NAWAB Rocks in Yonkers" Aug 5, 2012 I went there for Ramadan Aftar (Fast Breaking) & Dinner with my Family. Usually we go to Jackson Heights or Queens every year. But this time a friend of mine mentioned about Nawab Restaurant in Yonkers. Honestly, I wasnt expecting that much good services and food quality in Yonker's that neighbourhood. My famly enjoyed the Aftar and they had prayer arrangement in the back before dinner. Food : It was SUPERB, If I say some thing about food quality and quantity, I would simply say "WOW" impressive. Veriety of Pakistani, Indian Halal Food with Asian Touch. Customer Service : They Welcome us upon arrival and during dinner a Gentleman (owner or the Manager) approached us few times to make sure we are enjoying food or if we need any thing else. That make you feel like special. Price : It was very very very reasonable compare to the other restaurants in the area. Environment : Very good lighting arrangement, Clean tables, table wares and extra clean Restrooms. My family was happy and now we are planning to make it our "Family Restaurant" for all kind of occassions :) Keep it up Nawab guys. read more

We went for an early dinner on a Friday evening. The place was empty when we got there. We were surprised that they had designated parking spots for the restaurant. Saved us lot of trouble looking for parking. The food arrived promptly after we placed the order. Portion sizes of both appetizers and entrees were good. We ordered chicken soup, fish appetizer, biryani, lamb, fried fish and paneer. All items were delicious. Overall we had a very good experience. read more

The food is excellent, very authentic and fresh. Service is good. We couldn't eat it all so they gave us take away plastic containers so we could put in them what we wanted to take home. Very friendly people. Right off Riverdale Ave at Hudson St. there are parking places labeled with the restaurant's name. Free. The restaurant is only 50 feet from the parking east on Hudson. You may want to indicate how hot you like your food. We had no problem with most. I ordered a lamb stew and my wife salmon. But with the salmon came a veg that we thought was cucumber. No it was a hot pepper? Really hot.. My son got a Tandoori chicken leg he said was hot. I said "authentic". When were were on a tour in India they served us "West Indian", ie not hot. I've been here twice, and I have to say this is one of the better Indian/Pakistani places around. They have parking nearby, municipal parking with meters, but they have about 4 or 5 spots that are free for Nawab, so it shouldn't be that bad to park. It's located in downtown Yonkers, so having the parking is helpful. The decor is definitely more modern than you expect. While most places try to recreate 18th century atmosphere in the Indian/Pakistani restaurants, this one tries to go more modern. It almost has a lounge feel to it, with multicolored lights and being dim lighted. The food itself is very good. The first time I went there, ordered a la carte, got vegetable Pakora, while the gf got Paani Puri. Both plates were plentiful (You can almost say the Pakora is almost entree sized) and very tasty. Pakora definitely had a bit more flavor than I expected, and Paani Puri is pretty rare to see. For entree, we got the Chana Masala and Nawabi Shrimp. The rice that comes with it is pretty good, although I don't think it's basmati rice. The Channa Masala was very good, with a nice hint of spice, and went well with the rice. I don't like seafood, so I didn't try the Nawabi Shrimp, but she said it tasted pretty good. This size of the food was big enough that we didn't dare try deserts. The second time I went there, we went there for a late night buffet (they have buffets that start at 8:30 PM for Ramadan) and they had plenty of choices. It tends to slant towards the non-veg consumer, with a high amount of choices that dealt with fish, lamb, and chicken. Although they did have Samosas, Pakoras, as well. The food was tasty, fulfilling. The price is a bit high on the buffet (a few dollars more than usual), but it's also later in the night, and places charge more for dinner than say lunch, so I guess it's understandable. The only negative I can think of is that, they don't have tap water. They serve water in water bottles, so you get charged for water. For the buffet, they had a few juices available as part of it, but no water. I tried the one that looked like mango, and it tasted decent, not mango lassi good, but decent. The service is excellent, the people were friendly, and and nice. We took a deal the first time that got 10% off on our bills for checking in on Yelp, so that helped out the first time. I think besides the water issue, this is an excellent place to try out, with good tastes, large plates, and very good service. read more

$13.99 per person for the weekend lunch buffet (lasting 11:30am - 4pm) that is perfect for the hungry, picky carnivore! The only downside is that selection isn't as extensive for entrees (4 meat dishes with only 2 dishes for vegetarians) with just 2 desserts, which were not memorable. This small mom and pop restaurant was the perfect spot for 4 of us on a Sunday around 1pm. No line, no wait. We came in and got seated right away and started on the lunch buffet. Seemed like 1 man was there to man the whole restaurant with probably 1 chef in the kitchen. He warned us if we wanted ANYTHING a la carte / off the menu (instead of the buffet), we'd be waiting at least 45 minutes. It's ok...buffet it is! The entrees included: - Butter chicken - Tandoori chicken - Chicken briyani (rice) - Another stewed chicken dish - Beef curry Veggie options were: - Mixed vegetables - Paneer - Mixed salad I tried all the dishes minus the beef curry and flavor-wise, everything tasted amazing. Flavorful and distinct from one another, perfect with the naan served to the table. Came here for my cuzins anniversary. Was surprised at first, the place looked pretty small. The serVice was good. Can't complain about food everything was on point. Wow. Nawab is an absolute gem among the dozens of Pakistani restaurants in the tri-state area. Being pakistani and having experienced countless restaurants from jersey and jackson heights, I can honestly say that Nawab serves some of the most authentic food I've ever had. Chicken samosas were crisp and delicious, pakoras were perfectly fried, the hot and sour soup was fresh and of perfect consistency. The nur jahan chicken biryani was incredible with chicken pieces covered in fried onions, and the chicken tikka masala, bhindi, and palak ghosht were tender and freshly made. The chef is an authentic Lahori who arrived 3 years ago and his food definitely serves as proof. We finished with freshly made kahwa tea with cinammon and honey. Overall, Nawab gets extremely high marks for authenticity, taste, and presentation. The ambience and decor is classy and modern, which is rarely found in pakistani restaurants. The waiter, manager, and chef were gracious and very prompt. Needless to say, this is the place to experience pakistani food, and we'll be back! read more

We entered the restaurant, only 2 people dining on a Saturday night at 7pm.. Not a good sign.. But I heard their food is good so was positive.. There was no one to seat us.. Server seated us after 5 minutes.. The hostess emerged later.. But didn't seem enthusiastic about people coming into dine.. She reluctantly came to take our order, It was evident with her body language.. The food was delicious the person who served, checked on us a couple of times, he made us feel good. We asked for the check, she brought the check with added 18%gratuity. We are a table of 2ppl. I told her to take it off but She said it was restaurant policy instructed by her boss to add mandatory gratuity on all checks. I understand that over if a table has over 5ppl mandatory gratuity is acceptable but not for a table of 2. No wonder the restaurant is empty despite of good food. If the service staff were hospitable and the restaurant policy was right, it would provide a better experience for visitors. read more

I went three times in the past week due to an acquaintances recommendation. I'll never listen to them again. Each time I got there after the posted opening time. Each time he made me wait 25-50 minutes before I could come in. The third time I had called about their Sunday brunch. I asked what time they opened (noon), how much was the buffet, etc. I arrived 10 minutes after the time he said, and when I walked in the older gentleman, who seems to be the main host/server, informs me with an annoyed attitude that they don't serve the buffet until 20-30 minutes after they open. Why not tell me that when I called? When I calmly mentioned that, he got an major attitude. Well, I wanted to give them one more chance. So I left, ran a quick errand, and came back 30 minutes later, to an empty restaurant. The regular meals I had were mediocre. Not bad, but nothing to talk about. Just boring, under-spiced, and some items were undercooked, others falling apart into mush. The Naan was one of the worst I have had, under cooked and soggy. The buffet that the made me leave and come back for 40 minutes later was terrible, and with only a few items, some meats/curries were undercooked, others rubbery, and with none of the regular assortment of chutneys/salads/soup/etc. I expect in any Indian or Pakistani restaurant. Every item was lukewarm. The food had just come out of the kitchen and was not kept at the proper, safe, government regulated temperature at the buffet. There are other decent Indian restaurants in Yonkers and local towns in Southern Westchester, maybe not fantastic, but better than Nawab. Never again. read more

Although I liked it, I would rate this place just a bit lower than the Yelp average, perhaps 3.6-7 if I could. Came for a Friday lunch. The buffet is not available then but there is a listing of $8,99 lunch specials. These include salad, nan and rice. As the price was reasonable and we are good eaters, we chose three entrees for two people, the chicken balti, the palak paneer, and the dal. Soon the owner appeared to express his regrets that the dal was not available, but he would bring us channa masala. Fair enough. When the food arrived, we received our palak paneer, our chicken balti, and mixed vegetables - the latter on the house as the channa masala was not available either. The palak paneer was perhaps the best I have ever had, as the paneer had been fried or roasted to a delicious crustiness. The chicken balti was a bit underseasoned but contained what I thought were real fenugreek leaves. The vegetables were also quite mild. The generous portion of nan, together with the owner's complement of the vegetables, redeemed any disappointments. We received glasses of tap water, but when we asked for more, bottles of Poland Spring were produced, and added to our bill at $1 each. Our Diet Cokes arrived cold, but without ice so perhaps the issue here is ice. You really can't complain about $1 spring water, but maybe they should let you know. read more

I love to eat good food but when the food is GREAT, I have to write a review about it. I had an intense craving for curry and I didn't feel like driving down to my go to Thai place to pick it up. I looked through Yelp and found this restaurant. After reading the reviews and just being plain hungry, I ordered off their website through Eat24 for delivery. My food came within 40 minutes and just the sheer smell of curry made me salivate. I ordered the Balti chicken with a spice level of Medium and their chicken lollipop (spice medium also). I just couldn't stop eating and I swear I went into a carb coma afterwards. Their chicken lollipop came in four with the chicken drumstick still attached to it. It was flavorful and spicy and I ate all four and it was huge! A must try! The Balti chicken was also a star (IMO) because their spices were perfectly seasoned to perfection. You can tell through each bit that they grounded the spices from scratch and the chicken were perfect and tender. I love curry and I have been to many places around Manhattan trying out various different adaptations of curry but this is one of my favorite. Considering that I've ordered here (twice for delivery and once for takeout), I believe I am getting addicted to their food. I did order their butter chicken and it was good but I would have to pick Balti chicken over it any day. A must try! read more

But what about the jasmine rice?! I ordered online right through the app yesterday and the process was quick and awesome! Thumbs up to eats24! Now as for my meal it was quite alright but not the best. I ordered chicken tikki Marsala, palak paneer and naan. I asked the the Marsala to be mild but every time I take a bite my mouth is on fire. Perhaps I need to adjust or my meal wasn't prepared correctly because it was online after all. The Marsala sauce was also very brown and I'm accustom to red--creamy tomato sauce. Maybe because it's Pakistani-who knows. At any rate the palak was delicious as well as the naan. But the most absolutely disappointing part of the meal and why I have a rating of 3 stars was the rice! They gave me two small boxes of white steamed Chinese rice and not jasmine rice. The worst food i,ve had for a longtime never mind just Indian. I have just moved to Yonkers and one of the first things i needed to find was the local Indian restaurant. This place looked so good online that we were going to go to the place itself, last minute changes meant i placed an order for delivery. Thank God i didn't waste my time going to the restaurant. It was really bad! The Paani Puri $5.50 i ordered did not arrive and the rice to go with the Butter Chicken i also ordered was also not delivered. The Jhangeri Lamb Tikka Entrée $10.50. was inedible, the lamb was marinated far too long and so it was mush on the outside, it had also been cooked to long, it ended up being grey in color and tasted like liver. I was so hungry i really tried to eat it, but i couldn't. Needless to say, i will never order from here again. I went here for the first time yesterday. We had tai soup, chicken tiki masala and two other things.... AMAZING!!! The place can seat quite a few people and it looks very pretty. Great food and out standing service what more do I need? On top of that it's very reasonably priced. I will definitely be eating here again and looking forward to trying out new things from their menu. Con: I agree with some of the other yelpers it's not in the best area of Yonkers but that's up not the restaurant to fix. Let the city of deal with that. It's a great Pakistani cuisine. Love chicken karahi and chicken tikka. Kheer or rice pudding. Went there few times, absolutely amazing experience. Great service. Clean washrooms. Big banquet hall. The first time we went here it was good. Maybe it was because we were new to the area. But the second time we went it seemed like everything tasted the same except the meat served with the sauce was different. Some of the meat in the hot plate was lukewarm while others were really hot. The two times we went we never had a choice to get tap water. The restaurant gave us one free 8oz water bottle to share between two people and then from there if we wanted more we were charged for additional water bottles. read more

The last time I went when it just open up, the food was bland n no spices, I was so disappointed. Then last week, my hubby wanted vegetarian food so he convinced me to go since he never bn there to give it another try. We had the buffet and I was surprised how everything was perfect!!!! The spices, the heat from the spices, everything was how indian food is suppose to taste like. The rice pudding was amazing! Im glad I came back n the food was so differenr from my previous experience! My wife and I were craving chicken lolipops but didn't feel like taking a drive down to manhattan/queens to get it. With a quick yelp search, we came across Nawab. We called our order in for take out and started driving down there. Parking is tough in this area but we managed to find a spot. As soon as we got there, the food was ready and nicely packed to go. We had the following: 1)Chicken Lolipops - very different from what you would get at "tangra" style restaurants. These lollipops are wings that are deboned, they mince up the chicken, add some seasoning and mold them back together in to a lollipop - Delicious and spicy. 2)Chili Chicken - fried chicken with all types of seasonings with a small amount of sauce. VERY DELICIOUS 3)hakka fried rice - basic fried rice with some veggies and eggs. This was good but not amazing. They bundled the to go package with some mint and tamarind chutneys. I'll be back here for an in house dining experience soon! read more

My wife and I wanted to try a new place. We went to Nawab for dinner on the early side of Saturday night. Free parking was available and the dining room was not crowded. It looked like they were preparing for a big party for later in the evening. The server appeared to be the owner. He was friendly and informative. He took time to understand what we liked and made great suggestions. The lollypop chicken was delicious. The entrees were also very tasty. As it was our first time, he gave us a small serving of rice pudding. The portions were so generous, it was impossible to finish the small desert. We enjoyed it and will return. I was down in Yonkers for work and just wanted to some good delivery Indian food. When I'm up closer to Tarrytown, there's a great place up there but my hotel was outside of the delivery area. I was glad to see that GrubHub said that I could get delivery from Nawab - and all of the positive reviews were encouraging. The delivery was timely. My shrimp appetizer was good and there were plenty of sauces that came along with the dish that were really tasty. The naan was fine though thought I would get more for the price. I ordered the Nawab special soup, which really ended up just being like Chinese hot and sour soup. Seriously, it was viscous with baby shrimp, tofu, and vegetables. The shrimp appetizer and naan probably rate 3-4 stars, with the sauces being really good and the shrimp being well-sized, but I just couldn't believe the soup. Another reviewer mentioned that she got Chinese-style rice, so I wonder why these kinds of items are on their menu. read more

First of all we are a family with kids that walked in, the hostess beckoned us over from the back instead of coming over to us and greeting us as is a hostess's job. Secondly, she proceeded to reprimand me for not calling because they had no table available. There were 2 tables available but she could not put them together. Well I am not really sure why this place has got a lot of good reviews! Let me be specific. I am Indian and so I do have an idea about how the food should taste. I went there yesterday and I found it over priced. It was a Ramadan special and they did not even have something like Chicken Biriyani. The fried rice was just okay! There was one chinese chicken dish! I mean seriously? That can't be a special menu. To top it all, wouldn't it be nice to not let anyone if you are observing Ramadan? So we walk in and ask if it is open, because I know it is Ramadan time, the proprietor says it is and then we wait for 20 minutes to start because the sun hasn't set! That was specifically why we were asking if they are ready to serve now! ..and who decides automatic gratuity? We were a company of three! The Ramadan special was overpriced and in addition there was a gratuity! Overall I am pretty sure there are better Indian-Pakistani restaurants out there! The food was just about okay, Nothing very spectacular! but the lack of concern, coupled with the overpriced food(does not deserve a $25 for a Ramadan Buffet) means that I am going with a one star! I went to this restaurant looking for spicy Indian food to help my congested nasal passages. My wife and I have visited many Indian restaurants around the country and have always found excellent food, except this one. I ordered Mixed vegetables curry which is described as "Seasonal vegetables cooked in a sweat red curry sauce". What I received was a can of diced carrots and peas with maybe a small potato cut in pieces in a bland red curry sauce. No other vegetables present. My wife ordered Malai Boti which was described as "Chicken marinated in yogurt and spices". What she received was braised chicken which obviously was done in a hurry since the insides were still raw. She could not eat any of it. On top of that our favorite, the Naan, looked more like falafel bread than Naan. It was thick, not thin and tasty. The salad offered with my wife's dish was stale and unsavory as well as the dressings provided. My wife ordered a ginger ale when we sat down but no one ever brought it until we asked a second time. To top the experience when the waiter came to our table I told him about the chicken and he actually proceeded to slice open some of the chicken to try to prove me wrong! It is a shame that this place calls itself an Indian restaurant. I hope people will go elsewhere and experience the REAL thing.
