I guess they think everyone is so desperate to sell their cars that they will take any offer. I have a 2 year old car with only 8,600 miles on it in perfect condition and they dropped their original offer from $27,600 to $20K because that is what I owe on it. I was nervous about the whole process and the paperwork involved especially since I had over 2 years left on the loan, the car was registered in Maryland (and in my maiden name) and the registration was set to expire in a few weeks. The staff at CarMax could not have been more pleasant, helpful, and kind to me. They explained what extra paperwork I'd need handy to make the process smooth and I got more money than I expected to get for my car (the best news!). We ended up having to go back a second time since I was missing my marriage certificate (to prove why the name on my title was different than on my Driver's License) but it was such an incredibly easy process. They also were not pushy at all trying to get me a car to buy that day (something I was also concerned about). I only had to explain once that we were trying to downsize to a single car and they never asked about it again. My husband and I had such a positive experience selling we are already thinking that we'll be back in a few years to trade in his car when the time comes to buy a new one and we may buy from them because of how positive the experience was.

They use shady tactics to justify their lowball offer. I was told a 30-mile discrepancy in my odometer reading was the reason why $5000 was knocked off their offer. They also cited a bunch of other small stuff like a slight smoke smell, a scuff, and the like for reducing their offer more. I suspect they think that most people who go there really need the money and will take whenever is offered. Get your car appraised elsewhere. It didn't help that Kenneth Regus, the WBAC rep, also broke a dome light during the test drive. They are careless, and they are shady.
