We had such a wonderful stay at Hotel Del Monte in Monterrey! From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel welcomed and taken care of. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and had a warm charm that made it easy to relax after a day of exploring the city. One of the highlights of our stay was how the hotel carried such a unique atmosphere and history. It wasn't just a place to sleep--it felt like part of the adventure. Between the ocean views, cozy spaces, and local touches, it really captured the spirit of Monterrey. And then there were the ghost stories. Whether you're a believer or just love a good tale, they add an extra layer of fun and mystery to the stay. If you're someone that believes (or not), go to the front desk and ask for the "book". It had 78 pages of first hand accounts of unexplained happenings from guests. We had a very small moment ourselves, while I was sharing what I uncovered about the ghosts with my significant other in the morning, suddenly the bathroom light just turned on. Nobody was around and they do run on sensors. Not a significant event but certainly was well timed. Overall, Hotel Del Monte struck the perfect balance between comfort, history, and a touch of playful spookiness. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone visiting Monterrey that has access to a military installation--especially if you're looking for more than just a hotel, but a memorable experience. read more

We stayed for a weekend wedding and got one of their queen suites. Pulling up to the building, we were both pleasantly surprised by how beautiful it was. The interior is also gorgeous, and it's amazing how well they've kept up the history of this place. We stayed in a queen suite, which was very outdated. Because of how old the buildings are, there is no A/C, which is typically fine, but we happened to be there on one of the warmest days of the year. Our room had an odd smell to it, and the amenities are pretty minimal. However, we expected this due to the age of the building. Our only negative was that we were given the first room next to the entrance and stairwell, which was not fun to hear folks stomping up and down the stairs and slamming the doors. On Friday morning, several people we knew were awoken by the "active shooter drill" announcement at 8:00am. I understand this will happen on a naval academy base, but I wish we were warned about upon check-in just so we were aware and not startled in the morning. read more

Regular traveler who likes to experience historical hotels when one is available. Unfortunately I had to move out after the first night because of ant infestation. Small black ants in bathroom, kitchenette and bed. If you do stay here remember to bring your breakfast pass to the dining room. I'd already checked out and left the pass in the room with my key. Very nice place to relax while in Monterey!! We spent $174 a night plus $20 pet fee. We like to stay here while in town checking out the beaches and scenery. The inside of the hotel main area is huge and very beautiful!! The old world style is very prominent as you see the details in the wood work, moldings, staircases and ornamentation!! AWARENESs: While in Monterey two years ago with my wife, and while visiting the Naval Postgraduate School and its facilities on the base, we happened upon the Navy Gateway Inn & Suites, which has since been renamed to the Hotel Del Monte. Seeing how nice the hotel looked, we vowed to stay here in the future if our travels ever took us back to Monterey. NARRATIVE: My family and I decided to stay overnight in Monterey from November 12 to the morning of the November 13, 2021. I originally made reservations through the DOD lodging website but was told I could have made them directly through the hotels front desk by calling them. We arrived early Friday afternoon and only one of the two rooms I reserved was ready so, we decided to drop our bags in the ready room then, hop back into the car and drive to Fishermans Wharf to take in the sights. After returning to the hotel around 4 pm, we were informed my second room was good to go. SCENE: Hotel Del Monte is located on the grounds of the Naval Postgraduate School. Access is limited to active, retired, reserve, DOD employees and both rated Disabled Veterans and their caregivers. Here's what Wikipedia has to say about Hotel Del Monte: "The Hotel Del Monte was a large resort hotel in Monterey, California, from its opening in 1880 until 1942. It was one of the finest luxury hotels in North America. During World War II, it closed and the building was leased to the United States Navy. It was first used by the Navy as a school where enlisted men spent the second, third, and fourth months of an eleven-month course being trained as electronic technicians. Later the Hotel Del Monte became the Naval Postgraduate School. Today, the building is called Herrmann Hall. It contains school administrative offices and the Navy Gateway Inns and Suites, a hotel." RECOMMENDATION(S): Hotel Del Monte is an old hotel and that evidence can be seen everywhere you look. The only suggestions I would recommend from the hotel staff is; 1. The grounds around the hotel are beautiful and beautifully kept but, they lack trash cans. The closets trash container I could find was located at the bocce ball courts, off the hotel grounds. Not even the designated smoking area, which are on the hotel grounds had a can. NGIS Monterey is the Hotel Del Monte. It is was recommended by a peer and it was an excellent historic building to stay in that also houses the Navy Postgraduate School. While walking the halls, you can view old photos of the hotel and learn about its past. The hotel offers a complimentary breakfast from 6:30 - 9:30 on the bottom floor which was much nicer than the other NGISs I have stayed at. Being in academia, it was also interesting to see the school's various departments and mini-bookstore on the first floor. This hotel was also extremely convenient to the Old Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row. The only downside is guest parking can be busy during the weekday due to staff and students coming to the building. We will definitely becoming back and recommending it to friends who are eligible to stay at the facility. read more

We stayed here for a weekend trip in June and wow what a beautiful and historical gem of a place. The buildings were gorgeous as was the ballroom and the grounds. The restaurant/bar inside was pretty decent too. We had a huge room and the cost was extremely reasonable. But also the location was fantastic!!! 10 minutes from the aquarium and 15 from Carmel!!! Gotta love the free breakfast with the Starbucks brewed coffee too! I can't wait to come back here! I just wish they had king size beds! read more

If you're able, this is a solid and reasonably priced place to stay in the middle of Monterey, close to everything this area has to offer. The facility is old (in a good way), nostalgic, and has good vibes. List of history and overall a well maintained property. While not a classy or 5 star hotel, we found the rooms to be big and accommodating. There's an on-site restaurant and a decent continental breakfast. During our stay: The base was conducting water heater maintenance, so we didn't have hot water for one night and something broke in the attic, causing water to leak down into our room, soaking some areas of the floor. I should drop to 3 stars for this, but we really liked the overall stay and will return. read more

This is a beautiful hotel and I enjoyed my week-end stay here during Memorial Day Weekend. However, as visitors connected through a retired military, we had extreme difficulty getting onto the premises due to confusion/miscommunication between security and hotel/the host booking. Our friend who booked the 3 rooms for our group was told that our names would be at the gate and all we would need would be our licenses & vehicle registration to get on site. We had also all had communications with the hotel beforehand where we gave our credit card info to reserve the rooms and everything was good to go. When we arrived at the entrance, we were all told that none of our names were on the list and that we could not enter. It took TWO HOURS to resolve the misunderstanding. Our poor invitee, the father of a bride who was getting married the next day, had to come and fill out all the paperwork AGAIN from scratch. We finally got on but it was not easy and stressful to say the least. Further, our friend got locked out of her room on the second night of our stay because her key card stopped working. When she approached the front desk, she was told that there was NO RECORD of her staying there and that the room was marked as vacant. It later appeared like someone else's name had been included on her invoice for the room.... I just want to FOREWARN anyone who has reservations through friends/family to expect potential DELAYS and bumps. On a quiet week it shouldn't be a problem. The room is spacious and made for the longer term stay, complete with a storage closet and a kitchenette with mini fridge, keurig, microwave, stovetop, a few place settings and a small eating or prep table. Meaning: Active Duty Personnel, Drilling Reservists, Retired Military, and all Dependants' of the aforesaid. That being said, if you're "not" in the military and would like to experience this semi-private location, I suggest that you hit up your military friend connections; odds are that if you know of someone who is authorized to stay at this hotel, you can reap the benefits and all of its splendor. We placed many of our relatives and out of town guests here when we had our recent wedding on campus. The price and location were winning factors in agreeing to go through the ringer with protocol of how to reserve, check in, and manage a group as large as ours coming on campus. Without the amazing and exceptional talents of Cindy and Christina at the front desk and group reservations, there is no way that this task would have been accomplished. Those two ladies get 5 stars all the way. Beyond that, the grounds are gorgeous, the rooms spacious, and if you're housed in the main building, the rooms are well maintained, and luxurious. I had a few complaints from guests staying in either side wing that they weren't entirely happy with their rooms, but for the price, they were willing to settle. I was blessed to have the Admiral 4 star's VIP ($80/night) suite at the left south most room overlooking the flagpole on the second floor, and wow, what a beautiful suite for the wedding prep, bachelorette party, and photos. That suite had a king bed with luxury linens, spacious closets, a bathroom with pretty much every amenity possible, a private hallway, a gigantic seating room, a kitchen, two TVs, reliable internet, and large windows on all outward facing walls. This hotel is the perfect mix of historic relevance, price, location, and realistically attainable elegance, all while being ensconced in the safety of a US Navy base. Once guests clear the initial background check process, future stays on campus are a breeze. I know my parents have already returned to stay since, and are planning to return soon because for $60/night, how can you possibly beat that in Monterey?! read more

Last minute trip to the Monterey Peninsula, so glad we have base privileges and was able to book here. Our standard deluxe room was perfect for our needs. A simple and clean room, providing the basics with a kitchenette at a great price. FYI- room has no air condition but does have a ceiling fan. A hidden Jewel. My family was in town for a Surprise Birthday party and I opted to book at Gateway Inns as I am retired military. They have always provided a safe clean economical room and I have always been happy with their service. However nothing could have prepared me for the facility we were staying at. A historical landmark, quiet peaceful location in the entrance to Monterey Bay and Warf area. The grounds were wonderful inside and out. Lots to take in. Plus the location for future visits in choice. Just minutes from Cannery Row, Fisherman's Warf, 17 Mile Drive, and Lovers Point. A short drive up the coast and you'll find yourself in Santa Cruz or Silicon Valley. Ideally a great jumping off location. The rooms / Suites over sized and upgraded. Very roomy and some rooms are Pet Friendly. For the little ones just outside the gate is Dennis the Menace Park, playground and lake. There is a small exchange and mobile Starbucks on site if you forgot something as well as an exchange gas station. The price is definitely right. $83 bucks a night. I did hear that prices will be going up slightly in the future but not by much. Check in time 3pm. There is a very nice pub and Restaurant on site. The Trident room. didn't get a chance to break bread there this go around but I do like options. too many other great place in town to try. Anyways thought I share this new found Jewel. I've experienced things that go bump in the night here at the Hotel Del Monte. A yelp friend, Kelly B informed me that locals have experienced sightings and the hotel has had not one but two tragic fires. It's grandeur, history and catastrophes makes it a real shoe-in for supernatural experiences. If 'ghosts' is not your thing ~ what about $70 for a suite? The price can't be beat. This place definitely beats many hotels in the area in elegance, price, beauty, and history. Like the other reviewers have said, use of this hotel is limited to those with affiliation to the military. Hopefully you have a friend that can take you here, just touring the grounds is a sight itself. The prices have gone up since we last stayed, but it beats anywhere else in Monterey as far as pricing goes. 50 for a single room, 60 for a suite. All of the rooms have kitchenettes, fridges, microwaves, and coffeemakers. Not to mention, the bed is awesome, along with its plush down feather comforter, pillows, and pillowtop. The trifecta! This hotel used to be the Hotel Del Monte and was bought as part of the Naval Postgraduate school grounds. The building is not only an Inn, but serves as a dining hall, offices for the school, the school of international studies, a bar, and much more. This place is amazing, so if you ever get a chance to tour NPS, make this place a stop. Make sure to high five the peacocks while you are there! read more

Great accommodations for a very reasonable price! You can't really beat it when you compare it to hotel prices in the Monterey area. One disclaimer before I go on ***there is no air conditioning*** It is a very old building. You can open the windows to let in some ocean air, but be forewarned. If it's hot outside, you better believe that it's going to be hot inside. I came to Monterey in the early summer, so the weather was pretty mild. It was around ~75 deg in my room at night. A little warmer than I'm used to, but bearable. After a full day of walking around Monterey Bay, you won't even notice the difference. You'll sleep like a baby. Highly recommend this hotel for many other reasons...to include the old historic building that it is situated in, the manicured gardens, and the accessibility of the beach, running trails, and downtown. Old Fisherman's wharf if .75 miles away, downtown is 1 mile away, and Cannery Row is 2 miles away. What's not to love? read more

Came to Monterey for a weekend trip with my family and my father in law booked my husband and I a room at the Navy Gateway Inn & Suites. The site is beautiful and occupies the historic Del Monte hotel and resort which dates all the way back to 1878. So much history in this place. Take a stroll through the gardens and walk through the incredible ball room and just admire the architecture. Everything is just absolutely gorgeous! A standard room is ~$60/night and the rooms are quite spacious with their high ceilings, clean and include a kitchenette with a Keurig coffee maker hallelujah! They have most amenities needed including free wifi! The bed is so comfortable that we slept through the night and woken up sometimes to the subtle tune of God Bless America I think it was coming from the neighboring chapel? Not quite sure but just let me emphasize that it wasn't loud and definitely wasn't a blaring trumpet or anything. Take into consideration that the place is older so there will be some creaking and the walls are thin but during our stay here it was quiet most of the time. Unfortunately, they do not have a continental breakfast on the weekends and where were the peacocks that were so mentioned? I was looking forward to seeing them roaming around the grounds but did not see any. On the other hand though, there were a ton of other wildlife...squirrels as well as geese and other beautiful birds around. Note that it might be quite difficult and quite strict to get on the grounds if you don't have a military ID. I believe that there is a multi-day process in order to get in and out of the premises without a military ID so make sure you plan in advance and have proper identification so that there isn't any confusion at the gate. The location of the Navy Gateway Inn & Suites is so convenient and just minutes away from the Monterey Waterfront and Cannery Row. Would definitely want to stay here again while visiting Monterey if we had the opportunity. read more

This is a very classy place. When I was on a vacation, I came through Monterey to see my girlfriend. At her recommendation, I decided to stay at this hotel. It was not what I had expected at all. Upon entering the lobby, I found myself in a very historical atmosphere. From a balcony to the pillars, from the long hallway to the massive ballroom, I could have not guessed this to be a military dwelling at all. The room itself was very large. The space was more than manageable and the kitchenette (w/ Keurig) was a nice touch. For a competitive price compared to staying off-post, this place was more than worth it. My advice would be to book well in advance. That goes double for holiday weekends! read more

I honor the Navy for doing such a great job preserving the public areas of this historic hotel. The lodging itself is a mixed bag though. Our room had an awesome overstuffed bed with down comforter. But especially considering this lodge is part of a school, it's odd that there was no desk for a computer. The bathroom in our room was definitely the low point. Poor water pressure in the shower, combined with water temp that kept getting hotter and colder, made for a challenging shower experience. Add in the antiquated sink, and the commercial-grade toilet (think bus station)' and the plumbing pretty much killed the initial luxury vibe. Otherwise, some coffee and a comp continental breakfast would be a welcome addition. I mean, even the Army Lodge at the Presidio has that. And they pretty much suck otherwise. read more

My husband and I stayed here Saturday night before Mother's Day with our 1 year old. The bedroom was very spacious,had a living room and a kitchenette and 1 full bathroom. Checking in took forever though. You get your keys in the main office then have to drive to the other side of base to get to the room so that was kind of annoying but all in all it was a nice stay! read more

The rooms are inexpensive and the buildings are old and quite amazing to look around at. The grounds are well kept and look great. The rooms are old but didn't seem to have that old musty smell so that was really good ;) no air conditioning here so be warned. This lace is a hidden secret. Unfortunately the 6:30 breakfast has NEVER opened up on time. It's amazing to me how unprofessional and derelict the staff is in there duties. It's 6:40, students are pounding on the door with no answer. The front desk was called but doesn't sound like they can do anything. For a military org, they're FUBAR with morning breakfasts. The rooms are great though. Front desk staff has taken to leaving the desk unmanned with a sign saying when they'll be back. I arrived For checkin at 2130 and was greeted by a sight that said the front desk staff would return in 30 minutes. I've never experienced a civilian front desk do this. Very odd. So we stood there, at the front desk, waiting......... I can only think that this is a sign of financial distress, Manning layoffs and or mismanagement. It's really sad because this is such an iconic facility. read more

We were so excited to be staying at the hotel after seeing all of the amazing reviews and photos. This place is average at best. Great value for Monterey, but I don't think I'd come out of my way to Monterey just to stay here. We originally checked into a standard deluxe (which doesn't make any sense at all) that had a kitchenette, but no tables or chairs to dine at. We requested to switch the the suite for $10 more per night. Prices have changed and this suite was $96 a night. Room is spacious, but the walls and ceilings are paper thin and you hear every time a door closes and every step a person makes. It doesn't seem to be a full hotel at the moment so it would have been nice to have been put in a room away from construction OR at least warned there would be construction going on. The check in area and the east wing building we are staying in are a bit of a walk away. Also if you are bringing your dog request a lower floor since there is only one elevator in the building. read more

If you do have the privilege then you can expect to spend $86. It also is based on your rank, so it can vary for others. Regardless, it's cheaper then getting a room out in town. read more

Checked in here after having an issue with another hotel. It was great! There's no sign on the outside. I think the registration place says Hermann hall. We had to drive the loop a few times to figure it out. The front desk was accommodating and described places to eat and how to navigate the base. The rooms are older but re-done. We stayed in a king deluxe with a small kitchen (with silverware, plates, frying pan, spatula), half fridge, sitting area, bathroom and bedroom. The bed was nicely done. The bathroom and living area was slightly outdated but clean. We will definitely stay on base again if in the area. $160 for two nights was a great deal! read more

My wife and I stayed here and it was great. The room was HUGE with a very comfortable bed and a nice flat screen TV. The building is beautiful and the service was excellent. I think we paid $55 per night, which in Monterey is ridiculously low. A few notes, there is no breakfast of any sort. The bathrooms were kind of a drag. Not very nice, outdated... The rest of the room was great, but the bathroom leaves something to be desired. read more
