I'm currently experiencing transportation issues getting to my appointment, and an Uber from where I live would cost around $90. I called to reschedule, but no one was answering. When I finally did get through to someone, they were rude over the phone and told me I couldn't reschedule and would have to cancel my appointment instead. I understand this is the VA, and I know people can have difficult days, but patients are often struggling too. A little understanding and professionalism can go a long way. Customer service and compassion toward veterans definitely need improvement. read more

I went to the Dental Walkin clinic because I fell on concrete and cracked my tooth in half. When I arrived before 1030am, I was ignored by the receptionist. She didn't acknowledge me she just walked to the back and then came back and asked what I needed. After telling her, she told me to come back at 0700 the next morning. First of all, I had to get a driver who was only available on Mondays. They denied me care after driving that far, I was saddened by the behavior. I was asked about receiving community care but basically talked out it. I didn't receive any care, nor did I go back to the office the next day. I tried to contact them again to get community care after being refused care, but they refused to assist me. I was able to find a dentist who pulled my tooth as it had split in half. As a disabled veteran I have gotten use to the slights of care, and the behaviors. Fortunately, the primary care and specialist providers are 5 stars all the way and are sincerely appreciated. Thank Goodness for the real professionals and heroes of the VA system. Sending prayers for all veterans who have to endure this behavior as if veterans are a bother. God Bless! read more

Because... Of course Dr. Ottaka left. All the good practitioners tend to leave after 2-4yrs. This indicates, to me, that there's a lot of bureaucratic BS within the system. (I mean, duh. Right?) So let's see, I've had Dr. Garcia (2015-2018) and then a floater PA until they hired Dr. Ottaka (2019-2022). Now we have the same floater (he's actually a nice dude and I'm shocked he's still around) until about October when they're expecting a new hire. We shall see. I'm still happy with this location, but as a whole, the VA needs to work on employee retention. That's one way to truly take care of veterans. Stability and familiarity with our care providers can really make an impact--good, or bad if it's volatile. I'm just thankful Dr. Richardson in Mental Health hasn't left.... I swear to God.... Only a governmental institution could stay this incompetent for so long without being forced to close All I needed was a letter showing that I am not receiving any benefits. This is a simple one page letter. The VA's website should be able to provide this through their portal once logged in. But instead I had to speak to several people over the phone only to be told to make an in-person appointment which I had today. I drove here from San Diego only to be told that "sorry, the provider couldn't make it in today so we had to cancel." Incompetence of this magnitude has implications beyond mere inconvenience. I've been to the Optometry clinic here. The VA issues eyeglasses to veterans who need them. I didn't find out until recently, but many of the eyeglass frames are made in China. This explains why 3 pairs of my eyeglass frames (issued by another VA facility over the years) have broken with gentle use. I came here to see if they could repair my most recent pair of broken glasses. Instead, Gina ordered me a replacement frame and said they'd be here in about 2 weeks. Instead, they arrived after only several days, it seems. The eyeglass repair hours are supposed to start at 8 a.m. but I arrived early to check in to pick up my new frames. Rafael called me before 8 a.m. then proceeded to install my old lenses into my new frames. I asked him about silicone nose pieces because the plastic nose pieces slip off of my face, especially when I'm sweating. He promptly installed silicone nose pieces, cleaned my glasses, and gave me a case for the glasses. All this was free. Please promote Rafael and Gina and give them a raise. read more

Clinics I have received care from... Lab...can do hard sticks well and in a timely manner Dental...reception is very good or very poor. Hygienists are snobby and rude. Medical Clinic...Male doctor gave me unwanted breast exam for lung issue. A female doctor said to me "thank God you don't have any children" Very Poor. Xray...fast and competent moved limbs without causing too much pain to fracture Mental Health...Receptionists are very nice. One therapist kept calling me the wrong name and tried to treat me for wrong illness for 3 sessions. Didn't believe me when I said that wasn't me. Dr Kral was very funny and helpful. Dr Richardson gives you the impression he is a VET and understands you, but I do not think he is. WATCH WHAT YOU SAY to him. He has a fist full of tickets to the looney bin and he likes to use them. Had one Nurse Practitioner say that patients who take medication for mental issues are drug addicts. Social Workers in this clinic are friendly and helpful. Easy to talk to. read more

I am an Army War Gulf War Veteran, and this clinic is by far the best i've ever visited. La Jolla is good as well, but this location is very personable and they do a great job. Kudos to Jesse as the VSO, Brian Drew in Mental Health, Natalie Garcia as my primary! Never have, I seen such a distain for the people in which they supposedly serve. First off the person that was helping me couldn't answer a single question I had. I couldn't even get my question out without getting talked over or dismissed. While sitting in the waiting room, the people at the front desk have nothing nice to say about anybody coming in there, and how much they dislike the veteran population bitching about whatever from not wanting to wear masked to wait times. Needed to do lab work for an upcoming appointment. Security guard at the front asks the typical "do you have any flulike symptoms". Should have lied. I've had a sore throat for about 2 weeks which has been getting better and is almost gone. 3 negative travel related COVID tests in past 10 days. VA security guards not doctors or nurses are in charge of deciding if you are well enough to visit Oceanside VA Clinic. I you're a GS15 running a major regional clinic you can simply delegate important screening decisions to a wannabe cop and call it "treatment". read more

Now that my case is being managed by a provider, things are flowing smoothly. One inconvenience / convenience depending how you look at it is the option to have your Rxs mailed or you need to go pick them up in La Jolla. I haven't opted for the mail option but was advised by the provider that it was approximately 3 business days delivery time. The front desk staff is very nice and so are the staff in other clinics that I've met with, (about 6 in total). I drove 30 minutes and came to get a verification for my drivers license and a VA ID card and like the website said. I went to my nearest CVSO office which was this address. I went to the front desk and a lady had me wait. We waited for over an hour and 50 minutes with my 3 year old and all of the doors were shut. I finally called the number and a man answered and said they don't do that today- I have to wait till Tuesday. My problem with this: The website said "just visit your cvso office". When I arrived the lady just had me sit down and wait. She left the building and told me someone would come out. We waited almost 2 hours and had to call from my cell phone and he told me in 2 seconds what I should have been told the second I walked in. read more

Denied my physical therapy after failing to provide cohesive care relative to outside physical therapist's plan and recommendations. Switched my doctor twice in the last year, both times cutting off my contracted healthcare services. Absolutely no remorse for their administrative disruption of my care. Calling the "service" this facility provides "health care" is outright fraud. They absolutely do not care. If you care for your own health avoid this type of chicanery and this VA facility at all cost. They will destroy your medical record and enter fraudulent information on your behalf. read more

Just switched from the Mission Valley clinic to this one. It's smaller and doesn't have everything MV does but it seems newer and it was a quick in and out; less crowded. I like the setup with the front desk. Just walk in and they direct you where to go. Easy peasy. I will update when I have more services done. read more

Not breaking any trends set by stereotypical poorly managed government agencies in direct service of the public. In my particular case this was represented by the lab whose closing time is advertised as 4 pm, but at least today, decided to close at least a little bit early. May have only been 4 minutes, but the reason why I attempted to get over there before 4 pm for a blood test was because I was confident I'd make it there before 4, if only by a few minutes. This is not my 1st incident of time related inconsistencies. That being said I don't really have any major complaints about the actual medical care, but just like the dmv, the general apathy or even contempt for the individuals they are tasked to serve whether deliberate or just a symptom of the system at large only magnifies the near zero accountability. After getting turned away because "NO one under 18 is allowed" and missing a very important appointment. I came back less than 2 weeks later and a mom had her child with her in the clinic. I have never experienced such unorganized chaos. I live 20 minutes away from this facility and I have lost count of how many instances I have wasted time showing up for scheduled appointments when they turn me away at the counter because my appointment had been "cancelled." Well Lord knows I haven't picked up the phone to cancel appointments recently and if I did I wouldn't be at the desk at all, so would it kill the staff to actually make veterans aware of changes to these schedules?! I didn't realize simple phone calls were this difficult to make. I think it's about time the entire building is gutted of pitifully rude front desk clerks and refreshed with people who actually want to be there and do their job. I was VERY nervous about going to the VA for my first appointment because of all the horror stories that you hear about the VA in general. My doctors appt was at 9 am, they called me the day before to advise me to come in early to do some blood work. I also had to take my VIC photo. I really thought I would be there all day because that's what you hear about the VA. I went in at 8 am and I was done with my blood work by 8:15. The lab tech was kind of lacking personality but he didn't bruise or hurt me when he drew blood so points for him. The ladies at the welcome desk were very helpful and made sure to follow up with me every now and then while I was waiting to take a photo for my ID. The ID process was pretty quick. The gentleman did a quick review of my benefits and gave me a folder with need to know info and phone numbers. I was done with them and ready to head up stairs for my 9 am with about 15 min to spare. The nurse (Susan) was awesome. Great bedside manner and listened to what I had to say and answered all my questions. The doctor (also Susan) was great as well and made me feel very comfortable. She did a quick physical, asked about aches and pains and asked the typical questions for a physical. I was on my way home by 9:45 am. Overall, I felt like these people care. That's all you really want when you walk into a scary situation to begin with (I HATE hospitals). I feel more comfortable now that I finally did it. Hopefully my future visits will go just as well. I have an appointment at the La Jolla location next month. Lets just hope that they have the same standards and level of customer service that the Oceanside VA does. Thanks again! read more

I am a caregiver for my 90 year old Dad and am so happy with the Oceanside facility. Great location, very helpful from admin staff, nurses, Doctors, up to and including even the patients who seem much happier and less stressed. After many a trip to LaJolla where parking is impossible, the drive is long, it always seems everyone is so very busy and the wait to schedule an appointment is way to long. When you do arrive for the appointment (especially the dentist) that too is a very long wait. My opinion for what it is worth is as follows...I believe through no fault of their own the staff is very busy and do the best that they can considering the amount of patients that come through the LaJolla facility. My Dad is now a patient of Home Based Primary Care where they come to the house for his checkups, blood and urine and whatever else might come up. I can't say enough about the staff that has come to the house to care for him. I want to thank all of them personally...Lori, Sue, Laura, Dr. Hanson, Dr. Steiner and the excellent social worker Carissa. Thank you ladies from the bottom of my heart, what a team... I moved to Palm Springs just over six months ago from San Diego. I had nothing but positive experiences using VA medical care in San Diego. When I moved to Palm Springs I got set-up with the VA Clinic in Palm Desert. On April 15th I had a bad fall and I knew right away I had a bad leg injury. I called the Palm Desert VA clinic and they had me to go a local urgent care for X-rays. The X-rays came back showing a bad fracture, and the doctor at the urgent care stated that I should let the VA know that I should be seen quickly by orthopedics as they thought I would require surgery due to the severity of the fracture. I contacted the Palm Desert VA clinic and they said they couldn't help me as they needed the X-rays. The urgent care center had sent me home with the X-rays on a CD. I wasn't able to bring them to the VA Clinic as I was unable to drive. The following day a friend of mine dropped the CD off at the clinic. For lots of bureacratic reasons the VA Clinic was unable to get my appointment with orthopedics. Finally Friday the 18th rolled around, and I was not getting any help, and very little communication. I was in a lot of pain, didn't have a cast on, and had not seen orthopedics at that point. After a long weekend of having much pain, I called the VA Clinic and I still could not be seen by orthopedics. At that point I had no choice but to see a provider outside of the VA. I called Eisenhower Desert Orthopedics and they saw me the same day. They validated what the urgent care had stated, I would need surgery. I was scheduled for surgery of that week, April 23rd. Eisenhower Medical took very good care of me. I had a plate put in my leg with six screws. Had I not gone outside of the VA I would still be waiting to be seen, risking a potential permanent disability. I now have a large medical bill due to the fact that the VA Clinic did not see any sense of urgency with my fracture, forcing me to take care of the problem outside of the system. I have talked to nurses at the VA Clinic, and a supervisor. Every time we talked I got many excuses why it was taking so long to be seen. Basically they stated that because they are a small clinic I could not expect to be seen in a timely matter even though I had a severe fracture. I have contacted the White House VA hotline to file a complain. I will no longer use the Palm Desert VA clinic, even for routine exams. I have no confidence in this VA Clinic. They totally let me down, and in the process this has cost me a small fortune. I do give kudos to the Eisenhower Orthopedic Center as they saw the sense or urgency and acted quickly to take care of me. read more

Dr Bell is my primary care physician and an asset to the Veterans Administration. She is attentive, knowledgeable and trustworthy. Most grateful for someone that cares. The nursing staff that support her add to her ability to provide such great care. Thank you to all of you for keeping me healthy. I also want to thank Dr. Ho from the GI services for helping me sort out my care plan for future care. It is obvious that he cares about me and my health. Let me say our voice is all we have to promote change and help guide proper care. I find the staff I mentioned to be the gold standard which all should strive to achieve and I feel I was fortunate to have both of them providing me care. read more

San Diego is packed with vets, so there should be no surprise on wait times. Everyone in the VA are constantly working if not with a patient, then with a lot of paperwork they need to catch up on, or maybe going through "hoops" to help a patient. Sure it's frustrating having to wait for something that may seem like it should have been a simple "Is this something I should sorry about? No? Ok. Thank you" Just keep in mind that these services ARE FREE, and that alone is awesomeness. There's always parking, but you'll never find more parking spaces for handicapped like here. We good in with appointment within a week, Dr Lee is patient, informative, and takes the time to set most of everything you require up. We had a good experience. read more

This place is the DMV of health care. No one here helps you with anything. All they do is bounce you around from person to person and all those people do is give you a number to call because I can only assume their fingers are broken. No one is ever available for anything but to make you an appointment for your appointment. You people are absolutely worthless and completely unhelpful to veterans. read more

I was lucky to get a fantastic, good and kind doctor (she is actually one of the best and is too good to be working there), the problem is that she is misrepresented by a poor, lazy and rude front desk clerk woman and lazy nursing staff.
