Poor Communication and Unprofessional Treatment - 2/5 Stars I'm disappointed to share this experience, as I was hoping to find a reliable salon after relocating to the area. I chose this Aveda salon based on positive experiences with the brand elsewhere, but unfortunately encountered significant service and professionalism issues. My first red flag should have been when Nicole accepted my color appointment but then informed me upon arrival that she needed to reschedule the actual color service for another day. While the consultation went well and I agreed to return, this set an unprofessional tone. The color work itself was acceptable, but the styling was terrible - I left looking like a poodle. Despite my hesitation about the cut, I decided to give the salon another chance since I was satisfied with the color results. Nicole recommended a 6-week follow-up, which seemed excessive given that I typically only need color services 2-3 times per year. When I called a week before the scheduled appointment (5 weeks later) to cancel because my color was still vibrant, I spoke with the receptionist and left my contact information to reschedule when needed. When I did call back to book an appointment, I had to cancel due to a death in the family. Again, I called well in advance, explained the situation to the receptionist, and requested to reschedule. A week ago, I called to finally reschedule, only to have Nicole call me back days later claiming I was being "fired" as a client for having "3 no-shows." I was shocked, as I had made two advance-notice cancellations with valid reasons - never any no-shows. When I politely explained that I had called ahead both times and spoken with staff, she became defensive and essentially called me a liar. What bothers me most is the unprofessional communication. At no point was I informed of any cancellation policy, and treating advance-notice cancellations (one for practical reasons, one for a family emergency) as "no-shows" is simply inaccurate. The defensive attitude and accusatory tone made an already frustrating situation much worse. I understand salons need policies, but basic courtesy and honest communication should be standard. I was respectful of their time and always provided advance notice, yet was treated as if I had done something wrong. This felt personal rather than professional. I cannot recommend this salon based on the poor styling work and unprofessional client relations. read more

This little salon and spa in Frederick is adorable! The location is just outside of adorable downtown Frederick, so, it makes it easy to find parking on the street. The stylists and salon staff here are in high demand, so when you call, don't expect to get an appointment right away! If you like the place, it's suggested you make an appointment for the future cut and style you'll need before you leave! I love that they use Aveda products- just lovely! Some of the staff here have Dyson hair dryers- super super nice! Everyone is patient and has an eye for detail, from greeting you professionally and warmly to the cut and style that you seek. They're always asking your opinion and never imposing their own will- this is sometimes an issue with nice salons where they think they know what you need for your hair. Thank goodness they don't do that! There's no judgment for whatever you request. From the products to the services to the exact style, it's entirely up to you. Love this place! From the scheduling to the actual appointment, everything was wonderful. I sent a request for an appointment and they responded quickly with options. I was greeted immediately upon arriving even though they were busy. My facial was fabulous - I even schedule my next one. These four ladies did an amazing job attending my bridal party and I for my wedding. They were patient and totally heard each of us out to make sure our hair and make up came out to be exactly as we had envisioned. Amanda did my hair and it was beautiful, I LOVED it. I went here and saw Paige. She completely ruined my hair. The owner is awesome though and fixed it for free, which is why I'm giving it 2 stars. If you want specifics you can read my rant below but that's the gist of it. I really had high hopes for this salon based on reviews. I'm a blonde - asked for ashy blonde low light with highlights.. same thing I've been getting in both NoVA and Chicago for the past 10 years. I specified no warm tones, only cool blonde shades. Well, needless to say I am home with brassy/orange roots and the rest is damaged blonde quite a bit shorter than I wanted. I asked for low lights too but I don't see those anywhere. I called and left a message to have it fixed so will follow up with notes how that goes. How did I make it home like this? 3+ hours in the chair silent (my stylist Paige NOT a good talker or listener), dark outside and dim lights inside. ..after another 3.5 hours in the salon I'm sad to say that it's not fixed. Of course the only person available to do my hair was the same one who ruined it.. so I guess I really shouldn't have expected much. It's a little better though, and that's because the owner came over and told my colorist exactly what she should do, but I didn't process long enough and to make matters worse the hair around my face was missed, so I still have copper roots around my face, next to my dark blonde/light brown eyebrows. The worst part is that since I've had two color procedures back to back my hair has thinned to nothing on top of the shorter-than-I-had-wanted cut. Yes, I cried at the salon today. And again this evening when I realized I still had dye in the back of my hair - she didn't even wash it properly. Never did I think that would happen to me. I will be going back because the owner has offered to fix it herself which I really appreciate (especially after seeing how good she is!). She gave me a free damage treatment and compensated my dissatisfaction - overall very professional, sweet and sincere. Sadly, I can't do anything but spend the next six weeks with ginger hair around my face and blasted damaged blonde on the top. I really hope the time flies and that next time I'll leave loving my hair like all the other ladies. read more

Been going to this salon since they opened. Always have a great experience. My hair comes out looking great -- I get lowlights and highlights in attempt to keep it natural looking. My stylist, Adeline, always listens to my concerns and desires and does her best to give me the results I'm looking for. It's a bit pricey, but I've found it to be well worth it. You get what you pay for when it comes to beauty treatments. Also have great deals on facials and massages. I love the clean fresh scents of the Aveda products. read more

I had grown my hair out for over a year. I needed to clean up my sides so I tried this salon. I told the girl not to touch the sides and top. Before I could say stop she took a razor around my head. Not only did she completely ignore what I said it was the worst hair cut I have ever received. I ended up going to DC to my trusted hair salon to get it fixed. They had too pretty much take all my hair off to fix what was done. I shared my photographs with people of the hair cut and they could not beleive it. read more

I am a picky customer. I recommend Adeline Banawoye. My "Hallelujah!" moment: She is one of very few hair dressers able to treat my hair without the much dreaded (for me, lovely on others) orange or red tones. I saw some earlier reviews and want to add that I made 2 appointments, and neither had a significant wait; in fact, one was nearly immediate. I found scheduling easy. At the salon, I was greeted upon arrival and again - no significant wait (if any). Once in the chair, I was delivered delicious french press coffee. By request, my color was changed quite a bit. The process I chose can be damaging, but there has been no breakage, nor split ends. It has been nearly three months. Both cut and color are growing out well - the front especially so. Make an appointment with Adeline if you are looking for a detail oriented, conscientious - and accommodating hair dresser. read more

Not worth the price AT ALL. The stylist I saw, while very sweet was not at all personable. I got ombre highlights and ended up with little to no transition from dark brown to light blonde complete with an awful skunk streak in the front. It wasn't at all like the photos I showed her. To top it off my ends were completely bleached out and fried. Definitely NOT worth the nearly 250 dollars for a cut and color. I won't be back. read more

So, this is a bitter sweet review - I have been a weekly customer for a little over two years, and I was beyond happy with the level of work my stylist, Adeline (who is also the owner), provided. I can not express what a great hair stylist (and person in general!) she is. They do not double book, so you can expect to arrive for your appointment and be seen quickly and attentively. I honestly never had a bad hair day while Adeline was doing my hair. The salon is clean and they go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable and refreshed if there is a wait. So the cons: While they provide great service while you are in the salon, at times it is difficult to get an appointment, especially if you are not scheduling several weeks in advance. This is somewhat understandable. However, more than several times I have called to try to make or change an appointment and been told that they would call me back to let me know if there was an availability, and I never received a call back. Not even just to let me know that nothing was available. So if you want to make an appointment, and this type of non-service does not bother you, your best bet is to make sure you schedule weeks in advance, or maybe visit the store in person; otherwise, you may be waiting for a call that will never happen. Bottom line: As far as the service goes, I would definitely recommend the salon/Adeline. read more

This is seriously the BEST hair salon!!! The actual salon is chic, modern, & relaxing, as it's an Aveda salon. The staff is great--really friendly but never pressuring you to buy products. I was never loyal to a salon in the past, but I've been going to Adeline (the owner)for years now, since she first opened the salon actually. Since then I have had numerous random people come up to me and ask where I get my hair done. She just knows hair & how to do it WELL! I hardly have to tell her what I want & she gets it perfect every time. Plus, its like getting your hair done with a free therapy session in one bc we chat all about life :). The place is a dark hole one of the last bad blocks of downtown Frederick. No parking, suspicious characters around all corners, don't leave the salon after dark! As for the salon, it's average and overpriced. There are a few other aveda salons in town, so that's no draw either. read more

I used to be a customer of Strand, and I loved my stylist there. I was relieved to find out that she had only moved just down the street to the new location (Neutre, Inc.). She really listens to what I ask her to do, and also gives me great advice, if I'm not sure. She really has given me some of the best haircuts/styles that I've ever had. She just colored my hair, and I love it. She did a great job getting me exactly what I wanted. My family and friends have often commented on how good my hair looks. Like April Z, I saw Paige on 12/11/12 and she completely ruined my hair. I wish I had researched the salon further, and would have been able to save myself. Im wondering if Chelsea B's review is about Paige as well bc she was not personable AT ALL. Adeline, the owner, refunded me completely after I visited the salon two days later to show the owner t happened, but after 2 ER visits and four days out of work, it was a drop in the bucket. I also advised the receptionist upon booking, and Paige during consultation, that I'm allergic to PPD, which is a chemical in the dye. She acted like she understood and knew what to do. ..I dye my roots at least four times a year at Aveda Salons and there is a way to neutralize the dye. I have not had a reaction in 5 years. I went in with waist long, very thick, naturally almost black hair. When I scheduled, I told the receptionist about the thickness of my hair, my style, my cut, and requested a "master stylist, or cut expert" as I do every time I go to an Aveda salon other than my home salon. ( my job requires an extreme amount of travel and I'm away more often than home) I wanted very subtle caramel ombré, cut in the Sahag technique. The blame is partially mine because as we talked about what I wanted I found myself interviewing the stylist more about what I wanted than she was interested in understanding what I wanted. Even though I showed her a picture of the exact ombré, she was very cavalier, almost laughing me off saying, "I know how to do ombré" In the beginning of the application of color to my new growth, I tried to make small talk and asked how long she had been doing hair. She said 4 yrs, but my awful experience does not reflect that. As she was backcombing my hair for her ombré technique, I had to tell her several times she was hurting me. She couldn't have seemed to care less. I was on edge from that point on. After my color was complete almost three hours later, she seemed completely bored with proceeding with my cut. My cut is extremely detailed, but she was doing a Fantastic Sam's cut, cutting into huge sections of my hair with absolutely no interest in where she was cutting. I specified during consultation, that it needs to be shaped and thinned, but NO STRAGGLY ENDS. She proceeded to cut only from the bottom 1/3 of my hair, at which point (about 10 mins) I stopped her. Too late. The front left of my hair was already badly hacked. I pointed out to her how bad it looked, and her solution was to "take some out" of the other side to make it match. When your only solution is to roll your eyes and botch the other side to "make it match" there is a problem. Of course, I didn't agree to this and advised I was ready to go. My services totaled $200 and I tipped 20% plus an extra $5 bc she washed my hair herself. At this point, knowing I should have researched the salon further, I was trying to convince myself my cut wasn't that bad, And I have just psyched myself out.. My husband picked me up from the salon for dinner, and halfway through our 1st cocktail, my head was itching so badly I could barely concentrate. I went to work the next day and felt awful. The next morning I woke up with my scalp oozing, and extremely swollen glands. I knew I was having an allergic reaction and called into work. I slept until the salon opened and called the owner to complain. Adeline was very understanding and asked if I could come in to see if she could fix it. I advised I would come in that afternoon after I felt better, but did nothing could be done to fix this. After I got out of bed and saw myself, I knew I had to go in immediately because my afternoon would be spent in the ER. And it was, as was the next day. 3 prescriptions and a shot, and four hundred dollars later, I was still suffering. A month later I am still dealing with a flakey healing scalp, a horrible cut, and less than subtle ombré. I can honestly say I've never been more disappointed with any hair service I've ever had in my entire life. Ever. She pulled and torecat my hair the whole time. I even asked her at one point if I could comb it myself because I NEVER tear at my hair that way. Long hair is a commitment and I take great care of my hair If she has 4 yrs experience and can manage to ruin peoples hair this badly she's in bad need of extreme training, or a new career. In short Adeline should fire her in order to save her business. When you go to a restaurant and advise you're allergic to nuts, they don't pick the pine nuts out of your pesto and serve it to you. Allergies are serious. When I advised her I was allergic, after 4 yrs in the industry she should know if she reads any trade magazines at all that allergies can hospitalize people, and if she doesn't know how to correctly deal with it, be upfront and tell the client "my apologies but I'm nor equipped, and don't feel comfortable enough to to deal with your allergy". I would have been much happier and impressed with true professionalism. read more

Nicole cut my hair last weekend and I could not be happier. She gave me a cut that looks great whether I leave my hair naturally curly or straighten it (believe it or not this is hard sometimes). She listened to my explanation of what I wanted and spent a great deal of time working on my hair. The appointments were not booked too close together so I didn't feel like she rushed at all. She was friendly but didn't talk non-stop (something I really appreciate). I was offered coffee which came as a French press and with real cream. I was very happy! read more

I recently went into this salon with my husband around 12/23/2010. And, upon check out was appalled at the level of costumer service I recieved. The young lady at the counter started flirting with my husband and making goo-goo eyes at him and then when it was time for her to look at me she could barely look me in the eyes. And, let's not leave out that you could hardly miss our wedding rings. I will never in my life go back to Aveda. I have been a supporter for 22 years.
