I cancelled service after 5 months of disappointment and watching my garden get worse with plants I'd cared for successfully myself dying. There is one person who deals with irrigation, we never had changes to irrigation except for one adjustment made on a whim to decrease watering in July. This inevitably led to plants dying. People who came to the house to do the work left weeds to grow to 3ft despite weekly visits. They were unclear what were weeds and what were plants. We hired Nature Designs Landscaping for what was supposed to be a $100K+ backyard project. Unfortunately, what we got instead was a series of mistakes. Here are just the highlights: 1. Paid $6,800 for a 3D design we never actually received. 2. Bids were vague and non-itemized, making cost-cutting impossible - here's your bid that came in $200,000 over your budget with 29 items you wanted but we wont tell you what each item costs...so good luck trimming it... 3. Stepping stone installation didn't match the plans, dismissed with an exact quote from the owner Steve "we are not designing rockets here." 4. A 50' Keystone retaining wall was built 2 feet in the wrong place, costing us 100 sq ft of yard. 5. Patio trellis cover post was moved incorrectly, and workers inexplicably cut off decorative beam tails. 6. Unlicensed electrical work caused two of our home's fuses to blow; I had to fix the spa wiring myself. 7. Crew buried a sewer cleanout under dirt and a paver until I caught it. 8. Bobcat damaged stamped concrete walkway; denied until I showed Ring video proof. 9. Cable rail gate were poorly built and had to be replaced by another company. 10. Workers painted woodwork with random wrong "brown" paint on two different occasions using two different variants of "brown" without even asking us if we had some left over correct brown paint. 11. BBQ tile and window sill tiling had to be redone multiple times because instructions weren't followed. 12. Crew secretly severed our Cat6 security/gate/internet cable, spliced it with the wrong wire, taped it, stuffed it into a conduit, and buried it -- never telling us. 13. "Pass-through window" was a $12 DIY-quality screen that couldn't be removed, opened, or repaired. Each of these issues is explained in detail below for anyone who wants to understand the full scope of how this project went wrong: ________________________________________ Detailed Issues 1. $6,800 design fee The only 3D plan presented was a $250K-$300K design -- nearly 3x our budget. We never received a usable 3D plan reflecting what we settled on. 2. Non-itemized bids Nature Designs does not provide detailed, itemized bids. This meant we had no way of knowing how to reduce costs intelligently. We were left hacking items off blindly, never knowing what impact it had on the final number. To trim the budget even more, we allowed the workers to use the restroom facilities inside our home to avoid paying for a porta-potty for 4 months. However, we are unsure if we even received a credit for the porta-potty. 3. Stepping stones Plans showed 15 pairs; 18 were installed. When questioned, the owner brushed it off with "we are not designing rockets here", so it's not that exact. 4. Retaining wall A 50' Keystone wall was installed two feet closer to the house than designed, costing us ~100 sq ft of usable yard. The owner admitted his project manager sometimes makes changes "without even telling him." 5. Trellis We approved moving a patio deck trellis post 8". Instead, it was moved too far and redone incorrectly. Workers also inexplicably cut off decorative beam tails, permanently ruining symmetry. No fix was offered. 6. Unlicensed electrical They performed electrical work without a licensed electrician. I had to troubleshoot and fix it myself. 7. Sewer cleanout Crew uncovered a sewer cleanout, then buried it under dirt and a paver the next day. Only when I showed photo proof did they admit the mistake and cut an access hole in a paver above the cleanout location. 8. Bobcat damage Their bobcat damaged a stamped concrete walkway. The project manager denied responsibility until I showed Ring camera footage. 9. Cable rail fence/gate They drilled cable holes unevenly and without a template causing delays while they patched the holes. We had to hire a fencing company to replace the gate. 10. Paint mismatch Instead of asking us for the correct paint, the crew twice bought random "brown" paints and applied them -- all mismatched. 11. Tile work The BBQ edges and window sill tile had to be redone multiple times because the tiler ignored instructions. 12. Cat6 cable cover-up One worker (several weeks into the project) severed a Cat6 cable that controlled security, gate, and internet causing multiple unexplained connection issues for weeks. Instead of repairing it properly, they spliced, taped it, stuffed it into a conduit, and buried it -- never saying a word. * Electrical tape around a severed Cat6 line is not a recognized or code-compliant repair, particularly for outdoor use where waterproof connections are required. * The fact that this splice was concealed suggests intent to cover up the damage rather than properly address it. * The CSLB considers concealment of damage and substandard work as grounds for disciplinary action. 13. Pass-through window We asked for a pass-through window. What we got was a $12 DIY-quality screen shoved in a track. It couldn't be removed, cleaned, repaired, or opened. read more

I had been with 3 other companies for my landscape maintenance and had persistent problems with multiple issues. I lost many plants to infestations , irrigation issues and poor maintenance. It was a true pleasure working with Nature Designs Landscaping. They just completed a redesign of our front and backyards and we couldn't be happier with the process as well as the result! We contracted with Nature Designs Landscaping to completely redesign our front and rear landscaping. In addition we had them redesign our outdoor kitchen. Working with Doug from Nature Designs during the design phase was terrific. He listened to our feedback and came up with a design we loved. I am so disappointed with their service. I just called in to see whether they can help us to design and work on our front and back yard. And Doug called me the same day and told me they are all booked for the entire year. And if my budget is under $100k , they won't be able to provide service to me. So I asked what 100k can provide us? He didn't answer me. Then I explained to him we are at the early stage and trying to reach out to the landscape designers to help us. He directly told me if I can't find anyone meet our need, then call him again. I was so surprised for their rude response, so I asked him is it because they are too busy right now, and when is the best time to check with him later on. He said they don't just go out to quote, they provide the landscape design, and they charge $150/hour, and since we need front and back yard work, it will be around $7000-$8000 dollars just for design! I called them because of the google review and I am so disappointed to get treated like this. I have no idea whether he had a bad day or not. Never met a person so rude. It doesn't matter how good they are, if they can't give a potential customer proper phone call to start with, I won't trust to have a good relationship with them later on. read more

We would like to commend Nature Designs on theirr fine work in transforming our backyard from its tired and outdated look into a delightful place for us to relax with family and friends. This was a full-scale job requiring the demolishing an existing in- ground swimming pool/spa and then grading, drainage, concrete pad for the new spa, installing pavers, two pergolas, a deck for the above-ground spa, adding a new garden area and complete landscaping front and back. The results are fantastic! We were particularly pleased with Nature Designs' work ethics, the quality of their workers, subcontractors, foremen and particularly the project manager, Claudia Kuepper. Staying on schedule and complying with all City of Encinitas requirements were handled impeccably. The most important part of this great work was it was "on schedule" and "on budget," which is something very rare in today's contractors' market where all of the objectives and requirements are completed as contracted. Our project with Nature Designs definitely had its up and downs, but it ended on the upswing for sure! Nature Designs did not have complete control of some of the problems we had, because the interaction between and with the Endless Pool product they installed creates a second step. They however, were undeterred, and worked very hard to solve some difficult problems. The installation on our property was difficult, and they stuck with the incredible challenge to make several changes to make sure it worked. I thank them for that! At the end of the day, there were some irrigation problems caused by an installation issue, that caused some plants to die. The follow through is where and what every customer has to land on with their final satisfaction. Nature Designs won't let you down, they will work hard to make sure all your expectations are met. My family had the pleasure of working with Doug Dilworth on a complete exterior landscape design completed in spring of 2022. This included new hardscape, driveway, trash enclosure and the addition of an outdoor fireplace. The finish work, execution, plant selection and customer service was outstanding from start to finish and we could not be more pleased with the finished result. My gas fire pit was redone and was supposed to be filled with small black rocks. It was first filled with red porous rock; when I pointed out the error it was replaced with the small black rocks originally agreed upon - or so I thought. In reality the red rocks were covered with dirt and then a thin layer of black rock was scattered on top. The dirt rendered the fire pit unusable. Many of the original shrubs have come up again - oleander, India hawthorn, etc. - further confirmation they never turned over the ground or actually removed the original plants. I was taken to the cleaners, folks, and calls to the company have been completely obstructed by the telephone receptionist who has blocked any contact with the owner, which means a lawsuit is next on the agenda. read more

I asked Steve at Nature Designs Landscape to help me turn a tired looking 27-year old slope above my pool into something my wife and I could be proud of again. His crew cleared the slope of the old ground cover and spread soil amendment based on the results of his soil test analysis. While planting the slope, the employees were courteous and punctual and left my yard clean at the end of the day. After several weeks, I noticed some of the new plants looked like they were struggling. When I mentioned this to Steve, he came out and replaced them at no additional cost. I worked closely with Nature Designs for two years. By the end of the second year, I noticed my plants beginning to yellow and die. When I asked the manager Dana why it they were like that, her response was: "That's what they do!" The truth was, they needed water! Another time, when I asked her why it was taking so long to do a planting, she half-jokingly replied: "The more expensive accounts, get first priority!" Later asking her about it, she said that she never said that. Really?? I could not believe the lack of professionalism this company has. The ONE irrigation specialist who handles up to 70 houses on HIS OWN, doesn't even know what he is doing. I had to hire another company to fix his complete wrong doing. He hooked up the wrong gauge wire to three valves....the wire melted. DO NOT have your garden looked at by this company! NO ONE including Steve the owner wants to even be in this work. We had a great experience with Nature Design while renovating our backyard. We updated hardscape, landscape, built an outdoor kitchen & fire pit. We worked with Carson, Alicia and Joel throughout our project and they are best in class with process, ideation & communication. What I love most is they support you from the design phase until long after your project is complete. During design phase Carson gave great feedback on where best to place a fire pit so that while entertaining you didn't have guests too far from the other socializing areas. Something we would never have thought about. During our project we experienced road blocks that the team was great about working through with us (kitchen needed to be reworked on the fly due to unforeseen sink size). After the project we had issues with a paver sealant giving us trouble and the team immediately came out & reworked for us. Months after the project we have naturally had a few plants that didn't make it and they quickly swapped them out. Nature Designs is one of the best companies we have worked with. From the beginning of our landscape project to the final details, everything was top quality! Jay Thomas, our Project Manager, worked with us through each step. He was always available through emails, texting, and phone calls and we felt as if we were his only client. He, and the crew that came to our home, were professional, courteous, and hard-working. They paid attention to the details, from the original design, to small changes that presented itself during the destruction and construction, to the final inspection that our City signed off on. They left our yard clean and secure during the project, which I appreciated. My children were never in danger of tools being left out and I was not worried about my dog getting out, as they put up a small, temporary fence at the end of each work day, until my new fence and gate were installed. They were always on time each day, took their lunch breaks on the work-site, and left at the end of their work day, never before. They all put in a full-day's work. I could hear the crew talking and laughing as they worked, which told me that they truly enjoy working with each other, but never did I see anyone slacking off. Even the City parking enforcement officer, who patrols our neighborhood near the college campus here, commented to me one day toward the end of our project that Nature Designs has done a great job. They did everything as according to the law. Putting cones out when necessary, obeying the City's overnight parking laws, and cleaning up after themselves, down to shoveling the street's gutters! I rarely write reviews, but my thoroughly positive experience with Nature Designs now deserves my enthusiastic effort. I have built out 4 backyards in San Diego, and this experience has been the best by far...even to the point of being really enjoyable instead of stressful! The end product pool/spa/BBQ/hardscape/landscape/lighting is absolutely spectacular, highly functional, and is the subject of exceptional praise from friends and neighbors. As just one of many examples of their exceptional work, the vanishing edges on both the pool and spa (over 50' of it) have absolutely no high or low spots...the water flows perfectly even! So, how did we get here? The overall team approach at Nature Designs and their use of their own employees for most of the work, including both the pool and landscaping (instead of a parade of anonymous sub-contractors), is very unique and efficient. I want to personally thank Carson (Project Manager) and Joel (Job Site Superintendent) for their never-ending attention to detail and customer satisfaction. I surely tested their patience with some of my detailed requests, but they never wavered and were so pleasant to deal with. I started the planning/quoting process with three highly recommended candidate contractors, and it became quickly apparent that Nature Designs was a cut above the others. They took the time through a series of site visits to really understand my wants and needs (and the differences between them), as well as my concerns (including budgetary), even taking me to see other jobs they did to help refine the design. After the contract was signed, their great service became even better (not always the case with others!) as we worked through various details, even visiting some vendors together to help choose materials. As work progressed, we encountered the inevitable challenges in such a complex project, and each time Nature Designs acted as a truly knowledgeable partner to come up with viable solutions. Anybody who has done such a project before learns to fear the words "change order", as many contractors use this opportunity to jack up their pricing after coming in with a low original bid. In each case here, Nature Designs provided fair pricing and detailed documentation for change orders that allowed me to make the changes I really wanted without feeling taken advantage of, or having to regret not making those changes for years afterwards. There were also a number of times during the project where I noticed something not quite right, and they almost always implemented a fix before I could even point it out to them, let alone having to argue about the issue which often had been my previous experience with other contractors. Even at the end of the project getting down to the very last punch list item, their energy and attention to detail did not falter one bit...again a very unusual and refreshing experience! Nature Designs may not initially appear to be the cheapest option out there, but they are very fair and reasonable throughout the process making it extremely cost effective in the end. After my initial review, the owner Steve came out to meet with me to answer all of the questions related to my pool filter light issue. In addition he took time to answer all of my other pool questions including heater, desirable water level, drainage and refill method, and basic diagnosis method for telling if the system is working or not. Overall Steve showed a lot of enthusiasm and passion for his company's work. After his visit, my maintenance issues are resolved and I am still impressed by their design work, so a 5-star rating is warranted. read more
