Went here for Mother's Day so of course it was busy I was a little bummed I made reservations for 5 people and they put us at a little table when asked if could put us at a bigger table unfortunately they couldn't they apologize but as we were sitting they sat three people at a outside big table.The decor was fun and waitress was really nice . Came on a weekday night. They don't have a parking lot, only street parking, which was hard to come by. The restaurant was packed. Our waitress was wonderful and kept checking in on us. She gave us chips and salsa as well as our water the moment we sat down. We ordered from their Happy Hour menu. We got the Best of Nelson's Sampler for $15.99, Nelson Burrito for $9.99, and Carne Asada Fries for $10.99. Food came all at once. Felt the Best of Nelson's Sampler was not worth the $15.99. The sampler came with one soft taco, one hard taco, two taquitos, and one enchilada. The beef was dry and hard. The burrito was really dry and we had to ask for sauces. Our waitress gave us a red and green sauce. The red sauce was really spicy. The green sauce was mildly spicy and went well with the burrito. The Carne Asada Fries was good, but the ink from the liner transferred to the cheese. Overall, it's a good place to hang out. Food wasn't great, but service was fantastic. If we had to come back, we would probably get a wet burrito to try. read more

I've been going to Nelson's in The Whit for a while now and have been meaning to write a review for them for some time. These guys are great. First of all, you will not leave hungry. Their portions are gigantic! They are affordably priced, and their food is always tasty. I've never been and have had poor service; everyone who works there - whether I sit at the bar or in the restaurant - is always so friendly and attentive. I think this is a great place to go especially with groups because you're able to split a lot of different things on their menu. Lastly, their drinks are fantastic! I love their house margarita as it never disappoints. If you haven't given this place a try yet I definitely recommend it! read more

We're originally from SoCal and stopped in Eugene after a long drive. Only a few places were open past 9pm, so we tried this out since it was a 2 min drive from the Airbnb. Last night, we ordered Carne Asada fries and a Super Burrito with asada, but unfortunately when we got to our place, we did not get the correct order. The food was also cold and soggy, as if it had been sitting for awhile. This morning I called trying to explain the situation, and was told they could not do anything about it and why I didn't call last night. However, when we got to our place, it was already past 10pm and nobody answered when I called. We went about our day and came back later in the evening today to explain again. I was told the same thing, they could not do anything about the situation. They also tried to say that they were not a corporation, and a local business, but didn't take any accountability for the mistake. I was also told that i should be more grateful and not want to waste food. I understand this perspective, but from a service standpoint, I paid for a meal that I did not receive and was dissatisfied with the service and quality. I then explained that I was not from the area, and the person I talked to said they don't care and that they hope they never see me again. I received a refund in cash after this exchange, which is why I left 2 stars rather than 1. However the conversation I had today was alarming, rather than take accountability and mediate the situation, the person chose to attack the customer and even express distaste. Unacceptable. I would still love to give this place another chance as the food looked good and the interior was very cosy. read more

Trivia: What is the different between a taquitos and a flauta? What I don't recommend is eating the habanero slice in their delicious special drink, the Mango Margarita. Whewwwww! I like things spicy, but that beverage was Hottt! Everything else, highly recommend. The chips and salsa were on the milder side, but you could ask for their hot salsa (picture included), which was chunkier and SPICY. Still tasty even as the heat increased. The type of salsa you tell yourself to stop eating cause your mouth is on fire but you can't. It's just too good. As for food, we went for the sampler platter and it had something for everyone including sour cream for the inferno boil of my mouth and for dipping taquitos. Indoor and outdoor seating. i was in town and staying in the neighborhood so figured i'd give their take out a whirl. i ordered through the yelp app, added a tip, paid through apple pay and got an email saying when my food would be ready. when i walked in to pick up my order, the person working in the bar area asked to see the order because it apparently hadn't been relayed to the kitchen. she copied down the order i'd paid for and said it would be 10min. when i returned it was bagged up and ready. despite the ordering kerfuffle, i asked for future reference what the best way to order take out is. note to self: call in orders! (gotcha!) my maiden voyage choice was the chile relleno burrito. i'm a vegetarian so u didn't add any protein or additional ingredients and it was tasty as is! i'll acknowledge i was hungry but it was plenty filling as well. i'd definitely come back or order take out again, especially either way the intent to explore other menu items. read more

I thought Nelson's was just OK. Here's the breakdown. The drinks were great and truly saved the experience! Moscow mule and mojito were perfectly mixed! We also loved the chips and salsa - GREAT restaurant chips. What really feel flat was the actual entree: a wet burrito. The inside had barely any meat and frequently I had bites with hard rice! I couldn't identify any driving flavor, even with the enchilada sauce on top. The prices aren't outlandish (although the wet component of the burrito added an additional $4!) but I still expected more than a flavorless burrito with hard rice as the major filling. Stumbled upon this cute little gem in Eugene. I can honestly say, these are probably some of the best enchiladas I've had in Oregon. The sauce tastes homemade and there's the right amount of it on the enchiladas. Chips were fresh and their salsa was good. I love a good margarita and mine was a little too bitter, but after adding more simple syrup is was perfect (for me tastes buds--I'm sure folks enjoy theirs that way, but I like a sweeter margarita). We came to Nelson's for the first time last night to celebrate a birthday. We were a huge party of over 20 and our server, Jordan, was just amazing. He handled all of the stress of food and drinks with aplomb and made our night even more enjoyable. He even remembered everyone's names!! Ahhh such a fantastic meal and top notch service! Upon arrival a staff member opened the front door for us. We had the option of inside seating or outside on the large covered patio. We opted for the outdoor patio. Jordan, our server, was awesome! Super attentive, clever banter, great drink & dessert suggestions! Speaking of dessert, Traci crafted up a delicious Churro Bowl pictured below! Word on the street is that her flan might be even tastier! I'm fairly certain Jordan said that she guest bakes on Friday and Saturday nights! We went to dinner; my pregnant wife and I. I can't even explain the amazing experience and customer service that my wife and I were given by the waiter. He was very respectful, attentive and did not rush us one bit. We ended up having shrimp tacos and the chicken street tacos. And we both absolutely loved them! And I never get street tacos from anywhere because I didn't think I could find a place that had good ones. My wife has been talking of their deep fried ice cream, but they were out. he did offer to go make one for her but couldn't as they were out of the coating they used. But we told him we'd be back in 2 days for the ice cream. And he said he'd have some pre made for that day. I'm just blown away with the experience we had tonight. Total 5.0 star from us! I've heard and read great reviews about Nelson's, but sadly mine will be average. I will say the staff was friendly and attentive even though it was very busy. Chips and salsa, not my favorite. Salsa was very under seasoned, it did have onions and cilantro but just no flavor. The chips were good but every once in awhile I thought I tasted something sweet. Margaritas, a great selection of flavors and my heart skipped a beat when I saw habanero. I asked if I could up the heat level on their pineapple jalapeño to a pineapple habanero. Staff said yes, but they asked if I was sure I could handle the spice...again I was getting excited. Sadly and soooo disappointing was I, my margarita came and floating on top was a dried and visually unappealing habanero. There was very little heat, I tried dunking, tearing and chopping up the habanero but sadly it had been exhausted of any of its flavors and heat. Then my Whitaker burrito came, it was just on a plate, not a chip or garnish to make it pop but that's just me. I went to pick up my burrito and I noticed there were some very cold spots, I thought no big deal as its probably the guacamole. Took my first bite and bit into a very frozen fry..:staff was very nice and remade my burrito but the next time there was were only 2 fries in the burrito but at least they were cooked. I am not anti Nelson's and will try them again just disappointed that my experience did not match what others had shared. Even one of my dinner mates who encouraged us to meet there said things were not the same. Maybe it was post OCF or an off night, who knows. read more

I called 10 min after I submitted my order and the guy on the phone said my order would be ready soon, so I drove down to pick up. I waited over 25 min and then asked about order status...they never got my order! Wow! That's so annoying. The place was 1/2 way packed and lots of staff but only one bartender. Meanwhile, at the bar- I over heard a gentleman saying he was waiting over 45 min for his togo order....So I order a drink at the bar while I waited...the bartender takes my order, then told me there are about 10 drinks ahead of me...so I may not get my drink if my order comes up. Like, WTH I'd like my drink too please. Especially if I have to wait 45+ min for food anyhow. As I sat at the bar, I saw the hostess get my order off a tablet for grub hub, she wrote it all down on an order form and then put my order in the que. no one updated me on the status after asking 2 more times about my order... Still at the bar, a waitress came to pick up drinks for her table and she was trying to hurry up the bartender, he basically said no, kind of rude- she mentioned they were done with their food and she needed to bring the drink to them because she didn't want to them to cancel it because it's a $20 margarita....aka a bigger tip for her, understandably... The bartender was rushing through this list of drinks, they all looked great and he hustled but he wasn't kind or nice to his patrons. After 50 min I got my order. Finally. Mexican food in Eugene is problematic, at least if that you're used to is Mexican food in southern and central California. But Nelson's has a few things going for it. The staff is unbelievably kind! My husband and I arrived chilled to the bone. Jordan showed us to the warmest table. Turned up the heat, AND brought us mugs of hot water to wrap our hands arounf and to sip. He was solicitous when we ordered, clarifying menu options so we could get exactly what we wanted. Our food came promptly. I'll be honest; I've yet to find a Mexican restaurant in Eugene that's top notch. That said, the carnitas was very good, which makes me think their other meat offerings probably are too. Combining that with the great staff and pleasant atmosphere, I'd say give them a try. I certainly plan to go back! read more
