A New London staple! If you live here, you can disregard this review because you probably already know how good it is, and I would just be preaching to the choir. If you're new to the area, though, or just passing through- you need to check this place out asap. I've always loved coming here for a comfort meal, but it wasn't until a family trip to Charleston, SC until I truly appreciated how lucky I was to have Neon Chicken right in my backyard. We visited a restaurant down there that had been getting national coverage for how good their rotisserie chicken was. It had been on famous TV shows and had received plenty of accolades. To be clear, it did live up to the hype! But my family and I all agreed: It's great, but it's not as good as Neon. The service there is impeccable, always fast and friendly. The restaurant itself is very casual, with plenty of seating to enjoy your meal. My go-to order is a breast and thigh plate, mac and cheese, stuffing, and of course a piece of their corn bread. I'm typing this in my car in the parking lot because I just couldn't wait to rave about this place. These guys are amazing! I think I've found a new favorite spot! The chicken they work with, oh my god, they infuse it with some kind of magic because it's tender and flavorful like you wouldn't believe. It just comes apart, and all I needed on my chicken +LT sandwich was the salt and pepper that came on it. I had a seafood shack in my hometown with a similar thing going on, the fish they had was so fresh and well-cooked that you didn't need any sauce or spices, it spoke for itself. The soup was that absolutely delicious, home made style that warms up your insides and sends your taste buds to heaven. And substantial, too, there wasn't just a few strands of chicken in there, there was abundantly plenty. As I went to go, I asked for a takeout container for the rest of my soup and mentioned I was new In town and loved the experience so much I would be coming back. I used to go here once in a while years ago, and it was alright. Chicken was pretty good as long as you didn't get one that was cut up and sitting on the heat tray for a long time. Sides were never great, but were mostly ok. Juat went back, and it has gone so far down hill it can't make it back up without major intervention. To start, they didn't know how to make the order. We ordered directly from the menu sign, and we had to wait for multiple people to come through to put a simple salad and chicken breast together. In addition to that we ordered the half chicken plate. The chicken was the absolute driest chicken I've ever had. Not just the white meat, the dark meat too. It's a serious feat to make chicken this dry. It was also bland. The skin was flavorful, but no flavor made it through to the meat at all. I literally could not finish the relatively small half chicken because it was so dry. The mac and cheese side I got was so overcooked it was one step away from porridge. Tasted ok but again couldn't eat it, because it was mush. Got the red potatoes as well and they were fine. The salad was pretty much a bowl of lettuce with a couple tomato pieces. Grocery store rotisserie chicken is a safer bet. Very unfortunate. read more

You have to know where to look if you're looking for this place, the sign is white lettering against a white painted building. I only knew where it was because my colleague pointed it out, and man oh man is it amazing! Succulent, fall of the bone rotisserie chicken, flavorful buffalo sauce and pungent blue cheese dressing, YUM!!! OMG! I hit the jackpot! Drove out of my way just because of the Yelp description! Am I glad I did! Had to try the sweet n' sour cabbage and it was amazing! - it was almost like a desert! Everything is hand prepared! I don't know why I never heard of this place before, except I don't get to New London often. The chicken is perfect (twice marinated in healthy stuff!)! How did I not know about this place? I must have driven by here lots of times when driving to Fort Trumbull or Captain Scott's. Maybe I never noticed it because it doesn't have fancy outdoor signage like Boston Market or KFC. And that's a good thing. This place isn't a franchise. It's Just a nice casual place to get some home-styled rotisserie chicken, BBQ chicken, and southern styled side items. It's a place any Mom would approve of and it's probably better for you than those those chicken franchises. While it cost a little more than those other places, you won't find any plastic sporks here. You get real chinaware and silverware. It reminds me of something you'd find down below the Mason Dixon line. The process is simple....you order at the counter and seat yourself. No waiter service. There's plenty of tables on the inside and a couple picnic tables on the outside (see my outdoor picture). My meal costs me $13. Both the chicken and side items were great. On April 15th the agency I work for lost a resident that we loved and took care of for 35 years. We called Neon Chicken which was a favorite of his. We were looking for food for 150 people with short notice but needed to give them two weeks notice for that kind of feast. When we told the owner what had happened they not only made it happen they showed us kindness, compassion, and the New London spirit that we all know and love. We can't say enough good things about what what Trisha did for us and for our agency but there aren't a lot of people left in this world like her. She made a difference to 150 people and we made sure to share the message that kindness and compassion goes a long way. Whatever food we had left was shared with our local community and we made sure to share what she did for us and passed along the message that we should support her in whatever way that we can. Neon Chicken is a place that we will support forever and not just because there food is fantastic but because they operate like a place that is prideful and wants to make a difference. Can't believe we have never gone there before. Had 1/2 chicken and half order of ribs. Both of us had two sides. Everything was good. The staff were very nice, friendly and helpful. Great local place in New London. It's not a chain and the owners are working right along with the employees. The food is pretty good - on par with a Boston Market. However, the Whoopie Pies are divine and the Nein Chicken branded sodas are fantastic. They were pretty busy when I arrived at the end of a lunch rush. Even so, I got fast service. Once things had calmed down, one of the owners came around and asked how the food was. Since I was from out of town, she made some suggestions for things to do and thanked me for my business. Bottom line: Good food with a relaxed atmosphere. If you are on vacation, this is a place to eat with the locals. I'll definitely be back. read more

Came here after a day trip to the aquarium. We got a few of the specials (bbq pulled chicken and bbq pulled pork) both were delicious!! On the table was also chicken Cesar salad, macaroni and cheese, roasted red potatoes and baked beans. Every single thing was delicious!! Everything was home made and fresh and available.to eat right away! Restaurant wait times with a toddler are torture, but this was the perfect arrangement for us. The chicken had been probably been cooked the same morning, but was nothing special to me. The sides to choose from were rather bland and not any more special than out of a can. I would not classify this place as a BBQ place either. From the reviews on Yelp I thought it would be a better lunch place. The décor appeared to be a bit cluttered and faded. If I were rating the chicken alone, it would easily be 4-5 stars, however, the sides are lackluster, at best. I'll star with the mediocre sides & end on a good note with the chicken: 1 - the mashed potatoes tasted like those "made from powder" mashed potatoes you got in middle school lunches 2 - the gravy was thin & flavorless 3 - the butternut squash smelled promising (it smelled almost like pumpkin pie spice), but it tasted like baby food until I added a heap ton of salt & butter 4 - the mac & cheese seemed like it was made with velveeta cheese - which is fine if you like velveeta cheese Now to the chicken: The chicken was delicious. Family-style meal (think mom and pop scale version of Boston Market) The chicken preparation at Neon Chicken is a fair BBQ-seasoned, rotisserie-style roasted chicken. It's not the slow-roasted chicken you may be used to if you have had Southern BBQ. The meat separated from the bone easily, but held together more than real deal slow-roasted BBQ foul which I prefer. While I liked Neon Chicken and would go back, the portions were skimpy for the price you pay. I would expect to have two legs/thighs when ordering a $10 chicken leg & thigh plate. Or maybe throw in a few wings for goodwill. As for the veggies, each plate order comes with two side veggies and all were average home-style preparation. Not over or undercooked or over or under seasoned. Neon chicken is a solid average dining/take-out experience especially for those who may be in port or staying overnight at the marina next door. I am not by any means a seasoned chef or culinary pro so take this review for what it is an amateur review. Though in my opinion this is the same quality of food that you could easily do yourself for a fraction of the price. The service was very fast and everyone behind the counter were friendly and eager to guide us through the options. We were in town for Sailfest so we were happy to have anything better than packaged, preserved convenience store filth. Neon Chicken certainly was in line with what we were looking for - home-cooked food that costs a little more than you probably want to pay. The other reviews giving 2 or fewer stars are exaggerated. I ordered a double order of thigh and leg with rice and cucumber salad. I picked it up felt kinda light. I got home opened it up and was surprised to find two tiny chicken legs and thigh . Like what you get at Chinese restaurant. I called thinking they made a mistake but the lady said she packaged it herself and it was correct. Ok so I got to love with that. Was hoping the taste made up for it. It didn't meat was dry and flavorless. Very disappointed. Only saving Grace was the rice and salad were good. Wouldn't order here again. Maybe it was an off day. Not sure what the other reviewer was talking about. I wasn't disappointed at all. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised. It may not be a swank sitting area for dine-in eating but it was clean, the food was delicious, and the staff was super friendly. Way better than Boston Market... this food is really homemade! The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because the kids meals only comes with 1 side. The price is still good because the portions are generous, but it should definitely come with 2 sides. Other than that, I simply LOVE it. This place has been around for quite some time. Not sure why I didn't go more often, but I will be back more often now for sure!! read more

Neon Chicken has the homemade taste that everyone looks for in a restaurant. All of their side dishes are so delicious that I usually end up having to order extra- Their cranberry sauce and corn bread are mouth watering.
