We stumbled on this place after coming face to face to a backyard bully after shortly arriving to the city from out of town and parked the car by the baseball stadium, so to calm ourselves down, we went in for a drink and before we know it, we were there for the next two hours, lol. There were arcade games, board games, Jenga, table tennis, craft beer, Star Wars, extensive collection of comic books -- this is paradise for all hipsters and the . A lot of reviews call this a dive bar. This is not a dive bar. Dive bars don't have projector screen video games. Dive bars don't have a comic book collection. Dive bars don't have X-wing and Tie Fighter models hanging from the ceiling. Dive bars don't have a laidback and friendly clientele that never looks askance at anyone who comes in. Dive bars don't have floors that you could eat off of. In fact, dive bars don't even have tables you can eat off of. Dive bars don't have bartenders that know their beers (they have bartenders that get annoyed when you order anything more complicated than a beer and a shot). I went to Neil's Bar with my boyfriend on St. Patty's day. I had to pee really bad and the bouncer was like the bathroom is for customers only. Which is fine, I was going to pee and then buy a drink. I dont know whether the bouncer has never seen colored people in this bar before but he followed us in a nearly yelled at us to go buy a drink. My boyfriend went to the bar to buy a drink and the man physically stopped from going to the bathroom, and then told us to get out. I went to buy a drink with my boyfriend and he still kicked us out. I don't understand how "bathrooms are for customers" means you cant buy a drink and get out. I had to pee, how is that a crime? I am a regular customer at Neil's, I have been there several times in the past year. We will never step foot in that place again. read more

I can play arcades all night. My favorite was the 1982 game called hide and go seek where there's only one sofa in the screen and I don't know what was going on in Atari at the time but they never find you behind the one sofa. The other games are really fun and I like the nerd Factor All Over the Bar. Very casual place with a lot of cool stuff to see and there's some sort of Taco food stand right outside if you're hungry. read more

Came from NOLA to Houston for a show this weekend and Neil's was our FAVORITE bar! Great beer choices, free gaming, and tons of awesome comics?! Couldn't get any better! Also had a sicc game of ping pong. 100% would recommend. Stayed in the heart of downtown at Club Quarters Hotel and it was an easy walk! Cool concept... dive bar... door guy was nice... there was a smell to the place... kinda smelled like an old dingy basement and restroom mixed with disinfect and fabuloso... so I think we went on a busy night because everyone who walked by kept saying how busy it was... it's probably a cool place when it's not so busy and you can play the games and enjoy your friends... So it's cool how they have square and you can see your purchases and stuff but they hold your credit card behind the bar and it's just like all laid out on the counter... seems like an unsafe thing and an easy way to lose a card especially when it's busy... but I guess if it works for them... bartenders are good... make nice strong drinks but like I said I think it was unusually busy and they just seemed stressed and swamped trying to get everyone's order and stuff... It's a cool place to hang without being overly crowded... I'm taking points off for the odor and the air conditioning... also for the poor layout and seating options... also another point off for this one guy who tried to pick pocket someone in our group... read more

What a neat little joint! It was initially a little hard to find on a dark rainy night, but thanks to GPS, we made it in. It wasn't a busy night so it made it easier to figure out if it was a place my friends and I would enjoy or not. We made our way over to the bar and got a round of drinks, beer, apple cider, and whiskey sour. We sat around for a while trying to decide if we wanted to wait for the game system to clear up or if we wanted to find a board game to play. We picked up something but figured it would be cool to try to join the group of probably 10 behind us in a game of Cards Against Humanity. It worked! and we found out that half of the group had just met by joining in as we had just done. Everyone got along well and we all had a blast. There was a taco guy outside that seems to cater for the bar, so I got 3 tacos. Besides that guy being super cool, there was much regret in the purchase. For 3, I think it was almost 20 bucks WHAT! They were decent size, got decent amount of meat and sides (rice and salsa) but it was not an amazing taste you'd think from someone who seems to make them so often? So boo on that. Hands down, my favorite hangout. Drinks are great. Bartenders are so nice, Ian's such a sweetie. Bar backs are constantly swooping in to clear your table so you've got plenty of room for your board games. I love this place to no end, it's my default hangout. They've put in two emulator cabinets in their ping pong room, which doubles as a private party room(the door being the entrance to the Tardis) and they've got 3 tvs for game setups, ranging from N64, Super Nintendo, and the Xbox(untouched, haha.) Comics everywhere, waiting for you to pluck them from their bags, and boxes of various board games and card games under their shelves. There's also scifi books in a corner of the bar as well! I highly suggest camping out early, say, 10 or 11, if you've got a big group on the weekends. I'm not totally sure, but I think they have events from time to time, which are always fun, and I've never been offended by anyone there, except for the occasional "normies" that stroll in looking for a novelty bar. read more

Won't be my go to place but definitely will be back to Neil's. Neil's Bahr is an arcade, dive bar, and feels as such with dark lighting and aged seats. It definitely has an arcade feel, there are several board games, video games, TVs and Ping pong. It's also dog friendly so I got to pet a corgi while I waited for my drink to be made. Drinks are strong and cheap, the vibe is laid back and at 10pm on a Saturday, there were still places to sit available. We left around 11 and it was packed. Highly recommend the tacos out back, there is a DIY topping bar after you get your food and the food was delicious! I think a plate with 2 tacos, rice and beans was $9. Strong drinks, food and a competitive game of Uno made this a fun night cap after a game at BBVA stadium, thanks Neil's! Cons: the bathrooms! Bathrooms were filled with writing/ graffiti. Really wanted to like this place... catchy pun of a name... fan of comics and stuff. Then I went with a group of friends for a bachelor party... got mediocre service. Whatever. Went back with a larger group, it had been advertised on facebook... and the manager asked us to close our tabs and leave... because they had 10 people gathered for trivia. Granted, you have to support your loyals... but instead of inviting our group to stay, or join, they asked us to leave. I tried to talk to the owner, and instead of listening to my concern, he said "no one tells me how to run my business... I have enough money, I don't need you here." He also cited a member of the group who said something sarcastic about the bar on Facebook (2 weeks before) as a good reason to kick us out... at 6:30 pm. The group of us (40 or so) left, and took our business (that night, and in the future) elsewhere. Niels Bohr (for whom the bar is partially named) once said "Your theory is crazy, but it's not crazy enough to be true." This is probably my favorite dive bar ever! I love the punny name. Neils Bohr anyone? Anyways, this bar is great. Super chill. Being an avid comic book collector, it was nice to see that they had racks and racks of comic books. They also had tons of sci fi books, board games, an arcade game, a ping pong table, Nintendo 64s, and an SNES. The drinks were not too expensive either. I really wanted to like this place. Back before I moved to the EaDo area, I was constantly stalking up on it via Facebook, Google News, etc. just praying for something that would confirm my investment opportunity. Therefore, I had really high expectations of this place before it was even really open. They met them all. This place is such an interesting little piece of Austin in Houston, with a "it's really cool to be nerdy" vibe. It has all sorts of things to keep you entertained, from a ping-pong table, to comic books, to either the Simpsons or the Matrix constantly on. The only negatives about this place are that once you get over the whole really fun themed thing, the drinks are just okay, and the crowd is really hit or miss - depending on the time you're there, it could be a really fun, huge crowd, or it could be trending towards dead. If you're coming to people watch though, you'll definitely find some people to watch! read more

Basically, Neil's Bahr is awesome. It's a well-executed themed bar in the up-and-coming EaDo area with a fun atmosphere, very friendly staff, and interesting (in a good way) patrons. But what really makes it so great? First, there is a reasonable variety of Texas beers on tap (including their neighbors at 8th Wonder). The selection of bottled beers is solid too, and they have plenty of other options available for those who choose not to drink beer for some reason. The best part though is the $3 daily specials, which involve a rotating selection of bottled beer and liquor (or possibly whatever Neil happens to have too much of and needs to get rid of at that particular time). Additionally, Neil's Bahr has a pretty solid steak night, and other days they still have Pablo on the grill cooking up hot dogs, hamburgers, etc. It's all pretty good. Also, there is a ton of stuff to do there (you know, besides being social and actually talking to people). Aside form karaoke (Wednesdays) and trivia nights (Mondays?), there are multiple gaming systems with popular multiplayer classics available to play, like Smash Brothers, Goldeneye, and Mortal Kombat. Sometimes, they host impromptu tournaments, and sometimes, those who win the tournaments get free stuff, like a credit on their bar tab or gift cards or whatever.* Still not convinced Neil's Bahr is awesome? Here are some more things to consider (bonus lightning round style): - Simpsons episodes, sci-fi and fantasy movies, or just plain weird stuff playing on the TVs behind the bar - Random Star Wars stuff strewn about, including a large-scale AT-AT among the liquor bottles behind the bar - Comic books, magazines, and books literally all over the place - Arcade game featuring a ton of arcade classics, including my favorite, Dig Dug (don't judge) - Comfy couches, origin unknown - Fry's Electronics ads posted in the restrooms (well, the men's restroom . . .) - One time, the ONLY large screen TV in the place was playing Sharknado 2 With all of the generic, mundane, characterless bars out there, it's good to know a place like Neil's Bahr exists. Finally ventured over to Neil's Bahr and I'm glad I did! It's a chill place to slurp down spirits and challenge your friends to games (for the next round of drinks!). The setup can be somewhat of a maze to get through when it's packed but the bar is pretty much at one end and the game consoles and tables at the other. While I was there, I saw games on the N64, Gamecube, Playstation 2, and a game of cards of humanity on one of the tables. Great selection of local beers, including Shiner of course... Any place which lets me enjoy a gin-based drink named after one of the more successful Sith (the Palpatini - give it a try) while reading the comic version of Splinter of the Mind's Eye (if you know what this is, please let me give you an e-fist bump) and also while attempting to reach Star Road in the SNES version of Super Mario World (my all-time fav SNES game) - well, that place is all right by me. so, I had a flat bike tire and wasn't even expecting to come across this beautiful, life-saving gem but now it's definitely going to be my chill hangout when I need to relax and actually have a day off. I literally walked here with my bike wobbling next to me so I was slightly frustrated but this place turned my whole day around. Stephanie, Ian & Blake were so awesome at offering things to make me feel so comfortable after I just got this bike 2 days ago but I was riding in from by UH main & we all know how hood & unmanageable sidewalks can be. even the customers helped me take my mind off things & some helped with my flat tire. everyone there is just full of great vibes and I felt super happy to stumble across it. if you're ever in eado just stop here, Pablo the food guy outside, had the best looking food I had ever seen and it was also inexpensive (he gives you rice and beans with every purchase). If your going look at all aspects of what makes a great bar, Neil's Bahr is the best bar in Houston. Great staff, chill atmosphere, good music, great movies on the flat screens. The bar regulars are some pretty cool people. Plus its pretty fun geek moment when Magic the Gathering is happening at the bar. Drink service really fast even when the bar is slammed. The bar tenders are super friendly and take time to make friends out of customers. Robert the bar tender has a secret drink book with themed drinks like "pikachu", "Super Mario", & "Death Star". The tap selection is really good, they have a good solid variety of beer. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, & Saturday has Pablo on the grill outside- it's the best bar food you could ever get. It's inexpensive and incredibly well done. Other times you can order out from Franks Pizza or for Chinese, they deliver super fast. Monday Trivia is packed, Karaoke Wednesday is super fun, and Sunday is unofficially Magic the Gathering. If you have a Magic deck you can challenge Robert at the bar. Parking can be tricky, especially during concerts at Ware House Live or Dynamo games, but lot parking $5-10 cheap for downtown. If you park across Neil's on the street don't pay the homeless guy with a flag. Although it's comical to watch people pay a guy just because he has an orange flag. Overall the entire staff is a lot of fun- management is great and fun, bar tenders are chill, & it's always a fun time at Neil's Bahr. It's a lot "It's always Sunny", just Houston. Chill, no pretentious attitude, easygoing kind of bar. You just need a place to hang out? Here you go. I feel that since they don't have any specialty cocktails or food I can't judge by much, except for what I've seen and experienced... here we go: Sci-fi fans and comic book nerds, and gamers rejoice, this bar is like heaven. For everyone else, it's still heaven because whether or not you know the difference between Marvel or D.C. comics, it's okay. You're going to have a great time here. The overall vibe of this place really matches the EaDo neighborhood. It was packed on a Friday night, but we could still find a table. They have a selection of beers and can make you a basic mixed drink. There isn't any food- However there is a guy on the patio outside grilling up a storm. There also isn't a drink menu, which kind of surprised me a bit. I am used to bars having their own specialty drinks and whatnot, but it's not that kind of place. It's a sit down, grab a beer, and chill with your friends kind of place. Which is okay by me. I feel like I don't have much to review on since they don't have any craft cocktails... Anyway, the place is spacious and there are booths, tables, and couches.. perfect for talking with a group of friends or playing board games... which they have! There's Cards against Humanity, apples to apples, monopoly, and others. There is a T.V. hooked to a Nintendo 64 where you can play some games, as well as a arcade game across the room. Can you make a high enough score on pac-man to make it on the board? There are vintage comics for you to peruse through, and also other books and things that you can do while you hang out here. There are about three TVs. One was playing Simpsons, another was playing a Star Trek movie, and another was playing the Karate Kid. Star War's decorations are everywhere. I like this bar a lot because it is so unique. I've never seen another bar quite like Neil's. Obviously, judging by it's name (a play on Neils Bohr - famed physicist), it's a nerd haven. It's usually kept pretty dark, but there are several old-school video game consoles that anyone can play with classics such as Super Smash Bros, Mariokart, Goldeneye, Mortal Kombat, etc. There are some comfy couches and chairs to lounge in while you game to your heart's content - while making sure you share, of course. Don't be a jerk! There are some old school arcade games as well. Apparently they have some kind of emulator thing so that you can play all sorts of games from just 1 machine. One of you nerds can explain that to me over a drink. Video games not your thing? Plenty of board games laying around for you to choose from and several bigger tables that people can fit around to play. There's always a game of Cards Against Humanity going on, and we'll try our hand at the chess board when it's available. Games not your scene either? There's a wall of comic books for you to peruse. Not into comics? This a shelf of books. Like real books for real people to use their brains. Oh, you don't like video games or using your eyeballs to read? There's a ping pong table in a back room. Go play that! AND SHARE! What? You're a complete weirdo that doens't like any of those things? Well, just hang out by the bar and have a drink. The bar (and whole place) has some pretty cool decorations that make you feel like you're in the 80s-90s again. One tv is always playing the Simpsons, and one is always playing some kind of iconic sci-fi and/or action or cult classic movie. You also like food? There's usually a dude grilling something delicious on the front porch for reasonable prices. Most recently I bought a taco for $4. Also, the wonderful servers give out bottles of water for free! The only reasons I give Neil's 4 stars instead of 5 aren't really the establishment's fault but several things detract from the experience. The 5 or 6 times I've been there (weekends mostly) it's been super crowded and you have to wait in unorganized clumps for who gets to play games/ping pong next. Also, the parking situation is pretty lame. There is minimal street parking nearby, but there are paid lots (either $5 or $10) nearby. I wouldn't wander too far looking for street parking. 2 of my friends have had their cars broken into while parked on some of the lesser used side streets. read more

I really wanted to like this place. It's basically a bar that caters towards the 90s "nerd culture." When I got there i had to circle to find a parking spot. While there was plenty of parking in the area, most of the lots were charging $10. No thanks. I found one about a block away without too much difficulty so that was good. I walk into the dark cavern of a bar to see all the things I was expecting... nerds, games, couches, and a bar. It was pretty much what I would imagine the basement of the Lamda Lamda Lamda fraternity to look like. However, I felt a little like an outcast. It seems that most people who were here, were here with a group of friends. Most of the tables were taken with people in the middle of games and the video games had people on them. I know they have arcade games somewhere... but I didn't see them. There did seem to be another room but it was blocked off... no idea why though. The moral of this story is... come with friends to hang out and drink if you don't have a house where you could just do this already. Don't come expecting to meet new people, the one group we tried to integrate with wern't too happy about us trying to join their game of Cards Against Humanity. The night itself is a story within itself that has little to do with the business, so perhaps I just need to give this place another try with different friends. This used to be Walker Street Gastropub, but has either gone through a new owner or remade itself. Either way, it's a bit more divey and just alcohol. The selection of beers, especially Houston beers, is still outstanding. We came before a Dynamo game for a few beers. Neil's had a guy out on the patio cooking up tacos ($4/ea), burgers ($8), and hotdogs ($4). I didn't catch the chef's name, but this guy just earned Neil's another star. The burger meat was ground by hand and the taco meat was chopped by hand from great quality meat. The taco meat was very well seasoned (on the spicy side). Unfortunately, the we didn't have enough stomach space to try the hot dogs. Also, there were about 8 different toppings + 6 different sauces--the combinations are insane. Options include mango salsa, homemade guac, homemade pico. Yum yum. The bar was pretty busy, it took a while to get a beer, but after a little patience the bartender got to us, and we got our drinks quickly. The only negative is that they use square, and the tipping options start at 30%, unless you want to go through the trouble of entering your own tip. read more

My friends and I went here for the first time, and I had a good time. Several people on these reviews said that parking is bad, but it wasn't for us. Drink prices were okay, slightly cheaper than the clubs I go to. It was overall pretty chill. My friends and I were playing Pokémon Monopoly most of the time and after that we went outside to get food from the gentleman who cooks outside and he was so sweet! The burgers were good. I was very excited to try this place. From seeing the Yelp pictures I knew was had to try it out. Upon arrival the bouncer was super friendly and asked how our night was and politely told us where everything was before entering! Once we entered it was like stepping into an old friends basement with booze! We found a table and promptly got cards and played drinking games. The beers weren't to over priced (Rolling Rock - 3.50). They also had ping pong which I haven't played since high school like 10+ years ago. Retro video games everywhere, comics, board/card games. Comfy chairs and couches. It's a wonderful place if you like such things. They also had a grill going outside with some bomb pork tacos! I got to dress it as I liked but it was a mountain of a taco. If i lived in the area, I'd be investing in some games to bring with me as there are some systems that appear to be pretty scant in the game department. Love Neil's. I keep the drinks simple because I'm not a pretentious ass and I just wanna enjoy the laid back atmosphere that caters to my nerd needs. Parking in the area is crap and almost never free and the video games tend to stay crowded/busy. Those are the only cons. Everything else is amazing about this lil slice of heaven.
