I cannot recommend Nelsen Family Dentistry enough! I have had one dentist my entire life and she recently retired, so I haven't been seen since 2021. I discovered NFD on Yelp and decided to give them a try after reading the excellent reviews. I had a deep cleaning done as well as 2 old fillings replaced by Dr. Missy and some wonderful hygienists and assistants. I have always had dental anxiety especially getting anesthesia and they made it very tolerable and comfortable for me! I went to get a crown put on. Nothing special just a crown. The end result was horrible pain and a Dr. Missy who could care less. After 10 days of major pain, my jaw shut tight and I can not even eat. I went back and requested pain medication so I could open my mouth and she said she couldn't do it. When I asked why she said the most she could do was ibuprofen. Instead of pain control medication she gave me anti biotics???? WTF??? Anyway, Nelsen Family dentistry is another Chico butcher dentist. Don't go there. I'll look for a dentist who cares to make sure I'm comfortable after they mess me up and I will file a complaint with the proper authority. read more

Hands down the best dentist I have ever been to. I was just visiting Chico when I chipped my tooth. Doctor Nelsen was able to get me in the same day and was able to take care of me very quickly. I don't have dental insurance and doctor Nelsen as well as the dental assistant, Shawna, were both beyond wonderful making sure my needs were met financially. The work was wonderfully done and I actually cried happy tears when I left. Thank you so much to doctor Nelsen, Shawna, and everyone else at this practice for taking such good care of me. Friendly dentists, dental staff, and front office folks. An excellent place to hopefully continue to avoid cavities.

Although they were quite friendly with free water and drinks in the lobby it didn't make up for the $700 reline on a lower denture which sadly did absolutely nothing to improve the fit. I had successfully done an at home reline so expected a professional one to be effective. It seems the $125 initial consultation might have recognized and psyched me up for that potential. All in all I don't think they have the experience therefore expertise to deal with dentures and would seek this type of care at another office. read more

I came in as a new patient because I wanted a second opinion about a tooth that had no visible cavity but was hurting, I was told needed a root canal and a crown or just pull it from another dentist in town... a week after the visit with the other dentist the tooth cracked on my while eating.. this is when I called up NFD for my second opinion... Met up with Dr. Tommy and he is a super nice guy. He explained the tooth was likely cracked and that they are hard to see on xrays. In his opinion he could fix the tooth as it was without needing to do a root canal, score! My tooth was basically a hole where it cracked and broke so he made sure to give me a temp filling so that it wouldn't get worse in the mean time. My appointment was about a month out from the initial and I felt like it was a little far away but they are a pretty busy office. The procedure went great and he was able to repair the tooth! He even gave me a call on his cell phone the next night to ask how I was doing and if I was in pain, A+ customer service there. Thanks Dr. Tommy! read more

Skilled and caring; that was my experience at Nelsen Family Dentistry with Dr. John Nelsen. He literally and figuratively restored my smile. I had been to several dentist (out of the area, as I've just moved to Chico) and their recommendations were extreme and expensive. Dr. John provided a menu of options to choose from and I decided on some basic treatment. When your dentist is humming during his work, happy in his day, skilled in his practice, there will be nothing short of a miracle. It was the best dental experience (no pain) and resulted in a significant improvement in the appearance of my teeth and smile. I am so grateful to Dr. John and his entire staff, who are all very warm and friendly. How can one say they had a glorious day at the dentist? Having Dr. John do the work. I went to Dr. Tom Farris. He is very nice and makes you feel important, but I just felt uncomfortable with him. He has these long talks with you, and even calls you at home sometimes. The first time phone call was to see if I was doing ok after a cavity filling, which seems nice and to some people maybe they will appreciate it, but I didn't really like it. The second phone call was inquiring why my husband and I stopped going to him and switched dentists. I appreciated him caring, but it was an awkward phone conversation. Talk about confrontation! I found myself dreading to go to the dentist, and it wasn't because I was scared of pain! It was because I just didn't feel comfortable around Dr. Farris. I don't want to be mean on here, but he wasn't for me and I probably wouldn't recommend him. He is very nice though. I did however like everyone else in the office, especially the dental hygienists who do the teeth cleanings. read more

I had been putting off seeing a dentist for about five years (not really something I'm proud of) but I waited until I couldn't ignore it anymore. While searching I was overwhelmed with the amount of options out there but based off of a friend's reccommendation I ended up scheduling an appointment. Within my first visit I was able to fix one of my problems and get a complete outline of all the work that I needed to get done including what it could possibly cost me. They took the time to outline why each treatment was necessary and which ones could be put off longer than others. They allowed me to schedule appointments on my pace based of what I could afford as well as handle. Instead of lecturing me they gladly gave me advice and answered all of my questions. I have worked with Dr. John Nelsen and several of the dental assistants, hygentists and office staff in order to get back on track. Even when I called with billing questions regarding a denied insurance claim they assured me that they would resubmit it and get it corrected. I reccommend them because of their friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere and professionalism. read more

I'm sorry to say, Nelsen Family Dentistry is not the place to go. I first heard of them through the postcard coupons in the mail. Their office was hard to find, so it was not a good location. My appointment for a cavity exam was moved, to 12:30 p.m.. I came at 12:10 p.m. but I didn't see a dentist until 1:00 p.m. after I had filled out the paperwork and waited in the dentist's room. They had trouble billing my private insurance, even though it was advertised that Nelsen Family Dentistry "accepts most private insurance". It turns out they only accept, DELTA. This dentist does not do silver fillings, so it would cost more to do the white fillings. I did not like the dentist I had, I felt he didn't know what he was doing. I only chose this place because I did not like Western Dental but again, I'm sorry to say this is not the right choice for a dentist. Next time, I will go to another dentist (hopefully one that accepts Anthem/Tonic Blue Cross). read more

She was patient with my many questions, comforting, and very friendly. My husband does not have dental insurance and we called numerous dentist offices to hopefully receive a referral to go to a surgeon for an infected wisdom tooth. None of them were willing to help with our situation. However, Mel and Nelsen Family Dentistry were happy to help! Had some weirdness with the teefies. Not used to this. I have never had a cavity and have strong teeth. I am heading out of the country next week and needed to get check out. The fit me in within a day of calling and turns out I had broke a tooth. He asked if I wanted it fixed right now. I asked how long it would take (I was in the midst of a deadline that had to be completed that day). Dr. Nelsen told me 20 minutes and he would have me on my way. I said okay. He gave me 3 or 5 or 6 shots (I can't tell how many because I couldn't feel any of them) to numb me up. Drilled a bit. Filled a bit. Shaped a bit and then filed down the lower tooth that was actually the culprit for breaking the upper tooth. Several hours later my deadline is done and my teeth are acting like teeth again. Best. Staff are friendly and generally get me in right on time. The office is continually getting updated with new technology. It always surprises me that they remember details about me, which is nice, I'm not just another face in a sea of patients. My cleanings have always been pretty painless and I'm usually in and out within an hour for a standard cleaning/X-ray/exam. They have a lot of patients so it's sometimes hard to get an appointment that isn't a few months out, so that's why I only ranked 4 stars. They have always been willing to work with my family on payment plans and special deals before we had dental insurance.
