The bartender, Lucy, repeatedly added money to the tip jar without asking, which left me feeling like my money was being taken without my consent. The food has also gone downhill, and the area around the bathrooms consistently smelled like urine. The biggest reason I won't return is the new security guard. Based on my own experience, he previously came into the bar when he didnt work there and frequently made young women uncomfortable by hitting on freshly 21-year-old customers and staring at people from the corner and makeing nasty comments . Now he's working security and using his phone while checking IDs, which did not make me feel comfortable. I know this man and im not letting him take photos of my id for his stash. The atmosphere has completely changed. What used to feel like a neighborhood bar now feels like an over-policed club. Security constantly follows customers around, making it impossible to relax and enjoy yourself. On top of that, the security guard regularly smokes in the entrance, blowing cigarette smoke toward customers as they walk in. It's unprofessional and creates a terrible first impression. From what I personally observed, many of the other employees seemed frustrated with the behavior of these two staff members as well. After more than a decade of being a loyal customer, I'm extremely disappointed in what this place has become. I can't recommend it to anyone. There are plenty of better bars that treat their customers with respect.

we will be dreaming about this place for the rest of forever and that is not an exaggeration…read more ok so the backstory: we did NOT plan to stay here. my partner got a bad migraine on our drive home to Seattle and we suddenly needed a dog-friendly place to stay, immediately, on short notice. we found captain whidbey in a bit of a desperate scramble and oh my god it literally changed our lives. we stayed in one of the cabins and it was PERFECTION. like every single detail: the local treats they leave out, the robes, the fireplace, the cozy bed with a view of the actual ocean. i just laid there in disbelief (with a big ol smile) that this was real life. stunning doesn't even cover it. and THEN. the restaurant. oh my GODDDDDD. the cherry on top of the most perfect accidental stay. the food was creative and beautifully executed and the service was just incredible: so warm and personal. they were SO accommodating to my many dietary restrictions without a single moment of awkwardness, which honestly made me want to cry a little (in a grateful way). also!!! BREAKFAST DELIVERED TO YOUR CABIN IN THE MORNING!!! they just bring it right to your door and you eat it in your robe by the fire and look at the ocean and you think "yes. this is it. Booking was a breeze, advanced communication was timely and informative, check-in was friendly and easy, and even the drive across the island from Friday Harbor was engaged and informative. But the real magic happened on the water, where we started under mild, overcast skies, and ended with sunshine and perfect weather. Along the way we saw: 1 black fox, 2 harbor seals, 1 harbor porpoise, a rhinoceros auklet (unique diving sea bird), 13+ Bald Eagles, AND TWO HUMPBACK WHALES! The beach side lunch was fantastic... the best turkey sandwich I've ever had, made exceptional by the views and the company. The lack of an Orca sighting made this full day trip an eyelash shy of perfect, but we could not have otherwise been more thrilled with our experience on the water with Brandon and the Discovery Sea Kayak team. Thank you for a magical day on the island. PS - we paid half as much for a full day tour with Discovery as we did for a half day tour on Orcas Island, so this group gets our strongest recommendation!

And the food was excellent, thoughtfully prepared and sensitive to peoples food allergies. It was an amazing experience and I highly recommend. Also of note is that the equipment was good quality and well maintained, with the kayaks being stable and relatively easy to steer with an added rudder.
