We have not stayed at this hotel in about 7 years, so it's been a while. The elevator is very slow at times, but they do have stairs to take if you don't feel like waiting. Hotel staff were very friendly and professional. This time we had the oceanfront room with the sofa bed. Beautiful views, of course, from the balcony. The room was clean, however there is an ant problem in the bathroom. It was not too bad, but we still weren't thrilled to see an ant here and there crawling on our things in the bathroom. It is strange that they use cloth shower curtains, so every time you take a shower they get soaked. Some toiletries are provided, but not as many as they used to. They used to give lotion, shower caps, shower gel, etc. Now it's just bar of soap, shampoo and conditioner. The bathroom is nice, though, with double sinks. Sofa bed worked out great for our 8 year old. She said it was comfortable, and we were also comfortable in the king size bed, which had a firm mattress. It can get noisy in the room with the balcony door open due to the seals and seagulls, but closing the door blocks most of the sound. We kept it open in the day and shut it when we went to bed. Breakfast - well, I guess you can't really complain too much when it's complimentary with the room, but it's really nothing to write home about. Hard boiled eggs, fruit plate, yogurt, and some muffins. Me, being a diabetic, I couldn't really eat any of it, except the eggs. Our daughter enjoyed it, though she is pretty easygoing. We had been hoping to save some money by eating breakfast at the hotel but we ended up eating breakfast out every day we were there. Be prepared to do A LOT of walking because this hotel is at the very end of Cannery Row -- although it's great exercise, and gave us a chance to work off all the calories from our meals. lol. The room was nice, we'd probably stay there again. One thing we were disappointed about was the hotel used to offer a discount if you bought aquarium tickets through them. They no longer do that. They also used to offer free bottled water in the room, which they also no longer do. read more

We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely come back! The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating. When we decided to extend our stay by an extra night, our harbor-view room wasn't available for the additional night, but they went out of their way to make it work so we didn't have to switch rooms. We really appreciated that! Parking was also very reasonably priced at $25, especially compared to other hotels in the area. The room itself was spacious, the bed was very comfortable (firm, just how we like it), and the harbor view was absolutely perfect. We were a little concerned after reading reviews about the sea lions being noisy, but we actually loved hearing them from the balcony! Once the balcony door was closed, we couldn't hear them at all, and they never disturbed our sleep. One of our favorite perks was the complimentary binoculars available to guests--they were a fun touch for watching the harbor. And don't miss the sunrise from the fourth-floor rooftop terrace--it's absolutely beautiful! There were just a few minor things that could be improved. The hotel only has one elevator, and it can be quite slow during busy times. We also wish the freshly baked cookies were available throughout the day. They were put out around 3:00 p.m., but they disappeared almost immediately because they were so popular. When we arrived, our room temperature was around 78°F. We called the front desk to ask about the A/C and were told someone would come up. Security arrived and explained that the hotel doesn't have air conditioning, so the options are to use the fan or open the balcony door. It would have been helpful if the front desk had shared that information when we called. We left the screened balcony door open while we were out the next day, and the room cooled down nicely. The only other thing we wished the room had was a microwave. Overall, these were very minor issues compared to everything we loved about our stay. The parking is tight. I suggest you go there early around 1pm to get a good parking and just walk or take the free trolley to the popular destinations. In room breakfast was fresh and delicious. We had ants in our room but didn't say anything I think they know they have ants. No AC. It was hard to sleep. We had the doors open for the ocean breeze but the street noise was a lot. Do not judge a hotel by its cover. At first glance this place isn't that inviting, but once you get in and you're greeted by the friendly staff, your perspective suddenly changes. This was a quick weekend getaway trip for my wife, and we had booked a room with a Ocean view, but our first room view was obstructed and after a quick call we were upgrade to a full ocean view room. Our room was awesome! Very spacious with a large bathroom and huge outdoor patio. The patio offer almost a full 180' view of the ocean and parts of DT Monterey. The hotel was pretty full based on the parking lot, but we never heard a peep from anyone. Did I mention that sea otters were hanging out in the ocean in front of our patio?! For the price point I expected something more grand. The rooms were a bit outdated in terms of wallpaper and bedding, amenities etc. Rooms were very clean and the service was great don't get me wrong. The location was very convenient and allows you to walk everywhere. The breakfast was decent and they bring it to you at the timestamp you want it too - which is a unique feature. It's not the hotel's fault but more so the clients that come here.... We had the unfortunate experience of staying in a harbor bay view room (upgraded pricing) and had to be subjected to the people below us smoking weed for hours at late night. We brought this up to the front desk as there's a 0 smoking policy but the people they were never kicked out. I woke up to another session of them smoking at 8am. The front desk asked us if we wanted to move rooms instead of kicking the people or enforcing policy. Hopefully something happened to them because you do have to sign a damages waiver for smoking or leaving a pet on the balcony. For this hotel, I wouldn't see myself booking it again with the people ruining the romantic experience and the street is quite noisy with revving cars blasting bassy music daily. Last thing I want to mention is that the ceiling walls are so thin you can hear your neighbor above walk around -- it's pretty loud. It killed the vibe in my opinion. read more

They don't tell you the room with pullout coach is only on the 2nd floor and 1st floor is parking garage and the office. There's no restaurant in the hotel. The hotel is at the very end of the strip, 15 min walk from the aquarium... which is the other end of the strip. Food area is a bit far from the hotel (5+ min walk) a bit difficult walking with kids. The closest one is expensive for us. Oh and the tub is slippery and their nonskid mat is small, pls be careful. read more

This is beautifully located at the beginning of Cannery Row. Convenient parking, easy check in, very accommodating staff. We were welcomed by the friendliest young lady with long blonde hair and friendly smile. She was warm, inviting, and had great recommendations for our stay. A bottle of Chardonnay and decadent chocolates were delivered to the room upon arrival. Such a romantic treat. The room was so spacious with the best view. Bathroom also spacious and everything spotless. We made time to enjoy both hot tubs and the fire pit. Breakfast was delivered to the room as well. Yummy fresh cut fruit, yogurt, baked goods, o.j., coffee. Our stay was short but so worth it!! Great location, with really nice views of the beach from your room. However, the facilities in the hotel are dated and in some cases in need of repair. Bed was firm and comfortable. We did have to call maintenance to address an issue with the mini-fridge. Maintenance person came quickly and was professional and courteous. The staff here is the best anywhere. The view from your private balcony if you have an Ocean front room is wonderful. This was far from as good as previous stays. No hand soap in the bathroom, only two towels. Things are getting kind of shabby here. No binoculars in the room like previous stays. The table was really dirty. There were handprints on the light switches. I don't mind things wearing out, but I would have liked a heads up that there were no binoculars. I could've brought my own. I would've liked a few more towels and some hand soap. It won't stop us from coming here because there's nothing like waking up in the early morning and watching the otters swim below. We are assuming that they won't be doing any upgrades and will either be selling or maybe it's going to close due to wear. We are so fortunate to be able to stay here a few days every other year or so. read more

We stayed here for 3 nights, in a Harbor/Ocean view room with a private balcony (Room 206) and found the room comfortable and the accommodations slightly above average. The room was very nice and king-sized bed was comfy. There was a mini-fridge (appreciated!) and 2 hot tubs to utilize. Because we were traveling with a child, we took advantage of the rooftop hot tub first thing each morning and enjoyed the ocean view under the crisp, gray cloud cover. Our kid found it magical and a ton of fun! It's within walking distance to Cannery Row, the Marina, and the Warf. There is also a small beach right next door with mild waves and soft sand--perfect for families with young kids. Some things to mention, though, as you consider this hotel.... Continental breakfast was provided as room service based on a cards you filled out each evening. It was not buffet style, which I didn't love, because we were given items we wouldn't eat--like certain kinds of fruit, flavors of yogurt, and types of pastries. I prefer being able to see my options and take what I want rather than hope for items we will like and not waste. The room provides a tea maker.... but no tea bags. And the k-cups for the coffee maker were all French roast. Yuck. French roast is burnt coffee. Our room was one of 2 on the harbor view side that had a partial wall on the balcony instead of a full see-through railing as show in the pictures. That sucked and made the balcony feel smaller and limited the view. Room 406 also has this issue, so be aware. We have a child, so I get why they may have put us there, but I would have preferred a full see-through balcony and my child is old enough to be safe. There is a city fountain that runs all day right across from the harbor view rooms. Many might like it! We wished we could have heard the ocean waves, instead. It does shut off, though, each evening at 9:30 PM. Finally, the walls and floors are pretty thin. We were woken early each morning (3 AM and 5 AM) by the folks above us walking and banging around, by cars coming and going, and the planes coming in to land at the airport. Bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper. Rooms 201-205 seemed be blocked by some large bushes and trees across the street. We got lucky and our balcony just missed them. If you want a view, ask for a higher floor or rooms 206 and higher. read more

Booked this place by mistake thinking I was booking The Monterey Plaza next-door (where we've stayed before). Kind of disappointed at first but was surprised by what was offered. The view from the room was outstanding! The building itself looks less like a hotel from the outside but on the inside it's very acceptable but shows a little ware. The bed is very comfortable and provides a great sleep. There are many seals in the harbor and it gets noisy at times but sliding the door closed eliminates any disturbance. No HVAC but I doubt you will need one because Monterey hardly ever get hot enough for one. If you do get a little warm a tower fan is provided in the room for that. Covered parking at $25 a night is a little cramped when filled as its turning radius requires many back and forth moves to access & exit to spot. All and all I still am giving this place five stars as the minor issues stated above really are not that bad read more

We had a fantastic stay here with our toddler during a drizzly weekend when we visited the aquarium. Honestly my favorite part was the bathroom, which had spacious double sinks and a large bathtub. The toilet had its own door. Breakfast was standard and rather unimpressive given the price range of this hotel - coffee or juice or milk, fruit, optional yogurt, muffins or croissants. The bed was comfortable and the room was equipped with a fridge but no microwave as well as a single Keurig maker. The TV allowed you to stream from your phone but had some connectivity issues that made using that feature a pain. The views made up for its shortcomings, with a serene balcony that overlooked the beautiful Monterey bay. We had a lovely breakfast out there one morning and generally enjoyed looking out there, even when it was raining. I would stay here again! read more

Very friendly and helpful staff. Gorgeous views of the water and next to a fantastic paved walking trail. We were able to leave our car parked in the covered garage and walk down to the wharf. Our room was very clean with a huge bathroom. The breakfast is very simple but we always ate a bigger lunch and late dinner anyway. I only removed one star because the bed was super firm although having a pillow menu helped, so the second night was not too bad. We will definitely stay here again and will recommend to any friends/family if they travel to Monterey. read more

My husband and I decided on Monterey Bay Inn for our one year wedding anniversary bringing along with our 2 month old for her first big trip. We decided on the panoramic view room since we assumed we'd be in the room more with the little one. This room was over $600 a night at a discounted rate, not including parking, taxes or fees. Upon arrival we noticed it was a little more outdated than we were anticipating. The wall paper in the room is peeling off, the table looked so dirty I grabbed a Clorox wipe to clean it -- turns out it was just stained, and I walked on the carpet without socks on and immediately felt like I needed to shower. Additionally, upon arriving we were given ear plugs because there were about 100 sea lions outside the panoramic windows (very pretty, but very loud). We laughed all of this off and chalked it up to a beach town hotel. What we couldn't laugh off was coming back from our morning activities to ants all over the bathroom and on my retainers (that were in a case). We called down and before I even told them where the ants were, the woman in the phone said "oh, in the bathroom?" As if this was a common issue. They supposedly sent someone up to clean and we went about our evening. We then came back with dinner to find ants all over my babies clean bottles at a sink outside of the bathroom in a little bottle washing station that we had. I went back in the bathroom only to find more ants all over my things that I had moved to the bathtub ledge and again around the sink. We decided at 8pm we should switch hotels. Beth at the front desk was extremely unhelpful, told us it's normal to have ants when it's hot (we were on the 3rd floor) and tried to switch us to another room. We then only received a partial refund of $450. Shame on them and what a horrible experience. Save your money and your sanity. read more

The room we reserved was amazing. It overlooked the ocean right in front. Although this hotel isn't updated or anything, it's still a good spot. It was in the middle of everything so we could either go left and go to the park and rent a swan to paddle around the lake or go right and seek the downtown area. My husband and I went on a get away without the kids and the trip was everything we needed. A nice peaceful town. I know covid was happening so it was semi desolate but we did not mind. read more

This was our first stay here but will not be out last! We were welcomed in by Brian who I must say was an absolute delight! He was so professional and so kind and welcoming, it was absolutely refreshing because he was not over the top and fake like you get with some places. He is truly a gem this inn should look after and hold onto. We were offered an upgrade which we took and I am so glad we did. We took an ocean view and had the perfect view of the harbor and uninterrupted views of the ocean. It was magnificent! The room was spacious, well appointed, spotless and comfortable. Parking was easy and undercover and free. Breakfast is delivered to you in the morning with you choices and time included and delicious. Baked pastry, fruit plate, coffee, juice, hard boiled egg and yogurt. A roof top jacuzzi and a lower floor jacuzzi, with a fire pit and sitting area, a couple of outdoor tables you can go eat your meal or just sit. The lobby is spotless and inviting. While not as big as their neighbors and not a full on resort style, they are not lacking in any way and can hold their own. In my opinion being smaller they look after you and offer you more than the big guys. Its more intimate. Thank you for a wonderful stay! read more

Huge windows that give you an amazing view of the Pacific Ocean and San Carlos Beach right next to the hotel. A friend was showing me what he had planned for his wedding anniversary and the corner suites here looked so great I benefitted from all his research by booking this hotel for the family. The suites have fireplaces, great views, and a jacuzzi bathtub. We enjoyed hearing the seals and otters and seeing them diving near the kelp forests. There is a constant stream of activity during the day with kayakers, scuba divers, and paddle boarders on the water. The worst complaint is the side windows facing San Carlos Beach. Right outside is a rock that people climb on and fish from and they can see into the room, the balcony not really useful unless at night or early morning unless you like strangers really close by. They have their own private parking which is convenient. The rooms themselves are a bit older but worth it for us for those amazing floor to ceiling windows. read more

In one sentence ... JUST BOOK IT! I've stayed in hotels all over the country. I have NEVER seen a cleaner hotel! (This boggles my mind because of the beach being right next to the hotel yet there are no traces of sand in the lobby) Walking in the lobby is super clean and the hotel staff are very nice. They even have fresh baked cookies in the afternoon. The room... I don't know if it was newly renovated or they have a staff that cares about their work but it was spotless. The shower and bathroom didn't have mold in it like most hotel showers. I was blown away! The bar was clean, the glasses spotless, the fridge was spotless and super clean, there wasn't one speck of dust in the room on anything. The bed was comfortable. The pull out couch was not comfy though, it had rod running up the center that cut into your back. The linens were super clean and spotless. The patio was clean. Which was also surprising with all the seagulls around. There are binoculars in the room which to my surprise were super clean and the lenses were very clean, not one smudge on them. If I called the front desk needing something it was delivered promptly. The view from my room was amazing. Talk about relaxing. First thing in the morning, at a time of your choosing they bring you breakfast of your choosing. Which breakfast each morning became the best best part of my day. Open the doors to the patio watch the water and the otters playing outside the room while drinking my coffee (which by the way they had VERY good coffee), eating delicious fresh baked pastries or muffins with delicious perfectly ripe fresh fruit. It was a perfect light breakfast to keep me held over until lunch. The hot tubs which are normally nasty were super clean! The view from the 4th floor hot tub.. man... I didn't want to leave. It was so perfect! The location of the hotel was perfectly situated next to beaches and minutes walking distance from Cannery Row and the fishermans wharf. This place was an absolute gem! If I end up coming back to Monterey I'll definitely be back. I've been missing my morning coffee/breakfasts with the otters and starfish below our room. I want to thank all the hotel staff for your hospitality and for keeping such a beautiful, clean hotel. You also have some amazing bakers! We have stayed here twice. We will probably stay elsewhere next time. The staff is nice. The building and rooms could use major updates. And they should update the whole place for what they charge per night. There are two hot tubs but the fourth floor one is always occupied. Last time we went the hot tub was only a warm tub. We got the Cannery Row room and unfortunately there is no soundproofing, the balcony door doesn't even securely shut, so be prepared to hear everything going on. It is centrally located to both the aquarium on cannery row and fishermans wharf. The breakfast delivery is nice but it's hard to tell what you will get even when you order the items because they differ by the day. Like what pastry or fruit will show up. There is a small mini fridge in the room, no microwave. I think for the price the room deserves a bigger fridge space and the microwave in the room. read more

11-13-2003 Pros: Location, Location, Location. That's sums it up for this place. Whale watching was added $180.00 for two adults. It was 4 hours long on a decent vessel. The staff at the Monterey Bay Whale Watch Center were very nice and helpful. The desk clerk at the Monterey Bay Inn Hotel was nice and professional. His name was Daryn. The lobby is small and well kept. The hotel is walking distance to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The hotel is also near a small city park that includes a small beach. There are several restaurants, candy shops, and businesses on Cannery Row Street. The view was decent from our room, you can see the ocean better from the balcony outside. The restroom was a very nice size. Cons: The room (404) was small and dated for the cost of $221.00 a night. Some pieces of furniture are torn, chipped or stained. The sliding door needs new weatherstripping as the wind comes through howling. The bed is hard probably could use a cloud top or a mattress topper, whatever you call it. The hotel also charges for parking ($25.00 a night) including disabled parking. The hotel room walls appear to be thin. You can hear a lot of activity from the hallway and adjoining rooms like walking, opening, closing doors and sliding hangers. This room also has an old school wall heater and a free-standing fan probably because there's no air conditioner. The sounds travel through the sliding door. You can hear loud motorcycles, vehicles and sirens. Probably because we are like 30 feet from the public roadway. Carpets need replacing, wallpaper coming apart at the seams', new updated furniture is needed. The complimentary breakfast lacking, The Hotel does not have an onsite restaurant. They only sell bottled water and snacks from a cabinet behind the counter. I had to remove some hard water build up from the tub's nozzle so the shower head switch would work properly. THIS Ocean Harbor View Room (#404) in its current state is not worth $221.00 a night. read more

The view from the beachfront room was obviously spectacular ! Being able to open the slider and listen to waves all night, dreamy ! The problem came when the guest below us decided to smoke on his balcony. This is a strict "no smoking, no pet" hotel and you must sign a waiver attesting compliance. Once the smoking began (1030 pm) our ability to sleep ended. After the first cigarette we figured the guest would go to bed, but no... there were consistent cigarettes to be had through the night. By 2am we called the front desk to complain. Prior to that we let the guest below us know his smoke was bothering us. While no more smoke came up, the real issue was what the manager said the next day when I let her know about the fiasco. First she, with her contemptuous toned, asked "why couldn't you sleep?" Then "why didn't you just close your slider?" First thought that came to my mind is that she's also a victim blamer. News flash: we didn't do anything wrong. Your other guest violated not only your policy but the law. Don't get me wrong....I'm all for breaking rules as long as it doesn't affect or hurt anyone else. If I do break a rule and it harms another, I certainly don't blame that person - unlike this manager. (Sigh) She did offer us $100 discount. Now to the condition of the property: it's run down, carpets in hallway are stained and dirty, and it's just "meh." I'd love to have had an amazing experience bc we live close and like to do overnights at the ocean. But I'll certainly never come back here. This time of year the room was $500/night. read more

The room was very clean and set up nicely so the bed is facing the beach. It was amazing to wake up and see the water and beach. It is a only a few yards to the sand on a beach that is not crowded and also very clean. Everything is within walking distance, Cannery row, beach, Monterey historic park, aquarium, pier and the SEALS. The hotel is literally on the water, its smaller hotel but we enjoy that since it tends to be more peaceful and quiet . The bathroom was clean and updated with dual sinks! Made it convenient for us to get ready in the mornings. read more

We came here for our anniversary and they were so sweet they had a bottle of wine and chocolates with a sign saying "Happy Anniversary" signed by all the staff! The view was phenomenal. I definitely recommend the ocean front suite with balcony. The daily breakfast brought to your room is also a very sweet touch. The coffee isn't the best though. They also have 2 hot tubs and one is overlooking the water, beautiful! Very close to all the downtown Monterey businesses and restaurants. Highly recommend! Monterey Bay Inn exceeded all expectations for such a special getaway. We stayed here during a busy sold out weekend Sunday- Tuesday for our wedding night. Upon arrival we had called to see if we can get an early check in as check in is not until 4pm. They did not have any rooms ready but they did offer us a precheck to speed up the process when a room becomes available. We were welcomed and greeted by the friendly staff at the front counter for our pre check in and they were sure to give us a call when our room was available. We had a complimentary bottle of champagne and chocolates waiting for us in our beautiful Harbor View King size sofa bedroom. The rooms were clean, bathroom was spacious and the couch area was a great addition. We had our personal patio which was great for the late nights and early morning. Our room had a wet bar, small refrigerator and plenty of cups and wine glasses. During Covid they still offer the breakfast but instead they deliver it to your room at your requested time. Location is a given, but the exceptional service, the patio, the cleanliness of the rooms, the comfort of the bed, the robes and the views are what will bring me back. I did not have any complaints about the hotel and service. We will be coming back for our anniversaries and upcoming mini staycations. Thank you for making our wedding weekend special. read more
