During this 16 minutes, someone picked up the phone several times but then placed call back on hold (to make it appear they'd picked up I assume?) At no time during this 16 minute call did anyone ever answer the phone or ask me to hold. Unacceptable way to do business. Especially if your business is healthcare.

She scheduled me for a follow up injection 5 weeks out, and the office was supposed to send in the paperwork to my insurance to get authorization. The office did not send my insurance the proper information, and on Oct 2, 2025, my insurance sent them a response saying they didn't send complete information. My procedure was scheduled on Oct 20 at 1015am. At 945am, the office called and said they canceled my procedure because they were having trouble getting authorization from my insurance. I called the office to complain about their last minute cancelation (my driver had used leave in order to drive me home, as required) and to ask if I could make a follow up appointment in the meantime to go over my pain management options, and also to make sure the office purple were actually sending in the information my insurance requested. When I called I was admittedly on the verge of tears, and the woman who answered not only lacked any sympathy or empathy, but she threatened to hang up on me, and I asked her to let me speak to a manager instead. I was blunt, trying to hold back tears, but I did not insult her, nor did I use any foul language. The office workers not only filled out my insurance authorization requests incorrectly, but they let it sit in the office for 18 days, and canceled 30 minutes before my procedure, giving me no follow up and no further information. Then, when confronted about it, they shut down and hang up. This is unacceptable under any standards for patient care, and I really hope the phone call was recorded so the manager can hear it. An emotionally distraught patient who is frustrated and looking for help or answers should be well within the parameters of care for a receptionist handling the claim of that patient. I have no way to contact my doctor as she forwarded me to the office manager who is not in office. Communication is abysmal, and they need more training on how to file for authorizations, and then respond to the patient in a timely manner.

However, I had my first knee replacement with Dr. Raterman in 2020, on my left knee. I had no issues, so when he told me back then, that my right knee which rarely bothered me, was worst than my left which was the one in excruciating pain, I decide to go with the one I had most pain with. Then in 2023, I chose him again, and suffer through his personality, thinking the results would be similar to my first surgery since it was same doctor. But this surgery he did it with the assistant of a robot. To improve my recovery I went just like in the first surgery to a rehab center, spent two weeks doing physical therapy and then did outpatient physical therapy as well. I kept complaining to physical therapy, and to doctor Raterman, and his very caring nurse practitioner Dr. Wicker, that something felt different and not in a good way. I was in pain, I couldn't sleep if I laid on my right side. I finished physical therapy and it's documented of my complaint. I went home and continued my exercises for months, but the pain just wouldn't go away. Because of Raterman's attitude I started seen is nurse practitioner which sent me 2 or 3 different times to get MRIs done, the mechanical equipment would come out fine. It showed swelling even a year and half later, even two years later. They gave me different medications and nothing helped. I started loosing strength in my knee, I couldn't even lead with that leg to go up a small flight of stairs. If I was getting off the side walk I had to make sure I did it in a way I didn't bend that knee because I would be in tears. I started developing like lumps under my skin, like cyst. So, I decided in April of 2025 to put up with Raterman again and go talk to him, since he did the surgery. Like always is demeanor is so bad. When I started to inform him of what I was feeling, immediately, he cut me off, and said to me and I qoute" So I guess you think I have some miracle WD-40 to spray it and fix your knee" he said this with a straight face. I told him it was not that; but it makes no sense, two years later I am worse than I was before surgery. I've complained for two years in horrible pain. His answer was, unless you think it's that bad that it's worth me going in and destroying all that I did. He took it personally, it was about what he did and not about my pain. Like I said before the MRIs, shows swelling all the time. The mechanical part is fine, but something got hurt in there and I am paying the price. Raterman just gave me a referral for physical therapy again. He said there is nothing he can do, in a way so cold and uncaring. It shows he doesn't care, and I am still in pain and looking for a second opinion. I have called my insurance and informed them as well, they will be investigating. I know something is wrong, I feel it everyday. If you need a surgery, please don't go here, safe yourself the grief. Raterman, only cares about his ego. Good luck.

The practice made multiple mistakes from scheduling surgery to writing a correct prescription for pain killers. It took 12 calls over 3 weeks to get enough pain killers to deal with the nerve damage. Wait times were often over an hour to see Dr. Raterman. He never once called to express any concern for the damage he caused. The practice is working over capacity and Dr Raterman has too much ego to take responsibility. I can't run (or do lots of things) anymore, but you should run if you're thinking if going here!

He takes his time to examine his patients which is a very good thing now days instead of being rushed in and rushed out like some of the other doctors will do in the area. My family has been a patient of Dr. Mena's for the past 2 years almost 3 years we have enjoyed him as our primary care doctor! He has doctor privileges at Memorial hospital, St. Joesph Hospital & Tampa General right in the area of his doctor office and Memorial Hospital is right across the street for easy access. His office staff is always friendly his nurses are always friendly and they will do the normal check the weight, temperature and fever to make sure your not coming down with a cold, flu or anything bad like. They'll take you to a private room where they'll ask you what brings you in to the doctor's office and then you'll wait for the doctor to come in and he'll exam you in the area your having a problem at. Trust me if you or someone else is needed a great doctor in the Tampa or the surrounding areas check out Dr. Mena he's awesome.

That's just one example. Not only our family but other patients of dr mena have had stories of when they were sick and needed to see a doctor and called dr mena he declined to see them and us. We have asked repeatedly for him to call us-nothing. We have sent emails to his email. Nothing. Not worth the extra money. We are going to find a better doctor- and that is a low bar.

The office could use a little work, like holes in the floor in the waiting room. I'm afraid one day someone will trip on one of them. I've had two doctor appointments here and both times it was a different doctor. I'm not crazy about that. I prefer having the same doctor every time they are both very nice. I have no complaints there, but wasn't crazy about treatment options They gave me. I refuse them. Physical therapy has been great. All three therapists are wonderful, very friendly and easy to work with. Yes I walk away very sore after a session but no pain no gain right? I have no experience with going to pain management business, so my opinions are as they would be if I had something to compare it to. Overall, I would say it's an OK place to go, and I would have no problem recommending someone to go here.
