I am not a regular yoga person. I have only been to one actual class before in my life. Prior to that it's mostly videos and the such. So, I was a little nervous because I wasn't sure how much of a fool I was going to make of myself-- but I really wanted to switch up my workout routine. I went to Gina's Anusara class for beginners. The space is small, and a little weirdly organized. They only accept cash or check, so good thing I had a checkbook. You deposit your money in this bowl, and if you need change, you make it based on the cash in there (honor system). I really liked the vibe of the place. Very relaxing and very soothing. Gina was very nonjudgmental and helped me at my sad attempt at a half hand stand (why do yoga people LOVE these??) but she was SO patient with my sometimes dense behavior. The poses were very suitable for a beginner, and even before the day was out I was feeling sore in my arms (awesome!). I really liked this class, and given that there were like 5 students total, it was great to get some individual attention. I will definitely be back, and I might sign up for a package and save a little money. read more

I really enjoyed the basic Ashtanga class I droped in on at Atlanta Yoga. The studio is open and has the option of praticing on hardwood or carpet. I am looking forward to their Mysore classes. read more

The lovely thing about yoga studios is that they are each so unique, just like yoga students, I suppose. Every teacher has their own preference for how they lead, and every student has theirs. Bad news is that Atlanta Yoga is not the spot for me. Good news is that they've been around for a long time and have a loyal following, so they might be the spot for you. So take my review as a reflection of my own preferences and biases, but perhaps take the chance to experience it for yourself as well. Atlanta Yoga is located in the King Plow Arts Center. They validate parking in the deck, and they'll send an email with detailed instructions about how to find them your first time. This was much appreciated, since the Center is a bit of a maze. The first part of the experience that was a turn off for me was the very unwelcoming atmosphere when I walked in. When you open the door to Atlanta Yoga, you walk immediately into the studio, and it's not exactly clear where to put your things or what the "process" is. When the teacher finally came over, I had to introduce myself first - it just wasn't a very warm way to begin. The other students also looked about as hostile as possible. It was clear I was the "new" girl. The atmosphere also contributed to the cold feeling of the studio to me. The studio looks very different than the one pictured here on yelp. It's a very industrial looking loft with an exposed cement floor, but quite small, with some weird beams and a lofted area that block your view of the instructor. There's no music, no candles, no soft lighting, no good smell, or any of the other nice relaxing touches that I appreciate about the other studios I've enjoyed. Additionally, the train tracks run *right* by the studio's windows, meaning that during your final meditation, you get to enjoy sounds of dozens of rail cars clanging over the tracks just feet away. The class quickly filled up after I got there, and we were basically on top of each other. The studio is quite small, so there wasn't room to spread out. And, the other students weren't that conscientious of the tight space, so I nearly got smacked in the head during a few sun salutations. I've been regularly practicing yoga for about three months now, with formal classes twice a week and at home practice almost every day. So, while I'm still relatively new and not that flexible, I know the basic poses and basically what I'm doing. However, it's a good thing I selected a beginner or "Foundations" class, because I was totally lost. The instructor would model each pose once, and then you were pretty much on your own as her instructions were very bare bones. She did walk around and correct poses, which I always appreciate, but when she offered props when accommodations were needed, she just handed them to me, with no instruction. I prefer a yoga teacher who walks me verbally through every pose, with detailed instructions. For example, I want to know if I should be using my right or left foot, where specifically it should be placed, and where I should be feeling a stretch. Instead of being told to just "turn your feet," I want to hear "turn your right foot so that your right toes face the back wall. Your feet should be slightly wider than shoulder width apart. You should feel a slight stretch behind your knee" etc. That just wasn't there for me here. Another example of the lack of detail occurred when we were told we were going to be doing a balancing pose, and we should stand by the wall if we would need it. Well, how am I supposed to know if I'm going to need the wall if you haven't even told me what the pose is going to be? I think they believe this class classifies as a beginner class because they run through the poses/salutations, and then bring the class to a halt to stop and ask if anyone has questions. I found this format jarring and disruptive, and it did not provide clarity to when I was actually doing the stretches. So, overall, I'll be sticking with Wide Angle Yoga where the classes are capped at five students per instructor, the studio is warm, clean, and inviting, the other students are happy and supportive, and the instructor is welcoming and provides detailed instructions on how to do the poses correctly and works closely with each student to ensure they are both pushing themselves and have the accommodations they need to do the stretches safely. read more

I have been going to Atlanta Yoga for almost a year now regularly. I take Anusara yoga classes there from Gina. I love it! Gina is a great teacher, enthusiastic and very willing to work with you on any issues you might have. Anusara is different from Ashtanga, more alignment based and you get into the poses for longer. Generally, the Anusara classes are appropriate for all levels, so do not be afraid to give it a go. The studio space itself is nice with hardwood floors and a loft-like interior. read more

I popped in one evening for an Anusara class with Gina and it was great! Gina is an amazing yoga instructor and it doesn't get much better. The space is nice, not as big as some other studios I've been to, but it's definitely functional loft. It was confusing trying to find the location and parking is on the street. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the class but apparently went to the class that was celebrating the 10th anniversary of Anusara Yoga. So we did 10 rounds of everything. 10 rounds of Sun Salutations, 10 rounds of back bends, everything. I was NOT in good enough shape for this class but it was still an excellent class. Just don't go unless you've been practicing yoga for a little while. It's a little intense. :-D read more

The owner seemed unpleasant to deal with, and was not willing to meet the entire commitment of the living social offer that I had purchased. The one class I took with her was rather disappointing, all she did was sit on the floor the entire time and speak out the asanas. I've been to all the major yoga studios in the city, and this is by far the most disappointing experience of all, Didn't have a welcoming feel to it. read more

Pretty nice studio and the hanging yoga is awesome. Makes me feel like I've realigned my spine every time I get done.

If you've never taken a yoga class with Phil Davis, you are missing out. I have been doing yoga for 7-8 years, and got injured last summer from too much hot power yoga ( and very likely, my own poor alignment). I had done anusara yoga classes early in my yoga "career" and had taken a few of Phil's classes at another studio in town, so I decided to go see him at Atlanta yoga Shala and I'm so glad I did. He is patient, light hearted, knowledgeable and passionate about yoga. Also, point of clarification from the previous reviews... The level 1/2 classes are not really for beginners. The website clearly indicates that there are beginners clasees, the level 1, meaning you know the basics, and then level 1/2, meaning that you're beyond basics. I will echo the other reviews in that Gina is not great to talk to on the phone or email with. The studio is small, and gina doesnt actually even live in Atlanta. She's a very highly regarded anusara teacher but is a little less warm and fuzzy and fun than some other anusara teachers that I've had. But Phil is as warm as they get, so check him out. Crystal is also teaching anusara there now too... I haven't been to her classes there yet, but I used to take classes from her in Tallahassee and she's really laid back and fun. The 4 review is because some of the smaller classes are being taught now in a back room that needs to be yogi-fied a bit. Right now, it's white walls, blue carpet and uneven floors. It does the job, but I hope they can get some paint and better lighting and deal with the floor issue soon. read more

I am currently doing my teacher training with Elizabeth at Atlanta Yoga and I am very pleased. I learn something new - sometimes multiple things - every class. Her approach to teaching Yoga and teaching potential new Yoga instructors how to teach Yoga is unique and precise. I would highly recommend her classes to any and all looking for a deeper practice. It doesn't seem to matter what location we are practicing in, she doesn't miss a beat. read more

If you are looking for a place to practice yoga and specifically interested in Ashtanga yoga, Atlanta Yoga is a great studio to at least visit. My practice here has developed my ability to enter into and out of asanas (poses) without bring injury and are technically sound, increased my stamina and body awareness, and given me a entry into the "work" of yoga. Yoga is not just a physical exercise here; it is a practice that connects the body, mind, and spirit and brings about "union" that yoga means. I am also in the 200 RYT and recommend it for any who is a mental health professional. Elizabeth Rogers is a counselor and an analyst and weaves yoga into therapy as a yoga therapist. Give it a try and learn to define Mula Bandha, build core muscles, increase flexibility and strength, and realize the power of the breath. Saturdays at Atlanta Yoga are also a treat, Iyengar with Scott Schroeder. He is precise in his teaching and your practice will improve. This classes together are a powerful combo! read more
