Gave Neon Armadillo another try, this time with my family and was still disappointed unfortunately. Servers are great and friendly. This time, they had someone check on our table after ordering (maybe since it was a larger group?) to make sure our orders went through correctly. Despite this, 3 of the items that were ordered failed to make it to our table, and we had to ask the servers to correct the issue. VERY FRUSTRATING since I thought after a month in operation, they would have worked out these kinks. Food again is not as good as it can be, which is really frustrating because Neon Armadillo literally checks every other box. It's an AWESOME hang out spot for the community, open seating and relaxed place to let your kids run around and the adults can watch games and socialize all in one place. Everything we got was a super small portion size for what you're paying, and the flavors for most items are still off (mushrooms, guacamole, and don't get me started on the chips and salsa!). And just like my first time, the brisket was completely sold out again, so I have yet to try it. We did get to try the 1/2 chicken which was tasty but not much better than other restaurants for the price. The Farmacy Burger was also super overpriced for the size and there is no option to have a side of fries. Another consideration, if you have any vegetarian in your group as I did, there is a severe lack of options some they use beef tallow instead of seed oils in nearly everything! At my first visit, we were disappointed that the burgers didn't have an option to swap out for a gluten free bun if you have a gluten allergy. Overall, I'd say Neon Armadillo is a fun place to visit to catch and game and maybe a small bite to eat, but the food isn't their strong point sadly.

Margarita & Sangria

I really enjoyed this spot and will be coming back as soon as I can. In fact, as soon as I can in the winter months before it gets crazy popular in the summer. It's that kind of place - it is going to draw a lot of folks because it is a cool place, well designed with awesome food and drinks. As I run this review, remember - I loved it! These are just some pointers that I wish I knew. Being 1/2 way between Wimberley & San Marcos will allow it to advertise as being in the Wimberley Valley (tourists' target) but also draw from San Marcos (larger population). This place made me think that Austin had finally spread to Wimberley. It just has the Austin vibe displanted to Wimberley. I think the main thing that peeps will have a hard time with is that it has nothing to do with what you think of as the process of a "normal" restaurant. Think of it as a high class Chipotle's. You go to a counter to order, you get a buzzer, you get your food later. The only thing that you don't have to do is buss your table. This will turn off a lot of folks and is jamming up their flow (there are employees purely there to educate folks re: how it works), but eventually enough people will understand it that it will start to flow. But this place is here to stay. They've already started innovating (the food ready buzzers) so I have great optimism that this place will knock it out of the park. To help you with the flow: look for the bar. As soon as you go inside look for a menu holder on the wall and grab one. As soon as you know what you want, walk up to one of the cash registers at the bar and make an order and they will give you a buzzer. If you have cocktails/alcohol, wait for your drinks. Once that's clear, go to the right and get your non-alcoholic beverages, utensils, water, napkins etc. Then go find a seat. When it buzzes, someone will bring you your food. EXACTLY like Chipotles! But it has a more upscale vibe. So the place is just fantastically styled. We went inside in December because we thought it would be too cool outside. Most of the smart people were outside because the heaters made it just fantastic. We had lovely seats inside and really, really enjoyed the styling. The drinks were fantastic. I had the Neon Armadillo Margarita and they know their Margarita's. My date had the Sangria and thought the same. We also got the guacamole and chips. Just like Chipotle the chips came in a lunch bag. After futzing with that a while, we just went to the "utensil/drink bar" and got a take out container. It worked MUCH better for retrieving chips from a paper bag for the stellar guacamole. For the entree I had the Neon Wedge Salad with Smoked Brisket. I enjoyed the heck out of it and it was ginormous. Wasn't craft brisket by any measure, but it was tasty just the same. The poblano ranch was a perfect accompaniment. My date went with the Farmacy Bowl with Chicken. The chicken was off the hook good. Better than my Brisket. Only down side is that she was set back by the heat of the jalapeno's. It was advertised so that's on her. She's not a chili head so it was kind of hard to eat. Pro-tip: ask if it can be done without them if you aren't a chilihead. Overall, loved the place. It is NOT your mother's restaurant. Get used to that and you will enjoy the heck out of it.

I was visiting my son in Austin and he took me here for a holiday cocktail. This place is awesome, lots of outdoor space with fun activities, as well as a nice variety of seating and fire pits. The decor of the place was over the top, wickedly eclectic. The drinks were creative and delicious. Although we didn't get any food, I did see and smell many tempting options. Can't wait to bring my honey back here with me in the Spring when we visit Austin again!

Wow! This place is so amazing. The eclectic decor, the incredible indoor AND outdoor space, the unique dishes to choose from, and delicious drinks! There's a huge area for kids to play, a great stage for live much, or a peaceful outdoor porch with an awesome view. We got the nachos, a brisket salad, and my husband got the burger and we loved it all. Delicious drinks, and our server Lawson was so kind! Can't wait to come back. This is the perfect place for this location.

Kids playing everywhere outdoors! Very family friendly!

This places is eclectic and fun...and very family friendly!! Food was ok, but the atmosphere made it worth it! We didn't think it was that pricey either.

We were so surprised by this place! We LOVED it! Fabulous food, family fun, great drinks, great live music! It was super busy but we were able to seat immediately because of their open seating! Amazing and beautiful patio but the inside is BEAUTIFUL! The entire staff was fantastic! Will be one of our favorites.

Pork, lamb, chicken, brisket with tortillas

This place is great little get away if you want to get your bbq on. It's a very scenic and great drive getting there with scenic views a hilly, windy roads. You are greeted by someone at the entrance which is all open & family oriented. I suggest ordering a little bit of everything, like lamb carnitas, brisket, pulled pork, & the chicken. You can get from a 1/3lb of each to 5lbs if you wanted. It comes w/your choice of tortillas. Get the avocado pico app for a snack and slap it on your tacos. Lots of staff so food was fast and they were very attentive. The beer selection was good with mainly Texas beers and of course local Austin and dripping springs breweries represented. A must visit!

lamb tacos, the presentation is subpar and I'll need twice the tortillas for that amount of meat. for $20, probably won't do it again.

Let's start with the good, because it'll be quick. The chips, queso, and salsa bar? Absolute stars. If the rest of the meal had matched that energy, I'd be writing this review with tears of joy instead of emotional damage. Now, the tacos. I ordered a fajita taco since they don't offer asada or anything a la Mexicana. Added cheese, avocado, and a side over‑easy egg because I'm an optimist. The first bite tasted like the meat had been personally offended by me in a past life. I genuinely almost gagged. Not "oh this isn't great" -- I mean my body tried to exit the situation. Then came the bacon, egg, cheese, and potato taco. One bite. ONE. The smoke level was so intense I thought someone had served me a campfire wrapped in a tortilla. I love flavor, but I don't need my breakfast taco to come with a side of PTSD. My friend ordered the crispy taco plate and two carne guisada with cheese. He asked for fresh jalapeños -- they never arrived. The crispy shells weren't homemade, and the beans were so aggressively smoked they tasted like they'd been punished. The carne guisada, though? Fantastic. Truly delicious. The one bright, shining, competent dish in the whole experience. Overall, this meal was a plot twist I did not see coming. I wanted tacos. I got a survival challenge. If you go, stick to the queso and the carne guisada and you might make it out okay....as I was walking out I overheard a customer showing the waitress a rotten and expired orange juice that he was served .....

Texas + Mexican food = TexMex. It's just not my thing. I'm a California girl and grew up with real Mexican food. Plus numerous trips to Mexico (from border towns to Mexico City to Cancun). Nowhere in Mexico (or California) have I had chili poured over everything in place of enchilada sauce or mole. And Durango's is the only place I've had an enchilada (meat, cheese or otherwise) that is NOT covered in chili. Service has always been good, even when I've been a bit choosy. Which I know I can be. Chips are the best in town, hands down. Prices are very reasonable. AND, they have a drive thru window that is very convenient. But, call your order in first. It's always been ready when I get there to pick up. There is also a discount for cash. If I have one negative, it's for the temperatures on the beans and rice. Definitely need to be warmer. I prefer mine very hot, so this is the only place they loose a star.

I was doing research on somewhere to go for a post Valentines Day date. Going out specifically on…read morethat day is a ridiculous waste of time and extra money to "manufacture romance". Silly. Anyway, I came across this place and the pictures of the food looked amazing. Oh I should probably warn you right now.... If you were raised on "Tex-Mex" or you're a Texas snowflake with thin skin, please skip this part of the review until the end of my rant. With that out of the way. * Incoming Rant * Why is it that 90%+ of Mexican food in Texas is utter garbage? If you do a search on Yelp and look at the pictures of what barely passes for "Mexican Food" it looks like dog food. Compare Garcia's food and presentation to Balcón and let me know which you prefer. I mean seriously, most of the restaurants serve food that looks like it came from a 1980's microwave TV dinner! So many places use that weird yellow generic government cheese, the refried beans look like they came from a WWII can and almost everything is unseasoned ground beef! The closest I can usually find is cubed beef. Have you guys never heard of shredded beef? Depending on where you go they MIGHT shred the beef and use it in birria tacos. Here's a thought. Use it in OTHER things! Shredded beef enchiladas, tortas, chimichangas, burritos and for goodness sakes, USE SEASONING! In the past people traveled around the world solely for herbs and spices but for some reason restaurants in Texas hate using them. One more thing and I'm done. Look at the presentation of the dishes here. The food LOOKS GOOD! The food looks colorful, vibrant and tasty. Not like it was cobbled together by a cowboy on a ranch in the 1800s. See how they make use of Queso Fresco, radishes, guacamole, cabbage and other things to bring life to the dishes. I've been to places in Arizona, New Mexico and Southern California and they GET IT. Make food delicious and good looking and the people will come and come back. *sigh* ok, I'm done... * End of Rant * Now back to our regularly scheduled review... We ordered the Ensenada Fish Tacos, Carne Asada Fries, and the Surf & Turf Quesadilla. All 3 dishes were excellent! The fish was beer battered and not the Gorton's frozen fish sticks that I've found in many restaurants in the Mid-West. Disgusting. Also, it was a massive portion of fish which was probably the largest I've seen in a fish taco in a long time. The asada fries were amazing. Not only is that a hard to find dish in Texas they also used the really good crispy fries that are actually edible the next day. Most places use the cheap generic square fries (think fries that are usually sold with hot dogs or hamburgers at a carnival) that taste terrible the next day. Usually you'll eat everything but the fries if you have leftovers, but not here. Balcón went for the good seasoned fries. The quesadilla was really good too. Perfectly cooked shrimp and juicy carne asada. The one gripe I did have was the white and black checkerboard paper that was used under the food. That started to disintegrate very quickly and as I was cutting into my food I kept having to pull it out of the food. Small complaint and easily forgivable. I'm not a person who's worried much about ambiance. As long as someone isn't trying to stab me while I eat or the restaurant is located next to an outhouse I'm good. But seriously it's a cool place. I like the indoor/outdoor vibe with the two open garage doors. We ate on the inside next to the door which was really nice. Overall, it was a great experience. I pray that more restaurants follow Balcón and put emphasis on presentation, not using microwave grade food, all while doing it at a reasonable price. We will definitely be coming back, as we need to try more of the menu. I tip my hat to you owner of Balcón. You definitely stand out in a sea of bland, generic "Tex Mex" restaurants.

My server recommended their margheritas but I didn't want to drink alone haha..I would love to try it next time though! I started with the salsa sampler which came with tortilla chips and three different house made salsas. I couldn't stop eating it! I kept seeing reviews of the fish tacos and heard another table ordering it, so I decided to get that as well. The pico de gallo, aioli, and pickled onions in the description just got me. Admittedly, it was just ok. I was not a big fan of the fish tacos but to be truthful, I can't recall when I last had an amazing fish tacos. Who tf orders 5 bacon only tacos? That's it, bacon and tortilla. Absolutely ridiculous.
