mandarinquats, meyer lemons, dried mushrooms, and more. They sell Portland Bee Balm, the most moisturizing and cute wood-wrapped lip balm in all the land (and the rose flavor is heavenly!) Employees are super friendly and very sweet. Prices are in league with other health food stores, though some items are lower than anywhere else! As I said, it's a surprising spot. I encourage you to spend at least twenty minutes just wandering about without anything specific in mind. I think you will be pleased! read more

Soul food is that incredible stuff, often associated with the South, that sticks to your ribs and is made by someone just known to you as mama. It's good for your soul, but maybe not good for your blood vessels. Me? I like soul food. I like that fried chicken, those collard greens, that mac n' cheese. Now, that's not what Natural Grocers is about. As the name indicates, it's a grocery store that focuses on natural products, eschews the chemical-laden processed foods, and dials in on natural, organic, and more recognizable forms of food. But it's also good for the soul. I read a few books many years ago that changed the way I eat, and over the last several years I've endeavored to eat more cleanly. I do like me a good treat, but I've cut out a lot of excess carbs (but won't say no to a great baked good) and a lot of sugars (but let's not get crazy, see also: ice cream) and had a lot more focus on ingredients. I love to cook, and bake, and have become more picky about what ingredients I use. So when a place like this makes it easier for me to find good ingredients, I'm pretty stoked. And they go it all in abbreviated grocery store format. There are frozen/fridge goods that they have packed from bulk, cold drinks, lots of kinds of flours, home and household goods, and fresh produce, to name a few. In the back is an entire section filled with supplements, powders, pills, and stuff that I don't fully get into but if you do, you'll appreciate it. There's a also a small section of books, mainly about health and cooking. There was a small clearance section in the back on several shelving unites against the wall and the deals were pretty good. I also like that they have a classroom upstairs with a kitchen. They host classes from time to time, and you can probably fit 30 people in there. Parking was easy for me, but it's a small lot and on normal hours I think it probably gets jammed up. But if you live in the area and want those non-GMO, lesser-chemicaled, solid ingredients, it's a good option. read more

I was extremely excited to hear that another Health food market was opening in the old location of Whole Foods. So I made a point to stop in this past weekend, and enjoyed my experience. I am very into eating delicious, healthy, non-GMO foods, and this market fits perfectly into these categories. They have a fairly nice selection of produce items, but their vitamin/supplements section is out of control! One part of the store that I quickly gravitated to is along the back wall - an area where they have pre-made, refrigerated items; specifically: energy bites, protein bars, etc. I picked up some Cacao Goji energy bites, and they are DELICIOUS. The bag was priced per pound, and cost me around $4.50. I felt it to be a little pricey, but definitely worth not having to make them myself. I will make a point to come back to this store often, if only for their in house made refrigerated energy bites. YUM. An aspect of the store that is very prevalent are their ample samples [ha ha] of all sorts of random items. I had some Mexican chocolate, and Vanilla Wafers on one isle, and along another, they had free samples of soaps, popcorn, olive oils, teas, etc. Also, check out their seating area - they are stocked with hot water and teas for your sipping pleasure [all free]. From what I've learned, Natural Grocers offers a variety of health-related, and food classes for the public - that are also all free! Upon my asking, we were brought up to their kitchen area where the classes are held. It was very cute, and I totally plan on taking classes here in the future! They also have Nutritional Health Coaches in the store, which I find to be pretty damn awesome. When I went in the first time, it felt like the cashiers were still trying to understand how to work everything - but I have faith that this will improve the older the store gets. [My second visit proved this!] The check out lines are peculiar, however. They do not leave a lot of space in which to stand, and you can only easily enter them by going down certain isles. So disappointed that this store is no longer taking the Covid-19 pandemic seriously. I started shopping here regularly at the beginning of the pandemic because it is never crowded & the hygiene measures were IMPRESSIVE. So I discovered that I liked their products. I have been doing a lot of my shopping here in the last year & half. HOWEVER, hygiene practices have deteriorated. Most of employees do no wear masks. When I ask a cashier to put a mask on, he is usually pleasant about it but can't find a mask & winds up asking someone else with a mask to check me out. Interestingly, the female cashiers are more likely to be wearing masks. Additionally, there is no longer hand sanitizer or any way to sanitize shopping carts in the entry way. I need to rethink my shopping habits. read more

Best grocery store around!! Being gluten free, dairy free, & pescatarian my options for food can be quit limiting. Natural Grocers has all of the food I haven't been able to find in an alternative form to dairy or gluten. The stores are so clean and organized it makes shopping super enjoyable and easy. I've never been in a grocery store that had so many options for gluten free, or vegan people. I was amazed. I normally feel like the minority being gluten free and vegan but here that wasn't the case at all. I felt like there were more items accommodating to me than anywhere else I've shopped including other big chains like Whole Foods. Thank you Natural Grocers! By far my favorite grocery store, and I go to them all! Very friendly, down to earth people work here. They care about their customers and are always there to help. Being a graduate student, I love how NG always has great deals on their organic and artisan items. Makes me feel good that I can afford the best quality products at a very reasonable price. NG has a variety of unique brands and products, so if you like trying new things, there's that. In summation: NG is not too big, not too small, but just right for me! read more

Just moved back to Utah for a bit and wanted to try out all of the natural grocery stores. I knew this was here but I never gave it a chance until now. It's a cute place! Very well organized, my only issue is that the bulk foods section is all prepackaged, and as someone who's trying to minimize their waste (especially plastic consumption), I found this to be quite a let down. They actually had prepackaged protein/energy balls which was cool, but why is everything in plastic??? :( Reasonable prices, but I like to use my own containers for my bulk items, so I probably won't shop here much. I will say their dates are more affordable here (I'm an avid protein ball chef)! read more

Fantastic selection of natural and organic foods at great prices. Natural Grocers keeps prices down by eliminating food waste from elaborate deli, bakery, cheese and butcher counters like most grocery stores. All produce is organic. I appreciate that I can be in and out quickly and avoid a lot of the expensive temptations that grab me when I'm shopping at Whole Foods.
