designs showing 1/5" variance, yet other details like 18 pavers vs 15, fence design not correct
    Kevin E.

We hired Nature Designs Landscaping for what was supposed to be a $100K+ backyard project. Unfortunately, what we got instead was a series of mistakes. Here are just the highlights: 1. Paid $6,800 for a 3D design we never actually received. 2. Bids were vague and non-itemized, making cost-cutting impossible - here's your bid that came in $200,000 over your budget with 29 items you wanted but we wont tell you what each item costs...so good luck trimming it... 3. Stepping stone installation didn't match the plans, dismissed with an exact quote from the owner Steve "we are not designing rockets here." 4. A 50' Keystone retaining wall was built 2 feet in the wrong place, costing us 100 sq ft of yard. 5. Patio trellis cover post was moved incorrectly, and workers inexplicably cut off decorative beam tails. 6. Unlicensed electrical work caused two of our home's fuses to blow; I had to fix the spa wiring myself. 7. Crew buried a sewer cleanout under dirt and a paver until I caught it. 8. Bobcat damaged stamped concrete walkway; denied until I showed Ring video proof. 9. Cable rail gate were poorly built and had to be replaced by another company. 10. Workers painted woodwork with random wrong "brown" paint on two different occasions using two different variants of "brown" without even asking us if we had some left over correct brown paint. 11. BBQ tile and window sill tiling had to be redone multiple times because instructions weren't followed. 12. Crew secretly severed our Cat6 security/gate/internet cable, spliced it with the wrong wire, taped it, stuffed it into a conduit, and buried it -- never telling us. 13. "Pass-through window" was a $12 DIY-quality screen that couldn't be removed, opened, or repaired. Each of these issues is explained in detail below for anyone who wants to understand the full scope of how this project went wrong: ________________________________________ Detailed Issues 1. $6,800 design fee The only 3D plan presented was a $250K-$300K design -- nearly 3x our budget. We never received a usable 3D plan reflecting what we settled on. 2. Non-itemized bids Nature Designs does not provide detailed, itemized bids. This meant we had no way of knowing how to reduce costs intelligently. We were left hacking items off blindly, never knowing what impact it had on the final number. To trim the budget even more, we allowed the workers to use the restroom facilities inside our home to avoid paying for a porta-potty for 4 months. However, we are unsure if we even received a credit for the porta-potty. 3. Stepping stones Plans showed 15 pairs; 18 were installed. When questioned, the owner brushed it off with "we are not designing rockets here", so it's not that exact. 4. Retaining wall A 50' Keystone wall was installed two feet closer to the house than designed, costing us ~100 sq ft of usable yard. The owner admitted his project manager sometimes makes changes "without even telling him." 5. Trellis We approved moving a patio deck trellis post 8". Instead, it was moved too far and redone incorrectly. Workers also inexplicably cut off decorative beam tails, permanently ruining symmetry. No fix was offered. 6. Unlicensed electrical They performed electrical work without a licensed electrician. I had to troubleshoot and fix it myself. 7. Sewer cleanout Crew uncovered a sewer cleanout, then buried it under dirt and a paver the next day. Only when I showed photo proof did they admit the mistake and cut an access hole in a paver above the cleanout location. 8. Bobcat damage Their bobcat damaged a stamped concrete walkway. The project manager denied responsibility until I showed Ring camera footage. 9. Cable rail fence/gate They drilled cable holes unevenly and without a template causing delays while they patched the holes. We had to hire a fencing company to replace the gate. 10. Paint mismatch Instead of asking us for the correct paint, the crew twice bought random "brown" paints and applied them -- all mismatched. 11. Tile work The BBQ edges and window sill tile had to be redone multiple times because the tiler ignored instructions. 12. Cat6 cable cover-up One worker (several weeks into the project) severed a Cat6 cable that controlled security, gate, and internet causing multiple unexplained connection issues for weeks. Instead of repairing it properly, they spliced, taped it, stuffed it into a conduit, and buried it -- never saying a word. * Electrical tape around a severed Cat6 line is not a recognized or code-compliant repair, particularly for outdoor use where waterproof connections are required. * The fact that this splice was concealed suggests intent to cover up the damage rather than properly address it. * The CSLB considers concealment of damage and substandard work as grounds for disciplinary action. 13. Pass-through window We asked for a pass-through window. What we got was a $12 DIY-quality screen shoved in a track. It couldn't be removed, cleaned, repaired, or opened.

Holy smokes these people work hard!!…read more I had a mess in the front yard, but the back was insane. Ficus trees that were huge and dense (couldn't walk under or see through) with one encroaching on the house. Palms that were sprouting little palms growing where they shouldn't, and weeds...omigosh, the weeds were just depressing in how quickly they sprouted up during one rain, and they were _everywhere_. Plus, in several places, the irrigation was broken. Just looking at this mess was stressful. Mr. Martinez showed how the dense growth of the ficus -- no sunlight, no air -- caused the leaves to be mossy and generally unhealthy. He made other helpful observations during the initial walk-through as well. In the end, his crew needed only two full days (one day plus two half-days) to clean it all up. ALL the weeds: gone...including the ones that tried to masquerade as trees. All the bushes: neatly trimmed. The big ficus trees: neatly cut back and airy (by an arborist). The palms cut back. (And the grossly-overgrown saguaro palms in front, removed.) Dead trees removed. Mulch and wood chips in front. Plus, being that Mr. Martinez is a general contractor, they got a painter to paint the shutters requested by the HOA some time ago. Just a stunning amount of work. Two days. And now the back is almost like a Zen garden (minus the sand and rake) in the feeling of calm and peace that it inspires. Not cheap. But holy smokes are they good.

It wasn't a complex job, but the the site was a giant mess, with a lot of overgrowth and debris. Michael's bid was well within my budget, and he was able to schedule the job for a time that was convenient for me. He also offered clear explanations about why the work would best be done a certain way. When it came to the work itself, his crew was outstanding. They arrived on time, kept on schedule, and cleaned up the site at the end of every work day. I have never seen such an organized, well managed job site. They were truly exemplary in all respects, but especially in regards to the quality of their work. When it comes time to replace my fence, my patio cover, or my driveway, I will definitely call Michael.

In fact, his proposal included everything needed to properly prepare and establish a healthy lawn, while other estimates we received were significantly more expensive and included less. Michael recommended St. Augustine grass because we have a large dog, and within a week, his team was ready to start the project. He explained the entire process ahead of time and gave me detailed guidance about the watering schedule, mowing schedule, and recommended equipment for maintaining the new lawn. The crew was amazing--efficient, professional, polite, and extremely hardworking. Carlos, the crew lead, was especially impressive. He is calm, knowledgeable, and very detail-oriented. He listened carefully to every concern I had and made sure everything was addressed properly. The project was completed ahead of schedule, and they even installed a fence that we provided to protect the new lawn from foot traffic and our dog while it gets established. The finished lawn looks absolutely beautiful. The new sprinkler system is quiet, efficient, and works perfectly. They used new, quality materials and clearly did not cut corners anywhere in the project. After comparing several companies and estimates, I am very happy that we chose Pacific Landscaping and Maintenance. We received a better, more complete project at a very competitive price. Michael, Carlos, and the entire crew exceeded our expectations. I highly recommend them!

Small yard? No worries, Brookside has your back!…read more If you buy new construction these days you can pretty much kiss that yard space goodbye. Finding ourselves in this situation, we needed a team that could transform our "cozy" yard into a comfortable yet elevated outdoor living space. Enter Brookside. You know that feeling when you hire someone to do a big home project and hope that everything goes well, but you kind of hold your breath in the event that something goes awry? That won't happen with Brookside. From our initial call to the thanks-for-everything completion hand shake, they didn't skip a beat. Everything went SO smooth and communication was on point the entire time. Brookside is a well oiled machine. The conversations between us, Brooks and Jenny, and the crew were fluid the entire time and no one was ever in the dark about the plan. On top of that, everyone was so personable and professional. These guys are hard workers and leave your space clean and organized at the end of every day. We were so happy with how our space turned out. Their attention to detail is amazing, and their design concept was truly everything we wanted. Even though we have a small yard, they were able to make it look so much larger by moving things around and creating a better flow. It seriously looks like we added square footage. All of the plants that they chose for our yard are so beautiful and unique. Everyone that comes by wants to know what each plant is called because they aren't the very common yard plants that everyone has...they are so interesting! They chose the foliage specifically for what they knew would grow well in our area and with the sunlight for each side of the house. Thoughtfulness went into every aspect of each item they added...from the plants, to the wood and stone for the built in bbq, the special market lights (that are really unique and fun), all the way to the treated concrete. Everything looks like a step above! The work process was easy, and the crews that showed up every day were gracious, kind, friendly and hard working. Over the weeks we got to know the workers, and it was a sad day when it finished and we knew they would not be showing up again every morning. Even our 5 year old knew their names and would announce to us each day who had shown up in the morning. Jenny and Brooks were also very friendly and kind, and were a joy to work with. Such a great team. I have already been showing off their hard work to our neighbors, who are very impressed with the amazing results! Hopefully they will be in our neighborhood working again soon!
