We got a 12" pie and calamari to start- both cooked perfectly. Then got a sandwich and a wrap which didn't stand a chance at leaving as leftovers. I just want to start off by saying we have been coming here for YEARS and it has always been consistent and great. However the last two visits ( we go on Sundays and in the summer we love to sit outside there) were just not good and it hurts me to say it. A few weeks ago we went and I didn't really see anybody that we knew there's usually the same woman at the door every time we go and we always have a brief pleasant conversation with her. We didn't see her when we went in, but no big deal we were led to our booth. We don't even need menus anymore because we always get the same thing and it's always delicious. We always start with a salad and then we get the muscles medium and a large pie with half black olives. We waited about 10 minutes. We still hadn't been given water or even acknowledged at our booth. We just kind of waited patiently because we did see that it was busy but after 15 minutes past, we were kind of like what is going on a young woman came over she looked overwhelmed. She was helping most of the tables asked us what we wanted to drink and we said to her you know what can we just do everything now because we can see that you're busy. We gave our order and then we sat another 15 minutes just waiting for our drinks to arrive. Our salad finally came out and then our mussels . The muscles must've been made and sitting in the back for a while because for the first time ever we did not like them they were rubbery and cold. We ate them anyway cause we don't like to make a big deal then we waited for our pizza. And waited and waited and waited. No one was even looking over at us. No one came over to ask if we needed more drinks. It was like we didn't exist, which was very upsetting because my boyfriend is a person that tips 30% every time anywhere we go. Finally, the person that was running the front saw that we were getting very aggravated and came over and at this point, we were just disgusted and wanted to leave as my boyfriend's mom is ill and we can't spend three hours sitting at a local bar restaurant. We told the woman that we didn't even want them at this point and if we could just get them to go. Because we had ordered a second pizza to take to my boyfriend's mom. She did do the right thing and took the pizzas off the bill and we appreciated that and we chalked it up to just being a one off day, no big deal in comparison to all the great times we've had there. So we ended up not going back for a few minutes weeks and we finally went back yesterday. It was extremely busy so we knew we would be there a little while I want to say that our waiter Tyler was great. We have no complaints about him. He was friendly and he got our order correct. But it was the same thing where we sat there for about 10 minutes before anyone even came over with a glass of water. We then instructed how we wanted the food brought out first the salad then the mussels and lastly the pizza he repeated it back to us and we knew he had gotten it and like I said we have no complaints about Tyler. But then, of course the salad and mussels came out at the same time. We kind of just said to each other no big deal. We'll eat the salad fast and eat the mussels while they're still warm as we literally took the first bite of our salad our pizza came out. He told us that the back kitchen had just put everything in at once. I'm not really sure what's going on here why they can't get it together, but we ended up eating our food so fast because we didn't want anything to get cold. That's not an enjoyable way to go out to dinner. I really hope it can go back to being the way it was because it used to be phenomenal. I think we will be taking another little break until the weather gets nice and we can sit outside and hopefully the service will go back to the way it was as I stated Tyler was great. I really believe it was not his fault that it all came out at once. This is truly a local place that has been here for so many years and it's just kind of sad to see that it's almost like they don't care that they take for granted that they will always be busy, but that's not how the way the world works. Things are so expensive in today's world and going out to dinner should be a pleasure not a stressful event. It's a great place in general and I definitely do not want to bash it. The pizza is delicious thin crust and deserves 5 stars. We get takeout from here frequently and should probably stick with that. The old dining room needs some TLC. There was a thick layer of dust on the ledge next to our booth and the woman at the hostess stand was pretty gruff or I would have asked to sit in the newer room by the bar. It wasn't that busy but I don't know if it was the kitchen pace, not enough server coverage or what--service was slooooowwww. Slow getting our food, slow getting refills, slow getting pretty much anything but the check. The food was... okay. My dinner looked nice, but the chicken was very dry and tough, and not that flavorful. Wife liked her dish, so cool. So did daughter. Son put away a ton of pizza so I guess he liked it. I've been to Nellies Place before but not in a long time. My husband and I went on Saturday night early and the place was already slammed. I've been there before earlier in the day and it is always busy. They have parking in the front and a lot of parking in the back and it all does get filled . There is normally a wait. We were lucky enough to find a seat at the bar where my husband could stand and we ordered a few drinks. The bartender was outstanding. She never stopped. She was also extremely attentive and made a very good cosmopolitan for myself and my husband enjoyed a few glasses of Guinness. We decided to order the Irish nachos because I've seen them there before and they looked good and wow, they were delicious. The serving of them was huge and enough for us to split and we were full. They have homemade potato chips on top and then topped with lots of corned beef, sauerkraut and Swiss cheese. They were so unique and really good. We were so full after we didn't even have room to get a pizza like we originally planned. We will definitely be back. This is a great place to go for a drink, to split a pizza, or out to dinner with the family. read more

Kind of disappointed. I've read a lot of reviews, and a lot of stuff on Reddit, and honestly was expecting a much better pizza. My issue was with the bar pie that I ordered. It was obviously reheated, not fresh. The cheese was gummy and it looked very dry. Unfortunately, I will not be returning to Nelly's, if this is the type of pizza that they serve. Mr. Portnoy... creator of the StoolieVerse left a bewildering and bold review of this spot, flipping Bergen County onto it's head and spinning it around in circles like a cardboard box break dancer. (But without the cardboard and without the knitted cap.) Minds boggled, brains busted, skulls bloodied and scarred with the circular scrapes one gets from spinning their noggins on concrete... more simply put the neighborhood was either cheering or jeering. A rivalry that Linguini B had to get to the bottom of. Once and for all. A Wednesday night in December. The town is bustling. Kinchley's and Nellie's are packed houses! The news brought out the supporters of each and the venturers who now wanted skin in the game. Why not then, I said, choose Nellie's as I have never frequented. With lofty expectations and a stomach ready to plow through and chow up some pizza and wings... I entered the establishment. Immediately, I am a fan of the spot. Nice vibe, huge space, large bar, booths and tables alike. Real facility they got here. The atmosphere was that of a playoff game. Either that was all in my head or the heaviness of the air that DaveyP facilitated was tangible. I lean the second. Expectations rising, the hype is bouncing off the inner walls of my egghead. We start off with the Buffalo Wingz, first little point deduction here. We definitely should've gone Elkin but that's no excuse. The wings were crispy, they were full but they were nearly sauce-less. The buff sauce had basically just not stuck to the wings and instead created an overly liquid pool of runny Buffalo sauce in the serving plate. Not what you wanna see. Wings themselves though, again, were good. And they had an absolutely lovely lovely house ranch sauce that must be factored into the overall wing appreciation. 7.2 wing, good/solid wing but could easily be better. Now the star of the show. Pizza pizza. One plain bar pie, one large pie with Fra Diavalo and meatballs. It's only right. Only way to get a clear winner in what I was expecting to be the battle of the decade. I recommend ALL PIZZA TASTERS, including the so-called Pizza King himself get both pies with the Fra Diavolo. It's the local way. It's the only way. Let's get into the pie: - Thicker crust than you'd expect. The doughiest thin crust I've ever had but that's not a bad thing for me personally. For some this will be a let-down though. - Whole lotta cheese, connects with the dough making it almost like a cheesy crust type... unique for sure. - Sweet sauce which again I personally enjoy bc I have class and I have taste buds that can handle it and appreciate it. - Fra Diavolo... hotter than Kinch's, more oily... meatballs same size and shape but less seasoning. Score on Pizza in general: 7.9. I think that's the same score actually so respect to Dave. Very Good, just not great. No shame in the game at all. BUT. Nellie's ain't no Kinch. Wouldn't even really say it's close. Kinch is crispier, tastier, and better toppings. This isn't a rivalry. This is big bro - little bro. Little bro emulates big bro, looks up to it. Yankees-Mets. Peyton-Eli. Dawg-Puppy. You catch the drift. Kinchley's is clear. But no need to fear. For if you love the thin crust. In Nellie's you can still trust. A real respectable joint. I have dined here a few times but the last time was probably my last time. Service was horrific. The young girl hostess was terrible. We had a table of six and she went to put us at a four top and then walked away. Then we sat in the room upfront in a booth and we should have noticed all of the unhappy customers sitting around us. Multiple tables walked out or complained. They kept all of those tables dirty and never bussed the tables. Even our table we had to ask them to take away our appetizer plates and garbage. Our server he was terrible. I have never been to a place before where a round of beer took over 15 minutes. The apps took forever as well we are sure he forgot to put them in. Out of the six of us only one persons order came out right. When we pointed out what was missing, it was not quickly corrected. Service was painfully slow and nothing is worse than so many errors and food coming out incorrect. Example a salad, no dressing. Soup missing, side dishes wrong. So many errors and again incredibly slow service while sitting in a dirty dinning room. Nothing like finally getting your entree after sitting there for close to two hours and looking around with the bones of buffalo wings from a table that got up an hour ago. Also they rang us up twice for the same meal and when we brought it up the waiter became confrontational. We asked to see the manager and he was so short with us. I have no idea what's going on at that place anymore. A neighbor told me she has a bad experience too but I didn't fully believe them . Well trust me I believe them now and finally to put the icing on the cake the walls had so many gnats and bugs on them. This place used to be a staple for us but never again. Since long before I became a Bergen county resident I've been eating at Kinchley's on a regular basis. We're a Kinchley's family - but my wife always told me there was this "other" place called Nellie's that was like a rival to Kinchley's and that she hadn't eaten at for like 20 years. So when we found ourselves in the neighborhood recently we figured we'd give ol' Nellie a try. The parking lot was crazy tight FYI - not counting that as part of the review but we were in a mid size SUV and had to do like 4 moves to get safely into a space. 20 minute wait when we got there -ok- fair to expect a wait around dinner time anywhere- but it was only 4:45 and this place did not have a comfortable waiting situation and call me crazy but I swear the regulars in there were staring at me like, "who's this guy? I bet he usually eats at Kinchley's". Anyway the pizza was good. We ordered French onion soup which was totally inedible but not that big a deal. The pizza is the main event and it's definitely good, solid pizza but the whole experience was just not that great. No disrespect guys I don't know the half of how hard it must be to do what you do and to stay in business as long as you have - but Kinchley's has been around like 50 years longer and gets everything right every time. I'd never discourage someone from coming here - but if you're close to Nellie's you can't be more than 15 minutes from Kinchley's and I seriously can't come up with a single reason why you'd ever be better off choosing Nellie's. read more

Nice atmosphere but can get really loud when when packed. They do seem understaffed when busy. We went in recently and the host/hostess was nowhere to be found. Food is good but sometimes inconsistent. First time I went the fried calimari was great but the next time was meh. Kinda odd to me that they served me a can of beer and no glass. for a sunday afternoon, this place was a nice choice for a late lunch. first off, the beer selection is pretty good. i was pretty impressed with what they have on tap. 2ndly, the basic bar pie grew on me. it seemed incredibly simple at first, especially since it was such a thin crust, but as i housed slice by slice, i grew to like it. its a modest price of about $12 for a large. i took half of it back with me and had for lunch. lastly, the buffalo calmari medium was a bit disappointing at first. i was expecting the calamari to be tossed in the sauce. however, the sauce was supplied on the side. weird. anyway, it was basically a fra diavlo sauce that you dip the cauliflower in. overall, i liked it. cool spot, plenty of free parking on the lot out back, out door dining, and decent prices. our bar tender was incredibly annoyed with me because i had so many questions, but fuck it i still had a good time. read more

201 magazine has Nellies listed as the runner up to the best pizza in Bergen County. So we had to make the trip. We got the 14" bar pie and then I ordered a vodka margarita pie to go for my wife so she didn't kill me after a night of pizza joint hopping. The pie came out and I was skeptical. Then I took the first bite and any doubts I had were immediately vanished. Sauce was flavorful, cheese was excellent and the crust was crispy. Personally, I would've liked it in there for another minute but that's on me not knowing. It was still nice and crispy. The smell of the vodka margarita pie was killing me the whole ride home. I had to resist. My wife would've exploded if I didn't show self restraint and walked in with a pie and a slice missing. When I finally tried it, it was excellent. Even being lukewarm from a 40 minute drive home. The girl that waited on us was being phenomenal. I've been extremely lucky lately and getting excellent service when hitting the town. Nice interior. We sat in the restaurant area but walked thru bar area. I really like both spaces. Both had a nice vibe of cosy. We ordered buffalo wings, Nellie spring mix salad ( to share) and a 14" pizza. Waitress timed the order perfectly which was nice but unexpected, hence worth noting. Thank you! Buffalo wings were crispy which is great but we did also note that the sauce either didn't stick to wings and pooled in the plate or that's how they do it here ( for dipping maybe?). Nellie spring salad was good and they were generous with craisens and cheese. Dressing they serve was good choice and went well with the salad. Pizza was ok. I knew it was "bar style" which is not my personal favorite style although I can appreciate different styles. It was nice to be able to eat with the kids outside. Even nicer that the kid's menu included chicken and broccoli! We started with the chili nachos, which were fine. Probably wouldn't order again. My main course was Nellie's Special. Our waitress asked if I wanted the anchovies on the side. Every bite without anchovies was stellar; every bite with anchovies tasted like anchovies. I should have taken my out! I tried the meat lovers too but I think the anchovy-less special is better. Speaking of the waitress, she was great. Unfortunately, she had to manage everyone outside by herself for a while, so service started off slow. Beers on tap are standard. I was happy to have my first shandy (leigenkugel) of the year but yea do not expect anything wildly different from the usual suspects. A friend of mine who had introduced me to Kinchley's, and knows that I regards Kinchley's as the best pizza in NJ, suggested Nellie's to me as a comparable but closer option for me. I carefully put aside the comparison, considering it unfair, and came to enjoy it for whatever it is. Firstly, I very much like the decor. Service is friendly and fast. And their bar pie? Absolutely delicious! Plus they have Stella on tap, which makes me happy. So why only 3 stars? Because a bar pie and a beer later - $15 plus tip - I'm still pretty hungry and thinking towards where I can go to finish off my hunger on the cheap so I can feel like I've had a full meal. Their bar pie is basically a somewhat filling/generous appetizer, but definitely not a full meal for a grown, hungry man. This place would easily be four, maybe even five stars, if their portions were better. When I spend $15+ on a meal, ANYwhere, I'd better damn well walk away feeling reasonably full. Delicious pie. Either don't show up hungry, be ready to spring for an extra $8 bar pie (plus adjustment to the tip accordingly), or go somewhere where the portions are better. A rare experience of delicious yet disappointing. Sorry Nellie's.
