Amazing find! Cute little house, great service, fast service, and food incredible. The green sauce is addictive. Def a must go to for good texmex breakfast. Need to try their lunch next!

Old potatoes and old beans, probably from yesterday?!? I love this restaurant, but whoever decided this was acceptable. Needs to be let go.

A San Marcos staple los Vega is the embodiment of the hole in the wall, Mexican food restaurant of your dreams the food exacts a feeling you'll want to relive everytime. This restaurant used to be in Kyle, the service has improved since moving to San Marcos. Though both venues were almost to small for the popularity of this restaurant. - Drak

This place was amazing !! Cheap prices, big portions, and it was delicious ! The only downfall was that there was very limited seating , so you may end up at a table with others you don't know . But if you are feeling social, or just hungry for an amazing meal, I highly recommend this place !

migas verdes & huevos rancheros with a side of french toast

This place was extremely delicious and tasted very authentic! I got the migas verdes, my partner got the huevos rancheros and we split the French toast with some coffee and we cleaned our plates. the people are extremely welcoming and had great customer service. 20/10

Specialty Taco - Nopal & Bean (added egg)

Breakfast tacos were just okay. Got one create-your-own (that used more cheese than was necessary) plus one special. The nopal + bean special had a yummy filling, but I didn't care for the tortilla on either taco because they felt a little powdery to the touch. Cheese tasted cheap, not freshly grated. Service was terrific, though, so I'll come back eventually to try something from the lunch/dinner menu.

I tried to straighten the place out...but it still came out lopsided

Our realtor raved about this place months ago, so when my wife and I were thinking of a breakfast place after walking along the San Marcos Riverwalk trail (it was just an OK trail...short and not as scenic as we hoped or expected) early this morning, we decided to check it out. First impression wasn't too favorable. It looked like the building was about to fall apart and needed to be condemned. And the sign in front seemed to indicate you're in some crime-ridden area, for some reason. There's an unpaved parking area behind the restaurant but we decided to park along the street as there was ample parking there. We were greeted by Efren, our friendly and attentive server. After serving us coffee and water, he answered a couple of questions and we placed our order. My wife tried their Sausage ala Mexicana omelet and I tried the familiar Mexican breakfast Huevos Rancheros with over medium eggs instead of the traditional over easy eggs. Back in college in Southern California, my buddies and I would head out to the school cafeteria after military training / PT in the morning and devour their huevos rancheros. Service was quick and we were savoring our breakfast in no time. Our breakfast came with fresh tortillas of our choosing (flour or corn). We both liked our dishes and loved the bold flavors from everything we ate, even the tortillas...although my eggs were served over easy instead of over medium as I ordered. No big deal, as it tasted even better than I remember from college. Breakfast for 2 came out to just under $23 with tip. Good value and quite tasty and filling breakfast.

Located in a small house it is crowded but not too bad. The service was good not great. The food was bland. The chips were stale and tough. The hot sauce was spicy.

So the first thing I want to say is the coffee is very good. Nothing fancy, just plain, black, very good coffee. I ordered the sausage plate. 2 eggs, sausage patties, beans and potatoes with flour tortillas. Everything was pretty good. My eggs were cooked right. The tortillas were obviously homemade. The service was good. They brought my food out really quickly. The only complaint I have is everything was barely warm. I like to put butter on my tortillas and they weren't even warm enough to soften the butter. I had to smash it out on the tortilla. Then I got the check. $13.80 something, almost $14. I got a coconut bar and were up to $16.39. I don't believe in not tipping so add a $3 tip and your talking $20 for cold food is no bueno. Plus the charged me a non-cash fee. I was gonna give them another shot BEFORE I got the check but now I definitely won't be back.

Really good enchiladas and the queso with pico de gallo and guacamole and meat is delicious. The queso without meat is also delicious.

The best Mexican food in San Marcos. Especially their breakfast. When we come back from Monterrey this is as close as we can get!

My wife had visited years ago, and a close friend had recently recommended it, so it seemed like a good opportunity to give it a try. The building itself is beautiful. We parked in the rear lot and entered through the bakery, which immediately caught our attention. There was an impressive variety of pastries on display, and the kids were quickly informed they could each pick one out later if they behaved. The restaurant also has several colorful walls and decorative displays that make for fun photo opportunities and selfies. We were seated at a large table toward the back near the restrooms. Service was friendly throughout the meal and reasonably attentive despite the restaurant being busy. To drink, I ordered the jalapeño prickly pear margarita, while my wife chose a peach, coconut, and strawberry margarita. Both had excellent flavor. My wife's drink was especially memorable--it tasted like a cross between a strawberry margarita, peach bellini, and piña colada. The only thing missing was a little more tequila, as both drinks leaned more toward the sweet side than the spirited side. The chips were slightly thicker than I typically prefer but still enjoyable, and the salsa selection was excellent with a pleasant level of heat. The kids ordered bean and cheese tacos from the children's menu, and the restaurant happily substituted fruit for rice without any upcharge, which we appreciated. For our entrees, my wife ordered the vegetarian enchiladas while I chose the fajitas. The fajitas were good overall, though the meat portion felt a bit light and seemed stretched by a generous amount of green peppers. The rice, however, was excellent and one of the better components of the meal. Before leaving, we visited the bakery. The kids enjoyed their donuts and cookie, while I opted for a guava empanada that turned out to be one of the highlights of the visit. Overall, Casa Maria impressed me more with its atmosphere, bakery, and creative drinks than with the food itself. It's a beautiful restaurant with a fun family-friendly vibe, a strong bakery program, and some excellent margarita flavors. I'd gladly stop back for the pastries and drinks--and if they ever decide to be a little more generous with the tequila, even better.

We arrived on Thursday evening at 9:05pm to enjoy dinner after a long day of moving. Again we looked forward to some good food. We were told we would have to wait 5 mins for a table as they were cleaning them...ok no problem. 20 mins later still no table. Every empty table in the bar area was dirty, there were tables in the dining area available but many were still dirty. We asked what the delay was and were told again just another 5 mins as they were cleaning a table for us. It was chaos! No one was cleaning, and no communication, others that were waiting after us were leaving. A server came up to the hostess and said he was ready to leave....but guess he would go ahead and take on a group, he asked what was waiting she said I've got a 4 or a 2 top. He said I'll take the 2. The hostess took them to a booth that obviously could seat 4. After still waiting a few more minutes we asked why she sat them ahead of us. Her response was the same just another 5 mins were bussing the tables. She then went to the bar area where the bartender and a waitress were griping about the day (this conversation was audible as we stood there starring waiting for some sort of acknowledgment to which neither of them thought to stop and ask if they could help us) the hostess told them what had happened and started crying! Seriously crying the older waitress patted her on the back and she ran off to the bathroom! We asked was there a manager on duty, she told us he was a visiting manager helping in the kitchen. She then went on to say they had a rush at 9pm, ran out chips , and now the manager was not available. It would be at least another 5mins before they could sit us. We left. After 30 mins of waiting....tables still dirty and no one making an attempt, we didn't want to take a chance on our food. We did see one busser eventually cleaning the bar tables....overwhelmed, however servers just standing around not helping him, a total lack of teamwork, communication, or care. This location has issues. We heard someone else say they had come earlier in the week and it was the same problem. If I could give this location a negative 5 stars I would. I've been in the service industry....honesty, communication, and empathy would have a gone a long way. Why not just say something like, "we are understaffed, we ran out of supplies, and we're sorry but we can't seat you tonight as we won't be able to give you the dining experience we want you to have." We would have been disappointed, but understood.... but at least we wouldn't have wasted 30 mins of our time and now have to find another restaurant still serving at almost 10pm, again we arrived at 9:05, they close at 10 so it's not like we walked in at 5 mins to close. Thursday nights most restaurants close at 10, so finding another was a challenge that may not have happened had we just been informed. Chuys, you're better than this.

We decided to give it another try and the food was worse, the service was somewhat better, before we got the bill anyways. When we got the bill they overcharged us. The menu clearly shows desebrada chimichanga is $12.99 and on the bill they charged $12.99 and an extra $1.99. When I showed this to the server she tried to say that was for the guacamole, which was a total fabrication because a) the $1.99 was on the line that says desebrada and b) there was a charge of $1.25 on the line for guacamole. After not accepting this she said "I don't know" and was going to leave it at that until I asked to speak with a manager. The manager had ZERO customer service skills as she started by saying "what's your problem?" I patiently explained the overcharge again and she took out her phone and added the amounts on the bill, she didn't explain why she was doing this, but I assumed it was to check if the $1.99 was actually in the total, and it was. She then said "let me check the computer" and was gone for nearly 10 minutes. When she returned she said the computer is right the ground beef is $12.99 and the desebrada is an additional $1.99. She refused to match the price in the menu and walked away! We won't be back and suggest you don't waste your time, unless you like mediocre Mexican food, terrible service, being charged more than the menu states and having a Manager metaphorically flip you off!
