Went to Dr. Nelson recently to have some moles & skin tags removed for my face and neck. One on my neck was the size of a boba, those tapioca balls you find in Thai bubble tea. Frankly, I'd been procrastinating and trying home remedies for years to eliminate or reduce them and I just wasn't comfortable until very recently seeking professional help. I was also concerned about cost and whether insurance would cover it. Luçkily, that wasn't a problem for her so there was no out-of-pocket or other obstacle preventing me from undergoing the process. Had a conversation with Dr. Nelson two weeks ago who assured me the process would be quick and relatively painless. Her staff is professional and the whole process was efficient - and dare I say - very releaving. No sooner was I on the operating table that the first larger boba ball skin tag was snipped off after a tiny prick of anesthesia. I smelled a bit of burning because she cauterized the wound with some kind of directed flame/heat to stop the bleeding. I smelled that distinct smell of hair being perm'd or "cooked" in hair salons I've smelled from time to time over my lifetime lol... Only it was me being roasted this time. She does apply ointment immediately thereafter to the calm the stinging and dress the wound. She then moved on to smaller tag over my right eye. Same process. Very easy. I've had these tags and moles my whole life since they seem to be hereditary. Felt like old friends were missing, but like those ones that come and stay with you for a few days and you are glad when they finally leave though. Several days in and both are healing nicely. I'm so pleased with the work that I'm going back this week to get all the rest removed. Wished I'd done this years ago. read more

I was Dr. Nelson's first appointment of the day. She was late for work because she was stuck in traffic - the front office informed me she would be about 45 minutes late. I told them that I didn't think that was an appropriate way to treat new patients and I would not be able to trust a provider who behaves that way. I then left and informed them I would not be anticipating any charges for the appointment. Dr. Nelson then wrote me a 2000+ word email rant, lecturing me about all kinds of things that not relevant to my situation whatsoever. She implied that I shouldn't care if she's late, because she might be too busy delivering terminal cancer diagnoses to other patients. This place was okay at first, and Dr. Nelson found a treatment to combat my condition, but after that she could never find a better solution as the old treatment began not being very effective. On my last visit, she thought it best to instead of actually finish off the acne on my chest, to rather just cover it up with hair!!! That's not helping the problem!!! Not sure where she is now, I know she moved places a few times, but please don't bother going here!!! If you are serious about skin health and skin care, this is the place for you. Dr. Nelson is the best! She was able to quickly identify a case of sun poisoning and provided a series of treatment and options which we appreciated. The results were almost immediate as the burning and itching were subsided with her recommended treatments. It has been about 3 weeks and the skin where the sun poisoning was at its worst is almost completely back to normal. So much better! Dr. Nelson was friendly, expertised, communicative and awesome to work with! The front desk is super warm and friendly and the rest of the staff is also professional, easy to talk with and pleasant to work with. Great establishment all round. This woman shows up with preconceived notions and hardly allows you to even describe your condition and what you your are going through. She is so brash and unprofessional to the point he was even disdainful to the doctor who referred me to her outfit, I have called him never to make that mistake so that is one person saved from this doctor. I was recommended by my insurance company for my daughter .. SMH too bad we never got to see the dr from waiting over 2 months to get on the schedule then the new patient forms are only available via ADOBE smh not everyone has access to ADOBE especially if on an Apple computer . Literally 2 months then the day before the appointment you say come in to pick up the forms wow the purpose of doing a virtual visit is to limit any extra exposure . The scheduling staff is horrible I would never recommend anyone go there just because if they suck then how is the doctor because they are a reflection of her . I wish I could give Dr Nelson 0.. star I traveled 4 hours to see her for my scheduled appointment however when I arrived at her office a little earlier to let her know that I had arrived in town she was not there I asked the other employees in the next room had they seen her,, they said she has not been there in about 2 weeks and they never see her also they told me another patient had come for an appt as well,, to make a long story short I called her and text her over and over again finally she called me bk said she forgot about my appt and she was on medical leave until july I asked her why she didn't call me before I drove for 4 hours for my appt, ,I was extremely upset and I was in shock that she would not even bother to contact me before I left home this is extremely un professional and a horrible thing for a healthcare provider to do to a patient or anyone for that matter and when she said she was sorry it didnt sound like she was sorry at all very non cholent attitude I asked her if she could refer me to someone while I was in that area , she said oh you can just call around there are plenty of providers that will do it,, once again shocked and upset by the way she treated me.. thank God I was able to call around for a dermatologist that performed my procedure while I was in that are and he was a God send very professional and even asked me when did I want to come in,, if anyone is reading this review please do not go to this women unprofessional is to nice of a term to describe her as a healthcare provider,,,, read more

One of the most unprofessional places I have ever been too and definitely the worst medical experience I have ever had. I booked an appointment with the doctor because she was the only doctor in the area that could see me on short notice. I should have taken her availability as a sign. My biggest problem with her is her customer service, or rather lack thereof. Not only did she not care to listen to what I had to say, but when I was able to speak, she would interrupt me and talk over me. At one point, she told me to direct some of my questions to the nurse, instead of to her. I wasn't even able to ask the doctor all of my questions before she just walked out of the room, while I was speaking to her! I thought maybe she would return, but she did not. I was left in the exam room wondering if anyone would come back, but they did not. I wish I could leave zero stars. This was a waste of my time and money. Enjoy your one star. read more

I had to wait two hours past my confirmed appointment time. I was given no explanation or apology for the delay. During her exam I asked if the spot on my face was an actinic keratosis. I got no reply. She is not patient-oriented at all. She then quickly froze (in less than a minute) five or six spots (several were age spots...one was a rubbed area from my CPAP mask.) She gave no explanation of the treatment or instructions for wound care. I have since found another dermatologist. read more

For some weird reason my original review was posted to a business NOT the same name! So reposting for those that would ever consider patronizing this establishment especially with children. NEVER go here. I should have listened to my instinct. Was recommended to go there for my son by my pediatrician for a common skin condition - a 7 year old. She tells me that my 7 year old son was "on the whimpy side" IN FRONT OF HIM AND HIS SISTER based on the pain experienced while being treated with Beetle Juice for a skin condition. She NEVER told me what to expect and I was mortified when my son was in extreme screaming pain. I felt hopeless after I left the office. Left a message next day for a call back from doctor to ensure his experience was normal. NEVER received a call back. Tonight, I was taken aback by her comment to him being WHIMPY and just simply could not believe she would talk about a small child in this manner. I will be making sure my pediatrician knows of my experience and will never go here again. Stay away and I wish I'd reviewed YELP before taking my child to this place. read more

My visit with Dr. Nelson was very disappointing. Many of reviews that are written are so true. I waited for about 35 minutes and I had one of the first appointments before I was able to see her. She rushed me, didn't really listen and didn't even check my area of concern. She was just like yeah, yeah and that was it. She's terrible! Waited over 45 minutes in an almost empty waiting room. Horrible bedside manner, very condescending, made snide remarks in reference to my disability. A month later used patient portal to get a refill & the next day Dr. Nelson called & chewed me out, said I wasn't on that medication anymore? Would have been nice if she had told me before hand! Then 3 months later requested a refill on another medication, via patient portal, & voicemail with nurse Carla. Never received a response! Unacceptable. I will NOT be back. Had a problem with severe eye swelling and after waiting over an hour, finally saw the Dr. - or so I thought. The person I saw ended up to be some rotating Dr. and had no interest in listening to me explain the background on what was happening, but rather jumped into asking me several qualifying questions, after which she quickly arrived at the conclusion that it was all related to the fact that I had gel nails. The 'diagnosis' was to get the gel removed and all would be good. Long story short, after telling her I've had gel nails for 10 years and that once they are hard, they do not react with the environment or my eyes, she dismissed me and told me to come back in 2 weeks once the gel was removed to see the results. Suffice it to say that I did not do that, went to a different dermatologist who gave me some meds and that took care of it. Based solely on my personal experience, I would steer clear and find someone else. read more

She was a great active listener and gave me her professional input on certain soaps and habits I needed to change. I was impressed on how kind and professional she was during my exam. PLEASE BELIEVE ME WHEN I SAY....WORST DOCTORS OFFICE EVER!! I work in healthcare myself and the care provided by this office is not how a patient should be treated. This office has 1 doctor, 1 nurse, and 1 front office receptionist (who never answers the phone). After waiting 2 months to get my newborn a visual appointment because they wouldn't see her in office, I was extremely disappointed. She had no sound or visual on her end but I could see and hear her, she had no idea that I was watching and listening to her as she quickly grew impatient all the while she started smacking her lips in disgust and making unprofessional comments while waiting a short minute before ending my infant's visual session. My oldest has been a patient with Dr. Nelson since 2011 but her office was fully staffed then. I have recently found a new dermatologist for both of my children. My advice to anyone to to stay clear of this practice until some serious changes are made. read more

DO NOT GO TO THIS DOCTOR!!!! WARNING!!!! She is one of the most unprofessional and condescending doctors I have ever encountered. Her staff are MAJOR liars and she doesn't care. She needs to work on her bedside manners. If I could give her no stars I would do that. This morning I came for a cyst removal from my sister's face (mind you our first encounter was equally as horrible) she was 20 mins late but that wasn't the issue. A lady who might have been the nurse or the PA came in to ask us some questions. She asked if we had come in for a follow-up appointment and I said no we had come in for a procedure, not a follow-up. The lady then said she doesn't have us down for any procedure today but she will go ahead and check. When she came back she said the same thing that we weren't scheduled for a procedure but just a follow-up and that even though we wanted a procedure done, there was another patient ahead of us who the doctor would have to see first when she came. I was flabbergasted at this point because we had already been waiting for a while. She then said that if we had any scheduling issues we should talk to the manager about it. I said "okay that's fine" and went to speak to the manager, and the manager indeed confirmed that I had been scheduled for a procedure to be done. We went back to this nurse, and she tried to gaslight me by saying that the doctor was there already and she was going to perform the procedure after all. She also tried to make it seem like I was getting upset for no reason and that I should calm down. I couldn't believe this lady, but at this point, I was over it and was ready to speak to the doctor about her. To my greatest surprise when the doctor came in she said to me and I quote "this procedure is not a rushed procedure it is going to take about 1-2hrs". What! I had not discussed time with the nurse, therefore why is the doctor talking about time when that wasn't the problem. I was like that isn't a problem why would she say that. This doctor said, "well you refused to sign the informed consent so I am just trying to tell you what will happen". She didn't even try to find out what happened, she had already made up her mind about it and proceeded to treat me like an "angry black woman". She then said "I can't do the procedure if you are angry, I will have to refer you to another pediatric dermatologist", she never even apologized. What kind of person does this to their patients? Do not disregard the other reviews. I did and I should have listened. Monday March 21 I had an appointment at 3pm. I received several text messages to confirm my appointment to which I did. I live about 40 minutes away. I arrived at the location which is listed on ALL dermatology sites (I.e their website, Google, and Yelp) and per their directions I sent a text message to the number on their answering service to let them know I had arrived. I heard nothing back. My wife also sent a text message and nothing. My wife and I both tried calling the office to get ahold of someone and no one answered the phone. I knocked on the door and no one ever came to the door. Someone from an adjacent office on their way out said the dermatologist office appeared to have spent the day moving. There was no sign on the door, no message to me to tell me this, nothing! Guess what address was still listed on their website. 7960 Donegan Dr #217, Manassas, VA 20109 . This apparently isn't where this office is located. After waiting an hour I left. It's frustrating to know I waited about a month for this appointment. It's ridiculous. Don't waste your time. I lost three hours of my time for nothing. I called another dermatologist and someone answered the phone immediately and I was able to speak to someone right away to schedule an appointment. read more

Positives: Dr. Nelson was extremely personable, easy to talk to, and funny. I haven't met many doctors who have actually made me laugh. She is a good listener as well and took the time to ask me about my hobbies and job to see if that would explain my eczema break-out. I think she diagnosed me well and told me what medicines she would be giving me and for what purpose. Negatives: She was an hour behind schedule so I waited quite a long time. The appointment, though informative, also felt rushed. It bothers me when you are still asking questions and the doctor already has her hand on the doorknob or has already opened the door. She talked fast as well. Also, the pharmacy later called me to say 2 of the medications were very expensive and not covered by my insurance. I called the office the next day and had to leave a message. It has been a day now and no one has returned my call and they are closed today. Hoping I get a call back next week. I would say the experience was overall positive, but I did not like feeling so rushed. She does seem to be a people-person though, so to me that is a major plus. read more

(UPDATE: NOT TAKING DOWN THIS REVIEW) HORRIBLE DOCTOR! HORRIBLE SERVICE! VERY RUDE! SCAM ARTIST. I WONDER IF SHE REALLY HAS A DEGREE . The worst Dermatology Practice ever. I showed up to my appointment 15 minutes early. I was told the doctor was on time, but I sat and waited for and hour and half. When I was finally seen, I could not get a word in because the doctor was constantly over talking me. I tried to ask about specific things and i was brushed off with answers like "you are old", " that's life", "yeah, it's whatever" and "it happens". I was prescribed multiple meds which never made it to the pharmacy until 4 days later..... shouldn't the meds have been put in right away? Especially if "according" to her, I had an infection. On top of all of that, I was charged for a service that never happened. She claimed to have froze a legion on leg, which never happened. I was told it was a bug bite and the skin turned black because I am old. She offered two services to "fix" the legion and did none of them. I called the office to dispute the charge and the doctor claimed she preformed the service. SCAM ARTIST. I have called my insurance and I submitted an appeal. This doctor is not interested in helping people she is interested in what she can get paid. She crams in as many patients as she can in a day and hands out as many prescription as she can without really assessing or knowing the problem. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PRACTICE. Anyone who writes a positive review on the place is clearly friend of this doc and not an actual patient . Update (12/4/2018) - I was called by Dr. Nelson today. She was rude, tried avoid the issue of her charging me for a service that she did not preform. She claims she will fix the problem. We shall see, as she stated it will take 90 days even though her nurses said it would 30 days. Against the advice of a family member who has had more than one unpleasant experience with Dr. Nelson and/or her office staff, I booked an appointment for a long-term, itchy, rough, spot on my nose. I only made the appointment because the far more reputable and reliable local dermatologist on my insurance plan was booking 6-8 weeks out and I was getting worried. Big mistake. Long wait in the exam room for a mid-morning appointment. Dr. Nelson breezes in, gives an apology for the wait and asks a few questions. Then she looked at the spot I was worried about and gave my face and ears a once-over. She says the nose spot is most likely nothing but there is a spot on your cheek that gives me concern. Biopsy mentioned? No. Biopsy even suggested? No. She whips out her freeze spray and shoots both places. Come back in six weeks, sooner if the spots don't heal. Were the spots cancerous or precancerous? We'll never know. Follow-up appointment had even longer wait in the exam room for an even earlier morning appointment. Dr. Nelson gave a quick apology but good grief, this is dermatology - not a GP's office. She then proceeded to examine my right ear and my right cheek with her magnifying glass. When I said the spots in question were on my nose and left cheek, she moved her head to look at my nose and left cheek but SHE DID NOT USE THE MAGNIFYING GLASS ON EITHER PLACE. Really? Come on. She said they looked fine but ... My comment on where to look pretty much ended her exam. No using the magnifying glass on the rest of my face. Just. Great. I will never go back there. I am sorry I did in the first place. I recommend no one else does so either. read more

Review based off scheduling staff only, as I did not see the doctor. I scheduled my new patient appointment online and was quickly confirmed by email AND text. Appointment set for 2pm, Friday. After driving 25 mins, in the rain/wind storm, with a headache, I get to the office and IT WAS CLOSED. I called, straight to voicemail. I did leave a message and even gave them two business days to respond before posting this review. No one has called to explain/apologize. My first appointment was almost a two hour wait. Then I was rushed through appointment and freezer gun was used on suspicious area. Dr. was late for the follow up appointment and took less than one minute to do a body scan. Went to a new doctor - two areas the new Doctor did biopsies - both came back positive for two different types of skin cancers and Dr. Nelson was clueless. Would never ever recommend this practice. They really took the time to understand my concerns and did not try to oversell.

I had a suspicious facial mole removed. Dr. Nelson told me to return in two months for a follow-up. She was out of town, but her PA saw me. I thought it healed well and the PA would send me on my way, but she said it needed another "spray." When I got home, I saw she had missed the mole (which was very hard to see now; you had to feel for it) and sprayed the healthy skin about a quarter inch to the right. I was annoyed, but not overly so - mistakes happen and the thing was very hard to see. I called the office and asked what I should do. They scheduled an appointment for today. I said I hoped I would not have to pay for another office visit as I would be coming to have done the procedure that should already have been done. I never went to Nelson Dermatology that I didn't have to wait at least half an hour, but today (my third visit) was the worst at nearly an hour. They tried to charge me when I came in, and I again had to explain that I was here to have the thing done right and shouldn't have to pay. When I finally saw Dr. Nelson, she was very short with me. She asked me what the problem was, and I told her the assistant had frozen the wrong spot. She asked me what I was talking about. I explained, and she said the mole I was pointing out looked fine and had healed nicely (giving me a mirror so I could see for myself in a very condescending manner). I said I agreed with her, but apparently the PA had not because she thought it needed to be frozen again. Dr. Nelson asked me why I even bothered coming in. I said "Because you told me to come in as a follow-up!" She then said the PA had probably seen another spot and frozen that - that it wasn't uncommon for such spots to crop up. I said I'm sure that was true, but that was not what the PA had told me - she had specifically said that THIS spot needed another treatment with the spray. Dr. Nelson, who clearly did not believe me, asked me to wait while she looked at my file (wonder why she didn't do that before my appointment; she took long enough to see me). After ANOTHER ten minutes (during which time I was becoming increasingly anxious because I really needed to return to work), she came back and announced that she "didn't understand" what the PA had written, but the spot looked fine and I was good to go, and see you in six months for a checkup. Like I'll ever go back there again. She obviously did not want to admit that her PA made a mistake. The ironic thing is that if she had given the healed mole another spray I would have just chalked it up to a simple mistake and never left this review, or do what I plan to do which is call my insurance company and tell them I was subjected to a follow-up procedure I apparently did not need and they should not pay for it. I doubt that will go anywhere, as I'm sure Dr. Nelson will stand by her assertion that the PA sprayed a "different spot," and will probably "doctor" the file to reflect that (doing a better doctoring job than she did on my face, no doubt). Oh, well. The best I can do is warn others - stay WELL away from this one. read more

If I could give negative stars, I would. I had a lesion removed and it was sent out for a biopsy. They asked me to come back for my biopsy results. I called....and called....and called. They DO NOT answer their phones. You can't even leave a message because the mailbox is always full. So, I found their e-mail and let them know that I was upset, and I was thinking about going to another dermatologist. They called me back that day to set up an appointment for the next day. When I came in, they acted confused as to why I was there. So, I explained everything and told them that I was not very happy about the office not returning my phone calls. They took my $35 copay and brought me back to an examination room. I waited 30 minutes for Dr. Nelson to come in. She handed me my medical file and told me I can go to someone else. I said that I was there for my biopsy results. She told me I could read my file myself. Seriously! She and her staff are incredibly rude. I contacted my insurance company to let them know that I was charged for a service that I did not receive. * * * read more

I have been coming to Dr. Nelson for two years now. The office is very nice and the staff is extremely personable. I go every few months for cosmetic treatments, and Dr. Nelson is very good at customizing a plan that works for me. They have nice spa events and open houses too. I used to go somewhere else, but once I found Dr. Nelson, I have followed her to three different offices. :) read more

Love Dr. Jannell, but clients are accepted late, which shifts everyone around. Technically, that person should go to be back of the line, so that it is business as usual, instead, you are made to wait until everyone is seen in the order of their appointment time. Not good for me, as I always arrive 10-15 minutes early, which means I get seen somewhere around 45 minutes to an hour after my appointment time, and I HATE waiting. Other than that, the staff is friendly and the office is immaculate not to mention Dr. Jannell is the bomb.com. Her treatment is tailored to your specific needs which makes it worth going back. She has done wonders for my condition which is not all that serious I'm sure compared to others. I HIGHLY recommend her services if your current Dermatologist is not doing you justice. read more

I wish we had seen the other review before we went to this clinic. My wife had a rash on her leg that she wanted to have checked. While there she also asked Dr. Nelson to look at a dark spot that has been growing on her face. She rather dismissively said,"It's a sunspot." My wife asked what that means and Dr. Nelson said,"It's part of getting old." Her tone was really like, "Deal with it." She said she was going to get medicine for the rash, but sent a nurse back with the medicine. When my wife asked about having the spot removed the nurse left to ask Dr. Nelson. The walls are thin and we could hear Dr. Nelson in the hallway say,"What, she can't handle getting old?" Did the doctor come back? No, she sent the nurse with a can of liquid nitrogen. I watched her spray it on the spot, and she said it would start to peel in about 48 hours and might take up to a month to completely heal. It did absolutely nothing. She might as well have held an ice cube to it for 10 seconds. But we got a bill that included $178 for laser removal. She called the office and they said it might take two more treatments and she would have to pay for those as well. Condescending, unprofessional....no, thank you. read more

I was placed on hold on Monday evening at 4:50pm and stayed on hold until after closing hours to which no one answered my call. Not only that, I was cut off short before placed on hold. I've been going to Nelson Dermatology this past year and their service has been excellent. They've helped me with a number of skincare issues starting with a staph infection on my legs that I completely freaked out about, to helping me control my adult acne, and even most recently with removal of two cysts on my back. Dr. Nelson is direct and straight forward yet, offers compassion if you're not quite sure about a service. During the removal of my cyst she was very patient and helped me to not stress out about what was going on. They also offer other services like fillers and Botox. I went for an annual 'all over' body skin exam. This exam is quick, takes maybe 45 seconds to look. Dr Nelson was running late & I waited 1 hr & 15 min to be seen. She comes rushing in the room in a hurry & angry. I was trying to talk to her to tell her why I was there. She kept cutting me off & would not even let me speak. So RUDE. She then told me I did not have my gown on for my all-over look. I told her the nurse did not tell me to put the gown on. She then was very curt & short & she just left the room. The nurse came in immediately to tell me "to have a nice day". - What? I told her the Dr did not even look at me yet. She told me to put on my gown & she went to get the Dr to tell her to come back to examine me. The Dr then came back, poked her head in the door, & told me to reschedule an appt in 2 months. She was not seeing me. WHAT?? Why did I just wait 1 hr & 15 min only to have the Dr refuse to examine me? I literally thot I was on candid camera. Rudest Dr experience of my life. read more

It was a pretty nice experience. The doctor was on point and knew exactly what my skin problem was. She was pretty busy but I guess that's expected of a specialist. I was grateful she got me in fairly quick. She was pretty patient with me because I must have asked the same question like 3 times haha. The front desk staff was very friendly as well.
