I have heard extremely bad things about this hospital, but so far I've had decent experiences overall. The wait in the ER wasn't too bad (for an ER), so that was a plus. I WILL say the front desk could have definitely been more professional at the ER. Other than that, the doctors and nurses were great. I had one ER nurse in particular who was an angel sent from heaven. I was very overwhelmed when I was there, and she talked to me so kindly and helped calm my nerves. I came in because i thought i had a UTI, i ended up waiting for 5 hours just to be seen when i got my lab results within 20 mins on the app. If your gonna leave patients in a room alone for 5 hours atleast have someone check on them. I've gone to the naval hospital quite often sadly expecting change every time, plus they make it IMPOSSIBLE to be seen anywhere else, I had gallstones over a year ago maybe 2 now. It was so severely infected i went into the closet hospital the night i had several gallstone attacks and i couldn't be seen i sat there for 10 hours. and no i'm not exaggerating, id been taken to triage and that's it. I left and my husband and i went to the naval because after that attack stopped i had another intense one. The naval hospital sent me home on high grade ibuprofen and wanted to schedule me out by 2 weeks for a surgery, My gallbladder became so heavily infected due to a stone blocking a duct. i proceeded to go into the ER and they finally moved my surgery up! getting there was so difficult I then recently have gone into the er due to a miscarriage. I sat in the ER for 2-3 hours, i understand how i was not seen first, they want to focus on the more severe patients which is understandable. but then again not when i was in the waiting room i overheard a man come in with Hydraulic Fluid in his eyes, he told the lady it had already been in his eyes for about 10-15 minutes. It took him an additional 30-40 to go to triage. and within the rest of my 2-3 hours i sat there i never saw him get seen by a doctor. His eyes were puffy and inflamed. I practically thought abt asking if he needed help from my husband and i with maybe washing his eyes in the sink or somewhere because it was insane that out of all patients he wasn't taken back. As well as a newborn had been brought in for falling and hitting the back of her head. again baby sat there for 2 hours and never got seen. With how many times i've been in the ER i hear so many people around while i'm in my room just talking. no one actually working, and on top of that ive never had a clear diagnosis from this hospital. i've been misdiagnosed damn near every time and 2/3 of the times it was serious, i could and was on my way to becoming sepsis. i've gone to several other locations to get a second and third opinion and the naval has always been wrong. They will push medical coercion on to you, fear mongering, and horrible bed side manners. i've been pushed to do procedures or tests i'm not interested in for months, told horrible things will happen if i do not, and the most disgusting bed side manners DO NOT COME HERE If you value your life or your children's life do not come here. Go anywhere else EDIT: as well as do not confirm your pregnancy here. i've had 2 separate times where i've taken tests morning of going in and after and they're positive doesn't matter the brand, or anything hell i even had ultrasound photos showing an obvious pregnancy and Naval hospital as always said "your test came back negative" while i'm carrying 13 positive tests in a ziploc in my bag from the previous days and that day along with sonograms and i'm yet "not pregnant"? i struggle with losing babies often so this isn't new but i can most definitely tell you i was pregnant the two times they denied i was. As well as they will not refer to your baby as such they refused to with me and only said things like "zygote, embryo" yet he had a name and was a boy. Idc what other people's opinions are as doctors let's have SOME manners and compassion for your patients because it's utterly disgusting how much compassion they don't have read more

Surprised to see this hospital had a 2.5 rating. It's a beautiful hospital with nice renovations. On the fourth floor there's a literal life sized zen garden to relax. They have a cafeteria that my dad used to take me and my siblings to while active duty. I can't speak to other services but I've been to the ER recently and had a pleasant experience as far as ERs go. It's not as inundated with people as other ERs but the process was smooth. Was there for about 2 hours. All the staff members were friendly and had strong bedside manner. Was able to get meds same day as they have a 24 hour pharmacy afterwards. Just make sure you bring discharge orders. read more

While great care and service once you get in, check in and followup are a nightmare. My father pulled out his catheter so the ambulance brought him in. I was five minutes behind but the check in person was unable to find him in the database refused to take his military ID card and told me that since he was civilian we would recieve a bill for service. I had to get loud to get her to input his military ID and then she mumbled that he was in the system, and told me to have a seat. Jump ahead to monday, the spare urine bag they gave had to be used so I went back to emergency to find out where I could get more. I was clear that I wanted information not a hand out but the woman at the desk refused to look him up, refused to flag the original doctor who installed the catheter and told me my father needs to do a followup with his doctor if he wants a urine bag. I asked again where to get one, she repeated that that was on his doctor to follow up on this. The unwillingness to access the database or flag the physician or even give suggestions where we could get another urine bag added hours to this issue. His doctor is annoyed that they (emergency) sent us across town instead of just giving us a bag to tide us over while giving us type and where we can get more. read more

Although this new hospital is a lot smaller than the one by the lake, they still offer the same degree of good service. I admit the pharmacy can have long wait times but that's usually when the waiting room is jam packed with people. Their radiology department won't answer their phones! I've been placed on hold for 3 hours; I finally got through by contacting Patient Services. Where they do shine, however, is in their various services. I've been fortunate that I've encountered nothing but the most professional, respectful, and friendly staff. Could it be that I'm an older female veteran? I'm friendly and approachable and they might pick up on it. I've been appreciative of their treatment. It's a nice benefit and I'm a grateful veteran. A shout out to the baby-faced Lt. My only complaint is with records. I got paroled in 2018 after 16yrs and somehow records has my husband's rank assigned to me. I've tried to change it multiple times and they said they have done so. I suppose the upside is I'm being seen in clinic rather than being referred off base. I was terrified of having a surgical procedure but honestly, it was as great of an experience as it could be considering. Everyone was very respectful, caring, and thorough every step of the way. (Shout out to Ortho!) Parking is easy, especially if you enter on the housing side and not from Vandergrift. There's ample DP/DV parking! I consider myself fortunate; between here at the VA San Diego Health Care System, I'm pretty well taken care of. (Unless VA refers me out, that's a nightmare.) read more

I hones wish I could use different words to describe it but ill keep this professional. myself and a friend went to the ER so he could be seen for a serious poison oak rash that became infected and spread to his face and it took the staff 4 hours just to see him. the all the doctor told him is he needs medication so we went over to the pharmacy and when we got there we where informed that the doctor gave the wrong prescription and had to wait over an hour for that to he fixed. terrible on all parts. Nobody wants to go to the Emergency Room. Unfortunately that was the case for me yesterday. I have had multiple strange symptoms for the last several months but yesterday, feeling so ill with the accumulation of these things, I had no choice but to go to find some answers out. I spent the better part of the day here. I found the staff to be very caring and considerate from start to finish. I was very scared when I went. I saw multiple doctors/neurologist. Everyone took the time to listen and pay attention. I felt nothing but honest concern and a calming presence. I really have no complaints at all. The hospital is clean and pleasant to be in. It seems well run and organized. They seem progressive and have everything state of the art. I think if you have to go to the emergency room (hopefully, you do not) then I think you are in good hands here. The pharmacy ( was quiet when I went) is very nice and the person I dealt with was so caring and answered all my questions. read more

The lack of care when I was here last time was 0/10 bad experience and I had to get transferred to another hospital from there because they couldn't do anything to help me with my pain and the quality had been going downhill and Rady's is better and has better care than slow Camp Pendleton ER I've been going there forever and this is the one time that I will go out of my way to go to Balboa the office has been nice just not the people who work there like the newbe nurse that put in my IV one time and didn't go nice and slow on me just placed it in all quick and put it in my left arm first and that didn't get any blood out and tried it on my right arm and that got blood out and I still have the bruise from it and this is what it looks like in the picture and I will not come out to their ER ever again 0/10 horrible experience this time and I do like my doctor that's there and also I do not recommend this Go to Balboa they have amazing care and they are really nice and Balboa gets 5 stars This Hospital really gets 0 but I had to post a star read more

Came here at 830PM 12/15. my husband was running a high fever & developed hives all over his hands and body + a sore throat. We told staff that he tested negative for covid right before coming. We were more worried it was some sort of monkeypox, shingles or HFMD, soemthing contagious... HENCE the reason we came to the EMERGENCY ROOM, and NOT just urgent care. We waited 1 hr in the waiting room for the front desk to call him up & take his vitals. Then another 30 mins for staff to call out his name & 3 others. 3 hours goes by.. Not a single "thank you for waiting.. so sorry for the wait, etc." NO acknowledgement. Meanwhile my husbands fever started to spike, so I walk around trying to get ANYONE's attention. Seemed like only 4 people were working this entire EMERGENCY ROOM. We caught a lady in the hallway asking how much longer do you think it will take (its been 3 hrs waiting) and she said, "if you guys wait in your room, I can ask" So we walk back into the room, my husbands hives are progressing .. still no word - Another HOUR goes by. So my husband goes to the staff and asks again, and the same girl we asked was just sitting there like "oh yeah that's the one" like she didnt even bother to check back in w/ him or anything!!! (4hrs later) Doctor finally comes in around 1:30AM. he says monkey pox would only be present if my husband has been partaking in wild promiscuous activities.." - basically implying you can only get if if you're homosexual. SMH!!! I was extremely in disbelief and disgusted that kind of unprofessional behavior. He basically shrugged it off and sent us home with tylenol. No allergy test or clear diagnosis. Thanks??? For nothing??? This place was horrendous. We left the hospital at 2:30AM!!! You're better off going to a civillian urgent care or praying for your symptoms to clear up on their own. read more

ER experience has never been good here. The front receptionist staff have terrible bedside manner. Normally I wouldn't care, but because I was taking my 4 year old here, i'm pissed. As the short woman at the front took my daughter's vitals she was completely quiet and rude the whole time. My daughter politely thanked her and the lady only gave her a dirty look in return. Please tell me how my four year old has better manners than the Marine at the front desk. Seriously, learn some people skills, you're working in healthcare with sick CHILDREN. Ridiculous. read more

If your need is emergency care I know of no other place in CA where you will receive the professional, progressive, and timely attention than at Pendleton or Balboa Naval Hospitals. Of course, the emergency room is triaged. You may have to wait to be seen if others are facing life threatening issues and yours is not as medically urgent. The lab, pharmacy, and clinic services function well.The Navy oncology department is current in its approach and treatments. The intensive care unit is modern and staffed with trained seasoned professionals. If you are admitted to a room, you will experience an excellent level of care. So, yes. If you qualify for care there, go. I highly recommend the Navy medical facilities. They are among the best in the nation. read more

*This review is strictly for Labor and Delivery + the Multi-Service Ward* Labor and Delivery staff - you guys are amazing, hands down. from the moment I walked in with contractions 5 minutes apart, getting checked into a room, receiving my epidural, changing nurses throughout the 24 hour period I was admitted into the deliver room, updated and checked on constantly, to finally getting to deliver my sweet girl... the doctors, nurses, corpsman, and the rest of the general staff made my time in L&D one to remember. They all really made my experience non-stressful, surprisingly relaxing, and made sure myself, my family (the three who accompanied me for the birth and the ones that visited after), and my newborn baby was always taken care of. Seriously, I can't say enough about my experience on this floor - i'm glad it was a good one! So thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! Multi-Service Ward: Wow. Just wow. So, my sweet girl, who's only 4 days old at this point, got jaundice, sadly :( so we were admitted here. we walked up to the front desk and got checked into our room in a timely fashion. All our doctors, nurses, and corpsman have all been males which I think is so neat! They have all been ridiculously helpful, informative, and very nice to my mom, myself, and the little baby. They made sure we were taken care of given that this overnight stay was unexpected. The staff provided us with an extra recliner chair, pillows, blankets, socks, toothbrush, toothpaste, and more. They are working hard to make sure my little girl gets well enough for us to be released asap. I can't thank them enough for being so great! I'm glad to say that as a military spouse and new mother, my experiences with the naval hospital have always been pleasant and nothing to complain about (which I see is very rare here). read more

When I asked them if I do indeed have a concussion, they briefly said yes and gave me no instructions on how to treat a concussion. This is a comment about the reserved parking spaces for the new Commanding Officer, her guest, along with several of the officers at the hospital. On the second floor of the parking building, parking spaces for disabled parking spaces are located along the wall. If you park at the last parking space for the disabled it is quite a walk to the elevator. Because of the nature of the hospital, the disabled parking spaces are typically filled most of the time. So, it is possible for those disabled patients who come to the hospital would have to traverse a significant distance within the parking building. Then, these disabled patients realize that there are parking spaces right near the elevator which are clearly marked that they are for the Commanding Officer and other command representatives. The space closest to the elevator is marked as "CO's Guest" and usually this space is open. These parking spaces used to be for Fuel Efficient Vehicles; however, since the arrival of the new Commanding Officer, it seems that these spaces have been reassigned. As a patient of this facility, it makes me wonder if the Commanding Officer positions herself above those patients who comes to this military treatment facility for the care that they need. With my knowledge, Navy Medicine serves those who serve the country, therefore it is not the place for the top of the command to place themselves above their patients. It is sad to see the new Commanding Officer securing her own space before improving service to the patrons of the facility. Additionally, the comment box that used to be by the hospital entrance/exit has been removed and anyone who has comment must use the form that requires them to provide his/her (spouse's) rank and SS# and hand it to the person in the office; personal information. Because of the nature of the military rank system, I feel that anyone whose rank is not high enough might not be able to voice their true opinion. read more

Over a year ago I was experiencing these really bad infections and would go to the ER here multiple times. I didn't know how to stop them but the meds they prescribed me seemed to work until I would get another infection. I ended up going there maybe 6 times and the last time I went the nurses and doctor's recognized me and were looking at me like "again???" I didn't want to be there AGAIN but I didn't know what to do so they had some other doctor come in and she was being passive aggressive and condescending towards me and asked me where I work?? I didn't know why that was relevant at all. I couldn't believe that last interaction I had with the doctor there. I get that I was going there a lot but for them to make me feel that way was very upsetting and I'm still upset about it. Ever since then I haven't gone back there to the ER I would just deal with my problem at home :| Also it seems that every single time I go to family medicine to get a depo shot that the person checking me in doesn't know what the heck depo is and asks their coworker in front of me. I was once sent to immunizations for a depo shot??? I was very confused as to why they did that because I go to family medicine specifically for my birth control. This is just a little thing that happens every time. I did have to wait almost an hour to get a shot that took 3 mins to get. I get they were backed up with other patients but I don't think I should've been there that long the whole interaction and shot from the nurse or doctor took 3 mins. read more

I don't know what's going on lately in family practice but it is a hot mess there. My first appointment was for my daughter it was at 235 and my name didn't get called at all. Then some guy told me that they can't find my doctor anywhere and left. Still waiting.. the MA finally grabs me to do my daughters vitals. The fact that they had me waiting that long and couldn't find the doctor is ridiculous. My second appointment was at 255. I was waiting in the room for an HOUR for the doctor and still no one comes to check on me or give me any updates on where the doctor is. So I left because it was almost 4 and that's when they close. The medical assistants and corpsmen are extremely rude and unprofessional. The Laboratory department is horrible. All the staff look so grumpy all the time and are rude for no reason. You tell them what you are there for and they look at you like you are dumb. They made me get a ticket for something that takes 30 seconds and I was told by a nurse on the phone that I didn't need to grab one. So I got a ticket and no joke 5 seconds later they call my number. The only reason why I gave this review 2 stars is because I give one star to Doctor Dubuc. She is no longer there but she was the best doctor I have ever had. She was always on time and sometimes early. She would make sure the MA and corpsmen we're doing their job. And she remembers little things about you from like months ago. She really cares about her patients which is amazing and very hard to find with military doctors. Family Practice needs to get there stuff together. And laboratory needs to lighten up and not be grumps. read more

While vacationing at Del Mar Beach my spouse came down with Covid. He's 64 with diabetes and really wasn't feeling good at all. 2 years ago he had Covid and was sick for 3 months. The Naval Hospital ER had his vitals, labs, physical exam done within an hour which is excellent for an ED. His antiviral meds along with other meds were delivered to him in the ED and we were all taken care of in 90 min. Every single person was kind, polite, respectful and professional appearing. They worked together like a team and everyone had pride in how they do their jobs. They treated my husband and myself so kindly! After 3 doses of the Paxlovid, he's feeling much better and avoiding any complications with his medical issues. I'm so relieved!! Our visit was on 7/30. Thank you Naval Hospital!! read more

This is for the labor and delivery ward, the staff team was by far the best, I felt safe and comfortable when I went into labor with my daughter and it was a smooth process the entire time.
