So far I've been taking the slow flow class both days a week which has been a heaven sent, as well as a warm (95 degrees, not really warm imo) flow, a non heated vinyasa, and multi-instrumental sound meditation! I will say that I wish the unlocking of the door 15 minutes before class was reliable, often there's no one at the desk or if there is they don't really speak to you. That's mostly fine with me because I'm there to be a ball of energy, but what I wanted to say was ladies - please, we don't need to see your bare bottom at every spare glance up or around in the locker room. Please change in the private toilet rooms provided. Would make everyone more comfortable!!

The class was for beginners and was ran by our Yoga instructor Doug. Very knowledgeable guy who was great at helping both experienced and brand new (ahem, me) yoga enthusiasts get the best out of their experience. The room is upstairs, clean with wooden floors and although your own yoga mat and towels are recommended, they provide both to you for your first visit. Classes go for about 90 minutes, you'll sweat, and if there's a stretch you can't do, the instructor comes over to either fix you posture, or offer assistance in the form of extra blocks, etc. Located off of Waddell St, Yoga Samadhi has a private gravel lot that can get full, but we found parking. Getting in and out of this place was no problem, and being close to Atlanta, it's a must try if you have even the slightest interest in Yoga. Good group of people who really are focused on delivering a great yoga experience.

I might have to move to Virginia Highland now with my mat bag and tight pants. ::shudder:: But in all reality, this place rocks. I was a total yoga virgin and they welcomed me with open arms. The fact that your first class is free is just a cherry on top of the whole stretching and planking and namaste-ing experience. I've only been in the upstairs studio, which is clean, bright, and surprisingly cool given the hellish temperatures outside. They have plenty of blankets and bolsters to help you out if you need it, as well. My class was with Doug and he was great: didn't move too fast but wasn't painfully slow, always providing advice for how to make a move easier or more difficult. He was also always sure to give repeat instructions on when to inhale vs exhale: the thing I found most difficult. Plus, he complimented me at the end of the class, and yes, flattery will get you everywhere with me. I'm planning on purchasing a package dealio in the future and looking forward to repeat visits to Yoga Samadhi. I'm so happy to have it nearby, and so thankful to Katie W for convincing me to come along. My core muscles are much the better for it!

So, I was a little nervous because I wasn't sure how much of a fool I was going to make of myself-- but I really wanted to switch up my workout routine. I went to Gina's Anusara class for beginners. The space is small, and a little weirdly organized. They only accept cash or check, so good thing I had a checkbook. You deposit your money in this bowl, and if you need change, you make it based on the cash in there (honor system). I really liked the vibe of the place. Very relaxing and very soothing. Gina was very nonjudgmental and helped me at my sad attempt at a half hand stand (why do yoga people LOVE these??) but she was SO patient with my sometimes dense behavior. The poses were very suitable for a beginner, and even before the day was out I was feeling sore in my arms (awesome!). I really liked this class, and given that there were like 5 students total, it was great to get some individual attention. I will definitely be back, and I might sign up for a package and save a little money.

Don't practice here if you menstruate! I went to the first class of a six-week beginner course…read more Despite the advertisement that the course would be taught by "authorized ashtanga instructors", the "authorized instructors" were not even in the building - the course was taught by trainees. The bigger problem, however, was that the instruction that we received - including the handouts written by Todd - was overtly sexist. MEN can practice yoga whenever they want at the studio. WOMEN are not allowed to practice during their "moon cycle". This is not only taught and enforced, but there is even a sign on the wall in the entrance to the studio, in case you forgot and showed up on your period. I asked the "trainee instructors" about the no-yoga-on-the-rag rule and they recited some BS about how women's energy flows in a different direction than men. After the first class, I decided not to return and emailed the studio. I told them that I had a fundamental disagreement with participating in an environment that condones sexism and asked for a refund of the fee for the course, minus the cost of the single class that I attended. Not only did Todd refuse to refund ANY of my money, but he actually defended the period rule. Here, I'll quote him (including his misspellings of "menstruation" and "exercise"): "To address your specific concern, the suggestion for women to not practice during their cycle is based in science not theory. A simple google search of 'does intense exersise affect menstration' will lead to a whole list of related articles on the subject." First off, the fact that this man thinks he needs to educate ("mansplain") a woman on the topic of menstruation is problematic in and of itself. Second, it was never presented as a "suggestion". Third and most important, despite his unnamed sources found in the far reaches of the internet, HE IS BLATANTLY WRONG. There is NO scientific support for the idea that a woman should not exercise on her period. You can read this yourself on reputable sites such as womenshealth.gov (the U.S. Office on Women's Health). In fact, many of them specifically cite yoga as being one of the best forms of exercise to do on your period because it can help relieve some of the uncomfortable symptoms such as cramping. According to the Mayo Clinic, one of the "self-care tips if you're experiencing painful periods" says "[p]ractice meditation, yoga or other relaxation techniques." Even for someone who can't spell "exercise", it seems like he should have been able to figure this one out. Nope. I sent a lengthy email explaining everything, but he just ignored it. I filed a dispute with Amex, which he contested. So, yeah, I would not recommend having anything to do with them.

After moving to Asheville from the San Francisco area, I was afraid I wouldn't be able to find a good, more "athletic" pilates studio, and then I found Saran Pilates...it met my expectations completely! I hesitated for awhile on committing to going to this studio regularly since it is all the way on the opposite side of town for me and a 20+ minute drive, but it is totally worth it! I also love how upbeat and friendly Gabrielle and Kelsey are - it feels like a happy community vibe every time I walk in the door. Highly recommended.
