After attending an event, my husband and I were in search of some late-ish night eats. I say "ish" because since the pandemic, there aren't that many options past 8:30 on a Wednesday night, like a good place, not a chain. You know? Neat Bird has been on my list, they were nearby and when I asked my husband to check their hours, I was very surprised to discover they closed at midnight, so Neat Bird, here we come! - Parking - Street parking which is free or I believe there is a parking garage for Summit Pointe, free of charge (can't say for sure), but maybe similar concept to Town Center in VB where all the parking garages are free. So maybe same here? - Vibe - There is a reception area, so wait to be seated. They either have booth seats, tables and chairs or some tables with the chair/booth bench combo. They have a beautiful mural of a giant rooster on the main wall. I liked him, but he looked a little angry. Maybe pissed that you're eating his friends LOL. Another art piece of a woman painted in comic form eating chicken on a mirror. Lots of art, lots of yellow tones but also contrasting bright colors. I dig it! - Noms - On their menu, they have a variety of apps, salads and bowls, chicken sandos, fried chicken pieces and even roasted chicken. They have a whole cocktail menu, as well as, a whiskey menu, and also beer. We chose the following: Pork belly burnt ends - these 4 words was enough to order these. It's a total Asian vibe. I felt like they were more cooked then burnt. Just slightly a little overcooked for my taste, but the flavors were amazing. It was delicious and loved the accompanying veg that it was sitting on top of. Fried chicken - I opted for the 2 piece, dark meat, but was completely shocked that it was only $5. It kinda does make sense if you think about it as $2.50 a piece, because if it was more than that, I would have been almost more mad, but with inflation and the way things have been skyrocketing, it was just shocking (and refreshing) to see that I could actually fill my belly with 2 pieces of chicken for only $5 when I can't even get a latte for less than $7 these days. So get the chicken. It was a nice crispy skin, and not too thick with batter, juicy and an interesting, but tasty seasoning blend. I asked for 2 dipping sauces. I went with miso and the hot honey. I felt like there was no miso, so could they have made a mistake, but it was definitely more fruity. Whatever it was, it was interesting, but I liked it more than the hot honey. Coleslaw - I ordered this to eat with my chicken. I need that meat and veg balance. I like my coleslaw the traditional way, just straight up cabbage and carrots. Neat Bird's is a bit more bougie with more veg like peppers and onions with a creamy mayo base. I personally didn't care for it and probably opt for a diff side the next time. Hot Honey Chicken Sandwich - my husband ordered this based on the server's rec. She said it was most popular. He also asked for their house Buffalo-like sauce. He didn't save me a bite, but he said that personally, he thought the house hot sauce was tastier than the hot honey. It comes with waffle fries. Service was top notch! Our server was such a sweetheart and was really attentive the entire night! It was pretty empty in the dining area for a Wednesday night, but the bar seemed like it was pretty full. Things to note: - They automatically charge (can't remember what it was called) something like "Merchant fee" or "Transaction fee" at the very bottom. I asked our server what that was, and it's basically the processing fee for paying by credit card. She said, they were trying to be more transparent with their pricing so they pass it on to the customer. However, she said that if you pay cash, they can remove the fee. - they are open late! Did I mention that already?! Overall, solid fried chicken and SO affordable! Now don't get any ideas, Neat Bird. Me and my husband went for lunch one day. We got the chicken sandwich and the chicken bites (forgot the name). The chicken with both were too salty! They gave decent portions but we couldn't finish because of the saltiness. There is a difference between seasoned and salty. These were almost inedible. Also, I'm not sure if they're short staffed but there was a man there waiting tables who looked like a customer off the street. No uniform or neat attire. The establishment wasn't very clean either. For weeks, I've been hearing about Neatbird. Now it is about 45 minutes from my home and that's with no traffic. But hey, I had an event nearby for a free gelato, so this seemed like a fine time. I started with a Falcon Smash beer from Richmond. I did have water, but their beverage glasses are pretty small, the bartender had to fill it up 3 or 4 times. The menu was a little tough to narrow down. I was thinking chicken strips, which are made form boneless, skinless thigh. But I wasn't really feeling the fried thing. So I went with the half roast chicken with hot honey carrots. I also added a side of mac and cheese. Now the food did take about 20 or so minutes to come, which was a decent amount of time, but not a huge deal, I was in no hurry. The chicken wasn't enormous, but it was cooked spot on. Juicy meat, skin was a little crisp. And it was covered in a dark jus with hot honey and some fresh thyme, there was a little sweet and heat in the gravy. Really nice. and with the long thin carrots, that gravy was perfect. I could have asked for double carrots, they were so good. The mac was fine, it was made with cavatappi, the long corkscrew shaped pasta. It was seasoned pretty well, this wasn't just a plain cheese sauce. Very enjoyable, and not drowned in sauce either. As for the decor, it was kept simple. There are no pictures on the wall. However there is a huge painted cock/rooster on the back wall. I sat at the bar and they had two TVs. One had The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross on and the other had killer whales and sharks on. Props for some Bob Ross as I ate my happy little supper. I have to eat gluten free and so always looking for places we can go out to eat. We decided to try Neat Bird since we've walked past it several times. I've been craving fried chicken and it's hard to find it gluten free, but they have it here! The coating is delicious and crispy! Love the seasoning they bring out to the table too! We were actually offered a gluten free menu when we were sat which was nice. I ordered the pound of nuggets and had leftovers to take home. Waffles fries were decent, but I went for the chicken, so no biggie. Service was very friendly all around. Food came out in a reasonable amount of time. The sandwich come out whole so we asked if the had a sharper knife to cut it. She said no. We butchered the sandwich trying to cut in half. When paying the bill we noticed an Admin fee. Now I've seen it all, an upscale chicken joint! I was pleasantly surprised that I was actually very good. Everything came out hot and my wedge salad was crisp. The wait staff were friendly and knowledgeable on the menu. I hadn't seen a good chicken sandwich between two slices of bread since my mama fixed me a brown bag special for my Greyhound bus ride from FL to SC when I was a kid. The restaurant is well laid out with tables, booths and outside seating so there's plenty of room for a large group. They have a very extensive whisky selection and the only downside was that their Heineken came in tiny bottles which made me look like a giant baby drinking. As I tend to eat vegan food, I specifically love that about this place. The manager even came over to ask how vegan I am because the food I ordered came with honey. Talk about WOW! Now that we got that out the way, Neat Bird was really great. I stumbled across this restaurant on accident and I'm glad I did. It's pretty straight forward what they offer--chicken and whiskey. Whereas, I didn't drink the whiskey, the chicken plates were wonderful. I ordered the deviled eggs, Hot Honey Chicken (sub Beyond meat patty), the Henrietta, and banana pudding. The entrees were served with waffle fries that put Chick-fil-A to shame! The deviled eggs were missing paprika but I think that's more of a preference. The Henrietta was delicious and so large that I only ate half of it and the rest for dinner. The banana pudding, my goodness was it THE BOMB! The hot honey chicken (sub vegan) was so great . I wish it was dipped more but I believe the vegan patty might have soaked up more sauce. I also tried all of their house made sauces. First visit and last. My husband and I visited for lunch. We both ordered a pot pie because the waitress said it was delicious. Well, first of all, it took about 30 minutes to get it. Deviled eggs were just that nothing to brag about. I tried the nuggets and fries for my entree not too much seasoning and no salt on the fries. My friends joined me one ordered a crispy chicken sandwich said it was okay and my other friend ordered the hot honey wings also said her food was pretty good. The service was okay waitress seemed distracted not sure why because the place was pretty empty. The decor is nice and simple. They have a full bar and happy hour specials. Really nice spot off Volvo parkway. The atmosphere was nice and the staff was attentive even though we had a large party. Started off with a house old fashioned and was delicious. The deviled egg was good but not something I would go in and order again. Out of everything on the menu I decided on the hot honey chicken sandwich. I added bacon because why not, bacon makes everything better. Presentation really didn't knock me off my socks. I opted for tater tots instead of waffle fries because Im not a big fan of waffle fries. The service was really fast. The chicken didn't look that appetizing from first glance but was anxious to give it a shot. The sandwich consisted of a fried chicken thigh tossed in hot honey with pickles in between 2 pieces of Texas toast. My first bite was underwhelming. The chicken definitely lacked seasoning and the hot honey really didn't carry it to make it better. The chicken wasn't crispy or that juicy. The tater tots were good and salted very well. The chicken is oh so good! Our server, Brian, was awesome. He said we do chicken and whiskey, and we do chicken well - indeed they do! I went here to celebrate a friend. We both loved the atmosphere and the drinks and food. The horseapple is delicious. It's made with the spirit of choice, apple, and horseradish - I know, I know, but it was really good. I got the gluten-free version of their fried chicken and was so pleased! They even use a separate fryer to prevent cross-contamination. The dipping sauces are good too - I really liked the miso ginger and spicy honey. The deviled eggs were alright. The greens were kale, which I love, and had bacon, but a little salty for my taste. Next time, I'll get a salad or slaw. The mac and cheese was good - it's not baked, looks like it's made with a roux, but really good flavor. The blueberry white chocolate bread pudding was divine!! When I saw this new spot on yelp I just had to try it out with a carryout order. There are parking spots in front of the building and a parking garage directly across the street. We were lucky to grab the first spot in front. The restaurant is really nice or cozy inside. Plenty of seating with a separate bar are to the right. We picked up our order from the bar and was back in our car within a few minutes. The food was just ok to me. I got the 3 piece chicken, pound of nuggets and Deviled eggs. The thigh piece was just a little bit salty, but I still thought it was good. However, the leg seem slightly uncooked and tasted odd. If I was dining in it probably would've been an easy fix with just replacing the piece, but since that wasn't the case it kinda ruined the meal. The nuggets were really good. The deviled eggs weren't bad, but was a little bland. I am from Louisiana, so I tend to like my food more seasoned. Many others would probably like it just fine. read more

On Sat. night we went to Neat Bird in Chesapeake. We've talked about going for months and finally did it. Would I go back? Yes. Would it be my 1st choice? No. The only reason I would go back is because I want to try the chicken pot pie. They sold out of this on Sat night. Our waitress was good not great. The other wait staff I observed was amazing! I feel like if all you specialize in or severe is chicken it should be the best chicken ever. Its ok but it's not the best and expected the best for such a specific menu. First I will start with the good. The manager was nice. It is a laidback atmosphere. Now my first mixed drink I had to send it back because it tasted nothing but of tonic water it had absolutely no flavor, my second drink wasn't that great but it was extremely strong and a slushie so it was easier to "manage." I got the chicken cutlet sandwich and immediately upon my first bite knew it was undercooked by the rubbery bite/feel of the meat. It was not good I did have to send it back however I did get pushback about it just being pink because of the marinade they use that didn't sit well with me honestly plus you know the difference between undercooked chicken and a tone from marinade. NeatBird was pretty neat! They only have chicken it seems, but if you're in the mood this is the place to be. They prepare the chicken in numerous ways, the tenders are great with the seasoning they bring to the table. Cobb salad was well adorned with bleu cheese and others. The bourbon selection is vast but pricey. The price is most likely fair but coming from the bourbon capital, I'd stick with beer prices. Japanese whiskey was fun to try though! Highly recommend coming here or other locations in the plaza when you're in town. read more

Mac and cheese- better off with kraft ( he did warn us about this item though) tots- THE BEST ITEM ON THE MENU! toast- stale bread, nothing major no matter how it's fluffed on the menu. drink menu ( adult)- nothing to wow over ( could be great for a whiskey and vodka lover) drink menu geared towards that but not too many to choose from. decided to check this place out, since it's pretty new. i will say , this probably isn't a place i would frequent. so i will start off with our server , she was okay . i asked for a new cup and clearly stated bc it was dirty , she asked me why i needed a new cup. i'm just going to assume she didn't hear the dirty part. we started off with the cheese curds and deviled eggs . the cheese curds were good , the deviled eggs ... not so much . me and my daughter shared the chicken tenders and my fiancé ordered the chicken sandwich and the nuggs. i wasn't too impressed with the tenders. they're a good size , but not too good in flavor . to me , they just weren't seasoned all that well . i will say the restaurant itself is very nice and the new chesapeake town center. but i can't say that i see myself driving out there to this restaurant in particular to get a meal . read more

The first moments were perfectly fine. The waitress seemed nice and also the atmosphere. Then our drinks came and one had so much ice, it looked like a snow cone with zero alcohol and didn't even taste well. We told the waitress, and she admitted that's how their drinks are done. I would've thought a better response would've been...Can we make you a different drink or redo this one? After waiting about 5 minutes she finally brought the plates for our appetizer that had been sitting in front of us, and one plate had a large clump of dried food from a prior customer. The food was average, extremely messy but not too bad. Overall, it was not a pleasant experience and they were not even busy. Probably, four tables with two waitresses and a bartender. The waitress stood over us while we paid the bill and tipped her. Yes, I still did the minimum 20% tip even though the service was bad. I expected better guest/customer service. We were in town visiting family. I was excited to eat at a restaurant that offered a gluten free menu. This was not the place. My chicken was heavily coated in chili powder ( I wasn't aware of any spices). Even though the other chicken was moist, the coating was dry, the mac and cheese was dry. Our waitress looked like she was going to a goth club wearing a shirt long enough to only cover her chest while her stomach was hanging out. She never re-filled our drinks. Maybe it was because we only ordered chicken nuggets and fries and split it because it was a lot of food but our waters were empty for a while and the service was way more attentive with the other customers (we believe it was because they were higher checks). The food was amazing. I have a gluten allergy and I haven't had fried chicken in probably 10 years. I got the hot honey sandwich. The chicken was crispy and the bun was as perfect.
